- Chapter 12 - The Frame-up
Pei Yan frowned slightly. He didn’t usually take a dislike to an Omega easily, but this one was an exception.
“See? I hit the nail on the head, didn’t I? That’s why you’re so angry. I will definitely save him from your side!”
If you have delusions, go get them treated.
Don’t just make things up in your own head.
Pei Yan was too bothered to deal with him. He picked up his sickle and prepared to head down to the field, but unexpectedly, the Omega suddenly grabbed his hand. Using that force to push off, the Omega threw himself backward into a nearby puddle, a smug smile hanging on the corner of his lips.
Pei Yan: “…”
What kind of melodramatic nonsense has he run into now?
Does he think he’s acting in a TV drama?
This sudden turn of events caused the people working nearby to stop what they were doing.
“What’s going on here?”
The Omega was soaking wet. He immediately pointed at Pei Yan, his tears flowing the moment he willed them to. “I have no grudge or enmity with you. Why did you push me?”
Xie Yu noticed the situation over there and hurried over.
The Omega was overjoyed, thinking Xie Yu was coming to help him up. He raised his hand, waiting to be supported, only to find that the man didn’t give him so much as a glance. His eyes and heart were entirely focused on that annoying Alpha.
“Brother, are you okay?”
Pei Yan shook his head.
The Omega’s outstretched hand froze in mid-air, looking extremely awkward.
No matter how you looked at it, he should be the one who was “not okay.”
He started crying pitifully again. “I only said a few words to you, and he pushed me on purpose. Brother, you have to stand up for me~”
However, as soon as he finished speaking, he saw Xie Yu’s eyes light up; if he had a tail, it would be wagging toward the sky.
“Brother, is what he said true?”
Seeing his internal reaction, Pei Yan was somewhat speechless. “No.”
“Oh.”
Xie Yu looked visibly disappointed.
Omega: “…”
What do you mean? You seem unhappy that he didn’t push me?!
“Brother—”
The Omega had just opened his mouth to call out when he saw Xie Yu sweep a cold glance over him.
In an instant, it was as if he had fallen into an ice cellar. His blood curdled, and he didn’t even dare to breathe too loudly.
At this moment, a girl who had been watching from the sidelines for a long time stepped forward, ruthlessly exposing his lie.
“Brother Pei didn’t push you at all. Stop acting.”
The adults near her changed their expressions and hurriedly tried to pull the girl back, but she brushed them off.
The terrifying feeling of being watched vanished, and the Omega immediately took several deep breaths. His back was still covered in a dense, tingling sensation, as if hundreds of ants were crawling on it.
But facing someone else’s accusation, he still subconsciously retorted: “…You’re talking nonsense. Do you have any evidence?”
Zhang Shanshan folded her arms. “Do I need evidence to expose you? Liu Lin, I see you’re just uncomfortable if you don’t look for trouble every few days.”
“Zhang Shanshan!” Liu Lin screamed. “You’re going against me again!”
“Don’t shout so loud, I can hear you.” Zhang Shanshan didn’t take him to heart at all, reaching up to pick at her ear. “And what do you mean ‘going against’ you? Everyone knows what kind of person you are. Look at the people in this whole village—see if a single one believes your words.”
Liu Lin looked around and found that everyone indeed wasn’t paying attention to him. They continued with whatever they were doing, completely unaffected, and no one had stopped for the sake of the incident he had staged.
He felt indignant in his heart, his face carrying the irritation of being seen through. “Zhang Shanshan, I won’t let you off! When my brother comes back, I’ll have him take care of you!”
Zhang Shanshan stuck out her tongue disdainfully. “Who’s afraid of you!”
Liu Lin stood up. His back was covered in mud, which clung to him wetly. This attempt at framing someone was truly a case of “going for wool and coming home shorn.”
He left the field in a rage and headed toward his home.
Seeing Liu Lin leave, Zhang Shanshan turned to look at Pei Yan. “Brother Pei, don’t pay him any mind. He’s just someone who likes to covet things that don’t belong to him.”
“I don’t care about that. But your family seems… very afraid of him?”
Zhang Shanshan rolled her eyes. “His father is our village chief, and his brother, Liu Xiao, is a squad leader at the Northern Base. He’s extremely protective. Liu Lin loves to tattle, so people get targeted by his brother—like intentionally not distributing supplies, or ignoring your family’s safety during Zerg attacks. Plus, he comes back to the village every few days to patrol. So, no one in the village wants to provoke Liu Lin. Even if they’re mistreated, they choose to swallow their anger.”
She paused. “Even the communal rice-harvesting machines are monopolized by his family. It’s like a single family ruling as emperors.”
Pei Yan frowned. “Doesn’t the Northern Base care?”
Zhang Shanshan snorted. “How could they care? Our appeals never have a chance to reach the top; his brother suppresses them. Not only that, but he also tracks down the source to punish people as a warning to others. Over time, no one dares to report anything.”
“Then you…”
“I’ve disliked his family for a long time. It has nothing to do with you.”
Pei Yan comforted her, “Don’t worry, I will handle this matter. Don’t be afraid.”
Hearing this, Zhang Shanshan’s eyes reddened slightly. Truthfully, she had felt some fear when she spoke up to resist, but she didn’t want to back down anymore.
Though she had known Brother Pei for less than a few days, she had always felt he was a very good person. She didn’t want him to suffer Liu Lin’s malicious framing and be isolated for no reason.
Moreover, she could sense an extraordinary aura from him, so she had decided to take a gamble.
This time, it seemed she had bet correctly.
In the evening, Pei Yan told Qi Lan about the situation. Qi Lan pondered for a moment and said, “Actually, I’ve thought about going to the Northern Base, but clearly, a tiny village won’t catch their attention. Instead, it would only strengthen Liu Xiao’s control over this place.”
“Why not leave here?” Xie Yu suddenly asked.
Qi Lan glanced at him, forcing himself to remain calm. “…In this current world, where would they go? Besides, most of the villagers are unwilling to leave their homes. They’d rather die in this village.”
Pei Yan: “How do I see Liu Xiao?”
Mo Lu, who had been silent all along, said: “You’re looking for him?”
“Yes.” Pei Yan nodded, and fearing Mo Lu might have reservations, he added: “Don’t worry, I won’t involve you all.”
Mo Lu held Qi Lan’s hand and smiled faintly. “I don’t care. A-Lan and I can find another place to survive, but I don’t want to see the simple people of this village oppressed anymore.”
Qi Lan smiled sweetly at him.
He knew he hadn’t chosen the wrong person.
“Actually, I—”
Just as Pei Yan was about to speak, a sudden commotion broke out outside.
A childish yet arrogant voice shouted, “Brother, it’s this house!”
Pei Yan and the others went into the yard and saw a crowd of people swarming into the neighboring lot, aggressive and each holding a gun.
Qi Lan whispered, “The man leading them is Liu Xiao.”
After saying that, he felt a terrifying gaze and quickly moved a few steps away, for fear of upsetting his family’s “King.”
Pei Yan’s entire attention was focused on that group of people, so he didn’t notice that detail at all.
Little Yang’s parents heard the noise and came out. When they saw who it was, their faces paled with shock. They rushed forward with strained, flattering smiles. “Captain Liu, why are you here?”
Liu Xiao stated coldly, “My younger brother said your son bullied him at school.”
Little Yang’s parents’ expressions froze. They said cautiously, “Our child said it was your brother who was bullying people…”
Liu Xiao shot them a sharp look, and they immediately silenced themselves, their bodies unable to stop trembling.
He said with displeasure, “According to you, my little brother got what he deserved?”
“No, no, that’s not what I meant.” Little Yang’s parents waved their hands frantically. “This is indeed our child’s fault. Xiao Yang, come out and apologize!”
They beckoned to Little Yang, who was inside the house.
Little Yang stood by the door with a stubborn expression, his head held high. “I’m not wrong! He was the one bullying first!”
“Brother, look at him!” The chubby little boy felt very wronged, tugging at Liu Xiao’s sleeve and shaking it. “Brother, quickly go teach him a lesson for me.”
Liu Xiao waved his hand, and a large, tall soldier behind him began walking toward Little Yang.
Little Yang’s parents desperately blocked the way in front of their son, pleading bitterly, only to be ruthlessly pushed aside by the soldier. Fortunately, Pei Yan rushed up in time to support them so they didn’t fall.
Seeing who it was, Liu Xiao fiddled with the gun in his hand, slowly pointing it at Pei Yan. “You must be that annoying Alpha my second brother mentioned, right?”
Little Yang’s parents hurriedly hugged their son and hid to the side.
Xie Yu’s eyes darkened. He moved forward, attempting to block Pei Yan, but Pei Yan gently pressed him back, giving him a “it’s okay” look. Pei Yan then looked at Liu Xiao and mocked: “Is this how the Lord of the Northern Base educates his subordinates?”
Liu Xiao frowned deeply and stepped closer to Pei Yan, the gun pressing directly against his forehead. “Who are you to dare speak to me like that?!”
“Heh, it seems there is indeed a lack of management.”
Pei Yan sneered and suddenly moved.
Liu Xiao didn’t even see the movement clearly before the gun in his hand was snatched away. He himself was locked in a chokehold from behind, with the gun pressed against his temple.
The surrounding soldiers were stunned for a few seconds before they reacted, reaching for their guns.
Pei Yan barked coldly, “Don’t move, or don’t blame the gun for having no eyes!”
The restrained Liu Xiao wasn’t afraid at all. Instead, he even felt like mocking Pei Yan. “With so many people here, you don’t dare kill me.”
Without a word, Pei Yan fired a shot into his leg. Blood immediately gushed out.
Liu Xiao was stunned for a second, then the intense pain hit him.
He turned pale with pain, his mouth hanging open to scream, but he found he couldn’t make a sound. Physiological tears filled his eyes, and his entire body went limp, sinking toward the ground.
Pei Yan let go of him, letting Liu Xiao collapse on the floor, while the gun in his hand remained pointed steadily at him.
“You… you have a lot of nerve! Do you know who is backing Captain Liu?!”
Pei Yan suddenly looked at the man and smiled playfully.
It seemed things weren’t that simple.
He had wondered how a mere patrol squad leader dared to be so arrogant; turns out, he had someone “above” him.
Pei Yan practiced patience, feigning fear as he said, “I don’t know. Can you tell me?”
Seeing him falter, the soldier thought he was truly scared and said smugly, “Captain Liu is the person Second Lieutenant Cao of the Base Headquarters thinks most highly of. If you hurt him, the Lieutenant will not let you go!”
No wonder. So it was the power given by a Lieutenant.
Pei Yan stopped wasting words with them and said directly, “Contact the Lord of your Northern Base. Tell him that the Commander of the Alliance is still alive.”
As soon as these words were spoken, the soldiers’ faces were filled with shock and disbelief.
They couldn’t believe they had found the Pei Commander—who had been missing for half a month—in a remote village, and had even offended him!
A soldier asked tentatively, “Are you… the Pei Commander whose warship crashed half a month ago?”
Pei Yan was too lazy to explain to them. “Hurry up. My patience is limited. If you make the connection, it counts as a merit for you.”
Hearing this, the soldiers immediately scrambled, using their personal wristbands to call the Northern Base Headquarters.
Seconds later, the headquarters picked up. The operator spoke in a very official voice: “This is Headquarters. How can we help?”
“Calling Headquarters, this is Squad F1923. We have found Commander Pei in Qingshui Village.”
There was a moment of silence on the other end, followed by the sound of static and the rustle of clothes. Then, the voice of the Base Lord came through: “Are you sure?”
Pei Yan raised his voice and said, “Lord, I am Pei Yan. I am still alive.”
The Lord was stunned for a moment, then laughed. “It’s good that you are fine. I will send someone to pick you up immediately.”
Pei Yan smiled. “Just send Second Lieutenant Cao. I happen to want to discuss some matters with him.”
“Alright, alright. I will arrange for Second Lieutenant Cao to pick you up immediately.”
After the communication was cut, the previously smiling Lord of the Northern Base suddenly turned dark-faced. He gathered the high-level officials to discuss the matter, and their expressions were equally grave.
“What do we do now? He isn’t dead. We won’t be able to explain to the Empire…”
The Lord glared at him, and the official immediately shut up, seemingly wary of something.
“No matter what, since he isn’t dead, we must find a way to make him die!”
“Does the Lord have a plan yet?”
“How could I have a plan? Major General Lu is coming here every few days. Time is tight and the task is heavy.” The Lord rubbed his forehead. “Since he just left, send more people and have them find a way to get rid of Pei Yan.”
“Then who should we send?”
“He requested Second Lieutenant Cao, so let it be him. If discovered, we can use those dirty things he’s done as a cover.”
Meanwhile, at the Communications Department.
The operator dialed a number, and it was quickly answered.
“Major General Lu, Commander Pei has been found. He is currently in Qingshui Village.”
