The Useless Beauty Who Went Viral Across the Stars - Chapter 5
The view count for Lin Xiansheng’s evaluation report on the Starry Sea Academy’s official website was still growing fast.
Zhang Zhou kept refreshing the page. He clicked on it the exact moment it was posted, but all he saw was a blank screen.
“Damn, why is the official website down again?!”
At the same time, the campus forum was blowing up with posts:
[Did anyone get in? Can someone tell me Lin Xiansheng’s evaluation results?!]
[This terrible website is down every single day!]
[Wait! Oh shit, did I somehow get into the website?!!]
Unlike the students, inside the study with its classic orange-lit chandelier, Wang Xin sat at his desk with veins bulging on the back of his hands. His hair was messy, and he clutched the report tightly, his eyes red and bloodshot.
A subordinate stood nearby with lowered head, too afraid to speak. The atmosphere was very heavy.
With a loud crash, Wang Xin shoved the books on the desk onto the floor. He tapped the report in his hand and yelled at the subordinate, “What is the meaning of this?!!”
A cold drop of sweat formed on the subordinate’s forehead. He swallowed hard with a bitter taste in his mouth, not daring to make a single sound.
Wang Xin took a few deep breaths and kicked the desk hard. “Are you sure you did not grab the wrong report?!”
The subordinate trembled slightly and replied, “I am sure, sir. This is the right one.”
Actually, Wang Xin knew it was impossible to be wrong. After all, the owner’s name was printed clearly in black and white on the report.
Still, how could this be possible???
Wang Xin stared hard at the report. The words on it stabbed at his eyes:
Teacher: Lin Xiansheng
Evaluation Result, Mental Power: A
Physical Fitness: F
Student Evaluation: A
And the final line: Your comprehensive score is 93. Congratulations on passing this evaluation.
Teachers at the Mecha Academy were public officials. Their mental power evaluations were handled by the Capital Cathedral and were extremely strict, making mistakes impossible.
So how could that useless person have an A-rank in mental power?!
Compared to physical fitness, which could possibly be improved through special training, mental power was almost set at birth. Skipping five levels was out of the question—even skipping one level was impossible!
An A-rank in mental power meant it belonged to less than one percent of the millions of people in the vast capital.
Someone who usually had an F-rank in mental power was now suddenly told he had jumped to an A-rank. What a joke?!!
Wang Xin’s own report was still sitting on the desk.
Mental Power: B
Physical Fitness: C
Student Evaluation: C
Yet his comprehensive score was only 69.
A B-rank in mental power was quite good for a teacher, but put the two papers side by side, and compared to an A-rank, it fell completely short.
The higher the level, the bigger the gap between them.
Do not look at the mere one-level difference between A and B; that single level was like a deep chasm, nothing like going from D to C or C to B.
He was actually worse than that good-for-nothing?! Wang Xin felt like his face had been slapped a few times, burning hot with pain.
Meanwhile, a storm was brewing on the campus forum:
[Damn, did you guys hear? Someone got into the report page and saw Lin Xiansheng’s mental power reached A-rank!!]
1L: Holy crap, Lin Xiansheng from the Repair Department? Are you kidding me?? How is that possible??
2L: Why would I lie to you? If you do not believe it, go check that post from earlier. I will send you the link.
15L: Which post? Give it to me fast! I want to go watch!!
47L: Good person, send it to me too.
103L: I want it too!!
In less than five minutes, the post grew to hundreds of replies, and it was growing visibly.
Forum posts and replies increased in explosive numbers. After seeing that so-called screenshot, a few minutes later, besides the official website, the campus forum server could not handle the huge number of visitors and posters. After lagging a few times, it crashed on the spot…
On this doomed, explosive, and chaotic night, Lin Xiansheng, the center of attention, had a very good sleep.
When he woke up the next day, his mental state was arguably the best it had been in months.
Outside the window, the morning sun was slowly rising, turning the sky a golden red. The morning light shone through the window onto Lin Xiansheng, giving his pale skin a hint of normal color.
As his drifting spirit returned to his body, Lin Xiansheng opened his eyes, revealing a pair of extremely exotic, cold, and cruel violet pupils, like those of a cold-blooded animal.
He reached out with his finely-boned fingers and picked up the contact lenses from the bedside table. The exotic pupils that had looked strange in the sunlight were covered up, turning back into normal, soft blue eyes.
The garbage dump area at six in the morning was very quiet, and the main road was empty. Normally, he would walk through the streets alone, leave the garbage dump area to rush to the academy, and spend a peaceful day.
But early in the morning, the moment he turned on his mobile terminal, a string of phone calls came pouring in.
The young man twitched the corner of his eye, suddenly getting a bad feeling.
The person calling was Li Cheng, one of his few good friends at school. Li Cheng was from the neighboring R&D Academy and was the unlucky teacher who had originally planned to sub for his classes, only to be sent away on a research trip to a very remote and barren planet.
He hesitated for a moment, then decided to answer the call. “Good morning.”
“Good morning… No, wait…!” Because he was too excited, Li Cheng’s voice stuttered for a moment. He licked his lips, and after calming down a bit, Li Cheng quickly asked, “Did you see your evaluation?”
“… Huh?”
Hearing the confusion in his friend’s voice, Li Cheng reminded him, “Today is the day teacher evaluation results come out!”
“Ah!” Lin Xiansheng finally remembered.
The young man’s pleasant voice came through the terminal, without a trace of hurry.
Li Cheng clicked his tongue. Why wasn’t the person involved even in a rush?
These past few days, with the death of the Repair Department’s vice president, he knew the public talk around campus. He could not think of how Lin Xiansheng, whose mental power and physical fitness met none of the standards, could pass this year’s teacher evaluation.
He had been so worried he could not sleep, even pulling strings a few times to help Lin Xiansheng out. But on the day he contacted the chief evaluator, the chief evaluator had a strange look on his face and told him to go back and wait for the results.
At the time, he was extremely anxious, but now, Li Cheng understood why the chief evaluator had reacted that way.
Li Cheng shook his head helplessly. Although he did not know why Lin Xiansheng’s mental power suddenly shot up to A-rank—an A-rank, something he could only look up to—the results were out, and dwelling on it was pointless.
Li Cheng cracked a smile and said, “Did you know your mental power was rated A-rank? I will say congratulations first, but my god, how did you do that? That is an A-rank!”
Lin Xiansheng: “……?”
Wait, something felt wrong.
Shouldn’t it be a C-rank??
The young man had been a bit sleepy, but now he was wide awake.
The reason he decided to stay at the school was partly for money, and partly because he liked the perks of being a Mecha Academy teacher, which could save him a lot of trouble. Therefore, to avoid failing the test, he had intentionally boosted his mental power a bit during the mental power assessment. But even with that boost, it should have only reached a C-rank, barely passing the school’s requirement line for teachers.
Jumping from F to C was pretty wild, but the interstellar world was huge, and a couple of cases like that were not impossible; it would probably fade from public view after a while.
Yet going from F to A had no precedent in thousands of years of imperial history.
If this news got out, did he expect it to die down? The entire interstellar world would shake.
He really only raised his mental power by a tiny bit. How did it go from F to A?!
The young man pressed his lips together, already thinking about whether he should pack up and run.
In the end, he still went to the school.
It was eight in the morning when he arrived.
Lin Xiansheng thought today might not be quiet, but he did not expect it to be this noisy. The moment he walked through the school gate, students walking on the path all stopped in their tracks at the same time. Silence fell instantly as countless pairs of eyes stared straight at him, as if looking at a monster.
Lin Xiansheng calmly walked right through the middle of the path.
An invisible wave of mental power spread from him. A look of confusion appeared on other people’s faces, and a few seconds later, some of their expressions changed subtly.
It was too weak. This mental fluctuation could not possibly be an A-rank mental power. Who knew if he just used some trick to pass the evaluation?
Feeling the change in other people’s attitudes, Lin Xiansheng was very satisfied. Goodness knew how scared he was of things blowing up and drawing a lot of attention.
He lowered his eyes without any reaction and walked calmly down the wide road. Suddenly, Lin Xiansheng looked up. At the same time, a flash of light reflected off the white Teaching Building Number 3 in the distance.
However, the distance was too far. A few students were walking back and forth sparsely along the teaching building corridor, and nothing seemed out of the ordinary.
After a moment of hesitation, Lin Xiansheng finally changed direction and headed toward Teaching Building Number 2, where the Repair Department was located.
Pulling his head back fast and holding his breath while hiding behind a pillar, Zhang Zhou had a crying expression on his face. After a moment, he cautiously peeked his head out to observe, and only when he confirmed Lin Xiansheng had left did he finally let out a sigh of relief.
At that moment, the boy’s feelings were as complicated as could be, and his mouth tasted unusually bitter.
With a toothache, he opened his terminal and clicked into his gamer friend group chat. Just a few minutes of not looking this morning, and the messages were already 99+.
Little Fafa: @LoneBoat, brother, do not forget what we agreed on!
Long Live Lord Cheng: Hehehe, I told you your teacher was not ordinary! Go on, do not forget to record an apology video while you are at it!
Followed by a long line of agreeing comments.
Zhang Zhou: “…”
He had never regretted anything more than this. If he had known this would happen, he never would have done it in the first place. Especially since all these online friends knew how much he hated Lin Xiansheng, and now none of them were sleeping in, waiting to watch him make a fool of himself.
He should not have let his head get hot and accepted that bet!
But it was too late for regrets now. Staring blankly at the sky, Zhang Zhou started doubting his life. He could not figure out how Lin Xiansheng passed the evaluation no matter how hard he thought.
Could Lin Xiansheng really be some kind of hidden big shot?
Wandering around the campus in a daze, he finally made it to the cafeteria. While still dazed, Zhang Zhou bumped into someone.
“Hiss.” Zhang Zhou clutched his aching shoulder and snapped back to reality. Before he could even see who he bumped into, he blurted out, “Are you okay?”
“I am fine.”
That voice sounded a bit familiar. Zhang Zhou looked up and saw a boy with black hair, green eyes, and a cute look frowning, turning his head away with an unhappy expression on the opposite side.
Seeing that familiar face, Zhang Zhou’s eyes widened. “Why are you here?” He did not expect to run into Lu Jing here.
Zhang Zhou was a game streamer, and the two of them had met in a game. Later, they found out they attended the same school, and combined with their shared strong wish for Lin Xiansheng to leave the school quickly, they grew close not long after.
However, they were in different majors, and the campus was huge, so it was hard to run into each other without planning.
This area was still a bit far from the Repair Department, so Zhang Zhou was quite surprised to run into Lu Jing here.
“Tch.” Lu Jing pouted without answering, and instead demanded, “Did you see Lin Xiansheng’s evaluation results?”
Bringing up something he wanted to avoid, Zhang Zhou’s mouth twitched. “I saw it.”
Mentioning this made Lu Jing angry. Like a puffed-up little cat, he shouted in disbelief, “He actually passed? How could he pass!!”
“Sigh.” Zhang Zhou shrugged. After being confused for so long, he finally gave up and prepared to go apologize to Lin Xiansheng later. “No matter what, he passed. Whatever you and I say is useless.”
“That is not the point!” Lu Jing glared with his pretty green cat-like eyes. “The point is he actually, actually tricked my feelings!” By the end, the boy even sounded a bit wronged, acting just like a little bride who had been scammed.
Zhang Zhou squeezed a few words out through his teeth: “What did he trick you out of?”
“His mental power was clearly A-rank, but he kept it hidden from us all this time! To think I always felt he was so pitiful, wasting so many of my feelings!”
“… Maybe he cheated on the test this time.”
“Impossible,” Lu Jing said firmly. This was the only thing he was completely sure about. “Anyway, Lin Xiansheng definitely hid a lot of other things from me. I will not stop until I figure it out!”
“Then what are you planning to do?”
Lu Jing frowned and thought about it. “I am going to his house to take a look.”
Zhang Zhou’s eyes flickered. If he went along too, that would be a great time to apologize! Besides, all sorts of suspicious clues showed that Lin Xiansheng really seemed a bit unusual.
He quickly said, “Then I am going too.” Pausing as he remembered something, he asked, “Hey, come to think of it, I remember that Mecha Academy teachers have the right to live in the capital, and usually the school assigns housing to teachers in the capital. But Lin Xiansheng does not seem to live in the capital. Do you know where he lives?”
Lu Jing answered righteously, “Do you think I know?”
Zhang Zhou: “……”
“Well, nothing we can do then. Mecha Academy teacher records are confidential, so we probably cannot find out,” Zhang Zhou sighed.
“Who says we cannot find out?” Seeing Zhang Zhou look so helpless, Lu Jing snorted, made a phone call right then and there, and told someone to send him Lin Xiansheng’s address.
A moment later, his terminal flashed, and someone quickly sent over Lin Xiansheng’s residential address.
Zhang Zhou felt a bit dazed for a second. Was this the power of privilege?
Still, he felt a little conflicted. “Uh, but after all, this is privacy. Is this okay?” He knew that digging into a Mecha Academy teacher’s privacy broke imperial law. If they got caught, Lu Jing would surely be fine, but he himself was hard to predict.
The green-eyed boy rolled his eyes in disgust. “Lin Xiansheng gave us his address back then so we could mail him packages. I am just going to ask the class monitor. Where did your mind go?”
Hearing this, Zhang Zhou let out a breath of relief. That was fine then. So he immediately leaned over to Lu Jing’s side, looking at the info on the terminal light screen.
Among the bunch of address details on the screen, a few words stood out clearly:
Garbage District…
Ah, the Garbage District. He knew that place.
Wait, the Garbage District??!
