Chapter 43: Rich People Are Just Capricious
Bai Xun’s mind went blank. He stumbled over his words for a while before regaining his senses, but since he hadn’t thought of an explanation yet, he had to resort to his last-ditch tactic.
He took a deep breath, grabbed Yu Congyue’s right hand, and looked up pitifully from below at that face, which was slightly cold with indignation. Pursing his lips to organize his wording, he whispered, “Brother, don’t be angry. Sit down and calm down first, I have a reason…”
He had gambled correctly.
Yu Congyue’s expression softened visibly. He used his other hand to support his forehead, avoiding the gaze that made him feel dazed. After holding out for a full five seconds, he finally surrendered. He let out a long sigh, sat on the chair by the bed as if accepting his fate, sighed again, and reached out to give Bai Xun’s head a heavy rub.
“Alright. Tell me, what is the reason?”
Bai Xun enjoyed the sensation of the warm palm. He instinctively leaned his head closer before stammering, “The things your Grand-uncle told me about you… though they sounded fake, the evidence looked quite legitimate. I think he might still be hiding something he hasn’t released yet.”
He raised his hand to grasp Yu Congyue’s wrist, guiding it to the base of his other ear which hadn’t been rubbed yet, signaling that he could touch there too.
“Now you’re ordering me around?” Yu Congyue said it, but his movements were perfectly cooperative.
“Nobody rubs my head as well as you do, Brother. Besides, I’m a patient right now. Have some sympathy, Brother, have some sympathy.”
Bai Xun turned on his side, tucked a pillow under his head, squinted his eyes, and continued to push his luck lazily.
“You remember you’re a patient? Why didn’t you think of that when you were planning to contact him privately?”
Thinking about the recording and Bai Xun’s plan, Yu Congyue couldn’t bring himself to be truly angry. He could only “retaliate” by kneading the base of the ear a bit harder with his knuckles.
“I just wanted to see what exactly he wanted me to do. It’s easy to dodge a spear in the open but hard to avoid an arrow in the dark. If I just refused abruptly, there’s no telling what dirty tricks he’d pull. Better to feign defection and at least gather some evidence… ah…”
As Bai Xun talked, the base of his beast ears was pinched simultaneously. As the finger pads rubbed in a clockwise motion, a surge of pleasure like an electric current shot from his neck through his whole body. The tail pressed behind his back twitched restlessly. Realizing he was losing his composure after a few whimpers, he quickly shut his mouth and coughed twice, trying to move his head away inconspicuously.
Yu Congyue didn’t give him the chance. Acting as if he hadn’t noticed the pup’s tense body at all, he increased the pressure of the massage.
“Brother, Brother, I was wrong… mmm… but I really wanted to help you… Brother, the ear, the leg, leg, leg, hiss…”
That tingling sensation, like ants crawling on him, went straight to his head. He instinctively curled up, but that yanked his elevated leg. The sensory impact of combined pain and pleasure made him start babbling nonsense.
“This matter is still up for debate, Xiaobai. I really don’t want to see the same thing happen twice.”
As soon as Yu Congyue heard him cry out in pain, he let go immediately and readjusted the pillow for him.
“Brother, the leg thing was an act of God. I’ll only act if I can ensure my safety.”
Bai Xun took several deep breaths to calm his racing heart. Wiping away the physiological tears from the corners of his eyes, he made a solemn promise, only quieting down temporarily after receiving a “we’ll see” response.
…
Just as Bai Xun was playing with his phone and munching on an apple peeled by Yu Congyue, there was another commotion outside the ward.
A second later, several people tied up tightly stumbled into the room.
“Cough, cough, cough…” Bai Xun had never seen such a scene. Startled, he choked on a piece of apple, his face turning red before he could catch his breath.
“I told you to handle things. This is how you solve it?” Yu Congyue hurriedly patted his back to help him breathe, looking quite perplexed at Yu Congji, who strolled in followed by two special assistants.
“This isn’t my fault. We traced the signal to the vicinity. Who knew their car was parked right in the underground garage? It was like shooting fish in a barrel.” Yu Congji glanced at the three people on the floor who didn’t dare make a sound and shook his head. “They kept saying the most dangerous place is the safest. Their car was the most conspicuous one in the entire B3 level. Truly beyond stupid.”
He Shian stepped forward to block one of them who was trying to worm their way up. Matt handed the materials he’d just collected to Yu Congyue. Bai Xun poked his head out to scan them; it looked like they were the parts that hadn’t been sent out yet.
“I understand the logic, but…” Bai Xun gestured with a troubled expression. “Is it really okay to do this in the hospital?”
“Sis—Xiaobai, this hospital belongs to our family. Who’s going to say anything?” Yu Congji snorted. After closing the door, he dragged a chair over to sit in front of the three. He exchanged a look with He Shian, and the leader was hauled up from the floor by the assistant with one hand.
Yu Congji narrowed his eyes at the man, casually ripped off the duct tape used to seal his mouth, and spoke calmly at the panicked face: “I ask, you answer. Do you understand?”
The man nodded repeatedly, his body trembling uncontrollably. The moment He Shian let go, his legs went weak and he slumped to the floor.
“Brother… Congji looks like he has some basic training in this…”
Bai Xun took a sip of water, watching with concern as Yu Congji expertly interrogated them, while He Shian stood by silently recording and occasionally intimidating the other two with a stare. For the first time, he felt that things weren’t as simple as his stereotypes suggested, but given the current situation, he felt something was missing.
In the gap of his pondering, Yu Congji finished the process in under 15 minutes. The trio spilled everything, even proactively defecting by handing over all communication devices and account permissions. Under Yu Congji’s skeptical gaze, they let out a “Wah” and started crying.
“I’m just a worker! Let me go, I won’t say a word, waaaaah…”
Bai Xun suddenly felt the vibe was right. This was the style of a dark syndicate: interrogate, “dispose” of them, and pull up the roots to eliminate future trouble. He shuddered.
“What’s wrong, Xiaobai? Are you cold?” Yu Congyue was used to this. Seeing Bai Xun shiver, he got up to close the ventilation window.
“Brother, after all, it’s three people… Isn’t Congji a bit… too aggressive?” His Adam’s apple bobbed. He decided to try and guide the “wayward youth” to prevent more uncontrollable scenes.
“It’s easier to get things done on our own turf. They’ve confessed; you don’t need to worry, Xiaobai. He knows what he’s doing.” Yu Congyue thought Bai Xun was talking about the interrogation itself and continued looking at the materials unconcernedly.
Bai Xun’s pupils dilated. Seeing Yu Congyue’s lack of surprise, he sucked in a cold breath. Even Matt didn’t seem to take it to heart. Could it be… they were already used to “this kind of thing”?
It made sense. The Yu Group was worth tens of billions; in this city, they practically covered the sky with one hand. According to exaggerated dramas, making a few people disappear without a sound would be all too easy.
But these were three human lives. He couldn’t just watch illegal things happen.
Dammit… On one hand was the brother he valued as his life, and on the other were morals and boundaries. Bai Xun scratched his hair anxiously. Just as he was about to speak in a roundabout way, Yu Congji spoke up.
“You can leave once you sign the non-disclosure agreement. Are we clear on what should and shouldn’t be said?”
“Yes, yes, understood. Thank you, Little President Yu! Thank you, President Yu!”
“Huh? You’re just letting them go like that?” Bai Xun blurted out instinctively.
“Of course. Illegal detention is a crime, Xiaobai. That’s not acceptable.” Yu Congji cracked his neck, took a deep breath, and stood up, seriously lecturing Bai Xun on the law.
Being gazed at by Yu Congji’s clear eyes, Bai Xun felt a surge of guilt for misjudging him.
“It’s mainly that it’s not as convenient as it was a few years ago,” Yu Congji shook his head, the regret in his voice exceptionally obvious.
Bai Xun’s guilt vanished instantly. He looked at him, speechless. This is still the style of a dark syndicate!
“In the past, you could just give some cash for a bribe and get people with one phone call. Now you have to worry about their phones being monitored. Sigh, technology moves too fast.” Yu Congji saw Bai Xun’s shifting expressions and asked curiously, “What’s wrong, Xiaobai?”
“…Then why did you tie them up if you were just bribing them?” Bai Xun frowned and asked the question he’d been wanting to ask. “This looks like Ma—never mind.”
“Oh, they tried to run. Catching them is a hassle. They’re more honest when tied up.”
“Fine. You win.”
Hearing that habitual tone and realizing that zero people were actually harmed, Bai Xun simply let it go. There must be a reason they chose to do this, and it was pointless for him to worry.
“So, what do you want for lunch?” Yu Congyue, who had been watching the show, sent the organized files to Matt and checked the time. Estimating it was Bai Xun’s mealtime, he timely shifted the topic.
“Second Brother! I want the Steam Pot Chicken from the shop downstairs!” Yu Congji was the first to raise his hand, but received no response from his brother.
“What about you, Xiaobai?” Yu Congyue looked at him.
“I’m fine with anything. Congji, do you mean that Yunnan is on the fourth floor of the mall?”
At the mention of food, Bai Xun quickly put the previous issues out of his mind. Hearing “Steam Pot Chicken” reminded him of the aroma he could smell through the door when he wandered downstairs before. He swallowed hard.
“Yes, yes! But it’s not easy to pack for takeout; that kind of thing needs to be eaten fresh. Second Brother, it should be fine if Xiaobai sneaks out for a bit at noon, right?”
“Wait for the doctor to see. It’s only the second day; he shouldn’t be getting out of bed.” Yu Congyue pressed the call bell. Soon, the doctor and two nurses rushed in.
After the check-up, although he was recovering well, the doctor still advised against leaving the bed. He’d have to wait at least three or four days before considering going out.
“It’s fine, we can eat it in a few days. The shop isn’t going anywhere.” Bai Xun waved it off. He was thinking about what else to eat when he saw Yu Congyue say something to Matt. Matt turned and ran out.
“Where’s he going?”
“Since you can’t go there, I’ll have the chef from that shop cook it in the canteen downstairs.” Yu Congyue spoke a sentence so calm it nearly broke Bai Xun’s mental defenses.
“Huh? Would the owner agree to that?” Although he had a suspicion, Bai Xun still asked.
“As long as the money is right. Based on their best daily turnover, it won’t exceed 100,000. Just pay that amount. The chef can go back to work after finishing; he doesn’t lose out no matter how you calculate it.”
100,000.
Bai Xun’s eyes went a bit hollow. With a trembling hand, he opened that shop’s delivery page. The most expensive “Ultra Deluxe Steam Pot Chicken” in the whole store was only 385 yuan. Even with delivery fees, it wouldn’t exceed 400.
Fine, whatever. Consider it contributing to economic development.
Wait? Why didn’t he see a group-buy price?
Bai Xun refreshed the interface. Under the major delivery platforms and store promotions, he only saw coupons, not group-buy options. The few group-buys available were mostly for bulk goods; there were almost none for catering or supermarkets.
Isn’t this just a free opportunity for him to make money?
“I have a business idea. Do you guys want to hear it?”
