Chapter 7: Changing the Dressing, “Handling” Him All Over
Gu Yan froze for a moment. “Educated Youth?”
He simply could not connect those two words with her and Gu Rou.
“It’s a long story…” Mother Gu sighed. “When the news of the relocation reached home, Ning-ning insisted on divorcing you. At the time, we thought the child just didn’t want to suffer with us…” Mother Gu poured out everything like beans from a jar, finally adding her own perspective.
“Ning-ning… I truly didn’t misjudge her back then. She is someone who values love and loyalty. I feel terrible that I didn’t understand her enough; I even resented her when she mentioned the divorce!”
Father Gu nodded incessantly as he listened to Mother Gu. “Yes! This child is good, and she’s clever and calm enough. To be able to make such quick decisions in the face of disaster—that level of composure is far stronger than most men.”
Saying this, he looked at Gu Yan: “Even though you two are divorced, it’s just a temporary measure. We only recognize Lin Ning as our daughter-in-law. Don’t you think of taking this chance to brush her off.”
Mother Gu followed suit with an earnest, painstaking tone: “That’s right, Xiao Yan. Although we were the ones who forced you into the marriage originally, think about it—if she didn’t love you to death, would she have gone this far for you? You can’t be foolish; you can’t fail her. Otherwise, otherwise…”
Mother Gu thought for a long time and finally came up with: “…don’t blame me, your mother, for disowning you as my son!”
The sheer volume of information from his parents was so large that Gu Yan couldn’t react for a moment. When he finally did, his first thought was:
Hearing Lin Ning’s voice when I was delirious… was it actually real?
And the other thought: Lin Ning loves him that much?
Just thinking about it—perhaps because the high fever hadn’t fully broken—his face felt a bit hot!
“By the way, she was here just now, but sadly you were unconscious. She gave your wounds a basic treatment, fed you some white porridge, and left some medicine. Ning-ning said she’ll bring some wooden boards tomorrow to fix your leg and arm. When she comes, you’d better have a better attitude toward her, you hear me!”
Mother Gu felt that since her daughter-in-law had done so much for him, she had to let her son know. She had to make him remember her kindness!
Only now did Gu Yan notice that the wounds on his body had indeed been basicly treated. His stomach, which had been empty for two or three days, felt slightly full. Thinking that these were all things Lin Ning had done for him and that she would be coming back tomorrow… he was lost in thought for a moment.
Seeing her son’s silence, Mother Gu thought he was still unwilling to pay attention as before, and she couldn’t help but get anxious!
“Did you hear me talking to you! When Ning-ning comes tomorrow, you are not allowed to show her that ‘dead person’ face again!”
Gu Yan lowered his eyes slightly. “Mm.”
Seeing this, Mother Gu seemed a bit more at ease. She turned to discuss with Father Gu how they would sleep that night. There was no bed in the cowshed, only a pile of straw in the corner where Gu Yan was lying. Father and Mother Gu huddled in another corner; since the nights weren’t exceptionally cold yet, they would make do for tonight. Tomorrow, they would find more straw, ideally to line the four walls of the cowshed so it wouldn’t be so drafty and they’d have some privacy.
On the other side, although Lin Ning and Gu Rou had tidied up the rooms, Gu Rou was afraid to sleep alone and insisted on sleeping with Lin Ning. The first night of their relocation to Da Liu Village passed relatively peacefully.
The next morning, Lin Ning woke up very early. She simmered a pot of white porridge, boiled a few eggs, and made a stack of batter pancakes. Taking advantage of the pre-dawn light, she sent them to the cowshed.
Father and Mother Gu were late sleepers; they didn’t even wake up when she entered. Gu Yan, however, opened his eyes immediately. By the dim twilight, he saw Lin Ning’s face clearly.
Lin Ning hadn’t expected Gu Yan to be awake and instinctively made a “hush” gesture. Gu Yan’s half-opened mouth snapped shut.
Lin Ning approached him, showing him the porridge, eggs, and pancakes one by one before tucking them under the straw near his hand. Then, she reached out to touch his forehead; after one night, the high fever had broken. She checked the other wounds on his body; they didn’t look as severe as yesterday.
Lin Ning was quite satisfied. Though he was heavily injured, his physical constitution was truly excellent! It saved her a lot of worry.
Gu Yan watched her quietly as she checked his wounds, changed the dressings, and “handled” him all over his body! When she finished, she stared at him and made a series of gestures with her hands.
It was a bit of a mess. But he seemed to understand?
She said: She had to leave first and would come back tonight. She said: Don’t save the food she sent; eat it all. She will bring more when she comes. She said: She will take good care of his sister; don’t worry. She said: Rest well, goodbye!
Then she waved and left! He hadn’t managed to say a single word to her.
When full daylight arrived, the village became noisy and lively. Father and Mother Gu woke up, their first glance going to their son. Seeing them awake, Gu Yan moved a finger: “Lin Ning was here. She brought food.”
Father and Mother Gu looked down at his hand; the bulging straw made it obvious something was hidden. Mother Gu leaned over and pulled back the straw to see the eggs, pancakes, and two water canteens. Unscrewing the caps, one was plain water, the other white porridge.
“When did that child come?” Mother Gu muttered, then looked up with a hint of complaint: “And you, you didn’t even wake me and your father up.”
As she spoke, she peeled an egg and put it in Gu Yan’s mouth. “This child is so meticulous—the eggs are already peeled. We don’t have to deal with the shells.” She stuffed one into her own mouth and another into Father Gu’s hand. “Eat quickly, don’t let anyone find out.”
The family of three ate breakfast hurriedly. Father Gu took a moment to look at Gu Yan: “Your fever broke?”
Gu Yan gave an “Mm.” He paused, then continued: “Lin Ning changed my dressings when she came, too.”
Father Gu nodded in relief. Mother Gu looked over uneasily, “You didn’t give Ning-ning an attitude, did you?”
As soon as she said this, even Father Gu became worried!
Gu Yan was silent for a moment: “No!”
Lin Ning was now their family’s great benefactor; did he even dare to give her an attitude?
Father and Mother Gu breathed a sigh of relief. As long as he didn’t, there was still hope for their son!
“Then did Ning-ning say she’s coming back today?” Mother Gu couldn’t quite describe how she felt—on one hand, she wanted her to come; on the other, she didn’t want her to be caught having ties to the cowshed.
Gu Yan recalled her gestures. “She’ll come.”
Hearing this, Mother Gu only worried about whether she’d be discovered. “It’s better if Xiao Lin and the others come less often. The cowshed isn’t a good place; if they get caught, it’ll be bad for them.”
Father Gu was already quite content. Though their life in the cowshed was hard, they couldn’t ignore the safety of the two girls. Once Father Gu finished speaking, Mother Gu fell silent. It wasn’t that she didn’t understand the logic, it was just…
“True. When Ning-ning and the others come, tell them not to run to the cowshed if there’s nothing urgent. It’s not safe!”
…It was just that whenever she saw Ning-ning, she felt like she had someone to lean on.
Gu Yan paused. He felt in his heart that Lin Ning might not necessarily agree.
