The Tragic Heroine Fell in Love with Me - Chapter 36
Lin Nuanyan was wounded by Shen Lin’s gaze.
She dreaded the thought of Shen Lin voicing those already palpable words.
“Ah!”
“Ah!”
“Ah!”
She could only scream like this.
“Stop making a scene. As long as you don’t cause trouble, this house, these bags, whatever you want, I’ll give it to you. Just stop making a scene.”
“You’ll regret this! You’ll regret it!” Lin Nuanyan pointed at Shen Lin, the whites of her eyes bloodshot. Madness had seized her mind; at that moment, she even wanted to kill Shen Lin. If Shen Lin were dead, he would belong to her alone.
Shen Lin saw Lin Nuanyan’s madness but paid it no mind.
He said lightly, “Calm down. Don’t look for me for the next two months.”
Because in two months, Shen Lin was set to marry Zheng Qi.
Lin Nuanyan gritted her teeth so hard they nearly shattered. She laughed hysterically, descending further into madness.
“Bang!”
The door slammed shut heavily. Lin Nuanyan knew clearly that he would not return.
She ought to act magnanimously after all, she had long been aware of the gap between them.
But why should she?
Lin Nuanyan wiped away her tears. She had never been one to endure humiliation meekly. Since Shen Lin had treated her this way, he shouldn’t blame her for what came next.
Lin Nuanyan let out a cold laugh, no longer resembling the woman who had been willing to die for a man.
Hadn’t he said that as long as she didn’t cause trouble, he would give her everything?
In the days that followed, Lin Nuanyan indulged in shopping sprees.
Anything that caught her eye, she took home.
Shen Lin, on the other hand, remained completely silent.
Lin Nuanyan grew even more unrestrained.
“The life of the rich is truly blissful,” Xiao San mused, wearing a sun hat and hiding at a corner table in a street-side café, her chin resting in her hands as she sighed with emotion.
That’s right.
She was currently tailing Lin Nuanyan.
It had been nearly a week. Because she had to work, she only followed during her off-hours, even turning down several invitations from Zheng Qi in the process.
As the plot drew closer, Xiao San feared that something might actually happen to Lin Nuanyan, so she kept up the surveillance.
She thought that if she could help Lin Nuanyan avoid this crisis, perhaps Lin Nuanyan would be safe.
Beyond that, Xiao San held a sliver of hope.
If she could alter Lin Nuanyan’s storyline, did that mean other plotlines could be changed too? If so, could she continue being friends with Zheng Qi?
Lin Nuanyan’s life was remarkably simple aside from shopping and spending, she did little else.
Today was relatively better; the places Lin Nuanyan visited had cafés nearby, allowing Xiao San to sit down without necessarily having to spend money.
Over this period of tailing Lin Nuanyan, she had wasted quite a bit of money after all, even a glass of water at upscale places cost dozens.
As Xiao San’s thoughts wandered, Lin Nuanyan emerged from the store.
Xiao San watched as the shop assistant fawned over Lin Nuanyan, escorting her out and only handing over the purchases when Lin Nuanyan was about to enter another shop.
If she were in that position, she’d probably act just as obsequiously, it was all about sales commissions.
Sighing once more about how wonderful it was to be rich, Xiao San saw Lin Nuanyan exit another store carrying a bag.
Perhaps there was nothing she liked in that shop.
Lin Nuanyan tossed her purchases into the car and got in.
She didn’t hire a driver but drove herself.
Xiao San quickly hailed a taxi.
Finally, Lin Nuanyan was heading home.
With Lin Nuanyan going home, her day of tailing came to an end.
Xiao San finally breathed a sigh of relief.
The car slowly started moving. Lin Nuanyan’s car was a limited edition model, so the taxi driver didn’t dare follow too closely.
“Are you chasing after a mistress? Your husband must be loaded, that car costs at least a million to start.”
Xiao San didn’t know much about cars, and hearing the taxi driver’s comment, she couldn’t explain why she was tailing Lin Nuanyan. She just laughed it off and said, “She’s not a mistress. It’s my brother wants to pursue her.”
The taxi driver curled his lip. “I’ve seen plenty like you. Your husband’s cheating, and you’re still covering for him. That’s just wrong. If you ask me, you should give him a good beating, teach him a lesson. Stop following that young girl, what if she doesn’t even know about it?”
Xiao San forced an awkward smile. “No beating, no beating.”
“Ah, we taxi drivers see it all. Don’t worry, I won’t go blabbing about it.”
“Mm-hmm.”
Xiao San nodded vaguely. Suddenly, she realized that Lin Nuanyan didn’t seem to be heading home but was instead going toward the outskirts of the city.
The taxi driver continued, “Men, they always think the grass is greener on the other side. Just give him a good thrashing and get on with your life. Honestly, you really need to rein him in. You can’t let him spend money on just anyone. Even if you’re done with him, you should get the money back. Do you have kids? If you do, don’t get a divorce.”
The taxi driver was really talkative. Even though Xiao San didn’t respond much, he kept the conversation going.
By the time Lin Nuanyan’s car stopped at an unfinished building, the taxi driver was still chattering away.
Xiao San quickly got out of the car. “Thanks, driver. I’m here.”
“Hey, why are you getting off?” The taxi driver tried to stop her but failed, watching helplessly as Xiao San walked toward the car. “This place is in the middle of nowhere, with no cars around. How are you going to get back later?”
As he turned the car around, the driver voiced his concern.
In the rearview mirror, he could only see Xiao San glance toward Lin Nuanyan’s car before heading into the unfinished building.
The area was littered with construction debris, and there was no clear path. Fortunately, Xiao San was wearing sneakers. Though she stumbled a few times, she managed to make her way inside.
It was a more than twenty-story unfinished building, with even the stairs not yet poured. She had to climb up along a sloping surface.
At that moment, she finally felt a twinge of fear.
Xiao San didn’t know exactly where Lin Nuanyan would run into trouble, but it was likely related to some unfinished building.
There were still over half a month until Zheng Qi and Shen Lin’s engagement, surely it couldn’t be happening this early, right?
As she mulled it over, Xiao San took out her phone, planning to call the police first.
But there was no signal.
She held up her phone, hoping to catch even a sliver of reception, but she couldn’t just turn back. She was afraid something might really happen to Lin Nuanyan.
Hesitating, Xiao San continued climbing upward.
When she reached the third floor, she finally heard Lin Nuanyan’s voice.
Along with Lin Nuanyan, there were also the voices of several men.
No way, was the plot really starting?
Xiao San nervously pressed herself against the wall, forgetting that this was an unfinished building, not a normal one. As soon as she leaned against it, a layer of gravel and dust crumbled down, and there were even several large gaps where the wall met the staircase.
Her hand rested on the rough surface, and an exposed steel nail accidentally pierced her skin. Startled by the pain, she lost her grip on her phone, which then clattered and slid down the sloped surface.
Xiao San bent down to retrieve it but failed to grab the phone. Instead, her foot got stuck in the gap between the wall and the stairs.
Fortunately, she reacted quickly, dropping to her knees to stop herself from sliding further, or else her thigh might have fractured.
Letting out a sigh of relief, she carefully stood up, intending to go down and retrieve her phone. But as she lifted her head, she noticed a figure standing not far away.
Kneeling on the slope, she could only see that the person wore a pair of sneakers not expensive ones, and covered in mud and dust.
Slowly, she raised her gaze from the worn-out sneakers upward: faded jeans stained with paint and various spots, a shabby T-shirt, and a round, bald head.
The man looked extremely menacing not because of ugly features, but because of the evil gleaming in his eyes.
Xiao San forced a dry laugh. “If I said, I was just passing by, would you believe me?”
The man let out a sharp laugh.
Xiao San immediately turned and ran.
Ignoring the pain in her thigh, she sprinted as fast as she could. Since it was downhill and she didn’t control her speed, she poured every ounce of strength she had into the dash.
The man watched her calmly, then took a few strides and leaped directly from the upper level to the lower one. By the time Xiao San reached the platform, he was already waiting below her.
When she tried to run back up, several rough-looking men descended from above.
Xiao San glanced around, her smile completely gone.
“I thought you said you were coming alone. Why did you bring a girl?” the bald man called up.
Tap, tap, tap.
A series of hurried footsteps followed as Lin Nuoyan jogged over, sweat beading on her forehead. Looking down at Xiao San from above, she didn’t bother to hide her contempt. “Xiao San?”
Xiao San asked, “Do you know each other?”
“Little girl, weren’t you just passing by?” The bald man pulled a knife from his pocket and lightly tapped it against Xiao San’s cheek. “What, are you two acquainted?”
Lin Nuoyan wasn’t in a hurry anymore, descending slowly. “Acquainted? Very much so.”
Xiao San sensed the malice in Lin Nuoyan’s tone, her pupils dilating with fear. “Nuoyan, are these your friends? Tell them to stop joking around, I’m scared.”
“Friends?” The bald man glanced at Lin Nuoyan and sneered. “We’re not friends with Miss Lin. We’re just business partners. Right, Miss Lin?”
Lin Nuoyan gave a soft hum from her throat, acknowledging his words.
Xiao San asked, “Partners in what?”
Ugh, why did I open my mouth?
If she could move, Xiao San would have slapped herself for asking something she shouldn’t have known.
“How to make Shen Lin regret it through cooperation, but” Lin Nuanyan looked at Xiao San with malice, took a deep breath, “How can we make Shen Lin regret it? I thought and thought, guess what happened.”
“Hahaha, you wouldn’t have those guys beat him up, would you? That’s illegal, Nuanyan, think it through,” Xiao San tried to appeal to Lin Nuanyan’s reason.
“Hahahahaha.” Lin Nuanyan laughed, her laughter far more genuine than Xiao San’s. “Why beat him up? What good would that do?”
Xiao San: “You’re not thinking of killing someone, are you?”
If it’s murder, wouldn’t she be in danger too now?
The bald man also laughed, his laughter sinister. He placed his hand on Xiao San’s shoulder, his thumb rubbing back and forth. “Miss Lin is much smarter than you.”
Suddenly, Xiao San remembered what had happened to Lin Nuanyan.
In the original plot, after being violated by a few thugs, Lin Nuanyan was abandoned in the wilderness, left for dead.
Now, the wilderness, the thugs, and Lin Nuanyan were all here.
Only she was the odd one out.
No, no.
Wait, that’s not right. Later, Lin Nuanyan didn’t die. Xiao San remembered there was a plot in the novel where the female lead had to donate a kidney to her first love. If the first love didn’t die, then who was the one abandoned in the wilderness.
Xiao San’s eyes widened in shock.
