The Venomous Wife Let Me Go - Chapter 38
Coming down from Linggu Temple and sitting back in Lin Song’s car, Bai Jun still felt as though the day’s experiences were a dream. She had actually succeeded! She had blended into the crowd without being identified by a single person.
She curled up in the back seat, her heart swelling with a dull ache and her body completely drained of strength. She felt on the verge of collapse. Her mind was empty, yet she felt a belated sense of realization; perhaps things weren’t as impossible as she had thought. But she was still afraid. The feeling was like walking a tightrope, constantly dreading the fall.
Before she knew it, the car came to a stop. Bai Jun had expected Lin Song to take her to a noisy, crowded restaurant to torment her again by making her too anxious to eat. However, to her surprise, Lin Song led her to a private restaurant with excellent reviews and high discretion.
They were given a private room. Looking at the secluded walls, Bai Jun’s prediction fell flat, leaving her with a sense of powerlessness, like punching cotton. She could never seem to guess what Lin Song was thinking. Her emotions fluctuated wildly; she had never felt so stimulated. As her feelings settled, all that remained was a hollow, vast exhaustion. Everything began to feel irrelevant, as if she could adapt to anything now.
“Are you satisfied with your revenge today?” she asked blankly. Lin Song had been stealing glances at her throughout the drive, seemingly observing her discomfort for pleasure. Now, looking at her, Lin Song’s eyes held a hint of a smile, clearly satisfied.
“How could I be satisfied?” Lin Song immediately suppressed the smile in her eyes and glared at her. “Everything went differently than I planned. I imagined you being recognized, crying and begging me for help, so I could reject and humiliate you, making you utterly miserable. You let my expectations down again!”
Bai Jun’s eyes widened. She hadn’t realized Lin Song had been harboring such terrifying thoughts. Just imagining that scenario made her tremble.
“What, are you scared now?” Lin Song seemed to be enjoying her role as the “bad woman.” Seeing the fear in Bai Jun’s eyes, her lips curled into a smile, and she couldn’t help but pinch Bai Jun’s cheek. “Then listen to me, and stop thinking about leaving my side.”
Hearing her own voice, Lin Song felt like a femme fatale enticing an innocent wife. But finally, Bai Jun’s beautiful eyes were no longer dead; they sparked with emotion. Lin Song swallowed hard, suppressing a shiver. Bai Jun’s attention and affection were her drug. Every time their eyes met, she desperately wanted to kiss her and make her lose her composure until those beautiful eyes could hold only her.
Sometimes, in the middle of the night, Lin Song wondered if this was all a dream. After all, she had spent years meticulously planning to get close to Bai Jun. Even their marriage was something she had plotted to obtain.
When did she realize her feelings? It was likely when her mother passed away. Upon hearing the news, Bai Jun had hurried back from abroad, quietly staying by her side to help handle everything. When she heard Bai Jun was about to leave again, Lin Song had feigned illness for the first time in her life, just to keep her there a few days longer.
Bai Jun stayed, just as she hoped. But then, Lin Song overheard a conversation between Bai Jun and Auntie Feng. Lin Song’s clumsy acting at the time couldn’t fool a veteran like Auntie Feng.
“Bai Jun, Lin Song is clearly faking it. You have piles of documents to handle abroad. You can’t be this childish; your grandfather is already very dissatisfied with you.”
“But Lin Song needs me.” Usually obedient to Auntie Feng, Bai Jun was incredibly stubborn this time. “Lin Song has always been well-behaved. She wouldn’t fake being sick unless she really needed me. Sorry, Auntie Feng, I want to stay with her. I’ll apologize to Grandfather later.”
Knowing she was faking but still treating her so gently, Lin Song couldn’t help it. That night, she held Bai Jun’s jacket, obsessed with her scent, and cried all night. The next day, she considerately packed Bai Jun’s luggage and urged her to leave, but she secretly kept the jacket. For many nights after, she slept clutching it.
She decided then that she would do anything for Bai Jun. Her cherished girl deserved the best in the world. But back then, she wasn’t qualified or capable of protecting her. She threw herself into making money and studying, wanting to become stronger.
Fortunately, she caught the wave of the era. The Song Corporation she founded accumulated massive wealth, and she gained influence in the entertainment industry. Initially, she didn’t dare hope for much, only wanting to protect Bai Jun as a “sister.” But Bai Jun was too good to her, constantly caring for her after her return to China, and Lin Song’s hidden desire grew deeper every day.
When she learned that the old Chairman Bai, due to his illness, wanted to arrange a marriage for Bai Jun, she could no longer restrain herself. She found a way to contact him. She couldn’t tolerate anyone else by Bai Jun’s side. She knew Bai Jun better than anyone: Bai Jun didn’t want a romance; she didn’t care who her partner was, as she was focused only on work. If that was the case, why couldn’t her partner be Lin Song?
She brought all her chips to the table. Whether moved by her persistence or for economic reasons, the old Chairman finally agreed. She knew Bai Jun wouldn’t accept her easily, so she collaborated with him to put on a show: a dying old man wanted his granddaughter’s happiness, so he secretly paid a fortune to terminate the contract of the girl his granddaughter “might like” and wanted them to marry.
As payment, she accepted the Chairman’s villa as collateral and injected funds into the dying Bai Group under the name of Song Corporation. Bai Jun’s reaction was unexpectedly intense; she apologized, saying her grandfather had misunderstood everything and that she only saw Lin Song as a sister, wishing to decline the engagement.
Fortunately, Lin Song had anticipated this. She continued to play the part of the “good sister,” “considerately” telling Bai Jun that she was tired of the entertainment industry and could use this as an excuse to retire. They could enter a sham marriage to put the grandfather at ease, and after he passed, they could divorce. Under her repeated persuasion, seeing her ailing grandfather, Bai Jun finally compromised.
Lin Song used every means to get the title of Bai Jun’s wife. Even if it was just a contract, she was satisfied; she finally had the right to stand by her side. After the marriage, both were busy, and their time together was short. But she was still happy, because she could finally care for Bai Jun openly rather than secretly.
She thought this distance was enough. She was one of Bai Jun’s closest people and could control her emotions. But the closer she got, the more she ached for Bai Jun. She knew Bai Jun’s mental health wasn’t great, but she didn’t realize it was so severe until she found her secret anti-depressants. Bai Jun seemed normal by day, but she often couldn’t sleep at all at night. Under high pressure, she even suffered from hallucinations and physical symptoms like tremors and pain.
Lin Song didn’t want to leave her; she wanted to stay with her forever. But because of the Bai Group and her illness, Bai Jun was like a sensitive hedgehog, pushing everyone away. She watched helplessly as Bai Jun’s condition worsened, those gentle, beautiful eyes losing their spark.
Six months later, the old Chairman passed away. Lin Song was prepared to never divorce; even if Bai Jun hated her, she would continue to occupy the position of her wife to stay close to her. She never expected the car accident. Nor did she expect Bai Jun to lose her memory.
The amnesiac Bai Jun regained her childhood liveliness; the light returned to her eyes. No one had the heart to tell her the painful past. Moreover, Bai Jun actually treated her as a wife! Heaven knows the joy she felt the first time Bai Jun kissed her and called her “Wife.” She had waited so long. She had resigned herself to fate, but Bai Jun’s closeness gave her endless hope. She indulged in this happiness, secretly wishing Bai Jun would never remember so she could remain her wife forever.
But Bai Jun was too good, too kind, and too many people desired her. She still wanted Bai Jun to remember so she would have the ability to protect herself. However, during the amnesia, she had to build a deeper bond so that when the memories returned, Bai Jun wouldn’t leave her again. Bai Jun was the one who had first acknowledged her as a wife. In front of her, Lin Song had no “dignity”; she was like a vicious dog. Once she got a taste of sweetness, she would bite down and never let go.
She asked doctors how to help restore memory. They suggested revisiting old places. But at that time, the Bai Group’s problems were severe. Afraid of hurting Bai Jun, she didn’t dare buy it outright, instead buying shares indirectly to become a major shareholder to support her later, which added a huge workload. Simultaneously, she had to assist the police in capturing Lin Feng.
She planned to take Bai Jun traveling to places from her past, but she simply couldn’t find the time. During this process, for some reason, Bai Jun began to suspect her, losing that bright look in her eyes and becoming distant. The period when Bai Jun asked for a divorce again was the most painful and hopeless time of Lin Song’s life. She thought Bai Jun had remembered. Bai Jun looked at her with guarded eyes; her pleas and acting no longer worked. Then, someone caught photos of Bai Jun and Song Yu on a date.
But how could she give up on Bai Jun? Bai Jun was more important than her own life. Driven by impulse, she bought a remote villa and tricked Bai Jun into going there. She struggled in the kitchen for a long time but ultimately didn’t put the drugs in the water. If she did that, how would she be any different from those who had hurt Bai Jun? She wanted to find another way to delay the divorce.
Then, she realized: Bai Jun hadn’t actually remembered. But in that moment, Lin Song almost wished she had. Bai Jun believed the edited footage from The Rebel, falling into self-loathing and depression, becoming lifeless again, even believing she had bullied Lin Song and separated her from a “White Moonlight.”
She knew Bai Jun wouldn’t listen to her now and wouldn’t believe that the White Moonlight in her diary was Bai Jun herself. But luckily, Bai Jun felt guilty. Lin Song was both heartbroken and afraid that Bai Jun would wither away. Desperate to restore her memory, she stayed by her side under the guise of “revenge,” never daring to leave for a moment.
In her despair, Bai Jun sold her shares of the Bai Group, allowing Lin Song to finally acquire the company directly. With her workload reduced, she finally had enough time to seek out Bai Jun’s memories. As for what would happen after she remembered, in some ways, she really was a “snake-hearted” woman. From the start of this journey, Lin Song had made her decision. She had already shown her true colors to Bai Jun and could no longer retreat to the position of a “good sister.” Others sought Bai Jun’s money, but she sought her heart. Regardless of whether Bai Jun remembered, she would never have another chance to escape.
Bai Jun couldn’t even taste the food in her mouth because Lin Song had started looking at her with that predatory, beast-like gaze again. She had realized that whenever she asked about her “atonement,” Lin Song became extremely strange. She even had the fleeting feeling that given Lin Song’s “hatred” for her, she might never be allowed to finish atoning.
A chill ran down her spine. She wanted an excuse to leave the room but felt it would lack the sincerity of atonement, so she just buried her head and kept eating. Luckily, that gaze was fleeting. Lin Song sighed and took a few slow bites.
“I haven’t had much of an appetite today, but seeing you eat so happily seems to have given me some.”
Bai Jun looked up to see Lin Song eating slowly. Bai Jun was halfway through her bowl, while Lin Song had barely touched hers. In truth, Lin Song had lost a lot of weight lately. Bai Jun glanced at her and pursed her lips. She was actually full, but hearing Lin Song and remembering she liked watching her eat, she forced herself to take a few more bites.
Lin Song was very proper while eating, only taking from the two dishes in front of her. But those two dishes happened to be quite spicy, which wasn’t to her taste. Even though she knew she shouldn’t be playing favorites now, Bai Jun couldn’t help but move two milder dishes in front of Lin Song, covering it up by pulling the spicy ones toward herself.
“I prefer spicy food,” she explained guiltily. Lin Song seemed to curl her lips into a smile. By the time Bai Jun finished nearly all her food, Lin Song put down her chopsticks, having only finished half a bowl.
Bai Jun wanted to urge her to eat more, but Lin Song had already picked up her makeup bag to touch up. She touched up Bai Jun’s makeup too, then led her out. Bai Jun had expected to go to Lakeside Park, but instead, Lin Song drove her to the cinema.
“It’s too hot at noon. Let’s watch a movie before we go.”
Lin Song bought tickets for the nearest showing and two large cups of milk tea. Bai Jun didn’t know what movie it was, but the dark atmosphere made her feel safe. The large cups of milk tea could hide her face, making her feel more secure than in the crowded temple.
However, as the movie played, Bai Jun realized something was wrong. Screams erupted from the audience periodically. It was a horror movie. Perhaps Lin Song wanted to scare her as revenge. Should she pretend to be afraid? But she hadn’t been afraid of such things since she was a child; she had always been honest and had never done anything to be ashamed of.
But seeing someone fall from a building on screen, she couldn’t help but close her eyes. That feeling of despair and sadness seemed to bubble up from her heart again. But before she could fully feel it, her shoulder suddenly grew heavy. Lin Song was clutching her arm tightly, her head resting on her shoulder, her breath brushing against her ear.
“Let me lean on you,” Lin Song’s voice sounded extremely reluctant, but her grip on Bai Jun’s arm was very tight, her breath hot.
Bai Jun blinked, realizing belatedly: was Lin Song afraid?
