The Tragic Heroine Fell in Love with Me - Chapter 6
“Lü Yu, you’re here. Oh, your roommate came too?” The guitar club president looked shyly at Xiao San, his hands fidgeting nervously.
The reason Lü Yu had been so insistent on bringing Xiao San to the club was because the president, Du Yitong, had a crush on Xiao San, while Lü Yu herself liked Du Yitong.
Xiao San didn’t like Du Yitong.
She had made this perfectly clear to Lü Yu before.
Though Du Yitong liked Xiao San, he had never confessed his feelings and rarely interfered with her daily life. Even though Xiao San was aware of his feelings, she found it difficult to outright reject him.
“I like Du Yitong, and since you don’t, just be my wingwoman. He always asks me about you anyway, so I can casually drop some hints and use the chance to talk more with him.” Lü Yu held Xiao San’s hand without any hesitation, pleading for her help in pursuing Du Yitong.
Xiao San had always been weak against pretty girls, and before she knew it, she had agreed to Lü Yu’s request and joined the guitar club with her.
“When are you going to confess to your crush? Every time he looks at me, it gives me the creeps.” Xiao San leaned closer to Lü Yu and whispered, urging her to confess to Du Yitong soon so she wouldn’t have to keep being used as a tool.
She genuinely didn’t like playing the guitar, it always made her fingers ache.
“I can’t do that. He doesn’t like me; he likes you right now. If I confess, he’ll definitely run away immediately.”
“Seriously? You really think he likes me? He never talks to me for more than two sentences before going to find you. He seems perfectly normal when he’s with you.” Xiao San glanced over briefly, and Du Yitong immediately straightened his posture, making her feel exhausted just watching him.
Lü Yu beamed with infatuation. “I love how silly he acts. Don’t you think he’s kind of adorable like this?”
“I really don’t understand your approach to romance,” Xiao San said, looking utterly confused.
It reminded her of when she had read about the relationship between Shen Lin and Zheng Qi in that novel, she didn’t get it then, and she couldn’t bring herself to root for it either.
It had been three years since she merged with the world of that novel, and now Xiao San was in the second semester of her sophomore year.
When the male lead wasn’t around, this world felt pretty normal so normal that it seemed as if she had just woken up from a long dream and returned to being an ordinary college student.
Her days were simple and fulfilling, revolving around part-time work and classes.
Aside from being the mascot for Lü Yu and Du Yitong’s budding romance, there was nothing particularly unusual about her life.
“Did you hear? Our university actually has an exchange program with a famous foreign school. A few exchange students are coming!” Xiao San overheard some club members discussing the exchange students and couldn’t help but perk up her ears to listen.
“You heard about it too? It’s with Bridge University! Their graduates are all elites in various fields. As soon as they graduate, they either become CEOs of listed companies or inherit them. I have no idea what our school did to attract them.”
“Haha, you don’t know the inside story. I have some insider info want to hear it?”
“Yes, tell me!” Xiao San’s eyes lit up, and she couldn’t help but exclaim.
The two students gossiping turned their heads, and when they saw it was Xiao San, their faces immediately flushed. They stammered, “Goddess, you want to know too?”
“Goddess?” Xiao San looked at the two male classmates in confusion.
“Ah, I let it slip,” one of them quickly covered his mouth.
Lü Yu rolled her eyes at them. “San’er, don’t pay them any mind.”
Lü Yu leaned closer to Xiao San and whispered, “You’re actually ranked first on our school’s goddess list.”
“A goddess list? Our school actually has something like that?” Xiao San was even more surprised that she was ranked first. It felt unbelievable.
Xiao San had never imagined she would ever make it onto any goddess list. From elementary school through college, no one had ever told her she was that good-looking.
“Hey, you just don’t realize it,” Lü Yu said quietly. “Otherwise, why do you think Du Yitong has liked you for so long but never dared to confess? He only dares to talk to me. It’s because if he confessed to you, he’d become the enemy of the entire school.”
“Wow.”
“Hey, don’t look so shocked while gossiping about yourself,” Lü Yu shrugged helplessly. “Do you think I’m lying to you? I suggest you take a look in the mirror. If someone who looks like you isn’t a goddess, then there’s no justice in the world.”
“So, you only like me because I’m good-looking?” Xiao San leaned in close and blew softly into Lü Yu’s ear. “You shallow face-lover.”
Lü Yu shrank back and gave Xiao San a light push. “Enough already. I’m straight, totally straight. If you keep this up, be careful, or I’ll…”
“Turn for me?”
“Pfft, even though you’re good-looking, my heart still belongs to my silly Du Yitong.”
The two of them laughed playfully. Meanwhile, the boys who had wanted to share the gossip with the goddess trudged away dejectedly, their curiosity about the gossip completely gone.
But Xiao San was still curious about the matter. “Do you know what they were saying about that exchange student thing?”
Lü Yu replied, “I heard there’s some rich, handsome guy who likes someone at our school. Since it’s a long-distance thing, he specifically arranged this cooperation just for that girl.”
“Wow, so romantic,” Xiao San remarked without much emotion.
“Right? I think it’s romantic too. If someone did that for me, I’d marry him on the spot,” Lü Yu said, cupping her cheeks dreamily.
“Really? So, you don’t like your silly club president anymore? You’d switch loyalties just like that? I see through you!” Xiao San teased, pointing her chin toward Du Yitong in the distance.
Lü Yu snorted. “Haven’t you ever imagined it? A wealthy young master, going through all this trouble to become an exchange student at our school just for you, how romantic is that?”
“Romantic or not, don’t you think it’s a bit strange?”
“Strange?”
“Yeah, what does liking a girl have to do with being an exchange student? Besides, all the students going to Cambridge benefit from this, and the Cambridge students coming here get to experience a different lifestyle. But what does any of this have to do with that girl? What does she gain from it?”
Lü Yu thought for a moment and felt that made sense too. “But, maybe he’s considering the girl’s feelings, so she doesn’t feel too burdened.”
“That makes it even stranger,” Xiao San said. “If he didn’t want to burden the girl, he shouldn’t have let such rumors spread. Now that they’re out, who knows if even more outrageous ones will circulate when he comes to our school? Wouldn’t that put even more pressure on the girl?”
“That seems right.” Lü Yu’s romantic idealism began to sober up. “So, what do you think he should do instead?”
“I don’t know,” Xiao San shook her head. “I really don’t, but I feel like this approach is just off somehow.”
“Ugh, you’re such a killjoy. You’ve made something so romantic feel completely unromantic to me now,” Lü Yu pouted. “You always have to be so clear-headed at the worst times.”
“Alright, anyway, this has nothing to do with us. You should go check on your boyfriend his neck is about to break from craning over here.” While Xiao San and Lü Yu had been engrossed in their conversation, Du Yitong had been making faces at Lü Yu several times, but she was too lost in her romantic daydreams to notice.
Xiao San felt compelled to remind her.
Lü Yu gasped, “I’ll go talk to him and be right back.”
Xiao San waved her off, urging her to hurry.
As soon as the club activity ended, Xiao San rushed back to her dorm.
One reason she had asked for time off was that her dad was coming to her city today for work and could only spare time to have dinner with her in the evening.
When she arrived at the meeting spot, she immediately spotted the expensive car.
“Wow, Dad, you actually drove the Shen family’s car out? Aren’t you afraid of scratching it?” Xiao San didn’t know much about cars, but she could tell this one was pricey.
Her dad replied, “Of course! Your dad has some clout. Get in quickly, I’m taking you somewhere nice to eat.”
Xiao San cheerfully agreed and hopped into the passenger seat, bouncing a little. “It feels really comfortable. No wonder it’s a rich person’s car.”
“Let’s go. We’ll play rich for a day.”
Her dad looked smug as the car zipped through the streets, soon arriving at the hotel he had booked.
It was a luxurious place, complete with a doorman at the entrance. As soon as the car stopped, the valet came over to park it.
Her dad casually handed over the keys.
He offered his arm, and Xiao San giggled as she linked hers with his. “This place looks expensive. Is your secret stash enough? Don’t overspend and get in trouble with Mom.”
“Of course, it is. Your dad’s secret fund is more than enough,” he said proudly, chin held high, then lowered his voice. “But don’t tell your mom about my stash. Besides…” He chuckled. “We have a discount coupon from the young master. We can feast without spending a single cent.”
“The young master? Is Shen Lin here?”
“You didn’t know?” Her dad said mysteriously. “Recently, the young master’s school started an exchange student program. He got tired of staying abroad and signed up as an exchange student. He’ll be here for three or four months.”
Thinking of the gossip she had heard at school today, Xiao San couldn’t help but ask, “It’s not A University, is it?”
“Not sure,” Xiao’s father shook his head. “I’m just here to help the young master buy a house. You know he definitely wouldn’t be used to living in a school dormitory.”
Xiao San’s lips twitched involuntarily.
Truly the wealthy just coming as an exchange student, and they have to buy a house. The wretched capitalism.
But now, as a beneficiary of that capitalism, especially in such a five-star hotel, Xiao San found it hard to genuinely dislike Shen Lin.
“I’ll save the dislike for after this meal,” she thought to herself.
After having dinner with her father, it was already too late way past the school’s curfew.
“Don’t go back tonight. Let’s just get a hotel room together.”
“If Mom finds out you’re staying in a hotel with a young girl, she’ll definitely kill you,” Xiao San pouted, putting on a terrified expression.
