Chapter 7: No More Pretending How Could He Have Feelings For His Younger Brother
Once Lu Yunchuan realized what was happening, he pulled his leg off his brother. He felt a bit awkward but also found it slightly amusing; to think that a simple hug from him could make his big brother react like that. How could he have that kind of physical reaction to his own younger brother?
Lu Yunchuan slowly moved away from Fu Xici. The room was pitch black, so he couldn’t see his brother’s expression. He only whispered in confusion: Brother?
Fu Xici turned over and didn’t answer. He kept his back to him, making no sound at all. After a moment of silence, Lu Yunchuan slowly propped himself up, leaned over his brother’s shoulder, and whispered: Are you… thinking about women?
Fu Xici had never been in a relationship; he likely never even got married before he died in the previous life. Lu Yunchuan was the same—circumstances hadn’t allowed him such luxuries, so he had no experience with a partner either.
At this thought, Lu Yunchuan decided he needed to find a girlfriend for his brother as soon as possible. He didn’t know many people, but that dog Huo Yanxiu certainly did. He’d ask that guy for help.
Seeing that Fu Xici was ignoring him, he stopped bothering him, pulled up the quilt, and went to sleep. He didn’t think much of Fu Xici’s reaction; they were both men, it was just human nature. If anything, it proved that his brother’s “functions” were perfectly normal.
The next day, he and his brother woke up together as usual. After tying his brother’s tie, they headed out. The rest of the Fu family was still eating breakfast, and he ignored them. From across the dining room, he heard Fu Lingchuan whisper to their parents: “Second Brother doesn’t even say hello when he leaves.”
Fu Kaijiang gave a cold snort. Lu Yunchuan heard it, but he just thought to himself: Big Brother didn’t say hello either. Besides, nobody was pretending anymore, so neither would he. He couldn’t be bothered.
As soon as he got to school, he threw the book directly at Huo Yanxiu’s face. Huo Yanxiu scrambled to hide it in his desk drawer, terrified. Lu Yunchuan warned him through gritted teeth: “If you ever stuff this trash in my bag again, I’ll take it straight to your house and hand it to your mother. Try me.”
Huo Yanxiu clicked his tongue. “A-Chuan, you’ve changed. You don’t love me anymore.”
Lu Yunchuan almost gagged on his breakfast. “Stop disgusting me.”
Huo Yanxiu leaned his head on Lu Yunchuan’s shoulder. “I’ll disgust you all I want. Did you see the big news yesterday? Men can actually get pregnant these days.”
Lu Yunchuan pulled out his English textbook and replied flatly: “Good. It liberates millions of women. Since some men are so flamboyant anyway, it’s about time they shared the burden of childbirth.”
Huo Yanxiu’s chest vibrated with laughter. Then why don’t you have one for me to see?
Lu Yunchuan shrugged his shoulder to nudge him off. Wait for the technology to become mainstream. If I could, I wouldn’t hesitate.
Huo Yanxiu corrected him: The man on the trending search yesterday was a natural pregnancy, no technology involved. Ever since same-sex marriage was legalized, all sorts of anti-science things have started happening.
Lu Yunchuan wasn’t interested and didn’t believe it. He just humored Huo Yanxiu with a few words. Whether men could give birth had nothing to do with him; same-sex marriage laws didn’t affect him either—he didn’t like men.
This thought reminded him of his brother. He finally turned his attention back to Huo Yanxiu: You know a lot of people in this circle. Are there any young socialites who are gentle, kind, and not yet engaged?
Huo Yanxiu frowned in dissatisfaction. Why? You want to start dating?
Lu Yunchuan shook his head. “Not for me, for my brother. He’s twenty-six, and no one in the family is arranging a marriage for him. I think he’s lonely; he needs a wife.”
Huo Yanxiu shook his head. “I know plenty of people, but would any of them look at your brother? Everyone knows he’s…” a fool, but he didn’t say it out loud, fearing another scolding from Lu Yunchuan.
Lu Yunchuan knew that was a major hurdle. “Just look around for me. Aside from his speech impediment, his intelligence is fine, and he’s so handsome. There has to be a woman who would like him.”
Huo Yanxiu told him to forget it. “If he were going to inherit the Fu estate, people would be breaking down your door to propose. But he’s not the favorite, and the Fu family’s future has nothing to do with him. What decent person would let their daughter marry into that just to suffer?”
It was the harsh truth, and it hurt Lu Yunchuan to hear it. Just because the Fu family didn’t take him seriously, no one even considered a marriage for Fu Xici.
Lu Yunchuan fell silent. Seeing his dampened spirits, Huo Yanxiu relented: Fine, I’ll ask around for you. But the chances are slim, so don’t get your hopes up.
Lu Yunchuan punched him on the shoulder. You better look properly. If you can’t find anyone, I’ll twist your head off.
Huo Yanxiu gave a roguish grin. If you’re willing to date me, I might consider finding a good match for your brother.
Lu Yunchuan gritted his teeth. Get lost, you dead gay.
Huo Yanxiu stopped pretending entirely. “A-Chuan, I’m serious. I really am interested in you.”
Just then, the homeroom teacher, Liu Yifei, arrived at the classroom door. Lu Yunchuan immediately raised his hand. “Teacher! Huo Yanxiu is bothering me. He’s reading extracurricular books in class, dozing off, and not listening. I request a seat change; he’s too much of a distraction.”
Liu Yifei pointed at Huo Yanxiu. “You, to my office. Bring that book. Don’t make me search your desk.”
Huo Yanxiu: …
Lu Yunchuan hummed a little tune, gloating: Young Master Huo, off you go.
Huo Yanxiu glared at him coldly. Is this your attitude when asking for a favor? Fu Yunchuan, I hate you.
Huo Yanxiu went to the office, but he didn’t bring the book; he tore it to pieces and threw it in the trash at the back of the class. Lu Yunchuan slammed the desk laughing. Serves you right!
Even after being lectured by the teacher, Huo Yanxiu remained his usual cheeky self. After class, he invited Lu Yunchuan to the bathroom for a smoke.
Lu Yunchuan refused. “I’ve quit. We good students don’t smoke.”
Huo Yanxiu:
He spoke as if it were true, but by the third period break, he was still dragged to the bathroom by Huo Yanxiu to share a cigarette. Lu Yunchuan warned him while puffing: “Stop leading me astray, okay? Just because you’re a lost cause doesn’t mean you have to stop me from improving.”
Huo Yanxiu sneered. “If you, Fu Yunchuan, can actually turn into a ‘good student,’ I’ll eat sh*t while doing a handstand.”
Lu Yunchuan gritted his teeth, took the half-finished cigarette out of his mouth, and tossed it into the sink. Start practicing then. This time next year, I’m going to watch you eat it.
In the afternoon, Fu Xici picked up Lu Yunchuan as usual. Neither brother knew what was waiting for them at home. Lu Yunchuan told Fu Xici about the stupid things Huo Yanxiu did at school, laughing heartily. Fu Xici looked at him, and a smile unconsciously touched his lips. If he could speak normally, he would have loved to be his brother’s comedic duo partner, but he couldn’t finish a whole sentence.
Lu Yunchuan didn’t mind. If his brother didn’t answer, he just kept talking himself. Seeing his brother smile made him happy. His brother’s laugh was a deep, resonant bass that was incredibly pleasant to the ear.
However, the moment they got home, Fu Xici was called to the study by Fu Kaijiang. Lu Yunchuan had a bad feeling. Fu Yunzhou and Fu Lingchuan were sitting on the sofa in the living room watching him. Fu Yunzhou, in particular, looked like a petty man who had just come into power.
Seeing Lu Yunchuan, Fu Yunzhou said snidely: Someone is about to be swept out the door. It’s a joy to behold. Did you really think Big Brother could protect you? What’s the use of sucking up to him? He can’t even protect himself.
If this were the old Lu Yunchuan, his fist would have already landed on Fu Yunzhou’s face. But now, he acted like he hadn’t heard a thing and went straight to his brother’s room. Fu Lingchuan watched him disappear, a flash of triumph in his eyes.
In the study, Fu Kaijiang’s voice wasn’t as authoritative as usual; he sounded almost as if he were trying to negotiate. Eldest, you are the oldest child and the most sensible. I know you’re reluctant to let Yunchuan go, and so am I. But we must give his biological parents an explanation. Your mother and I struggled for a long time before making this decision.
Fu Xici just looked his father in the eye. His gaze was cold. Since speaking was difficult and he couldn’t get words out quickly, he simply chose not to speak.
Fu Kaijiang sat at the mahogany desk, his fingers lightly tapping the surface. Your mother and I will give him a sum of money. I hope you stop meddling in his affairs. You are the eldest son of the Fu family. Your real brother is back, and you won’t even spare him a glance? Do you really consider Yunchuan your brother?
Fu Xici’s lean hands slowly clenched into fists. He used his eyes to ask his father: Was eighteen years of affection all a lie?
Apparently, his father didn’t understand the question in his eyes. Fu Kaijiang made his final call: “Summer vacation is coming. Once his Gaokao is over, let him leave this house. Lingchuan has suffered for eighteen years; your mother and I feel so guilty. We’re afraid that seeing Yunchuan will remind him of his past hardships. We both feel for him.”
At this, Fu Xici lost his patience. He turned and stormed out, slamming the carved bronze door of the study with a massive BANG. Fu Kaijiang jumped in surprise.
Exiting the study, Fu Xici cast a look toward Fu Lingchuan and Fu Yunzhou. His gaze was devoid of warmth, sharp and cutting like a blade. Fu Lingchuan shivered at the sight and hurriedly looked away. Wasn’t he supposed to be a fool? Why were his eyes so terrifying…
Fu Xici walked through the corridor and returned to his room.
Lu Yunchuan felt the heavy atmosphere and feared his father had said something terrible to his brother. After an anxious wait, Fu Xici returned with a dark expression. As soon as he entered, Lu Yunchuan shut the door, pulled him to the sofa, and checked his mood: “Did Dad scold you?
Seeing Lu Yunchuan’s worried face, Fu Xici’s gaze instantly softened. He took his younger brother’s hand in his palm, looked into his eyes, and after a long struggle, managed to say two words: No… fear.
Lu Yunchuan pouted helplessly. I’m not afraid. I can survive anywhere. I just… I can’t leave you.
Fu Xici held Lu Yunchuan’s hand between both of his own, rubbing it gently. He looked down at Lu Yunchuan’s slender, boney hand, then spoke again: Have… Brother.
He really couldn’t get the words out, so he reached for his phone and opened WeChat. He typed slowly, even though it looked smooth. What would take others seconds took him a minute. His well-defined hands shook slightly; his fingers were long and even, with well-shaped, healthy nails. His hands were beautiful and proportionate to his tall frame.
He finished a message and showed it to Lu Yunchuan. It read:
As long as I am in this house, no one will bully you. Go to school with a peace of mind. As for your biological parents, if you don’t want to go back, don’t. I have money to support you. When I save enough, the two of us will move out.
Lu Yunchuan’s eyes instantly reddened. He bit his lip, looked at Fu Xici’s face, and threw himself into his brother’s arms again. He hugged his brother’s shoulders tightly, his nose stinging. “Brother, you’re the best brother in the world. I love you so much.”
Fu Xici put down his phone. He slowly raised one hand to stroke the back of Lu Yunchuan’s neck, his chin resting against the soft silver hair. His heart rate began to climb again.
It was pounding like a trapped deer.
Love… is it?
