The Tragic Heroine Fell in Love with Me - Chapter 46
Xiao San seemed to have forgotten that the reason she wanted to cook was to apologize.
It wasn’t until the meal was ready that Xiao San realized something felt off, but when she met Zheng Qi’s smile, she forgot everything again.
Zheng Qi drove her to work as well. Xiao San hadn’t yet obtained her driver’s license, and now, with weekends dedicated to studying for the test, her already busy life became even more packed.
When people get busy, they tend to forget unimportant things completely.
For example, Huang Xi and Qi Yan two people who were utterly insignificant to her.
“I’m sorry, please forgive me.” Huang Xi bowed his head, speaking heavily in front of Xiao San.
It had only been a little over half a month since they last met, but Huang Xi’s complexion had turned ghastly. Standing before Xiao San, his back hunched as if weighed down by something on his shoulders.
His eyes were fixed straight ahead, but because he was bowing, from Xiao San’s perspective, he seemed filled with anger, as if he might explode at any moment.
It took Xiao San a moment to remember who Huang Xi was.
Although in the world of the novel, her father was the Shen family’s driver, Xiao San’s understanding of Shen Lin was actually limited to the descriptions in the book, let alone these two friends of his.
Clearly, Huang Xi and Qi Yan had some general knowledge of her, but they weren’t familiar with her.
Xiao San took two steps back and shifted to the side, positioning herself to Huang Xi’s right, at least not directly facing his bow.
“What are you up to now? I told you, I won’t write a letter of forgiveness.”
Xiao San thought Huang Xi had come to pressure her into writing a letter of forgiveness. She hadn’t paid much attention to the aftermath of Lin Nuanyan’s situation. If the police needed her testimony or anything, she’d be happy to help, but she wouldn’t actively concern herself with Lin Nuanyan’s circumstances.
Hearing Xiao San’s words, Huang Xi neither raised his head nor showed any intention of leaving.
Xiao San had no choice but to leave first. “Even if you do this, I won’t soften my heart.”
She quickly fled.
And so, she didn’t see the furious look in Huang Xi’s eyes after she left.
When she returned home, Zheng Qi had already prepared the meal and called her over to sit. “Why were you running so fast? You’re sweating on your forehead.”
Zheng Qi stepped forward, using her index finger to wipe away a drop of sweat from Xiao San’s forehead. She leaned in close, their breaths mingling. Under Xiao San’s dazed gaze, Zheng Qi pulled out a wet wipe from behind Xiao San.
“Quick, wipe it off.”
Zheng Qi held the wipe up in front of Xiao San.
Xiao San reached out to take it. As soon as Zheng Qi stepped away, Xiao San took a deep breath.
Zheng Qi’s skin was truly flawless smooth as milk, with fine, delicate hairs. When Zheng Qi leaned in, those tiny hairs seemed to have wings, lightly brushing against Xiao San’s skin.
Of course, they weren’t actual wings. Xiao San felt that Zheng Qi’s fine hairs must be able to speak or move, like soft little needles. Otherwise, why would Xiao San still feel the lingering warmth of Zheng Qi’s presence on her skin, even though they hadn’t actually touched?
Zheng Qi had phoenix eyes, their outer corners elongated and tinged with a faint red, reminiscent of the enchanting crimson seen in the fox spirits from television dramas.
That red seemed almost alive, shifting with every smile and frown of Zheng Qi, revealing a different kind of charm.
Xiao San felt she must be going mad. Otherwise, why would a mere moment stretch out in her perception, as if slowed down by hundreds of times?
Zheng Qi drew closer slowly, the allure sketched by those narrow eyes, the soft thorns gently waving in the air like wings, leaving traces of Zheng Qi’s warmth upon her.
“San’er, what are you thinking about?” Zheng Qi looked at her. The soft light from the ceiling cast a golden glow around her, as if she were bathed in radiance.
Xiao San quickly shook her head, feeling strange.
She hurried to the dining table and sat down, observing that Zheng Qi’s attire today seemed different from usual.
“Your dress is really beautiful,” Xiao San praised sincerely.
Zheng Qi was wearing a white knee-length dress, held up by two delicate straps over her shoulders. The fabric was soft and lustrous, complementing her pearl-like, glowing skin.
Zheng Qi wore only a silver necklace that spanned her collarbones, deep enough to “raise goldfish.” On her left collarbone, there was a red “X” tattooed at some point so vivid that Xiao San couldn’t tear her eyes away.
“Right? It’s a silk nightgown,” Zheng Qi said, completely oblivious to Xiao San’s dazed expression. She lifted the hem of the dress and placed it in Xiao San’s hand. “Feel it, isn’t the fabric incredibly comfortable?”
Xiao San’s hand was guided by Zheng Qi’s, and a piece of the fabric was pressed into her palm.
It was indeed silk.
Every touch of her fingers was met with a smooth, irresistible warmth.
Xiao San couldn’t recall how she managed to finish the meal.
By the time she returned to her room, Zheng Qi had already handed her a matching set of pajamas.
Ah, even though they were both girls, wasn’t it a bit inappropriate to wear such revealing sleepwear so casually?
Xiao San covered her face with her hands.
Was it because Zheng Qi had left Shen Lin that her charm seemed magnified infinitely? After all, the heroine of a tragic story often captivates others only after parting ways with the male lead.
What girl doesn’t appreciate a beautiful woman?
Who would be lucky enough to date Zheng Qi, she wondered.
“Snap out of it. The functional plan is out, and you need to complete it by the end of the month. Don’t just space out, if there are any issues with the plan, speak up early.”
Ji Junhong stood not far from Xiao San, waving his hands in front of her face a few times before she finally snapped back to reality.
Xiao San blushed deeply and quickly replied, “Okay, boss. But I have to take my driver’s license test before the end of the month, so…”
“Don’t worry, this function isn’t complicated. Use your brain a little, and even if you take half a month off, you’ll still finish it.”
Xiao San’s face grew even redder at Ji Junhong’s words.
She couldn’t help feeling as though she were being looked down upon.
But in reality, she wasn’t. Xiao San had worked with Ji Junhong for some time and knew he was just not very articulate in truth, he was a careful and gentle person.
“Okay, I’ll do my best to complete it well,” Xiao San said.
Ji Junhong was an exceptionally talented architect, and remarkably young at that. Rumor had it he had already won numerous awards during his student years, and it had cost the company leadership a fortune to bring him on board.
Most importantly, Ji Junhong was only twenty-six years old. Not only was he fully skilled in his profession, but he was also a fitness enthusiast with a well-defined eight-pack.
Xiao San had secretly inquired about him and learned that despite being handsome, excelling at his job, and coming from a wealthy family, Ji Junhong was still single.
Xiao San was quite intrigued.
But don’t misunderstand Xiao San was actually scouting for a new love interest for Zheng Qi.
After all, the best way to forget an old romance is to start a new one.
Although Zheng Qi acted as if she would never look back, Xiao San, having been through it herself years ago, knew better. Back then, she had thought the same way, only for Zheng Qi to confess right in front of her how desperately she loved Shen Lin.
Unless Zheng Qi started a new relationship, Xiao San would always remain skeptical.
Ji Junhong seemed like a pretty good candidate.
Since there was a company dinner that evening, Xiao San sent Zheng Qi a message saying she would be home late and had already eaten outside.
But when she got home, Zheng Qi was still waiting for her.
“Have you eaten?” Xiao San asked, noticing the food on the table.
Zheng Qi shook her head. “No, I had no appetite without you here.”
“Ah, didn’t I send you a message?” Xiao San felt a pang of guilt. She suddenly remembered that in the storyline, the female lead was supposed to suffer from stomach cancer for a while. Although she survived thanks to her protagonist halo, that didn’t mean one should neglect meals.
Xiao San reached out and touched the plates, they were cold.
“Come over and eat something. I’ll warm it up in the microwave. How could you just wait for me without eating?”
She quickly set her phone aside, heated the dishes, and brought them back to the table.
By then, Zheng Qi was already sitting obediently at the table, waiting.
It was rare to see Zheng Qi so docile.
Xiao San sat across from her and urged her to eat. “Next time I come home late, don’t wait for me. You have to eat on time and not make me worry, okay?”
Xiao San finally felt like she was back in her student days, interacting with Zheng Qi as she used to.
Lately, Zheng Qi’s all-around care had almost turned Xiao San into a helpless dependent.
Reflecting without much guilt, Xiao San thought she shouldn’t always let Zheng Qi take care of her she ought to reciprocate, especially since Zheng Qi might be at risk of stomach cancer. It was all the more important for Zheng Qi to eat regularly.
Zheng Qi hummed in agreement. “San’er is still the best.”
Xiao San picked up her phone and checked their chat history, only to find the message box empty. “I’m sorry, Ah Qi. I thought I sent you a message in my mind.”
Seeing no record of the message made Xiao San feel even guiltier.
If only she had told Zheng Qi earlier, Zheng Qi wouldn’t have had to wait so long.
“Next time I’m not back, you can call me. Don’t just wait around by yourself.”
“What if I disturb you while you’re busy with work?” Zheng Qi replied gently.
Ah.
Xiao San’s heart melted.
How could there be such an understanding and gentle female lead? “If I can’t come back in the future, I’ll always call you. Even if you don’t wait for me, I won’t be angry. What’s important is that you must take good care of yourself, Ah Qi.”
Zheng Qi ate his meal unhurriedly and, upon hearing Xiao San’s words, nodded very seriously.
From beginning to end, Zheng Qi’s gaze never left Xiao San.
