- Chapter 15 - The Fever Period
At that moment, the man bid farewell to Lin Qingyu, mentioning that he had matters to attend to.
Watching the man’s receding back, Pei Yan asked curiously, “Dad, who is that? I haven’t seen him before.”
He felt as if the person looked somewhat familiar.
Lin Qingyu lowered his gaze, a fleeting, bitter smile tugging at the corner of his mouth. “A… friend of mine. Don’t mind him.”
Since Lin Qingyu told him not to mind, Pei Yan didn’t press further. He pushed the wheelchair as they entered the villa.
Just as they stepped inside, a small dog came rushing up, tail wagging and whimpering with excitement.
Pei Yan picked it up naturally, stroking its chubby body. “Lucky has grown so much. He doesn’t pee everywhere anymore, does he?”
He remembered when he first saw the pup; it was thin, tiny, and could only shrink into a corner, shivering with its tail between its legs. Now, it had grown as round as a ball, and its personality was much more lively.
Lin Qingyu laughed. “He was just scared at first. He fixed that habit long ago.”
Lucky stuck out its tongue, enthusiastically licking Pei Yan’s face. Pei Yan laughed as he tilted his head back to dodge, but his chin was still caught by the licks. He remained unaware that this scene made Xie Yu’s eyes turn red with envy.
He also wanted to be held in his brother’s arms—that was supposed to be his spot!
Perhaps sensing Xie Yu’s intense jealousy, Pei Yan set Lucky down and patted its head, sending it off to play elsewhere.
When it came time for dinner, Lin Qingyu kept piling food onto Xie Yu’s plate until Pei Yan couldn’t stand it anymore.
“Dad, the food in his bowl is about to overflow.”
Lin Qingyu ignored him and asked kindly, “Xiao Yu, which family do you belong to?”
“I picked him up,” Pei Yan said while taking a bite of food.
Lin Qingyu glared at him. “You child, always talking nonsense…”
Xie Yu picked up his chopsticks and smiled. “Uncle, I really was picked up and brought home by Brother.”
Lin Qingyu was stunned for a few seconds before saying gently, “It’s alright. From now on, Xiao Yu, just treat this as your own home… If Pei Yan ever bullies you in the future, just tell Uncle. Uncle will definitely stand up for you.”
Pei Yan: “…”
First of all, could this Mr. Lin please figure out who his actual son is?
Secondly, is it even possible for him to bully this “smelly fish”?
Xie Yu glanced at Pei Yan, an action Lin Qingyu caught. He assumed the boy was afraid to speak because Pei Yan was present. Instantly, several melodramatic plots flashed through his mind—something like “kidnapping a stray youth for forced love.”
But he dismissed the thought the next second. Lin Qingyu firmly believed his son was incapable of such low behavior.
After dinner, Lin Qingyu called Pei Yan to the study, while Xie Yu stayed downstairs to play with the dog.
Pei Yan followed him up. As soon as the door closed, he heard Lin Qingyu ask calmly, “The explosion of the spacecraft was intentional, wasn’t it? Have you found out who did it?”
“No.” Pei Yan paused for a moment. “However, the leadership of the Northern Base wanted to kill me once they found out I was still alive. Although the hitman is dead, I believe there must be a mastermind behind it.”
Lin Qingyu’s handsome brow furrowed slightly. “The Northern Base has no grievance with you; they wouldn’t suddenly develop a killing intent…”
He paused, his gaze turning cold. “The person who truly wants you dead must be someone from the Capital, and someone with no small amount of power and status!”
Pei Yan: “…”
Lin Qingyu continued, “It likely has everything to do with that incident seven years ago that caused your memory loss. Even the method used to take your life is exactly the same—utterly despicable!”
“Cough, cough, cough…”
At this point, Lin Qingyu’s breathing became rapid and heavy. His chest heaved violently with anger, finally erupting into a fit of intense coughing.
Pei Yan hurried to pat his back to ease his breathing, then poured a glass of water and fed him a few sips before Lin Qingyu finally calmed down.
Pei Yan set the glass down and helped him sit. “Extreme anger harms the body. You know that.”
Lin Qingyu’s eyes grew red. He grasped Pei Yan’s hands, worrying aloud, “I just don’t want history to repeat itself. You were lucky seven years ago and again this time. But what if there’s a next time? What would you do? The enemy is in the shadows while you are in the light. How can you possibly predict their methods?”
Pei Yan patted the back of his hand. “Now that I’ve returned to the Capital, they will at least be wary of my status in the Alliance and won’t dare to act recklessly.”
“But…” Lin Qingyu was still uneasy. As if thinking of something, he said urgently, “If all else fails, go find your father. Even if he dislikes me, you are still his son. He will honor that blood relation.”
Pei Yan’s fingers curled slightly. “Dad, you know how he is. In his heart, power and status are the most important things. If he finds out it’s someone from the Empire who wants me dead, do you think he would stand with us or with the Empire?”
Lin Qingyu: “…”
Seeing his poor state, Pei Yan comforted him, “Don’t worry, I will definitely protect myself. You need to take good care of yourself, too.”
After their talk, Pei Yan escorted Lin Qingyu to his bedroom to rest and then headed downstairs.
Little did he know that after he left, Lin Qingyu’s trembling hand dialed a number.
Downstairs on the living room sofa, Xie Yu was teasing Lucky.
Lucky was huddled miserably on his lap, not daring to resist.
Seeing him come down, both the person and the dog ran over to compete for his favor. Predictably, the final winner was Xie Yu—though it couldn’t be ruled out that Lucky was simply terrified.
“Brother, are we going home?”
Xie Yu naturally took hold of Pei Yan’s hand.
Pei Yan didn’t feel like nitpicking about the fact that the boy had lied to him anymore. He gave a soft “Mm” and said, “Let’s go home.”
Ultimately, Xie Yu explained himself while they were in the car.
One month ago, at night:
Xie Yu had followed a scent to find Gu Xibai, who was on his way back to the palace. His sudden appearance startled both the man and the fish.
“You… why are you here again?”
Xie Yu didn’t waste time with pleasantries and got straight to the point: “I want you to send me to the Northern Base.”
Gu Xibai: “…”
It was the first time he had ever been ordered around like that. He didn’t react for a moment.
Xie Yu’s eyes shimmered with a ghostly light. “Not going to help?”
Seeing that he was about to lose his temper, Gu Xibai said hurriedly, “I’ll help, I’ll help!”
Then, taking advantage of a banquet in the palace when security was lax, Gu Xibai secretly took his own spacecraft to fly Xie Yu toward the Northern Base. However, they were intercepted halfway by men sent by his father.
In the heat of the moment, Xie Yu jumped into the sea, thus beginning his journey of asking for directions.
Pei Yan: “…”
He hadn’t expected the actual situation to be like this.
Xie Yu stared at Pei Yan expectantly. “So, Brother, I didn’t really lie to you. I truly did swim here on my own.”
Pei Yan met his gaze. “The point isn’t how you got here. The point is that I hate being lied to, do you understand?”
“Wasn’t that just to clear up Mr. Lu’s suspicions?” Xie Yu lowered his eyes aggrievedly.
Pei Yan reached out and tilted his chin up. “So… it was my fault this time.”
With that, he closed his eyes and kissed him.
Xie Yu blinked, then deepened the kiss.
After the kiss ended, Pei Yan felt hot from head to toe. He took a few hurried breaths and started driving home, but that heat wouldn’t dissipate.
What’s going on? It was just a kiss; why am I worked up like this?
In the passenger seat, Xie Yu’s nose twitched, and his expression changed slightly. “Brother, is your fever period here?”
Pei Yan’s brow furrowed tightly. Calculating the time, it indeed seemed to be the one-month transition period the doctor had mentioned.
He swung the steering wheel, turning toward the previous villa. He immediately called Uncle Xu, telling him that his rut (fever) had arrived and that, aside from providing daily supplies, he was not to be disturbed by anyone.
Uncle Xu didn’t doubt him and followed the instructions immediately.
By the time Pei Yan parked the car, his entire body had gone soft. He didn’t even have the strength to open the car door. This felt completely different from his usual Alpha ruts, and he felt a sense of frustration.
He took all of this annoyance out on Xie Yu—though it was a limp, painless sort of venting.
Looking at Pei Yan, who had suddenly flipped over to sit on him with a flushed face and blurred eyes, Xie Yu’s Adam’s apple bobbed as he swallowed hard.
He took Pei Yan’s hand and guided it to strike his own body, his voice deep and raspy. “Brother, just hit me as hard as you want. I won’t hit back.”
Pei Yan had no strength to hit him. He slumped against him, breathing aimlessly, as a wave of heat surged within him. Restless and suffering, Pei Yan squirmed uncomfortably.
Sensing the coolness of Xie Yu’s body, he pressed into the crook of his neck, burying his face and rubbing against him.
But this wasn’t enough to soothe the heat inside him. He pulled back, staring down at Xie Yu from above. His expression rarely showed a hint of grievance as he tugged at his own clothes, saying, “I’m hot… it hurts…”
Xie Yu couldn’t take it anymore. He unbuttoned his shirt in a few quick motions and let Pei Yan press against him. Their bare upper bodies clung together without obstruction—one cold, one hot. The comfort made Pei Yan let out a few sighs of relief.
The pheromone concentration in the car spiked rapidly. Xie Yu felt like he was drowning in the scent. He quickly opened the car door, carried Pei Yan into the villa, and went upstairs to the bedroom.
No one knew who started it, but the two were already kissing passionately. By the time Pei Yan was gently placed on the bed, they were meeting each other with complete honesty.
Pei Yan’s glands throbbed violently. His habits as an Alpha remained; he bit Xie Yu’s shoulder hard, then tilted his head toward Xie Yu’s glands, trying to latch on and inject pheromones. Reflexively, Xie Yu reached out and gripped his neck.
Realizing what he was doing, Xie Yu immediately let go. Feeling his gland being bitten open, he suppressed his Enigma instincts, letting Pei Yan mess around with his gland as he pleased.
At the same time, he released soothing pheromones to calm Pei Yan.
Smelling Xie Yu’s pheromones, Pei Yan’s biting slowed. His nose twitched as he leaned in to sniff deeply. Every part of his being was screaming, craving for this pheromone to invade him.
But Pei Yan was resisting that craving. The pride remaining from being an Alpha for over twenty years told him he didn’t want to become someone who begged for someone else to take him. He hated this feeling of being out of control.
He struggled in agony, his desire and logic locked in combat. He bit his lower lip hard, trying to use pain to clear his head, refusing to become a beast with no reason that succumbed to lust.
Tears filled his eyes and rolled down one by one.
Xie Yu knew his pain.
He tenderly kissed away the tears, enduring his own desire, doing everything he could to radiate his soothing pheromones…
Under Xie Yu’s gentle comfort, Pei Yan peaked again and again. Finally, his logic took a back seat. Panting heavily, he looked at Xie Yu quietly, then proactively reached out to wrap his arms around his neck and kiss his chin.
The string that had been pulled tight in Xie Yu’s mind suddenly snapped. His eyes flashed with a ghostly blue light, filled with intense desire and darkness. His lips parted slightly as he let out a heavy breath, revealing sharp teeth.
He stared at Pei Yan, gripped his wrists, and pulled him into his embrace.
Who knows how long passed. Pei Yan only felt the cycle repeating over and over. Aside from eating, fainting, and bathing, he was almost constantly stuck to Xie Yu. By the end, he radiated the scent of an Enigma from the inside out…
Later, the two of them became familiar with every corner of the villa; the entire place was stained with their pheromones.
