The Venomous Wife Let Me Go - Chapter 34
Lin Song’s request wasn’t excessive. Since it was Bai Jun who had used power and coercion to marry her, it was only natural to apologize to her “White Moonlight.”
Bai Jun felt a sense of daze, yet it was accompanied by a feeling of peace that things were finally as they should be. Lin Song should be with her first love, living a happy life, rather than wasting her years with a “bad woman” like herself. A woman like her only deserved to grow old alone.
It’s enough just to cherish the present, she thought.
Bai Jun carefully set down the flowers in her hand. Her happiness was just like this brilliant bouquet: the moment it was plucked from the branch, its decay was already foretold.
“I need to ask the group for a leave of absence. I’m not sure if they’ll approve it.” Bai Jun blinked, meeting Lin Song’s gaze with a forced smile. “But don’t worry, I’ll find a way to accompany you to find her.”
“What should I do when I face your White Moonlight?” she asked patiently. “Should I prepare a confession in advance? Do I need to break down in tears? I’m afraid I might not be able to cry on cue… maybe you could slap me then? Be decisive. If your White Moonlight sees that, she’ll truly believe you hate me. I won’t blame you.”
She was wholeheartedly planning for Lin Song’s future, but Lin Song’s expression grew increasingly dark.
“Is this how you see me now?” Lin Song took several deep breaths, laughing out of sheer frustration. “A ‘bad woman’ who hates you to the bone and would even hit you? Bai Jun, you really are something!”
Bai Jun’s eyes widened. She hadn’t expected Lin Song to interpret it that way. She flusteredly tried to apologize, she didn’t mean it like that. Lin Song had been more than kind to her “enemy” lately; she just wanted to help Lin Song out.
But Lin Song didn’t seem to want to hear her apology. She interrupted Bai Jun and handed her the Instax photo and the USB drive from yesterday.
“I’m afraid the photos might get lost if the computer crashes. Help me back them up to your phone.”
Bai Jun wanted to say there was cloud storage and they wouldn’t be lost, but she had just offended Lin Song. Besides, the journey would be long; it would be good to have something to do on the road. More importantly, it gave her a legitimate reason to save the photos of her and Lin Song.
Bai Jun looked at the Instax photo in her hand. In the picture, she had been caught off guard, her expression a bit dazed. Perhaps because she had been thinking of her White Moonlight at the time, Lin Song’s gaze toward her held a very obvious smile. The two of them looked… unexpectedly well-matched.
Before she knew the truth, she had been repulsed by cameras. She also thought she and Lin Song had a long lifetime ahead of them, so she had never thought about taking photos together. Only now did Bai Jun feel a pang of regret.
Photos provide instantaneous joy; they record every mark left by a life passing through time. Life is unpredictable; accidents can happen at any moment. She wanted to leave as many mementos as possible, so that in the long years of atonement that followed, she might still have some self-deceptive comfort.
Even though she knew she looked like a mouse stealing happiness, she couldn’t control herself. She wanted to hoard more. With this in mind, she stopped demurring. Guilty and unable to look Lin Song in the eye, she took the items from her.
Lin Song started the car.
Bai Jun pulled out her phone, intending to call the company to discuss the two-month leave. Only then did she realize she had only been in contact with Xu Tu and didn’t have the contact information for the other company yet.
“I want to ask for two months of leave. Will Song’s Film and Television agree?” Bai Jun called Xu Tu, feeling slightly apprehensive. She felt like she couldn’t do anything right—asking for such a long leave just after starting work.
“I just received a call and was about to tell you—” Xu Tu answered almost immediately. “Song’s Film and Television said they just took over the Bai Group and want to make large-scale adjustments to the corporate structure. They’re afraid it might be awkward for you, and it’s unclear which department you’ll be in. So, they plan to give you three months of paid leave first.”
Bai Jun breathed a sigh of relief. She hadn’t expected things to be so coincidental. “Who should I coordinate with in the future?”
Song’s Film and Television was truly being very kind to her; Bai Jun felt immensely grateful.
“I asked that question, but they said your affairs have always been handled by their chairman personally. They aren’t sure themselves. The chairman will contact you when the time comes.”
The chairman of Song’s Film and Television was notoriously elusive. Hearing this, Bai Jun immediately dropped the idea of reaching out first.
“What about your plans?” Bai Jun asked about Xu Tu’s arrangements. “I’m sorry, I’ve been so busy with my own affairs lately that I haven’t looked after you. I can’t afford to employ you like this anymore.”
Bai Jun decided to be open: “Everyone recognizes your abilities. Although I can’t remember right now, I should have some connections from over the years. Is there anywhere you want to go? I can introduce you.”
“No!” Xu Tu refused almost instantly. “I’ve earned enough money to spend. President Bai, if it weren’t for your sponsorship, I wouldn’t be where I am today. Right now, I only want to stay by your side. Besides, Song’s Film and Television also sent me an invitation with similar pay, hoping I’ll continue working within the group.”
Bai Jun had always had complex feelings toward her secretary, Xu Tu. On one hand, she respected her work ability; on the other, she felt Xu Tu was someone Lin Song had bought off, so she didn’t dare trust her too much. She hadn’t expected Xu Tu to say this. Had Lin Song not told her yet that she had discovered their scheme?
“President Bai,” Xu Tu continued, her voice sounding a bit hesitant. “I know you must be in a bad mood these days. If you’re willing, I’d like to take a few days off to take you out for a walk to clear your head.”
“Thank you for the kind offer.” Bai Jun truly couldn’t see through Xu Tu’s intentions anymore. Xu Tu seemed to genuinely care about her. But she didn’t want to overthink anything right now, so she told Xu Tu her plan: “I’m with Lin Song right now. We have some private matters to handle for about a month or two. Let’s talk once I’ve dealt with them.”
“Alright,” Xu Tu said after a pause. “I’m very sorry for hiding some things from you before.” She seemed to take a deep breath on the other end. “I’ve wanted to apologize to you for a long time. You might not trust me much right now, but whatever happens, whenever you need me, President Bai, I’ll be here.”
Bai Jun gave an “mm,” not knowing what to say. Her heart was in a state of turmoil. After a long while, she lowered her head and hung up. Perhaps human nature is inherently complex. Xu Tu might have looked down on her for coercing Lin Song, leading her to help Lin Song, but having been her secretary for so long, she must have developed some feelings for her.
But what was there about a “bad woman” like her that was worth following?
“Don’t you usually trust Xu Tu? Why do you look like this?” Lin Song seemed worried she was up to no good, as she had been listening intently to the call.
“Isn’t Xu Tu your ally?” Bai Jun had no heart to argue, telling the truth: “I figured it out long ago. Xu Tu, Sister Zhang, Auntie Feng they’re all on your side.” Bai Jun lowered her head. “I don’t blame them. For a bad person like me, them helping you was an act of justice.”
Perhaps because she had hit on the truth, Lin Song was silent for a while. Then, while driving, she suddenly started laughing to herself.
“Turns out I’m not the only miserable one. So?” For some reason, Lin Song was suddenly very happy. She continued with a smile, “How do you plan to handle your relationship with Xu Tu?”
“Her work ability is quite good, and I just realized she’s quite kind-hearted,” Bai Jun said, recalling Xu Tu’s words. “She even said she wanted to take me out to clear my head… Maybe we’ll become friends in the future?”
Bai Jun lacked any confidence while saying this. She didn’t even know if she had a future; she couldn’t imagine what her life would look like moving forward.
“Xu Tu lied to you, yet you still think she’s good and are willing to be friends with her.” For some reason, Lin Song was angry again, her voice turning cold. “But when it comes to me, you’re certain I’m some scorpion-hearted woman focused only on revenge thinking only of finishing your atonement and then never seeing each other again. Bai Jun, I must have owed you in a past life!”
Lin Song’s temper was truly hard to read! Bai Jun really couldn’t understand what she was thinking. Xu Tu was on her side—was it wrong for her to praise Xu Tu?
But she seemed to have upset Lin Song again. Bai Jun glanced at Lin Song through the rearview mirror several times. Lin Song’s jaw was tight; she looked very angry.
“You aren’t a ‘bad woman’ in my heart,” she said softly, thinking carefully since she knew Lin Song didn’t like apologies. “Though after seeing the USB Zhan Hui sent me and knowing Lin Feng is your father, I did suspect you. I thought you were in league with him. But after watching The Rebel, I realized you could never reconcile with Lin Feng.”
The program The Rebel had detailed Lin Song’s background. Although Bai Jun had heard it from Sister Zhang, seeing it was far more shocking. Lin Song’s mother was paralyzed and unable to move, and Lin Song had looked after her entirely, which was why she was so good at caring for people.
When the show asked about the origin of Lin Song’s name—no matter how poor other children’s families were, their parents would give them a name representing hope. But Lin Song’s name was settled by Lin Feng on a whim in less than a minute. “My father’s surname is Lin and my mother’s is Song. My father just casually said my name is Lin Song.”
In the show, Lin Song was young but very independent and loved her mother dearly, taking care of her as best she could. Such a girl wouldn’t be held hostage by family ties to reconcile with Lin Feng.
Therefore, the incident where a car hit her was most likely arranged by Lin Feng after being bought off by Zhan Hui. Lin Song was unaware. As for why Zhan Hui sought out Lin Feng, Bai Jun felt it was likely deliberate, so if everything were exposed, he could shift the blame onto Lin Song. After all, Lin Song was her wife. If something happened to Bai Jun, Lin Song would inherit a huge share of the estate.
Thinking of this, Bai Jun’s slow mind realized something was off: if Zhan Hui had arranged it this way, it was impossible for him not to instruct Lin Feng to implicate Lin Song from prison. Yet Lin Song was perfectly fine.
“No wonder. So you found out about the relationship between Lin Feng and me.” Lin Song’s emotions seemed extremely unsettled. She pulled the car over to the side of the road. After a while, she spoke in a dull voice: “A child of a murderer is likely a murderer as well. It’s not wrong for you to think of me that way.”
“No!” Bai Jun panicked, seeing her comfort had the opposite effect. “You… you suffered so much because of him when you were little. I only feel heartache for you now, which makes it even harder for me to forgive myself. I have no right to feel heartache for you,” she said, tears nearly falling. “I added to your suffering. I’m afraid you’ll think I’m being hypocritical.”
After saying this, she bit her lower lip, hating herself for not being able to speak correctly and causing Lin Song more pain. She couldn’t even atone properly; instead, she added to Lin Song’s sadness. Tears flowed uncontrollably in large drops. How could a person like her have the face to live in this world?
Everything before her eyes began to blur, and her body started to tremble.
“Why are you more upset than I am?”
Lin Song sighed, opened the back door, and sat beside her. She lay her head in Bai Jun’s lap, taking her trembling hand. “Don’t you want to atone? I have a headache right now. Can you rub it for me, please?”
Lin Song carefully wiped away her tears, meeting her tearful eyes. “Stop crying. Actually, I really didn’t want you to know about my relationship with Lin Feng before.” At that time, she was terrified that Bai Jun would hold it against her. “But since you already know, there are some things I should tell you. Otherwise, you might think I’m a bad woman plotting for your wealth and life.”
She placed her index finger over Bai Jun’s lips. “Of course, I’m certainly no saint, and I did have motives while by your side. I’ll admit to what I’ve done, but I don’t want you to misunderstand what I haven’t.”
She gestured with her eyes, and Bai Jun’s trembling hands began to massage her pressure points. Lin Song closed her eyes and, after a moment, spoke softly.
“Actually, I recognized Lin Feng as the driver while at the hospital. So I went to the police afterward and voluntarily confessed my relationship with him. Lin Feng was caught because I lured him out.”
She had ignored Lin Feng’s extortion, but Lin Feng should never have touched Bai Jun. He had crossed her line. Realizing Bai Jun was focused on her words and her hands had stopped trembling, Lin Song continued: “So from start to finish, the police never suspected me. He had asked me for money before, and I never agreed. During that time, I received another message from him saying he hit you on purpose.” At this point, Lin Song’s voice grew cold, and she gave a cold laugh. “He said if I didn’t give him money, I would be the one he hit next. I deliberately provoked him, telling him he didn’t have the ability. I guessed he would follow me, so I deliberately made myself a target, often appearing alone in deserted places.”
Bai Jun remembered Lin Song’s complicated video backgrounds from a certain period and understood. Her eyes widened. “Then the injury on your hand back then…”
As expected, Bai Jun’s guess was correct.
“He cut it,” Lin Song said with a light laugh. “He ran out of money and finally couldn’t hold back, wanting to get money from me. But he didn’t get off easy. Before he went to prison, the bodyguards I hired kicked and broke two of his ribs.”
Lin Song made it sound simple, but the situation had been incredibly dangerous. Once Lin Feng realized she was deliberately luring him into a trap, he became desperate. That knife had nearly pierced her heart.
Bai Jun pursed her lips. She had always thought Lin Song was working overtime during that period. She never imagined Lin Song had been putting herself in harm’s way, facing life-threatening danger at any moment.
“So…” Seeing her daze, Lin Song sat up from her lap and reached out to pinch her cheek in dissatisfaction. “A person like me holds grudges and has a big temper. You’ve been making me angry these past few days, and the tally in my heart is growing. What should I do, Junjun?”
She looked into Bai Jun’s stunned eyes, her smile triumphant and bold. “The debt you owe seems like it can’t be repaid in a lifetime!”
