Chapter 20: The First Kiss
Bai Xun was whisked away to an underwater restaurant owned by the Yu family.
Since Yu Congyue had called ahead, the waiter led them to a private booth. Inside, one wall was a massive panoramic viewing window; schools of sea fish swam past in rhythmic waves. The lighting was tuned to a soft, slightly ambiguous glow, and the decor—even the scent of the incense—radiated an aura of wealth.
Yu Congyue leaned forward, resting his chin on his interlaced fingers, his eyes curving with a smile as he watched Bai Xun. “The environment is nice, isn’t it? Do you have any allergies?”
Bai Xun was too busy watching the fish. He nodded and muttered, “Can we eat the ones swimming out there? That lobster swims so fast… Oh, oh! Ge, you asked about allergies? None. I can eat anything.”
He said it flippantly, but Yu Congyue laughed and shook his head. Following Bai Xun’s gaze to a particularly lively lobster, he signaled the waiter, pointed at it, gave a few instructions, and quickly placed the rest of the order.
While Bai Xun was engrossed in the fish, a diver in a wetsuit suddenly appeared with a net. At Yu Congyue’s signal, the diver swiftly scooped up two lobsters resting near the edge and vanished back into the blue.
“Wait, Ge, out there… was that…?”
“Didn’t you just say they looked delicious?” Yu Congyue propped his head up, admiring Bai Xun’s shocked expression.
“I—I was just speaking casually…”
“Fresh lobster pasta and gratin have an excellent texture.”
Bai Xun fell silent, remembering the purpose of this outing. He pivoted the topic to chat for about twenty minutes. Just as he was about to dive deeper into his “Independent IP” ideas, a business representative from TaoMai called.
“So sorry, Teacher Bai. Your script has been approved, but there are a few sections that need revision. Is it convenient to coordinate now? These projects are approved every 72 hours, and we want to catch the deadline.”
Bai Xun looked at Yu Congyue apologetically. Receiving a nod of permission, he lowered his head and began meticulously reviewing the document.
“Open up.”
Bai Xun was busy making annotations and didn’t even look up from the screen. He instinctively opened his mouth.
He received a generous bite of seafood white-sauce pasta.
The sweet, firm texture of the lobster meat wasn’t overpowered by the sauce. The white sauce wasn’t as heavy as traditional recipes; Bai Xun tasted a light, airy hint of mint mixed with basil. The pasta was cooked to a perfect al dente.
It was so delicious.
Stunned by the taste, he looked up dazed.
“It’s fine, you keep working. But these need to be eaten while they’re hot.”
Bai Xun originally wanted to decline, but TaoMai was pushing hard. He cast aside his brief sense of shame and “guiltily” continued to open his mouth for Yu Congyue’s feedings.
Thus, in the gaps between his rapid typing, he finished over half a plate of pasta, half a serving of tuna tartare, and two cheesy scallops.
Finally submitting the final draft, Bai Xun wiped the corner of his mouth. The combination of exquisite food and meeting a deadline left him in high spirits. His admiration for Yu Congyue reached its peak.
“Ge, you really are the best, best, best person I’ve ever met. Patient, humble, and so handsome. Ugh, Ge, how am I so lucky to have met you?”
Bai Xun raised his glass to toast Yu Congyue, his eyes sparkling.
“Ge, if possible, I want to spend my whole life…”
Yu Congyue’s heart skipped a beat.
“…being your best little brother!”
Yu Congyue’s hand jerked. It took all his effort not to spill the sparkling water in his glass.
He finally understood what his mother meant about letting the other person know his feelings before trying to move forward.
During this meal, both had hidden thoughts: one regretted not confessing sooner, and the other was incredibly grateful for finding a “benefactor.”
…
Upon returning, Bai Xun dived back into work. While the “Easy Go” project moved forward smoothly, the script he wrote for Yu Congyue also finished filming.
Unlike official behind-the-scenes clips, the idol’s personal life vlog received an incredible response upon release. As a special “side story” to the 100 Occupations series, Bai Xun’s presence at Yu Congyue’s house seemed perfectly logical.
He knew exactly what the fans wanted. Compared to the dignified, noble image usually seen on screen, a sleepy Yu Congyue sitting on his bed with “morning grumpiness” in a vlog was far more impactful. His face was enough to draw eyes, and his superior features even in a bare-faced state attracted many people from outside the fandom.
[My god, these features are insane.]
[Their family genes are superior. Have you guys seen his older brother and younger brother in magazines? Truly mermen.]
[Xiao Bai is so good at filming! Film more! Yue Yue is unexpectedly cute under his lens…]
[Teacher Yu, why are you a picky eater lol, though I don’t like yams either.]
[I always thought stars were aloof, I didn’t expect him to have such a normal side.]
Relying on the natural pull of this “relatable” label, Yu Congyue received several high-end home furniture endorsements looking for a mid-to-high market approach. No one complains about more exposure. The team hadn’t expected such high traffic from a low-cost shoot. After some discussion, Tracy sent Bai Xun an invitation.
[Tracy]: Xiao Bai, the studio feels you have a very sharp talent for social media and capturing trends. We’d like to invite you to be a consultant for our social media department. You don’t need to be full-time—just two meetings a month to discuss general themes.
Bai Xun, curled up in a beanbag chair checking data, looked up at Yu Congyue, who was washing fruit in the kitchen.
“Ge, Tracy-jie wants me to work at your studio?”
Yu Congyue finished washing the blueberries, dried them with a paper towel, and walked out with the plate. He nodded. “Yes, I know.”
He placed the blueberries on the coffee table within Bai Xun’s reach and handed him two tissues. “There’s no pressure, though. I’m already satisfied with the data from this time.”
“How can you say that? If I do it, I do it to the best of my ability! I’m definitely helping with this.” Bai Xun grabbed a handful of blueberries and pushed the plate toward Yu Congyue. “You eat some too, Ge.”
Bai Xun pressed the voice message button and accepted Tracy’s invitation.
[Tracy]: Great! I’ll have the boss bring the contract home tomorrow for you to sign. Monthly salary is set at 40,000 RMB after tax, plus full benefits. Remember to fill in your social security info later.
“Ge, is this too much? 40,000 a month?”
“It’s fine, take it with a clear conscience. That one video alone brought in six figures in platform traffic revenue, and that’s not counting the ads and exposure. Tracy actually thought that amount was a bit low.”
Yu Congyue wasn’t surprised; he was never stingy when it came to talent, especially when it was Bai Xun.
“Ge…” Bai Xun turned his body, resting a fist against his chest. “I’ll work like a horse for you! You are my one and only ‘Gold Master’ (Sugar Daddy/Sponsor)…”
“Gold Master?” Yu Congyue thought he had accepted Bai Xun’s misunderstanding of their relationship, but hearing a new label made him sigh.
Oh well. “Gold Master” was still better than “Big Brother.”
…
As Bai Xun expected, his teaser sparked a new round of discussion. While most comments were expectant, skeptical voices gained traction.
[The previous ones were just for fun, but this TaoMai job is clearly a formal workplace. Won’t he cause trouble for the actual workers?]
[+1. He has to deal with merchants. The blogger isn’t even in this field. Is he just going to slack off for a day?]
[Hope he doesn’t make things harder for the staff. But I’m curious to see the final content.]
This time, he didn’t reply to the comments. He simply liked a comment from the official TaoMai account.
[TaoMai]: Oh my, we’re looking forward to Xiao Bai’s performance! The colleagues are excited for your brilliant display~
He wasn’t worried. On the day of the shoot, he woke up early and worked from 8:00 AM until 2:30 AM. When Yu Congyue, who “happened to be working late,” picked him up and brought him home, Bai Xun collapsed onto the sofa, unable to move a muscle.
Yu Congyue crouched beside him, his fingers gently brushing against the tail hanging behind Bai Xun’s back. Sensing no reaction, he leaned in. Bai Xun was so exhausted he had fallen fast asleep.
Seeing this state of total depletion, Yu Congyue recalled the third-person footage of Bai Xun he’d seen on social media that afternoon. He was wearing his work uniform, running back and forth to handle various emergencies, skipping meals to shove a piece of bread in his mouth while continuing to film. In every clip, he was working relentlessly.
The memory made Yu Congyue’s chest ache.
“Xiao Bai?” He gently shook Bai Xun’s shoulder, trying to wake him to go to his room.
“Ge… sleepy…” Bai Xun murmured and drifted off again. His phone lit up nearby; his health app summarized his steps for the day.
Yu Congyue glanced at it: 40,000 steps.
It seemed he really wasn’t going to wake up. But letting him sleep downstairs didn’t feel right. After a moment’s hesitation, he picked Bai Xun up in a princess carry and brought him upstairs. He propped him up on the bed and found a pair of pajamas in the bathroom. Smelling the faint scent of the same body wash he used, he couldn’t help but smile.
Yu Congyue placed the pajamas at the foot of the bed and went back to the bathroom to wring out a warm towel. After checking the water temperature, he returned to the bedside, steeled his nerves, and removed Bai Xun’s outer clothes.
“Xiao Bai, I’ll give you a quick wipe-down before you change…”
The heater was on full blast, but Bai Xun still shivered slightly when his skin hit the air. Yu Congyue bit his lip and moved quickly with the warm towel, starting from the back of the neck. He closed his eyes and turned his head away, relying on memory to wipe him down from top to bottom. He swapped for a dry towel to dab away the excess moisture and quickly pulled the pajamas onto him.
After pulling the duvet over him, Yu Congyue returned to the bathroom with the towel.
When he came back out, Bai Xun had rolled over, curled up under the covers and sleeping soundly. He had no idea what had just happened, showing only his face and the beast ears that rose and fell with his breath.
Yu Congyue leaned down, looking at Bai Xun’s peaceful sleeping face and slightly parted lips. Finally, he couldn’t resist. He leaned in and left a soft, fleeting kiss on the corner of his mouth.
“Goodnight, Xiao Bai.”
