Chapter 39: Beauty’s Tears
“It’s really all there. You just can’t feel it right now because the anesthesia hasn’t worn off. Rest assured.” Yu Congyue tucked the corner of the duvet around him, his voice carrying a hint of lingering fear.
Bai Xun felt that Yu Congyue was merely comforting him. After all, this scene was well-documented in many TV dramas: those close to the protagonist would lie about the anesthesia to prevent them from being traumatized, and then gradually guide them to accept the truth through “talk therapy.”
He forced a smile that looked more painful than crying and choked out self-consolations: “It’s… it’s okay. The disabled self-reliance niche… I can also… woo-hoo… Brother, my leg… waaaaah.”
Yu Congyue found the current Bai Xun both adorable and pitiful. He took out his phone, snapped a photo of Bai Xun’s two legs, wiped the pup’s tears with a tissue, and held the screen in front of him.
“Ah… they really are still there. Waaaaah, Brother, my legs are still there, waaaaah!”
Bai Xun started howling again, though this time it was more out of the relief of having survived a catastrophe.
“What’s wrong? Why is Xiaobai crying again?” Yu Congji poked his head in from the doorway. Shian, carrying a fruit basket, knocked and greeted them before following the doctor into the room.
Being watched by so many people in his most embarrassing state made Bai Xun want to dig a hole and bury himself. He flushed a deep crimson from his ears down to his neck. He turned his head with effort, casting a pleading look toward Yu Congyue.
“Xiaobai just woke up; it seems his legs still hurt a bit.” Yu Congyue received the signal and smoothly fabricated a reasonable excuse without changing his expression.
“This situation is normal, don’t be nervous.” The doctor walked to the bedside to check his status and noted something on a chart. “Young people have a fast metabolism, and coupled with the side effects of forcibly breaking the atavism state, it won’t hurt in a little while. If the pain is truly unbearable, don’t try to tough it out; we can add a painkiller injection.”
“I’m fine, doctor. It doesn’t hurt now,” Bai Xun said weakly, raising a hand, only to be met with the doctor’s “seen-it-all-before” expression.
“I understand young people care about their dignity, but if it hurts, you must say so. Dignity isn’t more important than health. Family members should pay close attention as well.” The doctor tucked away his clipboard, spoke a few more words to Yu Congyue—who was standing closest—and then left the ward.
“Family member” Yu Congyue accepted the title naturally. After seeing the doctor out, he placed a pillow behind Bai Xun’s back and took a chair to sit by his side, observing his condition.
Bai Xun wanted to find a topic to move past the embarrassing misunderstanding, but before he could speak, he heard a crisp crunch from the side.
“I say… you’re visiting a patient, so how are you the one eating first?” Suppressing his dizziness, Bai Xun slowly turned his head. He saw He Shian peeling an apple for Yu Congji, even slicing it into bite-sized pieces and feeding them to him. Unsurprisingly, the apple came from the basket they had brought.
“I’m tasting it for you. In case it’s not good, consider it my good deed for the day.” Yu Congji didn’t look guilty at all. As he opened his mouth to take the apple from He Shian, he leaned in and inconspicuously kissed the man’s knuckle.
The movement was so fast Bai Xun almost thought it was an illusion—until he saw He Shian’s high-standing rabbit ears suddenly flatten against the back of his head. He was now certain Yu Congji was indeed flirting with his special assistant.
“You really seem to like rabbits,” Bai Xun concluded after frowning over the thought for a long time.
Yu Congyue had been focused on the medical instructions and hadn’t noticed the subtle interaction. Hearing this, he looked up at Yu Congji, whose hand was resting on the assistant’s waist. He said coldly, “Done bothering Qiu You, so now you’re bothering Assistant He?”
“Brother, look at how you’re talking. Isn’t it normal for Shian and me to have a good relationship?” Yu Congji said, taking the opportunity to squeeze the rabbit tail that was mostly hidden by the hem of his suit jacket. “We’ve known each other for so many years; how could it be the same? We’re life-and-death companions, right, Shian?”
Shian’s Adam’s apple moved slightly. He wiped the apple juice from his hands with a tissue, adjusted his glasses, and did not stop the tail-fiddling. He nodded in silent agreement.
“You spoil him too much.” Yu Congyue knew He Shian was reliable, so he stopped meddling. He stood up to pour a cup of warm water for Bai Xun, using a clean cotton swab to moisten his lips. Before he could say more, Matt, who had been handling the admission paperwork, pushed open the door. Seeing Bai Xun awake, he let out a long breath of relief.
“Xiaobai, you’re awake! The police want to come by to get a more detailed statement. Is it convenient now, or should we reschedule?”
“It’s convenient.” “Rest a bit longer.”
Yu Congyue and Bai Xun’s voices rang out simultaneously.
Facing Yu Congyue’s disapproving expression, Bai Xun sighed and instinctively looked at his propped-up legs. “The sooner we do the statement, the sooner the suspect can be dealt with. Because of him, my filming schedule is almost ruined, and your budget increased. Brother, I won’t let anyone get away with stopping us from making money.”
Because of that damn spy, he had to postpone all the previously negotiated advertisers. With a broken leg, he couldn’t shoot outdoors and wouldn’t be able to walk for two or three months. The internet moves fast; there was no guarantee that more competitors wouldn’t pop up in the meantime. He now had to set aside his finished scripts and find a new path…
He forced himself to sit up, a flicker of murderous intent in his eyes. He glared in a certain direction, his weak hands clenching instinctively in anger—he didn’t even notice the blood backflowing into the IV tube.
“Alright, alright, we’ll let you do the statement. Relax your hand, Xiaobai, you’re backflowing.” Yu Congyue sensed the intense fury in the fragmented thoughts he overheard. Seeing that the pup was spirited enough, he gave up on dissuading him.
Once the response was confirmed, the police were efficient, appearing in the ward thirty minutes later. For the sake of privacy, everyone except Bai Xun was asked to leave.
“Hello, I am Liao Xun from the Wuxi Road Station, and this is my colleague Li Qingyi. These are our credentials.” Officer Liao leaned in to show his ID. “Today is a preliminary inquiry into the incident that occurred at 10:00 AM in the stairwell of the 32nd floor of the Yu Group’s Wuxi branch. The entire process will be recorded to ensure the rights of both parties. Please raise any issues immediately and tell us the truth. Any questions?”
Bai Xun signaled that he understood and was ready.
“Good. This is the suspect’s ID badge. The holder’s name is Wang Zhiyong, a P9-level financial consultant for Yu Congyue’s studio. Did you know him before?” Officer Liao produced the badge in a witness bag.
“No. I don’t know many people in the studio.” Bai Xun looked at the honest-looking smile in the ID photo; it was hard to connect it with the vicious face from the stairwell.
“How did he recognize you at the time? Did he say your name or do anything else?”
“My work involves short videos. Plus, due to some recent issues, I had to explain things while I was in my atavism period and appeared in that form on camera. I believe he saw that video, which is why he recognized me immediately when he grabbed me.”
“Grabbed you? So you were attacked by Wang Zhiyong while in your original animal form, correct? Did you change back into a Beastman during the attack?”
“No. I was in a hurry to tell Brother Yu… I mean, Yu Congyue. They don’t have phones in the meeting. I only changed back when they paused the meeting because I was so emotional.”
“Understood. Last confirmation: are you certain this ID badge was snatched from his person? Is there any chance it was a mistake?”
“I’m certain. Look at the tooth marks.” Though Bai Xun couldn’t move much, he pointed out two small indentations near the clip of the badge. “I bit that.”
“Very well, Mr. Bai. Rest well. We will continue the investigation into Wang Zhiyong and follow up with new developments. You may raise your demands at any time.”
As Officer Li turned off the recorder, Yu Congyue pushed open the door with a cold face, followed by a man in a suit and glasses. Yu Congyue glanced at the witness bag. “Officers, please wait a moment.”
“Mr. Yu, is there something else? The statement is finished.”
“I overheard part of the statement outside. I want to emphasize that Wang Zhiyong knew Bai Xun was in his atavism period. Legally, such individuals are classified as persons with limited civil capacity, similar to minors or seniors over sixty. Despite this, he intentionally threw him to the ground, causing fractures in both legs.”
The lawyer standing beside him added, “I am the legal representative for this case; you may call me Lawyer Zhang. Our client’s demand is to file a case for intentional injury and reserve the right to pursue incidental damages.”
The two officers exchanged looks and turned to Yu Congyue. Their expressions were significantly more serious than before.
“We will fully cooperate with the police, but we expect the suspect to be punished to the full extent of the law. We do not accept any form of mediation or private settlement. Please understand.” Lawyer Zhang handed over his card.
Officer Liao took the card, stated they would proceed accordingly, and hurried out of the ward.
Bai Xun clearly felt Yu Congyue’s anger. He licked his dry lips and softened his voice to change the subject: “Brother… I’m a bit hungry…”
Yu Congyue took a thermal container from Matt, scooped out half a spoonful of millet porridge, blew on it to cool it, and brought it to the pup’s lips. His face still looked quite angry.
After feeding him a few spoonfuls in silence, Bai Xun thought for a moment and spoke up again: “Where’s Congji? I thought I saw him earlier.”
“Wang Zhiyong confessed to some things. Congji went with Big Brother to settle them.” Yu Congyue wiped the pup’s mouth with a tissue. His voice was more muffled than usual, sounding slightly nasal.
Bai Xun couldn’t stand seeing him like this. He endured the pain in his leg and joked with a smile, “Hey, we large-breed dogs are thick-skinned. Don’t be like this, Brother, I’m doing great…”
“Bai Xun.” Yu Congyue interrupted him, his hand holding the spoon trembling. “You almost died, do you know that? If Wang Zhiyong hadn’t been standing by the edge of the stairs, if you hadn’t happened to step on the railing to get enough leverage to bite him… a fall from that height would have left you dead or crippled.”
This was the first time Yu Congyue had called him by his full name. Bai Xun felt inexplicably guilty. He gave a forced laugh and muttered, “Hey, my luck has always been pretty good,” only to see Yu Congyue’s eyes instantly turn red, with tears threatening to fall.
Wow, he’s even handsome when he cries. That was Bai Xun’s first thought.
Wait… wait a second. Why is Brother crying?
