The Tragic Heroine Fell in Love with Me - Chapter 39
Brother Li’s heart was filled with disdain and venomous hatred toward women.
After waves of cheerful laughter echoed through the building, Brother Li said to his underlings, “Leave that woman aside for now. Let this one here get a taste of a man. Once she’s had a taste, she won’t dare talk to men like that again.”
Brother Li stared maliciously at Zheng Qi, his disgusting gaze roaming over her body as if he had already torn off her clothes.
Before the underlings could rush forward, Zheng Qi had already charged. She had just grabbed Brother Li’s arm when one of the underlings kicked her hard in the stomach, sending her stumbling back two steps.
Zheng Qi clutched her stomach, bending over as she glanced at Xiao San.
Brother Li tightened his grip on Xiao San, sticking out his tongue to lick her hair.
Zheng Qi gritted her teeth.
She thought back to the scene of being grabbed, shoved into a car, and sent abroad. She had once believed she would never return to the country, never see Xiao San again.
So she had poured all her energy into training, into sparring with others. Her progress in one year surpassed what others achieved in three.
But it was still far from enough.
Just this much was nowhere near sufficient.
Her eyes blazed with ferocity as she glared at these men.
The thugs approached with clubs. Zheng Qi seemed to have lost all sense of pain, blocking and striking with her hands. Step by step, she made her way to Brother Li, but she was already covered in wounds, looking as though she might collapse at any moment.
Why did I come here? Xiao San thought guiltily, digging her nails into her palm. Why had she followed Lin Nuanyan? Why had she distanced herself from Zheng Qi? What had she done?
If she had forgiven Zheng Qi without hesitation from the start, if she had confessed her worries about Lin Nuanyan to Zheng Qi, if only.
So many “ifs,” so many possibilities under which none of this would have happened.
Ah Qi!
Xiao San wanted to call out to Zheng Qi. Her fingers could move again. Turning her head, she saw the bald man’s disgusting face.
She watched as Zheng Qi was struck a few more times by the thugs, while the bald Brother Li wore a smug grin.
Xiao San had no special abilities.
She had always known she wasn’t particularly smart, that she struggled to learn anything and could only manage physical labor. If not for Zheng Qi, she wouldn’t have even passed the interviews for her two jobs. As for her so-called beauty, it was just a strange buff triggered by the merging of the novel world and the real world.
But even someone like her absolutely refused to become a burden to Zheng Qi.
Xiao San opened her mouth and bit down hard on the bald man’s ear.
Damn it, she cursed inwardly. From today on, your nickname is going to be One-Ear!
Just then, police suddenly burst in. There weren’t many, only four officers, followed at a distance by the taxi driver who had been watching from afar.
After the taxi driver had driven away, the more he thought about it, the more something felt off.
This place was in the middle of nowhere, who would come out here? That person driving such a nice car to such a desolate area didn’t seem like they were up to any good.
If it were in the city, it might be different someone could shout for help if something happened. But out here, who knew?
The girl he had just dropped off seemed a bit naive. What if she had been trafficked?
The taxi driver was a kind-hearted person, though not particularly brave.
So he drove to a hidden spot, parked, and decided to wait and see what would happen.
After waiting for a while, just as he was about to leave, he suddenly heard the sound of a scuffle coming from inside.
Just in case, the taxi driver dialed 110.
During this time, the taxi driver never left, afraid that something might really have happened inside. Several times he wanted to get closer, but he simply didn’t dare.
It wasn’t until a car suddenly roared past, a black sedan charging toward the unfinished building like it had a navigation system, that things escalated.
Only when the police rushed into the unfinished building did the taxi driver dare to peer inside from a distance through a crack in the door.
Several men who looked intimidating were holding three women captive.
The black car was parked in the lobby, completely wrecked from the collision. Of course, even more horrifying was the state of one of the girls beaten so badly she was almost unrecognizable.
The girl in the corner had been stripped of her clothes and was covering her private parts with her hands. A female police officer immediately stepped forward to drape a coat over her, though the girl’s eyes had a strange look, making her seem less than innocent.
The taxi driver didn’t dare look too closely and quickly shifted his gaze to his passenger.
That girl, she was so frightening that the taxi driver almost thought he’d mistaken her for someone else.
Her mouth was covered in blood, a gruesome sight. Then he glanced at the fierce-looking bald man being pinned down by the police his ear, oh dear.
The taxi driver couldn’t bear to look any longer. The ear was dangling by the side of his face; if the police had arrived any later, it would have been torn off entirely.
Oh my, this girl was truly formidable so fierce and strong.
Thinking of his own good-for-nothing son, the taxi driver couldn’t help but take another look at Xiao San. She probably wasn’t in a relationship, right? Maybe he could introduce her to his son.
The taxi driver’s thoughts began to wander into wild, unrealistic territory.
The police easily subdued the group of thugs.
Although the thugs were somewhat unruly, faced with the police, they had no choice but to surrender. They didn’t even seem to consider escaping.
The police handed clothes to Lin Nuanyan to cover herself.
Xiao San sat dazedly to the side, her gaze unfocused, completely unaware of the taxi driver’s enthusiastic waving.
By the time Xiao San could see clearly again, she was already back in the city center, sitting in the police station. She held a cup of hot water, a police jacket draped over her shoulders, and a female officer sat across from her, speaking to her gently.
“Xiao San, it’s okay, it’s all over now. Don’t worry, your friend is fine too. There’s no need to be anxious.”
Xiao San’s focus gradually returned, and she could hear the taxi driver’s voice.
“That’s right, I’ve been driving a taxi for over twenty years. I can tell what kind of person someone is at a glance. When this young lady was heading over there, I warned her not to go. See? Luckily, I was alert and called the police first, or else she would’ve been in real trouble.”
“Ah, it’s all about the unity between the police and the people. Is something like this really worth sending a commendation banner to our company? It’s nothing, really nothing is the banner the same kind you have hanging in your station?”
“Oh, that’s wonderful. As long as the young lady is safe, I’m at ease. Banners and such, I don’t really care about them.”
“Officer, is the young lady seeing anyone? I really like her personality. My son is twenty-three, very handsome, and our family has a house and a car. Could you ask her if she’d like to meet him?”
“Sigh! Isn’t that just how parents are? If there’s anyone suitable, let’s introduce them to each other. Ah, yes, yes, yes.”
Xiao San didn’t catch the rest of the conversation, as the female officer had already entered and closed the door. The soundproofing of the door was excellent, completely blocking out the noise from the lobby.
Xiao San took a deep breath. “Lin Nuoyan deliberately hired people to harm me. I want to sue her!”
The female officer let out a surprised “Ah.” Lin Nuoyan had been taken to the hospital because she had also been injured. The bald-headed men and others hadn’t identified Lin Nuoyan as the mastermind, so she was still being treated as a victim and protected. The officer couldn’t help but sigh and say, “I thought you two were friends. I heard from the taxi driver outside that you followed her because of your brother?”
“No,” Xiao San replied, knowing that the excuse she had given the taxi driver wouldn’t work with the police. “My friend is about to get engaged to Lin Nuoyan’s ex-boyfriend. Lin Nuoyan had been acting quite unstable before, so I followed her because I was afraid something might happen to her.”
At this point, Xiao San felt a bit guilty. The idea that Lin Nuoyan might do something drastic was something the police probably wouldn’t believe, so she felt uneasy about her own actions.
“What is your relationship with Lin Nuoyan?”
“We used to be friends. Later, she started dating Shen Lin, the one who’s now engaged to my friend and then she went abroad. We hadn’t seen each other for a long time until a few months ago when we met. At that time, she said she was going to marry Shen Lin.”
“Later, when Shen Lin was about to get engaged to my friend, I felt something was off, so I followed Lin Nuoyan, afraid she might do something foolish.”
The female officer asked, “So she encountered a scumbag?”
Xiao San responded with silence.
“What’s the situation?”
“It’s a love entanglement. The guy is engaged to Zheng Qi, and she was worried about Lin Nuoyan, so she followed her or maybe she was afraid Lin Nuoyan would disrupt Zheng Qi’s wedding. Sigh.” The female officer sighed. “That scumbag has hurt three girls at once.”
“Don’t just sigh. Do you know who the guy is?”
“Shen Lin?”
“Exactly. Shen Lin, the current chairman of the Shen Group.”
“Wow?” The female officer widened her eyes in surprise. “I never expected it to be a rich family secret!””
“But Zheng Qi and Xiao San are truly national best friends, willing to go to such lengths for each other.”
“That Zheng Qi is still lying in the hospital.”
“Those thugs are even worse off. Zheng Qi’s sanda skills are pretty good. They beat those thugs up so badly that one of them is still in the ICU. If it weren’t for the fact that there were so many of them, and Zheng Qi probably had a concussion from the collision, they might have been beaten to death.”
“Hey, that’s different,” one of them said gleefully. “Those guys deserved to get beaten up. Zheng Qi was justifiably defending herself and protecting her friend. If you ask me, it would’ve been better if those bastards were finished off.”
“Keep your voice down. If the higher-ups hear you, you’ll get scolded again. Think it in your heart, but don’t say it out loud.”
After gossiping for a while, everyone dispersed.
After all, such talk could only be shared privately. Whether they were victims or suspects, everyone had to be treated with basic human rights.
When Xiao San entered the hospital, she happened to see the thugs being treated in another ward, separated from Zheng Qi by just a single wall.
“Is Ah Qi awake yet?” Xiao San pushed the door open and entered. Li Ailun was scrolling through his phone nearby, his furrowed brows looking as if they could crush dozens of flies.
His phone was nearly overwhelmed with calls, with people constantly inquiring about Zheng Qi’s current condition.
“You’re here, great, great. You take over. I’m heading outside to make some calls. These people it’s just a fight, and they’re making such a big deal out of it. With so little brainpower, they still want to climb the ranks? It’s laughable.”
As he spoke, Li Ailun stepped aside to let Xiao San in, then opened the door and walked out, turning back to close it securely behind him.
