Chapter 4: Eating… Eating Something Good
The fur on Bai Xun’s tail stood straight up from the fright. He turned to see a girl holding a dog on a leash jogging toward him, apologizing while comparing his face to her phone screen.
“It really is you! Xiao Bai, you look much better in person than in the videos. Can we take a photo?”
“Ah, thank you, thank you.” Bai Xun leaned in for the photo. Just as he was wondering how he could be recognized with his current follower count, the girl seemed to read his mind and showed him a livestream highlight clip on her phone.
“Your stream last night was seriously too cute! I even placed an order for my baby here. Hehe, I won’t bother you further. Good luck with everything!”
She dashed off with her dog as quickly as she’d arrived. Bai Xun, however, was frozen, staring at the like count on that clip.
Suspecting he had misread it, he pulled out his own phone. The top trending video was that very highlight—with a staggering three million likes. His follower count had exploded to nearly 100,000 overnight.
Wait, I just ate some dog food. How did I blow up like this?
There was even a new suggested search tag: #HowBigAMessCanYouMakeOnDayOne?
“Well, the tag isn’t lying,” he muttered, nodding to himself. He tapped on the comments and saw a pinned top comment that made his heart skip a beat.
[East Sea Fish Overlord]: Xiao Bai, stop eating dog food. I’ll take you out for something better when there’s a chance. @XiaoBaiLifeGuide
East Sea Fish Overlord?
He clicked the profile. The bio clearly read: “Yu Congyue’s Daily Account” with nearly eight million followers. He scrolled through a few videos—one was of flowers, another of the weather. He didn’t even show his face, yet each had over a million likes.
Is this the power of a top-tier star…?
Not daring to be slow, he followed the account and replied immediately.
[XiaoBaiLifeGuide]: AAAAAH! Okay, Teacher Yu!!! Waiting to be fed, hehe!!!
He hit send with a few cheering emojis. He thought it was just a polite social media exchange, but before he could even lock his screen, a notification popped up.
[@East Sea Fish Overlord followed you back. You can now start a chat!]
He had been followed back. By a red-hot, A-list celebrity.
…
The Golden Opportunity
[XiaoBaiLifeGuide]: Hello, Teacher Yu, I’m Bai Xun. It’s truly an honor to be followed back by you! [East Sea Fish Overlord]: Don’t be nervous, Xiao Bai. Your new series is very creative, and your livestream energy was surprising. I’m reaching out because of a collaboration. Would it be convenient to exchange contact info?
Bai Xun’s brain hit a “404 Not Found” error. He shot back a “Yes!” and soon added Yu Congyue on WeChat.
[Yu Congyue]: Haha, you’re too kind. Wooge is a brand under one of our subsidiaries. They’re looking for a beastman streamer for a new round of endorsements. I saw the stream last night and thought you’d be perfect. If you’re interested, I can have my assistant contact your team. [AA Wealth-Inviting Xiao Bai]: It’s my honor, Teacher Yu! I’ll give it my all! [Yu Congyue]: We can start the formal talk tomorrow. Do you have plans tomorrow night? I did say I’d take you for a good meal. It’s not good to lie to a puppy. [AA Wealth-Inviting Xiao Bai]: No plans, Brother! [Yu Congyue]: Great. See you near your company at 6:00 PM tomorrow? Any allergies? [AA Wealth-Inviting Xiao Bai]: None! I can eat anything! See you tomorrow, Brother!
Bai Xun was moved to tears. Yu Congyue was handsome, providing work, and buying him dinner. Whatever his motives, Bai Xun decided right then and there that this was his new “Big Brother.”
On the other side, Yu Congyue sneezed. He didn’t mind the “Brother” title; in fact, imagining the expression on Bai Xun’s face as he typed it made his lips curl into a smile.
“I think he’s a great fit for Wooge’s new line. Tracy, contact their business team,” Yu Congyue instructed. “Got it. Meeting tomorrow?” “Make it tomorrow afternoon. Also, book a window seat at Lika for 7:00 PM.”
…
The Meeting of the Minds
By the next afternoon, the MCN’s business team was in a frenzy. The supervisor’s impression of Bai Xun had shifted from “pretentious” to “secretly legendary.” They realized he hadn’t refused “adult” content out of pride, but because he was playing in a much higher league.
Bai Xun arrived at the office in a new, decent outfit, his glasses replaced by contacts. The supervisor barely recognized him.
In the conference room, Bai Xun was mesmerized by Yu Congyue. He was even more stunning in person than on screen. Yu Congyue, however, was the one who froze. His eyes locked onto Bai Xun’s face and stayed there. Adam’s apple bobbed, and for a moment, he couldn’t even find his voice.
Tracy had to pat him on the back to snap him out of it.
“Teacher Yu, Xiao Bai is here. Shall we discuss the details?” the manager asked, ushering Bai Xun into the seat right next to Yu Congyue.
As he sat down, a faint, calming scent drifted from Yu Congyue. The terms Tracy presented were jaw-dropping. “Brand Ambassador” and “Chief Experience Officer.” Two offline events a year, two livestreams a month. A marketing budget of 50,000 yuan per video. A base commission of 600,000 yuan a year, paid quarterly—with the first quarter paid upfront upon signing.
The room was silent. For a creator of Bai Xun’s current size, these were T0-level perks. He was being given absolute creative freedom. Every executive in the room stared at Bai Xun, who felt a bit creeped out by the intense gaze.
“If there’s nothing else, we’ll head to dinner. Tracy, handle the rest,” Yu Congyue said, putting on his mask and coat.
Bai Xun looked at his bosses, who all nodded frantically for him to follow.
…
The “Date”
“So, Brother, if you drive, won’t reporters see you?” Bai Xun asked as he buckled his seatbelt, remembering the paparazzi from his old world.
Yu Congyue laughed, starting the engine. “Don’t worry. I don’t drive this car often, and the tint is one-way. They can’t see it.”
The half-hour drive was filled with soothing music and light conversation. Bai Xun, naturally trusting of his benefactor, ended up spilling most of his life story (at least, the parts relevant to this world).
He learned that Yu Congyue was the “Second Boss” of the Yu Group, and half the entertainment industry worked under him. Yu Congyue seemed surprised that Bai Xun didn’t know these things.
“I only checked your entertainment achievements on the encyclopedia,” Bai Xun explained sheepishly.
The car came to a stop. Yu Congyue got out and, with a gentlemanly flourish, opened the door for Bai Xun.
“Let’s go. The table is ready.”
