Chapter 23: Soaring Career
The company’s desperate pleas for mercy fell on deaf ears. Not only did Bai Xun refuse to be lenient, but because of their stalling, he added a new condition to the termination agreement: “A public apology on the platform, pinned to the top of their profile for one week.”
While they were pulling their hair out, the professional prowess Bai Xun displayed in his new video once again redefined the audience’s perception of him.
TaoMai had originally given him two options: stay in the office to experience the standard project initiation process, or join the field expansion team at an offline promotional exhibition. Bai Xun resolutely chose the latter.
He knew that if “Easy Go” was to launch successfully, he first had to understand the most authentic pain points between merchants and consumers. Furthermore, he didn’t plan to take the conventional route with this video. After coordinating and receiving permission, the entire video was shot from a consumer’s perspective, using highly professional judgment to cut into topics like decision costs and resource allocation. He provided a series of quite “sharp critiques.”
In the end, he gave them a bit of “sugar,” offering TaoMai clear affirmation. After all, TaoMai was currently the only platform willing to provide venues and promotion for free to build a bridge for direct communication between businesses and consumers. For a first-time event of this type, problems were normal; his suggestions weren’t nitpicking, but constructive feedback meant to encourage improvement.
He had worried that a 28-minute long-form video might be hard for the audience to digest, but the comments and bullet chats proved his fears were groundless. Shortly after the video went live, TaoMai’s official account reposted it with the caption: [Thanks to Xiao Bai for the review! We also welcome all consumers to suggest problems they want “Xiao Tao” to solve. We will carefully check every suggestion to help us progress together!]
…
Since moving into Yu Congyue’s home, Bai Xun had been fed so frequently that his weight increased by a full seven and a half pounds (approx. 3.75kg) in just half a month. Since the platform didn’t yet have a sophisticated beauty filter system, his transformation was glaringly obvious in the videos.
[Um, is the streamer a bit chubbier than he was during the wet market episode?]
[Seems like it [Screenshot]. His face is a bit rounder, but he’s still handsome.]
Yu Congyue, on the other hand, looked exactly the same. They clearly ate the same things, yet only Bai Xun was gaining weight. Sitting on the sofa, Bai Xun looked down and pinched the slight softness on his belly, then turned gloomily to look at Yu Congyue, who was leisurely handling documents in his loungewear.
“Ge, I’m going on a diet. I’m going to fast.”
“Why are you dieting?” Yu Congyue made a mark on a data sheet, not even looking up. “You’re very healthy like this.”
“I used to have a hint of mermaid lines (V-taper), and now they’re gone.” Bai Xun stared intently at the faint lines of abdominal muscle visible under Yu Congyue’s thin shirt, hitting a cushion in frustration.
“Puppies should eat and drink well and maintain a good mood. Fasting is not advisable.”
“No! Ge, don’t say that to me while flaunting that perfect physique and jawline! I’ve decided—I’m starting by ‘eating grass’ (salads)!”
“Eating grass?” Yu Congyue submitted a document, not understanding the slang.
“Like those things you ate on set last time. I think they’re very healthy.” Bai Xun wailed at the ceiling.
“Ah, those…” Yu Congyue thought about the portions and hesitated. “But if you really want to lose weight… this is the season when hairy crabs, salmon, oysters, and botan shrimp are the fattest. My mom just had someone deliver free-range chicken and truffles the other day. Are you sure you want to miss out on this season?”
Bai Xun choked back a sob as traitorous tears (saliva) threatened to leak from the corners of his mouth.
“Then it’s settled. I’ll lose weight after I’m full.”
“Agreed. If it comes down to it, I’ll go on more walks with you.”
Just then, the internal line from TaoMai rang.
“Teacher Bai, the South District head is very impressed with your theme and the project planning for ‘Easy Go.’ She happens to be in Lushi for a business trip today and wants to know if you have time for a quick chat?”
“Today?” Bai Xun checked the time and then looked at Yu Congyue, who had put down his tablet and looked free. He muted his mic and asked, “Gee, do you want to go take a look with me?”
“Up to you. I’m fine with it.” Yu Congyue was pleasantly surprised that Bai Xun wanted to take him along. He answered calmly while his fingers flew across his phone, telling Tracy to cancel all his remaining schedules.
“I’m available. Does Teacher Fu mind if I bring someone?”
“No problem. I’ll send you the temporary access codes.”
After a quick lunch, the two arrived at the TaoMai office building at 2:00 PM. They took the internal elevator and were guided to the conference room. All the project staff from TaoMai were already there. They were visibly surprised to see Yu Congyue behind Bai Xun, but their professional training kept them from commenting.
“I’m just here to accompany him. Don’t mind me.” Yu Congyue pulled out a chair for Bai Xun and sat down, greeting the stiff-looking staff with a smile.
“Is this the South District head?” Bai Xun looked at the woman sitting in the center; her face was unfamiliar.
“Hello to you both. I am Dake, the South District head for TaoMai and the general manager for this project.”
“The ‘Easy Go’ project is being spearheaded by our South District.” She pushed a folder forward and switched the PPT to a slide with a bold title. “To keep it brief: after a week of meetings, we have a clear decision regarding your role, Teacher Bai.”
Bai Xun instinctively looked at Yu Congyue, then quickly snapped his attention back. Dake switched the slide, and Bai Xun’s name appeared prominently in the center of a flow chart.
“Given your professional ability and keen intuition for trends, we have decided to cooperate with you as the primary face of the promotion plan—the Project Ambassador.”
The members of the content team, who already knew the result, still couldn’t help but look at Bai Xun, their excitement barely contained. Bai Xun was stunned for several seconds, repeating the words as if he hadn’t fully understood: “Primary… face? Me?”
Dake nodded. “We need a primary face for the ‘Life’ category that is relatable to users and has a clean style. Your content aligns with the user preferences in the South District. Combined with your recent video performance and audience feedback, we unanimously believe that making you the lead ambassador has the greatest value for the platform’s positive development.”
Fu Yu chimed in: “If you accept, you will be a creator officially protected by the platform. With our backing, brands will be much more willing to collaborate.”
Dake closed her materials, her tone steady. “Bai Xun, we are offering you real, effective resources. If you are willing, starting tomorrow, we can provide you with a dedicated team, including a complete creative and business support system.”
Bai Xun was dazed for two seconds. After processing it all, he looked at Yu Congyue. His eyes were full of ambition, but he was also hesitant. After all, he had only just reached 500,000 followers. While he was confident in his quality, he felt the weight of this extraordinary pressure.
“Can I really do this?”
Yu Congyue knew exactly what he was worried about. With such a massive opportunity on the table, anyone would be reluctant to let it go. Besides, he believed in his Xiao Bai’s ability, and he wouldn’t allow any accidents to stop him.
Yu Congyue nodded, his eyes filled with pride. “Why not? Even if the sky falls, I’ll hold it up for you. What is there to fear?”
Bai Xun’s heart skipped a beat. He looked back at Dake, his eyes now full of yearning for the work ahead. Dake’s usually stern face broke into a rare smile. With Yu Congyue’s words, she knew she had bet on the right person.
She refocused the meeting. “Let’s confirm your next three steps.”
“One: The termination process with your old platform has been confirmed. You don’t need to communicate with that MCN directly anymore; our legal team will handle everything.”
“Two: You will have enough freedom with your content themes, though we suggest you maintain your current direction.”
“Three: We will pause business deals for one week. You need to enter a ‘content heating’ phase first. Once we stabilize your data for a week, we will start onboarding sponsorships.”
She closed her laptop. “If you have any questions, ask now.”
Bai Xun had no objections to the arrangement. He fell silent for a few seconds before asking his most honest question: “Why me?”
Dake looked at him without hesitation, her voice certain. “Because you are worth it.”
With that one sentence, all the eager gazes in the room landed on Bai Xun. Yu Congyue leaned in, whispering his congratulations.
Bai Xun’s ears turned slightly red. “Ge, I didn’t expect I was this valuable.”
Dake stood up, gathered her files, and walked over to extend her hand. “You can start getting used to it now. After all, you will receive much more recognition in the future.”
More than an encouragement, it sounded like a statement of fact—a professional’s definitive judgment on a creator whose career was about to take flight.
Bai Xun shook her hand, his palm feeling warm. His heart pounded wildly as he realized the storm that had blocked him was finally passing, and the updraft of his rising career had only just begun.
