The Tragic Heroine Fell in Love with Me - Chapter 31
Xiao San let out a snort, tinged with both disdain and self-mockery. “What love and hate? There’s nothing like that.”
“Hey, so what exactly happened between you two?” Lü Yu leaned in, eager for gossip.
Xiao San was about to say it was Zheng Qi, but she paused, the flesh on her cheeks twitching unnaturally. “Forget it, you wouldn’t know even if I told you.”
“Hey, hey, hey, you clearly wanted to say it, didn’t you?”
Xiao San snorted again.
When Ge Weizhong heard that Xiao San had fallen at the gathering, even spraining her ankle and ending up in the hospital, he immediately forgot about cozying up to Mi Sirui and rushed to the hospital by car.
Upon reaching the hospital corridor and seeing Xiao San and Lü Yu chatting and laughing, he finally breathed a sigh of relief.
“Xiao San, are you okay? I was so worried about you.”
Lü Yu blinked at Xiao San. “Senior Weizhong is here.”
Xiao San sighed and shook her head helplessly at Lü Yu. “Stop messing around.”
As Ge Weizhong approached, Xiao San apologized, “Sorry to trouble you, Senior Weizhong, for coming to see me. I’m actually fine, just a sprained ankle and a few bruises.”
“Just that? What would it take for you to consider it serious?” Ge Weizhong said with concern.
Xiao San replied, “I can still run and jump, so it’s nothing. Did A-Yu tell you? I’m sorry to bother you. Weren’t you busy? Did coming here delay your work? I’m really fine, so you should go back and attend to your matters.”
Ge Weizhong felt a pang of hurt. “Is it because it’s me that you don’t want me here?”
His words were rather blunt, leaving Xiao San unsure how to respond.
Ge Weizhong continued, “Just think of me as an ordinary senior. Maybe I’ve been too forward, making you uncomfortable. But even if you’re just an ordinary junior, isn’t it natural for me to visit you?”
Xiao San forced a dry laugh.
The reason she didn’t want Ge Weizhong to come was to avoid misunderstandings with Sang Yihan and further trouble.
But Ge Weizhong’s words had laid everything out in the open.
Xiao San suddenly realized that Ge Weizhong’s feelings for her might not be purely those of a senior toward a junior.
This was more than just awkward.
She even felt that she wouldn’t be able to face Sang Yihan with the same confidence in the future if Sang Yihan came to cause trouble again.
“Alright, let me take you home. I’m heading back anyway, so it’s on the way,” Ge Weizhong said, afraid Xiao San would refuse. He emphasized the words “on the way” and added, “As a senior, isn’t it only right for me to escort an injured junior home?”
“It’s not that it’s not okay..” Xiao San said awkwardly, “but I’ve filed a police report here. I’m afraid I’ll have to give a statement at the station before I can go back. Senior, you must have your own things to attend to. I really don’t want to trouble you.”
“Police report? What happened that required a police report?”
Lü Yu, unable to stand the polite distance between them any longer, chimed in, “We’re suing Huang Meiqi! She caused us so much trouble not suing her would be a waste of the medical fees we paid.”
“You’re injured too?” Ge Weizhong asked.
This time, it was Lü Yu who snorted.
She pointed to the bandage on her palm and the one on her arm.
“As the student council president, I don’t necessarily need your concern, but when you look at me, could you at least glance at my injured arm?” Lü Yu rolled her eyes in exasperation.
Ge Weizhong flushed bright red. “Ah, sorry.”
“Alright, you two chat. I’m going outside to see if the police have arrived.”
After saying this, Lü Yu stood up and left.
Halfway down the hall, she turned back and gave Xiao San a cheering gesture.
Xiao San felt speechless she really didn’t want to be left alone to chat with Ge Weizhong. It was even more awkward now.
Just as the two faced each other in awkward silence, with the corridor filled entirely with Ge Weizhong’s worried chatter, Zheng Qi and her male assistant, Li Ailun, stood not far away, observing the scene.
Li Ailun was of mixed Chinese and French heritage, with distinctly foreign features, yet he spoke fluent Mandarin.
He had been hired by Zheng Qi overseas and hadn’t been by her side for long, but he had already fully grasped her temperament and could be considered her right-hand man.
“Wow, boss, looks like we’re a bit late. Someone’s already here offering comfort,” Li Ailun said regretfully, holding the fruits they had bought. “Seems like I’ll have to eat these myself, or they’ll go to waste.”
“Shut up,” Zheng Qi snapped irritably.
Li Ailun covered his mouth. “Yes, boss. I’ve manually shut my mouth.”
He obeyed in words but defied in actions.
“That guy likes Miss Xiao, doesn’t he? Otherwise, why would he be so eager to come here? I don’t believe they’re just ordinary friends.”
Zheng Qi shot Li Ailun a glance.
Li Ailun mimed zipping his lips shut.
Xiao San and Ge Weizhong seemed to be chatting quite amiably.
Zheng Qi felt a sharp, twisting pain in her heart.
Li Ailun glanced at Xiao San, then back at his boss, and unzipped his imaginary zipper to ask, “Boss, I have a question.”
Zheng Qi: “Don’t ask.”
“Alright, I wanted to ask if you like Miss Xiao San. It seems like you’re nursing a one-sided crush.”
Before he could finish, Zheng Qi threw a backhanded punch. Fortunately, Li Ailun blocked it in time, or he would have been knocked to the ground.
“Boss, even if you’re heartbroken over a crush, you don’t have to go that far.”
“Don’t make up stories about my relationship with her. We’re best friends.”
How could he understand her feelings for Xiao San? Her heart contracted faintly, the pain spreading through her limbs like vines. She wouldn’t allow anyone to tarnish her feelings for Xiao San.
Li Ailun still held Zheng Qi’s arm, which hadn’t loosened its grip in the slightest. “Boss, the way you look at a best friend isn’t like that.”
Zheng Qi withdrew her arm and sneered, “If you don’t want to be fired, you’d better keep your mouth shut.”
Li Ailun zipped his lips again and mumbled a few indistinct words.
Zheng Qi glared at him, and Li Ailun quickly retreated a few steps, hiding in an even more secluded corner. He shrugged his shoulders, looking pitiful and helpless.
Over there, Xiao San and Ge Weizhong had stood up.
They began walking out together, forcing Zheng Qi to turn around and hide.
For some reason, she didn’t want Xiao San to see her like this.
“Senior, I’m really troubling you.” After being relentlessly pestered by Ge Weizhong, Xiao San had no choice but to agree to let him accompany her to the police station and then take her home.
Ge Weizhong scratched his head, unable to hide his delight at this small victory. “It’s no trouble at all. I was heading back anyway.”
Xiao San turned around in confusion, but aside from a few patients in the corridor behind her, she didn’t see anyone familiar.
“What’s wrong?” Ge Weizhong asked.
Xiao San shook her head. “It’s nothing, probably just my imagination.”
Xiao San had come out after receiving a message from Lü Yu. By the time she stepped outside, the police had already arrived. Following the procedure, Xiao San handed over all the documents to the officers and then accompanied them to the police station to give her statement.
Naturally, Ge Weizhong went along as well.
Zheng Qi followed them to the entrance and instructed Li Ailun, “Find a lawyer.”
“Mmph mmph mmph!” Li Ailun pointed at his own mouth, indicating he still couldn’t speak.
Zheng Qi sighed helplessly at Li Ailun. “You can talk now.”
Li Ailun finally unzipped his mouth. “Whew, I was about to suffocate! Boss, if you hadn’t said anything, I might’ve kicked the bucket.”
“How did I end up with an assistant like you?” Zheng Qi couldn’t help but roll his eyes before turning to leave.
“Hey, Boss, that eye-roll is totally out of character for you! You can’t do that!” Li Ailun hurried after him, already typing a message on his phone.
Zheng Qi ignored him.
Meanwhile, Xiao San had just learned that she could apply for a free lawyer.
“I’m from a public service organization. Since I just started working, I’m looking for cases to take on. Do you need help? I’m free of charge.” The young man in his twenties smiled flirtatiously, as if he saw Xiao San as a delicious piece of cake.
Ge Weizhong quickly stepped in front of Xiao San. “We don’t need one.”
The young lawyer wasn’t offended by the rejection and instead turned his attention to Lü Yu. “How about you, miss? Do you need a lawyer?”
Lü Yu clutched her chest and looked at Xiao San, mouthing the words, “Who could resist this?”
It was no wonder Lü Yu was tempted, the young lawyer had an upright appearance with thick eyebrows and big eyes, looking every bit like a capable and trustworthy person.
Xiao San was in no mood to be cheerful today, even in the presence of a handsome guy.
Lü Yu pleaded, “Let’s hire him, let’s hire him! He looks so pitiful.”
The young lawyer quickly put on a pleading expression as well. “Please hire me. I’m cheap and very effective.”
With all this fuss, even Ge Weizhong found it hard to say no.
Xiao San nodded in agreement.
The young lawyer promptly handed over his business card with both hands. It read “Peng Yu,” followed by the name of his law firm, which didn’t seem like some unknown outfit.
Peng Yu didn’t introduce himself further but went straight in to gather more information.
Xiao San had already finished giving her statement. An hour later, Peng Yu had handled all the remaining procedures. Xiao San didn’t even need to say another word, she could go home now.
Peng Yu still wore his harmless, innocent smile. “Miss Xiao San, Miss Lü Yu, don’t worry. Leave the rest to me. If we need to go to court, I’ll contact both of you.”
Lü Yu found it all a bit unbelievable.
The process of giving a statement at the police station wasn’t complicated, but before filing the lawsuit, we had to endure all sorts of lectures from the police. Now, it was just a matter of giving a statement no need to argue or fight for our case, as all the procedures were already in place.
“Oh, Miss Lü Yu, don’t look like that. I already told you, even though I’m cheap, I’m really useful.”
“I can’t see it at all,” Lü Yu leaned closer to Xiao San. “He looks completely unreliable smooth-talking and slick but who would’ve thought he’d actually be quite capable.”
Xiao San said, “You were the one who strongly recommended him earlier.”
“Well, who told him to be so good-looking?”
“Wake up, you already have a boyfriend.”
Lü Yu nudged Xiao San. “Even though I have a boyfriend, you don’t.”
As soon as she said it, Lü Yu remembered that Xiao San’s suitor was standing right there. She bit her tongue and quickly fell silent.
