Chapter 6: Brother Hold Me
Fu Xici’s behavior made Lu Yunchuan’s heart melt with tenderness. Although Big Brother was slow in his actions, he was crystal clear in his mind about who was good and who was bad. His heart was like a mirror; he had known all along that Lu Yunchuan hadn’t liked him since starting middle school.
Thinking of this, Lu Yunchuan felt a wave of guilt. He had assumed that in his “silly” state, his brother couldn’t even distinguish who treated him well, but it turned out he knew everything.
Big Brother’s car was a niche brand he’d hardly heard of. It looked like an off-road vehicle but cost no more than 300,000 yuan. The interior was spacious—a five-seater. In an era where fully autonomous smart cars were sweeping the market, Big Brother still drove a very ordinary car. No typical wealthy heir would be seen in a brand like this.
Originally, Lu Yunchuan had planned to take his driver’s license test after his eighteenth birthday and buy a Cullinan so he wouldn’t be outshone by Huo Yanxiu. When that guy turned eighteen, his family gave him a Lamborghini. Huo Yanxiu drove it around showily, making everyone envious; girls couldn’t take their eyes off him.
Lu Yunchuan realized he used to be quite vain, loving to compete with others in everything except grades. As the most famous “tough guy” at the elite academy, if someone got something new, he would surely get something more expensive to flaunt his status. Looking back now, it was ridiculous. Nothing was better than living a grounded life; only by being alive can one create value.
Big Brother drove slowly too. A trip from home to school that should take ten minutes took him nearly half an hour. However, this actually reassured Lu Yunchuan; it proved Big Brother’s basic intelligence was intact and he had the functional capacity of an adult.
He had been a real scoundrel in his previous life. Living in the Fu house for eighteen years, he hadn’t paid much attention to his brother, let alone observed his life. Now, everything he saw made his heart ache. He never expected that Big Brother would be the only person in the Fu family who truly cared for him.
Big Brother dropped him off at the school gate. Lu Yunchuan said goodbye, telling him to drive carefully. Big Brother wanted to say something but couldn’t get it out. Lu Yunchuan waited patiently, but after struggling for a long time, Big Brother simply took out his phone and showed Lu Yunchuan his WeChat QR code.
Lu Yunchuan understood immediately. He scanned the code and added him. Only after the request was accepted did Big Brother drive away.
I didn’t even have Big Brother’s contact info. So after I left the Fu house in the last life, he must have been looking for me, right?
Lu Yunchuan sighed and entered the school. Just as he boarded the campus shuttle to the teaching building, his phone buzzed. He checked it: Big Brother had transferred him 50,000 yuan.
Lu Yunchuan: “…”
In the eyes of the old Lu Yunchuan, 50,000 yuan was nothing. But after experiencing the life in Lujiaba—farming, hunger, and cold—he knew exactly how useful 50,000 yuan was. He didn’t stand on ceremony; he accepted the money and sent a cute “Thank you” sticker.
Big Brother, love you!
About ten minutes later, just as he reached the classroom, a message came back:
Ask me for more when you’ve spent it. Study hard. Don’t fight.
Lu Yunchuan’s fingers flew across the screen:
I promise to study hard and not embarrass you!
Huo Yanxiu had already spotted him. Having not seen Lu Yunchuan for a while, he walked over and threw an arm around his shoulders, teasing: The great Young Master Fu has come to school? I thought you dropped out since you were gone so long.
Lu Yunchuan shook him off. Get lost. From now on, don’t call me for skipping class or fighting with Du Yunrui and the others. I’m going to study hard.
Du Yunrui, who was chatting with a group of friends, found this bizarre. He poked his head out: Brother Chuan, you can’t be like this. Even though we all know about the ‘fake heir’ thing, we still love you. If you start studying, who’s going to cover for us?
Lu Yunchuan kicked the classroom door open and pointed a warning finger: If I catch you fighting again, I’ll skin you. If you fail your finals, don’t come looking for me.
Huo Yanxiu, his desk mate, was grinning ear to ear. Such an imposing Young Master Fu. There are only 27 days left until the Gaokao; what ‘finals’ are you talking about? Give it a rest.
Lu Yunchuan deflated. True. But I’ve decided to repeat the year. Next year, I’ll be a star student at the Aviation University. Don’t bother me, I’m studying.
Everyone thought he was just talking. He had said he’d “study hard” more than once before, and it was always hot air. But this time was different. While Huo Yanxiu had his head down reading some extracurricular book, Lu Yunchuan sat upright, listening intently to the teacher explaining the test papers. He actually looked the part.
The news that Lu Yunchuan wasn’t the biological son of the Fu family had spread quickly through the campus. Everyone viewed him as a joke, but he didn’t care. He was determined to rise above it all and make them stare in shock.
Predictably, Fu Lingchuan would also be in his senior year next year. For the sake of Fu Lingchuan’s education, Fu Kaijiang had donated a building to the school, pre-booking a spot. Lu Yunchuan was a science student; if he didn’t reach a certain score and had no one to pay for a “back door” entry, there was little hope for him to repeat the year there. If the spots were full, the school would reject him. So, even if he couldn’t get a great score this year, he had to work hard enough to earn a spot to repeat.
Lu Yunchuan had changed. He no longer skipped class to fight. He could actually stay in his seat. The homeroom teacher, Liu Yifei, was very pleased and singled him out for praise during the class meeting.
The student with the best performance today was Fu Yunchuan. He is no longer the ‘black sheep’ leading the class in breaking discipline. He spent the whole day quiet and focused. Let’s give him a round of applause.
The whole class burst into laughter. Huo Yanxiu couldn’t help but spit out a mouthful of water onto the desk.
Lu Yunchuan:
It seems my reputation really was terrible. Reborn with a ruined reputation… cleaning up my image is going to be a long and difficult road.
However, he felt exceptionally fulfilled that day. The perk of an elite school was that evening self-study was optional. Lu Yunchuan never stayed for it. After school, he planned to hail a taxi, but as soon as he stepped out, he saw his brother’s car parked by the greenery. He checked his phone; Big Brother had indeed sent a message.
I’ll pick you up after work. At the school gate.
A warm feeling spread through Lu Yunchuan’s chest. He said goodbye to Huo Yanxiu and the others and went to find his brother.
Big Brother is probably afraid I’ll get kicked out.
If this were the Lu Yunchuan of the previous life, he would have walked away without looking back. Or, if the Fu family didn’t have Big Brother, he wouldn’t have stayed. But for Big Brother, he would remain.
He skillfully opened the car door and sat in the passenger seat. Fastening his seatbelt, he asked with a smile, You’re off work so early?
Big Brother just hummed in response, saying nothing more. Once he saw Lu Yunchuan was buckled in, he started the car. All the way home, Lu Yunchuan chattered incessantly about school. When he reached a funny part, Big Brother would let out a soft chuckle.
His voice was deep, with a low-frequency resonance. It was rare for Lu Yunchuan to hear him laugh; he rarely saw a smile on his brother’s face at the Fu house.
Lu Yunchuan mused, Brother, you should laugh more. You look good when you smile, and your voice is nice.
Fu Xici didn’t answer. The brothers arrived home “chatting and laughing. The rest of the family was having dinner in the dining room. But Fu Xici and Lu Yunchuan went straight to the kitchen. Lu Yunchuan naturally carried the food the nanny had left for them back to their room.
The rest of the Fu family found the pair extremely strange. Especially Lu Yunchuan—the family had treated him like that, yet he wasn’t arguing or throwing a fit. He didn’t seem to feel the slightest bit of grievance from living under someone else’s roof.
And then there was Fu Xici’s attitude. They had never seen such a sharp, stern expression on his face before. With Fu Xici protecting him, the family would have to think twice if they wanted to kick Lu Yunchuan out.
Jiang Wanyue was confused: What’s wrong with the eldest?
Fu Kaijiang didn’t understand either: He never cared about anything in this house, yet at this critical moment, he’s meddling in the second son’s business.
Fu Lingchuan felt a sense of crisis: Dad, Mom, is that Big Brother? He doesn’t seem to like me… did I do something to upset him? I didn’t want to disrupt this family, but you’re my biological parents, I couldn’t bear to stay away.
Seeing his eyes turn red again, Jiang Wanyue and Fu Kaijiang hurried to comfort him: “No, no. Your big brother injured his brain when he was a teenager. He’s a bit of a fool and can’t tell family from outsiders. Don’t take it to heart.”
Fu Lingchuan lowered his head, biting his lip: But he’s very protective of Second Brother. He doesn’t seem foolish at all…
In Fu Xici’s room, Lu Yunchuan finished his meal in a few bites and went to shower. Fu Xici ate slowly and little. After returning the dishes to the kitchen, he came back and went to hang up Lu Yunchuan’s bag. Suddenly, a book fell out.
The cover showed two animated men embracing.
Curious, he opened it. The image on the first page hit his retinas like a lightning bolt: a man with his hands bound by silver handcuffs, mouth open, being licked by another man, saliva dripping from the corner of his mouth onto his collarbone. He was wearing black leather clothes. Or rather, he might as well have been wearing nothing.
The image was scandalous. Fu Xici knew exactly what it was with just one glance. He snapped it shut and put it back in the bag, his mind reeling. He clearly hadn’t expected Lu Yunchuan to read such things.
His heart raced, and his ears turned red as he hung the bag up.
Lu Yunchuan came out after his shower and said, The water is still hot, Brother, go ahead and wash. I’m going to work on some practice problems.
While Fu Xici was rummaging through the closet, Lu Yunchuan, with his hair still wet, grabbed his bag to take out a mock exam paper. Instead, his hand brushed against a book that didn’t belong to him.
He pulled it out, and his brain went numb. He immediately grabbed his phone to message Huo Yanxiu.
What the f*ck are you doing putting your filth in my bag? You dead gay, are men and women not enough for you that you’re reading BL now? Believe me, I’ll report you!
Huo Yanxiu replied quickly: I didn’t dare take it home. You know my mom checks my bag every day. I didn’t dare leave it at school either; I’d be dead if a teacher caught me. Just keep it for me for now.
Huo Yanxiu, you’re finished. Why are you reading this? Do you want to be poked or something?
No, actually I’m bisexual. But if I like men, I’m definitely a 1 (top).
Chengdu welcomes you. Just go.
Not going. Those 0s (bottoms) are boring. I like straight guys.
A-Chuan, same-sex marriage laws passed long ago. You can’t discriminate against me. I think I like men better than women.
What does that have to do with me? I don’t like men.
I do. Especially the wild, arrogant type.
Don’t go into heat on me. I’m burning that trash. If my brother finds it, I won’t be able to explain myself.
Don’t! I haven’t finished it yet! It was hard to get. If you burn it, it’s gone. You should read it too, it’s interesting.
You’re too much. I have no interest. Gotta go, doing problems.
In his previous life, he really hadn’t noticed Huo Yanxiu had this hobby. Lu Yunchuan disgustedly stuffed the book back into the bag and took out his mock exam.
Half an hour later, Big Brother came out of the shower. Seeing Lu Yunchuan studying, he didn’t disturb him and picked up a book to read nearby. Lu Yunchuan told him to rest early, saying he’d sleep after finishing the problems.
He ended up studying half the night. By the time Fu Xici woke up from a light sleep, the lights were still on. It was past 1:00 AM. Lu Yunchuan had fallen asleep slumped over the computer desk.
Fu Xici got out of bed slowly to wake him. He noticed Lu Yunchuan’s body was shivering. He patted his back a couple of times. Lu Yunchuan woke up with a start, turning to look at Fu Xici with a face covered in tears.
For a moment, he couldn’t tell if it was a dream or reality. He stared at Fu Xici’s face for a few seconds, then stood up and hugged him tightly, his voice full of sorrow.
“Brother, you’re my only family left. Don’t leave me. Don’t die.”
Fu Xici stood frozen for a moment before slowly resting his large hand on Lu Yunchuan’s back. He struggled to utter two words: “Go… sleep.”
Lu Yunchuan held him for a long time before recovering. He had dreamed of Fu Xici again—holding his urn, lying in the cold cemetery.
Once he regained his senses, he let out a long breath and released his brother. He packed his papers away and finally went to bed. As soon as Fu Xici turned off the lights, Lu Yunchuan snuggled over.
Though he was grown, seeing his brother by his side made his heart feel less panicked and painful. He curled into Fu Xici’s arms, pulling his brother’s arms over him and burying his face in his chest. “Brother, hold me.”
Fu Xici’s chin brushed against his soft hair as his arms tightened. He thought of the book in Lu Yunchuan’s bag.
A surge of emotion hit him. In the darkness, he licked his lips, and a sudden, indescribable heat rose in his heart. This heat traveled from his chest, through his blood, and gathered at a certain point below his abdomen.
Lu Yunchuan was still nuzzling restlessly against his chest, trying to find a comfortable sleeping position. He wrapped his long legs around his brother’s waist. He had no ulterior motives; he just felt it was wonderful to sleep holding his brother.
This time, it wasn’t an urn, but a whole person lying on this bed with him.
He was still feeling grateful when he suddenly felt something pressing against his thigh. Something rock hard.
Lu Yunchuan: ???
