- Chapter 10 - How a Fanboy Becomes a Sugar Daddy (10)
Beneath the drama crew’s Weibo post, a fierce war of words raged, yet the crew remained silent. As time passed, more and more people swarmed in, their opinions clashing, further fueled by internet trolls. It was a bloody battlefield of opinions.
Just when everyone thought the crew would maintain their silence, a notification pinged. The long-dormant Weibo account suddenly posted an update.
Besides a sincere apology to Qin Yunran, they included a video. Clicking on it revealed footage from the set of Elegant Shadows of Espionage. In the video, Qin Yunran, secured by a wire around his waist, climbed and leaped from a height of six or seven meters with remarkable agility.
If not for the close-up shots, many would have mistaken him for a stunt double.
Halfway down, disaster struck!
As his dark green coat billowed in the wind, every fan’s heart leaped into their throat. They desperately wished they could replace the dazed female crew member and catch Qin Yunran themselves.
Three meters might not sound high, but it was enough to kill someone. Even knowing Qin Yunran was unharmed, the sight still made their hearts clench. Thankfully, he landed on the safety mat… Wait, what’s happening? Why is someone rushing over?
Many people didn’t even realize what had happened at first. They rubbed their eyes and rewound the video.
In the nick of time, a figure had suddenly rushed forward with astonishing speed, rescuing the girl who was about to be injured.
The girl was clearly still in shock, her face blank before a blush slowly crept across her cheeks.
Even those worried about Qin Yunran couldn’t help but be captivated by the rescuer. Even the trolls watching the video with malicious intent found themselves staring at him for a couple of seconds.
The man’s brow furrowed, his handsome face tensing slightly, accentuating the sharp, alluring lines of his profile.
It was straight out of a romantic drama: a hero saving a damsel in distress!
It wasn’t until chaos erupted on set, with someone shouting, “Mr. Lu and Teacher Qin are both injured!” that people snapped back to reality. Confused, they rewound the video again, only then noticing that not only had Qin Yunran broken his right leg in the fall, but the man’s left leg had also been injured when he caught her.
The hard military boot, carrying tremendous momentum, had slammed into the vulnerable shin. It looked incredibly painful. One could almost hear the sickening crunch of bone.
Yet neither of the injured men cried out. Instead, they exchanged a joke, their eyes meeting in a moment of shared understanding.
The director quickly shared the video, praising Qin Yunran’s acting skills and dedication. Among the countless shares were those from entertainment influencers with massive followings. The short clip packed a punch, sparking widespread discussion.
[That’s such a high floor; just looking at it makes me dizzy. Why didn’t Qin Yunran use a stunt double for something so dangerous?]
[Do the haters’ faces hurt? He did that himself, without a stunt double, even at that height. If that’s not dedication, are there any dedicated actors left in the entertainment industry?]
[It’s just two floors, and he was even on a wire. Anyone could do that.]
[Heh, I bet most people would get weak knees just standing up there. Keyboard warriors will brag about anything when they’re behind a screen.]
With video evidence, the rumors about Qin Yunran’s lack of professionalism crumbled. Even those who insisted on criticizing him couldn’t deny the truth as more and more people watched the clip and formed their own opinions.
Meanwhile, the crowd’s attention shifted to Cheng Kaixin.
[Doesn’t anyone think the guy who saved him was amazing? He’s handsome, and his moves were incredible. Does anyone know who he is? I think I heard someone call him Mr. Lu?]
[Holy shit, Lingxing’s boss is named Lu! Could this be Lu Jinhua?!]
[No way, rich people are too afraid of dying. Would a CEO really be a hero?]
[Qin Yunran’s kick was so precise! How unlucky do you have to be to get sniped like that? Sorry, it’s awful, but I can’t stop laughing!]
A few minutes later, the production team posted another Weibo update, @Lu Jinhua: “Boss, we heard someone say you’re in rough shape. How’s your fracture doing?” The post included a zoomed-in screenshot of the kick, captioned: “Precision strike.”
The people lurking under the production team’s Weibo were stunned. The person who got injured while saving someone was really Lingxing’s boss?!
*****
[So Ranran broke the production team’s sugar daddy’s leg with one kick? I don’t know who to feel sorry for anymore, ha ha ha ha ha!]
[Alright, everyone, pack it up. Qin Yunran sent Lingxing’s boss to the hospital. He’s already gotten his revenge. This is true mutual destruction!]
[Hey, the production team used the meme I just made! The social media manager is so cute. Aren’t they afraid of getting in trouble with the boss? I have more here, everyone; take what you want!]
Lian Weiwei grinned like an auntie as she saved the set of reaction memes. Cheng Kaixin and Qin Yunran exchanged glances. “Does it hurt?” “Does your leg hurt?” “Come on, let’s hurt each other!” she laughed, unable to contain herself.
Qin Yunran’s head ached from her laughter. He picked up his crutches and returned to his bed.
He logged onto Weibo and watched the video. Seeing himself fall from a third-person perspective felt surreal.
The fall had been so sudden that he hadn’t even had time to feel fear. Afterward, though his leg throbbed, the guilt of dragging Cheng Kaixin into it made him feel both responsible and amused. He completely forgot about his own injury.
Many fans @’d him, sharing the widely circulated “Let’s Hurt Each Other” meme. After watching for a while, Qin Yunran smirked and retweeted it, @’ing Cheng Kaixin.
Cheng Kaixin’s Weibo account was new. After Qin Yunran followed him, his follower count skyrocketed at a visibly rapid pace.
[Qin Yunran is toxic, LOL! So goofy, I’m switching from being a casual observer to a full-on fan.]
[Isn’t Lingxing’s president angry about this? They must be close, or Qin Yunran wouldn’t dare joke like that.]
Only ugly ones are called “boss”! The handsome ones should be called “President”! Mr. Lu, why haven’t you posted on Weibo? Look at me! I’m your looks fan—no, I admire your character! Your heroic spirit is something we should all learn from!
After being tagged countless times, Cheng Kaixin finally made his first Weibo post:
A photo of two crutches leaning against each other beside a hospital bed is captioned: “Why must one cripple make things difficult for another?”
The comments section instantly flooded with laughter.
[With legs as long as yours, these crutches must feel so short! I propose we crowdfund two-meter-long crutches for them!]
[These crutches are even a matching set! I hereby dub you the “Peerless Crippled Duo”!] (Manual doge face)
[Mr. Lu is tragically handsome. I was the cushion on the scene—I wish I could have expanded tenfold to protect Ranran and Mr. Lu!]
[I was the girl in his arms! Being held and protected by the President felt amazing!]
Lian Weiwei posted: [I’m the girl in his arms!] But her comment was immediately followed by a string of replies: [I’m the girl in his arms!]
“The real one’s right here,” she muttered, pouting. “This is infuriating.”
Cheng Kaixin chuckled. “Of course you’re the real deal.” He spread his arms wide. “Want to feel it again?”
Lian Weiwei blushed.
She could still remember how it felt when Cheng Kaixin had hugged her that day. It had been so hot. She was sweaty from working hard, but he smelled faintly of something fresh and clean.
“Host! Stop being a pervert with the female lead!” the System groaned for the nth time.
“Just teasing her,” Cheng Kaixin said, always enjoying teasing the System. “It’s to make Qin Yunran jealous. Look at him—doesn’t he look unhappy?”
The System, easily swayed, immediately checked on Qin Yunran. “You’re right! He glanced at you, then at Lian Weiwei, and turned away with a tight-lipped expression.”
The System perked up. “Your plan worked! He must realize he likes Lian Weiwei now!”
Cheng Kaixin drawled, “Next time you criticize me, think twice. Even my seemingly frivolous actions might have deeper meaning.”
“I almost believed you,” the System grumbled. “But that last line makes me think you’re just talking nonsense again.”
Lian Weiwei felt her cheeks flush under Cheng Kaixin’s amused gaze. She quickly lowered her head and resumed scrolling through Weibo. When nervous, she tended to chatter incessantly, her voice chirping like a bird as she read comments aloud and offered her own commentary. Though her voice was pleasant, her energy bordered on excessive.
She was practically a second System.
Cheng Kaixin interrupted her. “Peel an apple for me.”
“Okay, okay!” Lian Weiwei hurried to wash an apple. She wasn’t skilled at peeling and, tense with fear of cutting herself, focused intently on the task.
The room finally fell silent. Lian Weiwei sat beside Cheng Kaixin’s bed, peeling the apple, looking every bit like a caring girlfriend visiting her sick boyfriend. Watching their interaction, Qin Yunran suddenly regretted returning to his own bed.
The phrase “the real deal” from earlier now sounded rather harsh.
After a while, Lian Weiwei announced, “All done!”
“Not bad,” Cheng Kaixin said, offering a half-hearted compliment to the noticeably smaller apple. “Now, you eat it.”
“Huh? Aren’t you going to eat it?” Lian Weiwei held up the apple, her face puzzled.
Cheng Kaixin feigned concern. “You’ve been talking so much. I’m worried you’re thirsty.”
So, he just thought I was talking too much? Lian Weiwei suddenly deflated.
Qin Yunran’s mood brightened. He struggled to suppress his laughter, not wanting to hurt Lian Weiwei’s feelings.
Cheng Kaixin glanced at him, noticing his subtle expression. “Peel one for him too,” he said to Lian Weiwei. “He looks like he wants some.”
Lian Weiwei held up her apple. “Then, do you want this one?” she asked Qin Yunran.
“No, thank you,” Qin Yunran replied.
“But she peeled it for you herself,” Cheng Kaixin said, raising his eyebrows and emphasizing, “She peeled it herself.”
Who exactly did she peel it for? Qin Yunran suppressed his smile and said calmly, “I’m sorry, I’m allergic to apples.”
Really? Someone’s allergic to apples? Cheng Kaixin stared at him in surprise. “The things people are allergic to these days are so weird.”
“I’ve only ever heard of mango allergies,” Lian Weiwei said, looking at Qin Yunran with sympathy. “That’s too bad. I guess I’ll have to eat it myself.”
Crunch, crunch. She finished the apple.
With a crisp click, Qin Yunran tapped on Cheng Kaixin’s Weibo profile picture and added him to his special follow list. After scrolling through related topics for a while, he suddenly came across the hashtag #TheQinJinAlliance.
Clicking on it, he was shocked to find… fanfiction about their pairing?
Qin Yunran knew many people enjoyed creating fan pairings. Qu Wen had even jokingly shown him some of his own bizarre pairings in the past.
But this is happening way too fast, he thought to himself and then quietly continued reading.
