Chapter 46: Future Sister-in-Law?
If he hadn’t spotted the “receptionist” constantly glancing in this direction and the “cleaner” pretending to slack off near the front door, Bai Xun might have actually been intimidated by that threat.
However, he remained dedicated to his role. He frowned and tried to scoot away, only to shrink his neck when he locked eyes with the bodyguard guarding his wheelchair. He stayed frozen in a half-turned posture for quite a while before finally “giving up resistance.” He asked hesitantly, “Then what benefit do I get for agreeing? Aren’t you afraid I’ll call the police?”
“The benefit is the smooth future and the life of comfort I’ve promised you. As for calling the police…” Yu Shengguang shook his head slightly, as if mocking his naivety. “What evidence do you have? This corner isn’t covered by surveillance. I could easily say you’re just an influencer trying to leech off my fame. Who do you think the police will believe?”
As if pleased by Bai Xun’s pale face, Yu Shengguang softened his tone and continued, “But don’t worry. As long as you’re willing to cooperate, everything is negotiable.”
With that, a bodyguard brought over paper, a pen, and an ink pad, standing motionless beside Bai Xun to watch him.
“I’ll dictate, you write.” Yu Shengguang watched with composure as Bai Xun reluctantly picked up the pen. “I, Bai Xun, am a business partner of Guangyao Energy. I hereby voluntarily promise to assist Mr. Yu Shengguang, the grand-uncle of my boyfriend…”
“Wait a minute, Brother and I aren’t…” Bai Xun interrupted.
What boyfriend? What is this nonsense? What is this old man thinking?
But on second thought, since he had the recording as evidence anyway, this had no legal standing. He could write whatever the man wanted.
“Aren’t what?” Yu Shengguang snorted, as if seeing through a little scheme. “There’s no point in wasting time playing innocent now. Keep writing.”
After stalling for nearly ten minutes, Bai Xun was “forced” to complete this so-called “Voluntary Commitment Letter.” While Yu Shengguang checked the details, Bai Xun added a final touch to his performance with a trembling voice.
“You were lying to me from the very beginning, weren’t you?”
Yu Shengguang didn’t even look up. He carefully read every sentence before tucking the letter away. He stood up, walked to the table, and patted Bai Xun’s shoulder. “How can you call it lying? I can give you much more than being kicked aside after being used, can’t I?”
“You—”
“What are you doing?”
The two turned simultaneously to see Yu Congyue walking in with a dark expression. Seeing Yu Shengguang’s hand still resting on Bai Xun’s shoulder, his face became even grimmer.
“Congyue, you’re here? Don’t be nervous. I saw that Xiaobai is a bright kid and wanted to chat with him about the development of new media.” Yu Shengguang rose calmly, showing no guilt at all, as if things had really happened exactly as he said.
“It better be that way. Xiaobai is a patient and needs rest. Please do not contact him privately again, Grand-uncle.”
Yu Shengguang’s bodyguards didn’t dare move against Yu Congyue. They could only watch as he picked Bai Xun up and walked straight out. Matt, who had rushed back, carried a cake and looked around “blankly” before “politely” reclaiming the wheelchair from the guards and following them out.
…
They were a good distance from the cafe, but Yu Congyue was still carrying Bai Xun bridal-style with no intention of putting him back in the wheelchair. Passersby stared, making Bai Xun feel quite self-conscious.
“Brother, you can put me down now…” he whispered into Yu Congyue’s ear.
Yu Congyue narrowed his eyes and lowered his voice, replying, “There are people behind us.” Bai Xun’s body stiffened. Matt quickly swiped his card for the elevator and stood silently in the corner with the folded wheelchair.
Only when they were back in the ward did Yu Congyue gently place him on the bed. Once he was sure Bai Xun was settled, he took out a wet wipe and began cleaning Bai Xun’s hands.
“Brother, do you know what he wanted?” Bai Xun tried to take the wipe, but Yu Congyue’s grip was firmer, so he let it go.
“What did he want? Accounting details? Tax records?” Yu Congyue noticed the wet red ink on Bai Xun’s thumb. “He made you sign an agreement?”
“Close. He wanted the reporting drafts for this quarter and the adjustment records for the tariff documents.” Bai Xun shrugged. “He made me sign a voluntary commitment letter. Luckily, I was smart—with proof of his threats, no matter how many I sign, they’re useless.”
Bai Xun took off the earring bug from his right ear and handed it carefully to Matt, who had just walked in. “The wheelchair was left to the side, so the audio might not be as clear as this. Good thing we had a backup.”
After Matt left, only the two of them remained. Yu Congyue adjusted the pillow for Bai Xun’s leg and placed a thermos of warm dried-squid and bone soup in front of him.
“Drink some soup first. Dinner will be sent up later.”
“Thanks, Brother.” Bai Xun had been busy and was finally feeling hungry. The satisfaction of the savory soup made him unable to stop his spoon.
“Xiaobai, you actually didn’t have to sign that agreement.” Yu Congyue remained silent until the soup was finished, finally looking at Bai Xun with a trace of subtle anxiety.
“I thought about telling him off directly, but that would just be a threat charge. If we don’t land a substantial blow, he’ll just keep coming back.” Bai Xun wiped his mouth and yawned, leaning back on a lavender pillow. “Better to give him a ‘weakness’ than stay on the defensive. I’m not sure about the specifics; we’ll have to see what the legal and finance teams suggest.”
“You shouldn’t have been dragged into this. I’m sorry, Xiaobai.” Yu Congyue gripped the thermos slightly tighter, his gaze lingering on Bai Xun’s cast.
“Brother, don’t say that. Your business is my business. You treat me like family; how could I stand by and do nothing?”
Bai Xun took a deep breath, still savoring the soup. He patted the bedsheets before suddenly remembering something and sitting up straight.
“Brother, I think your Grand-uncle wants to ruin your reputation as well as your company.”
Yu Congyue blinked. “What?”
“That letter he made me write… he made me write that you were my boyfriend.” Bai Xun frowned, analyzing the intent. “Brother, do you think he wants to leak fake news about you being in a relationship to ruin your fan base? That’s so underhanded, right? Brother? …Brother?”
Receiving no reply, Bai Xun turned to see Yu Congyue staring at him blankly, looking like a stunned wooden chicken.
Oh no, his ears are turning red. He must be furious.
Yu Congyue was at a stable peak in his career. Bai Xun had checked; the man had said in interviews he wouldn’t hide a relationship, yet not a single piece of gossip had ever surfaced. Yu Shengguang is truly insidious, trying to drag him down like this.
Bai Xun was certain of this, and his disgust grew. He placed a hand on Yu Congyue’s shoulder and looked firmly into his eyes. “Don’t be angry, Brother. We’ll find a way. I’ll be with you.”
“…Xiaobai, actually…” Yu Congyue’s Adam’s apple bobbed. “What if… what if I actually was in a relationship one day?”
“If you were… then you must really love my future sister-in-law.”
“How so?” Yu Congyue looked intrigued.
Bai Xun pursed his lips and imagined the scenario. For some reason, the thought of Yu Congyue having a legal partner and needing to distance himself made his chest feel tight. His tone became inadvertently awkward.
“Well, you’re excellent, gentle, and careful. You’re handsome and capable. Whoever you love and want to be with must be someone equally excellent, or someone who shares a soul with you…”
By the end, Bai Xun’s throat felt tight. Seeing Yu Congyue nod in agreement, that strange emotion expanded, making it hard to breathe.
How weird.
Before he could process this unfamiliar feeling, Matt appeared at the door like a savior.
“President Yu, the recording has been backed up and notarized. Tracy has gathered the legal and finance teams. There’s a meeting at 3 PM in the 32nd-floor conference room. Does that work for you?”
Matt laid out the dinner—two meat dishes, two vegetables, all of Bai Xun’s favorites.
“Yes. Tell them to prepare the documents. Has Big Brother been told?” Yu Congyue looked at Matt.
“Chairman Yu already knows. He’ll be bringing his team to the meeting as well.”
…
Yu Congyue transitioned into work mode quickly. After giving instructions, he turned back to Bai Xun.
“What’s wrong? Does the food taste off?”
Bai Xun, usually the most enthusiastic about eating, was listlessly counting grains of rice with his chopsticks. “No, it’s good. I’m just a bit full from the soup. And sleepy.”
His voice was muffled. The pain from his leg, which had been bearable, suddenly felt much more prominent. He still couldn’t understand the root of that abnormal emotion.
In his original world, he had no family support. He spent his time studying or working part-time. Aside from bosses and random group project members, he had no social life. It was only in this world that he had made his first true “best friend.” He didn’t know how normal friends interacted; he only knew people online said true friends would sacrifice anything for each other.
Aren’t Brother Yu and I exactly like that?
After a listless meal, he saw off Yu Congyue, who kept trying to stay a little longer. He pulled out his phone, registered a burner account, and—after ensuring his identity was hidden—posted on a social app:
