Chapter 4: The Wedding Night
The wedding chamber, adorned with festive “Double Happiness” characters, was currently filled with an indescribable, suffocating awkwardness.
Chi Luoyao, her head tilted, stared at Jiang Ningzhi with a neutral expression, while Jiang Ningzhi looked like a fully ripened tomato.
“I… I am naturally capable… no, I mean, I want to… also no…”
Jiang Ningzhi lowered her head in defeat. Fine, in her current state, she really wasn’t “capable.” She had taken the medicine Physician Yang prescribed; her usually ice-cold body was warm and heated, and her physical strength shouldn’t be a major issue.
“It’s just…” Jiang Ningzhi looked up at Chi Luoyao, her gaze wandering everywhere but the exquisite face in front of her.
Seeing her stammering, Chi Luoyao decided to give her a hand. “Just what? Your Highness can speak plainly.”
“I… I have never… never shared a room with anyone. I don’t know how yet,” Jiang Ningzhi murmured, her head dropping in shame, turning a deep shade of crimson.
She missed the flash of surprise and amusement in Chi Luoyao’s eyes.
“Is it possible that before our marriage, Your Highness never had other Kunze?” Chi Luoyao had investigated this person thoroughly before the wedding, but seeing her like this, she felt a sudden urge to tease her.
How would Jiang Ningzhi know if the original owner had other Kunze? But given her body, which struggled just to walk a few steps, she likely didn’t. So, she simply gave a soft “Mhm.”
“I’ve heard that the first time for a Kunze is inevitably painful. I’m worried I won’t be skilled and might hurt you.” Now that she had already embarrassed herself, Jiang Ningzhi figured a little more wouldn’t hurt. Her speech became smoother, and her back straightened.
Chi Luoyao found the sudden “broken jar” attitude hilarious. “Did no governess teach Your Highness? Has Your Highness never looked at the instructional manuals?”
“No. Perhaps because my body is so frail, everyone forgot.”
On their wedding night, this newlywed couple sat upright on the bed discussing such private topics. Jiang Ningzhi wondered if other couples were like them. There was certainly no “love” between two people who had just met, yet they were sitting together discussing things only the most intimate of partners do.
“But if we do not consummate the marriage today, not only Your Highness but I too will become the laughingstock of the capital tomorrow.” Chi Luoyao couldn’t resist testing her. Was this person truly pure of heart, or…?
“Ah?” Jiang Ningzhi nearly jumped. “I didn’t think it through. Then… then we…”
If a Qianyuan and a Kunze lay in bed on their wedding night and nothing happened, Jiang Ningzhi would be ridiculed as an incompetent Qianyuan, and Chi Luoyao would be mocked for marrying her. How could she let that happen? Before becoming her wife, Chi Luoyao was the pride of the capital. If she became a target of slander because of Jiang Ningzhi, she would never forgive herself.
Chi Luoyao suddenly leaned close to Jiang Ningzhi’s ear. “What shall we do? Consummate it?”
“I… I mean, we can… we can do a temporary marking.”
The distance was too close. Chi Luoyao’s warm breath puffed against her sensitive earlobe, and Jiang Ningzhi was too nervous to even breathe. In this world, a Qianyuan can only permanently mark one Kunze in their lifetime, but during a heat or a rainy period, they can use a temporary marking to alleviate the symptoms by injecting their scent into the Kunze’s gland.
“So, does Your Highness know how to mark?” Chi Luoyao leaned in even closer.
Jiang Ningzhi propped her hands behind her, trying to back away. In her haste, her hand slipped off the edge of the bed. Losing her support, she fell backward. Chi Luoyao, who was already leaning in, lost her balance as well and tumbled forward onto Jiang Ningzhi.
“Careful!” “Ugh—”
Jiang Ningzhi ignored her own awkward fall and reached up to catch Chi Luoyao so she wouldn’t roll off the bed. But as one fell down and the other reached up, their lips met with a “thud.”
Jiang Ningzhi first felt a sharp pain, followed by a soft, moist sensation. It was like sweet cotton candy. Instinctively, she let her tongue dart out for a light lick.
So sweet! Like White Rabbit Cream Candy!
Chi Luoyao was initially stunned by the accidental kiss, but then she felt something soft, wet, and agile glide across her lips.
“You!” Chi Luoyao angrily pushed away the dazed Jiang Ningzhi. This person… how could she be so bold! “Scoundrel! Shameless!”
The shaming snapped Jiang Ningzhi’s soul back. she scrambled up, stuttering apologies: “I’m sorry! I didn’t mean to! I don’t know why I suddenly… mmm!”
“Shut up!” Chi Luoyao covered Jiang Ningzhi’s mouth to stop her from talking.
To her shock, Jiang Ningzhi’s tongue darted out again, swiping across her palm like a kitten’s wet paw. Chi Luoyao turned red and pulled her hand back, clenching it as if she could still feel the sensation. “You! Your Highness said you’ve never had a Kunze, yet you are so practiced!”
“I haven’t! I really haven’t! I usually don’t even spend time with Kunze!” Jiang Ningzhi sat up and raised her hand to the heavens. “I truly haven’t done anything inappropriate with any Kunze. If I lie, let Heaven strike me down with five bolts of lightning!”
“Your Highness! Don’t talk nonsense!” Chi Luoyao glared at her.
Jiang Ningzhi sat back like a scolded puppy, tugging at Chi Luoyao’s hem with watery “puppy eyes.” “Luoyao, don’t be mad at me, okay? I didn’t mean it. You just smell so good, I couldn’t help myself…”
Chi Luoyao got even angrier and threw the “puppy paw” aside. “How can Your Highness easily say a Kunze smells good… do you know that is no different from asking for sex!”
She had thought this person was a block of wood, but now she realized she was just completely socially inept. Yet, this made her believe that Jiang Ningzhi truly hadn’t spent time with Kunze—no proper Qianyuan would be so reckless with their words.
“I wasn’t asking for sex, I just truly think Luoyao smells wonderful.” Jiang Ningzhi curled into a corner of the bed, wanting to get close but afraid of making her angrier. “Besides, I haven’t said it to anyone else. I only told you. Telling my wife shouldn’t be considered frivolous.” She nodded to herself. “Right. Telling my own Consort is just a simple compliment.”
“You! Not another word!” Chi Luoyao was speechless.
“Okay, okay! I won’t say it. Don’t be mad, Luoyao.” Jiang Ningzhi had never been in a relationship, so she hadn’t realized she was destined to be a “wife-obsessed” person. Whatever her wife said was law.
Chi Luoyao saw her shrinking into the corner like a “good baby,” even offering a fawning smile when she looked over. She felt helpless but also a bit of sweetness. This Princess didn’t look like a Qianyuan at all; she looked more like a soft, pampered little Kunze.
Chi Luoyao stood up and began removing her phoenix crown at the dressing table. Ignoring the dazed stare from the bed, she removed her ornaments and let down her ink-black hair. Even with her stoic personality, she couldn’t help but sigh in relief at being free from the heavy wedding gear.
“Does Your Highness intend to sleep in your wedding robes?” she asked, glancing sideways at the Princess who was still twiddling her thumbs in the corner.
Jiang Ningzhi scrambled out of bed like a student caught daydreaming. “Right, right! I’ll take them off now!”
While undressing, Jiang Ningzhi kept catching glimpses of Chi Luoyao removing her outer layers. Once she saw her down to her inner robe, Jiang Ningzhi quickly looked away, chanting “see no evil” in her mind.
When she climbed back into bed, Chi Luoyao was already tucked under the covers, leaving a large space for her on the outside.
“Should I go blow out the candles?” Jiang Ningzhi asked, preparing to get up. “No,” Chi Luoyao said, grabbing Jiang Ningzhi’s sleeve. “On the wedding night, the auspicious candles must burn until dawn.”
“Oh.” Jiang Ningzhi lay down and pulled up the covers. Turning her head to look at Chi Luoyao, she finally felt the reality of being married. From now on, they were one. Whether they could love each other until their hair turned white was unknown, but she vowed to protect and cherish her for life.
Suddenly, she felt a light kick against her calf. “Hmm? What is it?” Jiang Ningzhi turned to face her.
Chi Luoyao buried her face in the quilt, her voice muffled. “Didn’t we say we were doing a temporary marking? Why hasn’t Your Highness started yet?”
“Er… I forgot for a second. I’m coming.”
Jiang Ningzhi hovered over Chi Luoyao. Though the Princess was a Kunze, she had never been this intimate with a Qianyuan. She shyly turned her head, exposing the scent gland on the back of her neck, her ear tips turning red with nerves.
Jiang Ningzhi buried her face in the crook of Chi Luoyao’s neck, her warm breath hitting the gland.
“Mmm…” Chi Luoyao let out a short, muffled groan. The gland was the most sensitive spot. Jiang Ningzhi’s dawdling was torture. She kicked her again and whispered, “Hurry up.”
“Okay~ here I go.”
As she spoke, Jiang Ningzhi’s soft lips pressed against the gland. Chi Luoyao whimpered as a cold, elegant Plum Blossom scent began to intensify. Just as the scent threatened to fill the room, a strong Green Tea scent with a hint of minty coolness aggressively broke through. It wrapped around the fragile plum fragrance, intertwining until the two were inseparable.
