The Venomous Wife Let Me Go - Chapter 26.2
Finally, she opened her mouth. The bitter liquid flowed in, and the anxiety and stagnation that had overwhelmed her began to subside. Her throat felt dry, and her eyelids grew heavy.
So bitter!
She gagged reflexively, her tears falling drop by drop as she drifted back into a deep sleep.
By the time she woke up again, it was evening. Lin Song hadn’t gone back to the office; she seemed to have been guarding her the whole time. The moment Bai Jun stirred, Lin Song took her hand.
“Jun-jun, do you feel better?”
Bai Jun stared blankly at the ceiling for a long time before letting out a soft “Mm.” She tried to recall why she had lost control. She only remembered that the joss paper ingots felt familiar; everything else was a blank.
However, a familiar yet strange sense of exhaustion suddenly welled up within her. She felt listless, as if she had lost interest in everything.
The medication was working again. It began to shield her from joy and anger, leaving her unable to feel love or hate. When she first learned she had depression, she hadn’t felt much; she only knew that bad moods would occasionally hijack her body. Now, she had a tangible experience of it: her condition was starting to manifest physically.
What was the next step?
Her heart turned cold. She bit her lip, suddenly afraid to stop her medication again. She had to take it on time, struggle to live, and live well.
“Jun-jun, did you remember anything?” Lin Song asked. Her voice sounded normal, but the grip on Bai Jun’s hand was incredibly tight.
Lin Song was afraid.
Was she afraid that I’d remember the truth? That I’d realize she’s trying to steal my fortune?
Bai Jun felt a profound sense of irony deep within, but on the surface, she simply shook her head.
“I didn’t remember anything.”
Lin Song seemed to breathe a sigh of relief. “That’s good.”
“Jun-jun, don’t think about the sad things anymore. The past is the past.” She leaned in closer, carefully pulling Bai Jun into a tight embrace and soothing her softly. “We have a very long future ahead of us. From now on, I will do everything in my power to protect you well and never let you feel sad again.”
Bai Jun pursed her lips. If she were her former self, the one who hadn’t noticed any red flags, she would have been overjoyed to hear those words, believing Lin Song truly loved her. But at this moment, she lacked the mental energy to deal with her.
She felt nothing but an immense exhaustion and wanted to sink back into a deep sleep. For a very long time, it seemed she hadn’t slept well; her chest felt empty, and she felt a desperate urge to catch up on rest.
“I want to sleep more. I’m very tired.” She touched Lin Song’s face. The warmth of her palm helped her regain some of her senses. She couldn’t help but force a smile at Lin Song. “You’re tired too. You should get some rest as well.”
She felt exhausted after only a few days of acting alongside Lin Song; could Lin Song really not be tired after acting for so long?
Lin Song did not speak. She stared at Bai Jun’s face, her eyes turning red, and suddenly hugged her tightly.
“Jun-jun.” “Mm.” “Jun-jun.” “Mm?”
Lin Song seemed incredibly uneasy, calling her name over and over again. The force of the embrace was so strong that Bai Jun could barely breathe. Already sleepy, Bai Jun grew increasingly irritable at the calls. Losing the patience to be perfunctory, she frowned and looked at her.
“What exactly are you trying to say?”
The words that followed were caught in Bai Jun’s throat. Lin Song’s eyes were bloodshot, her gaze filled with sorrow and despair. Looking at her through a veil of tears, she seemed utterly devastated. “Don’t smile like that.”
“I’m not even allowed to smile?” Bai Jun frowned. Though she said it, she reached out and carefully smoothed the furrow in Lin Song’s brow. This “wicked woman” had certainly grown bold, trying to control how she smiled!
“Sorry, I just suddenly remembered some sad things.” Lin Song seemed to realize her reaction belatedly. With red eyes, she forced an apologetic smile and quickly lowered her head.
“You don’t look very good when you smile like that,” Bai Jun replied, returning the sentiment with a touch of spite. “Don’t smile like that anymore.”
She didn’t actually mean it. In truth, the way the wicked woman looked with her eyes reddened was quite touching and incredibly beautiful.
“Really?” The wicked woman truly cared about her image. Upon hearing this, she looked up and wiped her tears. “If Jun-jun doesn’t like it, I won’t smile like that anymore.”
Bai Jun was so drowsy that she didn’t want to worry about what the woman was thinking. “I’m really sleepy.”
She let out a yawn and closed her eyes. Remembering her appointment with Bai Hong the next day, she instructed Lin Song, “Remember to set an alarm for me at 7:30 tomorrow morning.”
Lin Song always woke up early; by 7:30, she would likely already be at work. Drowsiness surged over her again, and she closed her eyes. After a long while, she heard Lin Song give a soft “Mm” before leaning in to hold her gently once more.
“Not just tomorrow. we will have many, many tomorrows.”
When the alarm woke her the next morning, Lin Song was indeed no longer by her side. Sunlight streamed through the window, casting mottled shadows on the new flowers Lin Song had bought for the bedside table, making them look magnificent.
Bai Jun lingered in bed for a while, staring blankly at the sunlight. She reached out to watch the shadows of her hands in the light, wanting to think about nothing. However, the trivial matters of life always interrupt those rare moments of peace.
Xu Tu called. “President Bai, is it alright if I pick you up in half an hour?”
Bai Jun blinked and agreed. She got out of bed, changed her clothes, and tidied her appearance. She hadn’t taken a good look at herself in a long time. When she saw the face in the mirror, she felt dazed. Perhaps due to secretly stopping her medication, she looked like a withered flower her eyes were dull, lacking the vibrancy and spirit she had recently.
She didn’t like this version of herself. In her plans, her adult self was supposed to be a woman who was resilient, undeterred by hardships, and full of fighting spirit, not someone who fell apart after a few setbacks.
So, what if her aunt had turned against her? So, what if her wife was a big liar?
She shook her head, hiding a certain thought deep in her heart. Encountering these things was unlucky enough! She couldn’t collapse because of them. If the “followers” who trailed behind her in elementary school found out, they would surely mock her.
Taking a few deep breaths, she smiled at her reflection again. At first, the smiles were forced. Remembering Lin Song’s expression when she smiled the night before, she finally understood how Lin Song felt that kind of smile really did look ugly.
As expected, the wicked woman had been judging her looks!
She pulled at her face, smiling at the mirror several more times. No matter how she smiled, she wasn’t satisfied. She looked like a desperate, numb doll with no attachments left to the world. As she smiled, tears even began to well up in her eyes.
Frowning, she was brought to tears by her own pathetic appearance and glared at herself in the mirror. After a long while, reflecting on this series of childish and boring actions, she couldn’t help but burst out laughing.
That laugh seemed to suddenly break a certain shackle. Her heart began to beat with purpose again. She shed that state of numbness, and a hint of her former spirit returned to her smile.
This was the real her. She gazed at herself in the mirror and curved her lips again. The woman in the mirror smiled back. It seemed that a bit of strength had gathered in her body once more.
So what if the world was a mess and showed nothing but malice? She still had herself. She could smile at herself. She quickly applied some light makeup until the person in the mirror finally looked presentable. Right then, Xu Tu called again.
Bai Jun met Bai Hong at a teahouse. Bai Hong was still in a wheelchair, her face pale. Noticing Bai Jun staring at the wheelchair, Bai Hong explained with a smile, “An infection occurred after the last surgery. I can’t stand up anymore. I have to take a lot of medicine every day now; I probably don’t have many days left to live.”
Bai Hong’s tone was casual, as if she wasn’t talking about her precarious health but rather something mundane.
Bai Jun’s eyes widened. She knew Bai Hong’s condition wasn’t good, but she hadn’t expected it to have deteriorated to this extent.
“Don’t talk nonsense! Aunt will definitely find a way!” Bai Jun’s mind was in turmoil. Facing Bai Hong’s pale face, her voice rose. “You should be resting properly, not running around everywhere.”
Bai Hong’s condition was so serious, yet she had come out alone today without any caregivers. What if…
Xu Tu, standing aside, also looked conflicted. In the two years she had been Bai Jun’s secretary, she had witnessed Bai Jun’s pain and had grown to loathe Bai Huayi and her daughter. Although Bai Hong had been undergoing treatment, she had never shown any malice toward Bai Jun over the years.
But Bai Hong seemed oblivious to the resentment, always lingering around Xu Tu and acting as if they were close. Xu Tu wished Bai Jun would never contact Bai Hong again.
However, Bai Hong had given her news about her sister. Xu Tu was born in a mountain village and originally had a sister. Her grandmother, who favored boys over girls, had given her sister away while their mother was working in the fields. Her mother spent her whole life missing her daughter and went blind from crying before being abandoned by her father. If it hadn’t been for Bai Jun’s financial help, Xu Tu wouldn’t have been able to continue her studies. Her mother’s lifelong wish was to find the sister.
She didn’t know where Bai Hong had gotten the information that she was looking for her sister. For Xu Tu, this was a massive favor. Moreover, Bai Hong had somehow discovered the anomaly and knew about Bai Jun’s amnesia. She promised she only wanted to see Bai Jun and would not tell anyone else about the memory loss, including her own mother.
That was why Xu Tu had acted as the intermediary. But Xu Tu hadn’t expected Bai Hong’s condition to be this dire. She disliked Bai Hong, but she had never imagined Bai Hong would die.
Bai Hong looked at Bai Jun, then at Xu Tu. “I’m joking! You two actually believed me!”
Bai Hong smiled again, her eyes curving like crescents, and actually lectured Bai Jun. “Sister Jun-jun, don’t believe others so easily in the future.”
“If it were really that serious, how could my mother feel safe letting me come out?” “I just recently had surgery and can’t make any big movements.”
Bai Jun watched Bai Hong’s expression closely. Now, she couldn’t tell which of Bai Hong’s words were true and which were false. Since childhood, Bai Hong had been an expert at pretending; even when her heart was in pain, she would act as if nothing were wrong to keep others from worrying.
But these words convinced Bai Jun, Bai Huayi valued Bai Hong’s life more than her own. If Bai Hong’s condition were truly critical, she wouldn’t have let her out.
“What exactly did you want to say to me by asking me out?” Bai Jun felt a sense of relief but looked at Bai Hong with a frown. “Don’t make those kinds of jokes again.”
“I won’t,” Bai Hong admitted her mistake obediently. “I want Sister Jun-jun to accompany me to City C.”
City C was the neighboring city, about an hour’s drive away. “I’ve wanted Sister Jun-jun to go with me for a long time, but I never found the chance. Please, Sister Jun-jun.”
Bai Jun didn’t want to agree at first. She shouldn’t get more involved with the people around Bai Huayi, and she wasn’t sure if Bai Hong’s body could handle the drive. But Bai Hong had always been sensible since they were young; this was the first time she had ever pleaded for something.
And besides, this seemed like a breakthrough. Perhaps she could use this opportunity to slowly test the waters and gradually leave Lin Song.
