Chapter 36: Atavism 10.0
“Was that He Shian who just dropped you off?” Yu Congyue glanced at the obviously guilty Yu Congji. When he had stood up earlier, one look was all it took to recognize the person in the car.
He was quite at ease with He Shian. When he was hiring a special assistant for Yu Congji, he screened candidates through several rounds at headquarters before finally settling on him. He Shian had passed every assessment perfectly and hadn’t made a single mistake during his tenure. Sometimes, Yu Congyue and his eldest brother even wondered if the man was a robot.
“Uh, yeah, it was him.” Yu Congji downed his wine in one gulp, his expression shifting noticeably at the mention of that name.
Ding-dong—
The doorbell rang. Yu Congyue got up, checked the video intercom, and opened the door.
“Assistant He?”
“Hello, President Yu. Little President Yu left his scarf and phone in the car.” He Shian stood at the door holding the neatly folded scarf and a phone that was vibrating incessantly with new notifications.
Hearing this, Yu Congji scrambled to his feet, lunged forward to squeeze past his brother, and grabbed He Shian’s wrist. He stuttered through a stiff, lingering smile for a while before suddenly glancing in a certain direction and letting out a long sigh of relief.
“Um, thanks for making another trip. Go on back now, see you tomorrow.”
He Shian didn’t have much of a reaction. He nodded in farewell and turned to leave, leaving Yu Congji standing by the door, dazed, staring at his departing back.
When Congji finally returned to the table, he was met with a synchronized row of inquisitive gazes.
“Gosh, what are you looking at me for? Can’t a guy be sad after a breakup?” Yu Congji stood by his chair, seemingly lost in thought. After an internal struggle, he muttered, “I have some things to handle, let’s catch up next time,” before making a quick phone call and rushing out the door again.
“Is he really okay?” Zhu Xu licked his paw to smooth his fur and glanced toward the door.
“He should be fine. I’ll check on him later. Let’s eat first.” Yu Congyue peeled a shrimp for Bai Xun, wiped his hands, and confirmed via GPS that Congji was driving toward a bar before letting the matter drop.
The meal wasn’t affected by these interludes. Once Bai Xun had food, he quickly tossed his gossip-hungry thoughts to the back of his mind. The atmosphere at the table was exceptionally harmonious.
After dinner, Bai Xun and the two “little beans” strolled along the private beach. Zhu Xu, who didn’t like moving much, curled up on a terrace chair to watch them.
Left alone in the living room for tea, the two brothers spoke. Yu Congming rubbed the rim of his teacup and sighed softly. “The word from Secretary Zhu in the Real Estate department is that our grand-uncle and a few shareholders haven’t been behaving lately. Tomorrow’s board meeting might not go smoothly.”
Yu Congyue had heard rumors, but he couldn’t grasp their initial motive. “What are they actually after? Excluding the revenue from clean energy and overseas e-commerce, the regular dividends should be enough to sustain them for a long time.”
“The profit cycles for those two sectors are too long for them. How can they compare to the high margins of your entertainment division?” Yu Congming crossed his legs, his gaze drifting out the window. “Have you forgotten the Q1 meeting? He proposed putting a Vice President under you. Everyone knows that was his wife’s relative.”
“Human greed is like a snake trying to swallow an elephant,” Yu Congyue sneered, following his brother’s gaze to Bai Xun, who was running wildly on the sand.
He wasn’t ignorant of his grand-uncle’s methods. Years ago, when past issues from the company’s early days were reported, the man had managed to get a subordinate of over ten years to willingly take the fall. If he truly wanted to interfere with other departments, his tactics wouldn’t be honorable.
“Xiaoji has already found some key evidence. Corporate embezzlement and commercial bribery—they won’t be able to escape those two charges.” Yu Congming set down his teacup, hesitating before speaking again. “Xiaobai is a good kid, but he’s too naive. Keep a close eye on him until this is settled.”
“I know, Brother. Thank you.”
“We’re family, no need for thanks.” Yu Congming stood up, walked outside to pick up the yawning Zhu Xu, and called the children to head home.
Yu Congyue wanted to see them out, but he was stopped.
“It’s so close, no need. You two should get some rest early as well.” Yu Congming knelt down and gestured for Bai Xun to come over. He patted the pup’s head and pulled a substantial red envelope from his pocket, stuffing it into the pocket on the back of Bai Xun’s vest. “A meeting gift. I didn’t prepare much, just a small token.”
…
“It’s from Big Brother, just keep it. He likes you quite a bit.” Yu Congyue carried the dumbfounded Bai Xun back into the living room, closed the door, removed his vest, and placed the red envelope on the rug.
Bai Xun shook his head. Just by judging the thickness, he knew this envelope was no joke. But with the Mother’s gift as a precedent, he wasn’t as embarrassed this time. He shifted his paws sheepishly on the rug before nudging the envelope with his nose.
Yu Congyue helped him open it. A gold bar slid out from a stack of cash.
“Awoo?” Bai Xun yelped and jumped back two steps, losing his balance and landing on his butt. His front paws dangled in the air as his little button eyes blinked for a long time, finally processing the “gold content” of Yu Congming’s “small token.”
What had he done to deserve this? First, he had Yu Congyue, a beautiful and wealthy “Gold Master” brother willing to feed him, and now every member of the family was practically an angel…
“Little money-grubber,” Yu Congyue laughed and packed it away for him. He carried Bai Xun to his room and expertly found the wardrobe where he had hidden the last red envelope. “I’ll put it here for you. Don’t forget it later.”
Bai Xun was so moved he almost cried. He rested his paw on Yu Congyue’s hand and nodded firmly with a determined gaze.
Brother treats me like family, so I will protect him with my life for the rest of my days!
Yu Congyue heard the vague heartbeats of thought again—words like “family” and “rest of my days.”
Bai Xun wants to be a family with me?
He solemnly squeezed Bai Xun’s paw, his resolve to protect him hardening. He would never allow his grand-uncle’s schemes to hurt him in the slightest.
…
At 8:00 AM the next morning, Yu Congyue was already in his office with a bleary-eyed Bai Xun.
Originally, Yu Congyue wanted him to sleep in, but he couldn’t feel at ease leaving the dog home alone. After all, with short limbs, doing anything was inconvenient, so he brought him along.
“Xiaobai, sleep a bit more. When you wake up, just press this button.”
Yu Congyue pulled the curtains in the inner rest area. Seeing Bai Xun yawn, roll over, and fall back asleep, he gently stroked the furry head, placed a call button by the pillow, and quietly closed the door.
“Matt, when Xiaobai wakes up, make sure he eats these.” He took a small box of portioned supplements and a bag of freeze-dried treats from his bag. “The fish oil is a bit smelly; if he won’t take it, give him the freeze-dried deep-sea fish. He must take the chondroitin and calcium; puppies at his stage can’t be calcium deficient. I asked Tracy to buy some blueberries and raspberries on her way in, remember to let him eat them…”
Matt took rapid notes in his little book. After listening to his boss talk non-stop for five or six minutes, he nodded seriously, took the supplements, and confirmed the details once more before seeing him off.
Turning around, Matt sat in the secretary’s office not far from Yu Congyue’s door. While studying the supplements, he caught sight of a person out of the corner of his eye. The person was holding a stack of documents, standing at the office door, appearing uncertain.
This was the time for the general assistants and other departments on this floor to hold their massive weekly meeting. Matt had received “special dispensation” to skip it. Anyone with a badge for this floor was at least a P7-level manager. He checked his watch; the meeting had started less than twenty minutes ago. For safety, he checked the sign-in sheet—only two employees had taken leave: one on atavism leave and one female employee.
So, who was this man?
He stood up, ready to call security.
“Who are you? What are you doing? Why aren’t you at the meeting?”
