Chapter 11: The Punishment Boldly prying open his teeth.
Lu Yunchuan felt he had performed quite well. After the exam, he went to compare answers with the top student in his class, Qian Shuhao, and discovered that many of their answers matched.
Qian Shuhao was the quintessential “nerd” with glasses. In a school dominated by rich heirs, he had carved out a path through sheer academic brilliance. In this aristocratic high school teeming with “second-generation rich,” he was the only one predicted to make it into the prestigious B-University. His family was comfortable—not “Fu-family-rich” or “Huo-family-rich,” but better off than most middle-class households.
Qian Shuhao usually spent every waking hour studying, and students like him generally looked down on playboys like Lu Yunchuan. In his previous life, Lu Yunchuan hadn’t cared; as the most arrogant “bad boy” of the academy, he never felt that poor grades were something to be ashamed of.
But things were different now. As a “fake young master” on the verge of being cast out, if he lost his financial backing and didn’t even have grades or a dream to fall back on, he would truly be wasting his second chance at life.
He had turned over a new leaf. While others were indifferent to their results, he dragged Qian Shuhao to a nearby cafe to check answers.
Qian Shuhao adjusted his glasses nervously, looking a bit intimidated. Lu Yunchuan ordered him a cappuccino and said with a smile, “Don’t be nervous. I just want to cross-reference our answers. I know for sure you’re getting into B-University.”
Qian Shuhao didn’t dare look him in the eye. He lowered his head and stuttered, “I… I don’t know if mine are right either.”
Lu Yunchuan wrote down what he remembered of his answers. Qian Shuhao took the paper, and after just a glance, he said, “You got about two-thirds right.”
Lu Yunchuan’s eyes lit up. “Really? What score do you think I’ll get?”
He kept poor Qian Shuhao trapped in the cafe all afternoon, forcing the honor student to cross-check every detail. Finally, Qian Shuhao gave him an estimate: “I think you’ll get around 400 points. If you’re lucky, you might even cross the Second-Tier university line.”
Lu Yunchuan laughed heartily, feeling a sense of fulfillment. When he finally let the boy go, it was already dark. Before leaving, he packed a few cups of coffee for Qian Shuhao. “Take these home to your parents. Thanks for sticking around with me.”
Qian Shuhao was hesitant to accept. Lu Yunchuan had been a notorious scoundrel at school—unskilled, unlearned, and wealthy. Yet, in the month before the Gaokao, he had completely changed.
When Qian Shuhao tried to refuse, Lu Yunchuan’s face darkened. “Do you look down on me?”
Qian Shuhao immediately shook his head. “No! Everyone saw your progress this semester. You’re very smart. I don’t look down on you at all.”
Lu Yunchuan shoved the coffee into his hands. “If you don’t look down on me, then take it. When we’re in college, I’ll treat you again.”
He waved goodbye and walked away. Qian Shuhao stood there, watching the boy’s silhouette disappear into the sunset, feeling a sense of unreality. Was that really the arrogant Fu Yunchuan? He didn’t seem like the person who used to despise “good students” anymore.
That evening, Lu Yunchuan invited Huo Yanxiu out to celebrate—a final hurrah before their paths diverged. He sent a WeChat message to Fu Xici, telling him he’d be late and not to wait up.
Fu Xici instructed him not to drink and to be back by nine, or his parents would have something to say. Lu Yunchuan acknowledged the message.
Huo Yanxiu had booked a private room. Around 7:00 PM, everyone arrived. Having avoided “messing around” for a month for the sake of his studies, Lu Yunchuan felt incredibly relaxed now that the exams were over.
Sitting on the booth sofa with a cigarette between his fingers, Lu Yunchuan shouted louder than anyone: “Whoever leaves early tonight is a grandson!”
Du Yunrui was howling into the microphone, singing Eason Chan’s Ten Years: “Ten years later, you won’t know me, I won’t belong to you…”
Lu Yunchuan looked at him with disdain. “Why sing Ten Years? Sing Friends!”
Du Yunrui quickly switched the track to Emil Chau’s Friends. “Brother Chuan, want to join?”
Lu Yunchuan didn’t hesitate. He grabbed another mic. “I’ll sing. It’s not like your brother is tone-deaf.”
The scene turned chaotic as everyone joined in, but it felt authentic. Seeing these vibrant faces, Lu Yunchuan felt a prickle of heat in his eyes. For the first time, he felt that being alive like this was wonderful. God knew how much he had missed being around this group of “inhumane” young masters.
Huo Yanxiu didn’t participate. He just sat there watching Lu Yunchuan, a slight smirk playing on his lips.
As the singing died down, the drinking began. Cases of beer arrived one after another. Lu Yunchuan was getting high on the alcohol, while Huo Yanxiu hadn’t touched a drop since he was the designated driver.
The group started playing Truth or Dare. When it was Du Yunrui’s turn, he chose “Dare.” They told him to text “I like you” to his crush.
He turned bright red and tried to back out. “That’s not great, she has a boyfriend.” He ended up choosing “Truth,” but still couldn’t bring himself to name her, so he penalized himself with three drinks and promptly passed out.
The bottle spun again and pointed at Lu Yunchuan. He chose “Truth.” The crowd got excited. “Do you have someone you like? When was your first kiss?”
Lu Yunchuan answered shamelessly: “No one I like, and my first kiss is still intact. Cry about it! Hahaha!”
Huo Yanxiu watched him laugh. Lu Yunchuan was clearly tipsy; his cheekbones were flushed red, making his whole face look vivid and striking.
After many rounds, it was finally Huo Yanxiu’s turn. He chose “Dare.” Du Yunrui, having regained some consciousness, pointed at Lu Yunchuan. “Xiu, if we want to see you and Brother Chuan French kiss, would you do it?”
Huo Yanxiu’s smirk deepened. “I don’t mind. It’s up to your Brother Chuan.”
Lu Yunchuan spat, “Damn it, Rui, do you think I’m a character in some Japanese adult film? That’s disgusting!”
“Xiu-ge chose Dare, and you’re not following the rules,” Du Yunrui countered.
Lu Yunchuan waved him off. “Anything but that. If you found me a pretty girl, I wouldn’t refuse, right?”
Huo Yanxiu stood up and sat next to Lu Yunchuan. “What’s the big deal about a kiss? We’re close enough to wear the same pair of pants. What’s a kiss between friends?”
Lu Yunchuan pushed him away. “You’re up to no good. Don’t think I don’t know you’ve gone ‘bent’ (gay).”
Huo Yanxiu didn’t deny it. “So what if I am? Being gay isn’t a crime.”
“I can keep treating you as a brother as long as you don’t target me,” Lu Yunchuan said firmly. “I don’t care if you’re as bent as a mosquito coil.”
Huo Yanxiu: “…”
Realizing that path was blocked, Huo Yanxiu switched to “Truth.” When asked who he had liked, his eyes remained glued to Lu Yunchuan with a meaningful, silent smile.
The group caught on immediately. “Xiu-ge likes Chuan-ge? Holy crap! If you two actually got together, who would be on top?”
Lu Yunchuan was tired of the vulgar topic. “Stop it. Even if I were gay, I’d definitely be on top. Huo Yanxiu can’t beat me in a fight.”
By 9:00 PM, Lu Yunchuan was heavily intoxicated and slipping into a blackout. His phone rang it was Fu Xici.
He fumbled for the phone, his speech slurred. “Hello… Brother… I’m coming back now…”
Fu Xici’s voice sounded angry when he heard the drunken tone. “Downstairs.”
“What downstairs?” Lu Yunchuan asked. Ten seconds later, his brother replied: “I’m here.”
Lu Yunchuan sobered up slightly. “You’re downstairs? You came to pick me up?”
After an affirmative grunt from Fu Xici, Lu Yunchuan bid everyone goodbye. “My brother’s here. I have to go or I’ll be in trouble. Let’s hang out another time.”
As he stood, Huo Yanxiu grabbed him and handed him a set of keys. “I didn’t give you a gift on your birthday. This is for you. When you’re sober tomorrow, I’ll take you to see the apartment.”
Lu Yunchuan’s brain was foggy. He took the keys and thanked him. “Okay, okay… see you tomorrow.”
Huo Yanxiu helped him downstairs. Outside the bar, Fu Xici’s tall silhouette stood under a streetlight. Huo Yanxiu handed the boy over, politely greeting him as “Fu-family Big Brother.”
Fu Xici caught Lu Yunchuan as the boy practically collapsed into his arms. With a polite nod to Huo Yanxiu, he helped Lu Yunchuan into the back seat and laid him down before thanking the other man with a single word: “Thanks.”
Huo Yanxiu watched them drive away, feeling a sudden sense of loss.
Afraid their parents would see the drunken state and scold the boy, Fu Xici took a side entrance back to the room. He laid Lu Yunchuan on the sofa and shook him a few times. “…Chuan.”
Lu Yunchuan didn’t wake up. Fu Xici sighed, a heavy feeling in his chest. The sight of the boy getting drunk alone with others sparked a nameless anger. He stood by the sofa, checking Lu Yunchuan’s body for any marks. Relieved to find none, he moved to pick him up for a bath.
Suddenly, Lu Yunchuan’s long arms wrapped around his neck. The boy opened his eyes briefly, saw it was Fu Xici, and closed them again, murmuring, “Why is it… Big Brother…”
The arms around his neck went limp.
Fu Xici’s lips thinned as he stared at the boy’s flushed face. His gaze moved from the closed eyes down to the lips, waiting to hear what else he would say.
A moment later, Lu Yunchuan mumbled again: “No… can’t kiss Big Brother… it’s not allowed… change to someone else…”
Fu Xici’s expression stiffened. He stared at those lips, reddened by alcohol. Why can’t you kiss me? he thought. What did they play at that party? Who did Lu Yunchuan kiss? Huo Yanxiu?
The thought caused a sharp pang in his chest. The “Big Brother” of the Fu family, who had intended to take him to the bath, fell silent for a moment before pressing his mouth onto those moving lips.
He cupped Lu Yunchuan’s cheek with one hand, greedily drinking in the jelly-like softness. Seeing that Lu Yunchuan only let out a small hum and didn’t open his eyes, he grew bolder, using his tongue to pry open Lu Yunchuan’s tightly closed teeth.
This was a punishment to see if he’d ever dare get drunk outside again!
