The Third Year After The Breakup, He Knelt and Begged to Get Back Together - Chapter 24
Chapter 24
Qi Mingfeng! You’re still acting with me even now…
Two weeks passed in a flash.
According to the plan, Qi Mingfeng was to stay in C City to handle the last few minor details, while He Xian and Meng Ying would go to Island F first to confirm the status of the engagement ceremony site, allowing He Xian to make further refinements and give the final approval.
Today was a cloudy day. The weather forecast said it would rain in the early morning; the air was damp and humid, and the pedestrians on the street walked in a hurry as if they were all rushing to get something done.
Qi Mingfeng was counting the time. At the thought of what he was about to do next, his heart couldn’t help but accelerate.
Over in D City, the small boss had originally been keeping an eye on things, but in the last two days, the big boss had called the small boss away for business. The full-time caregiver he had hired previously had been dismissed by Qi Huan with an excuse just a few days after the surgery.
Although the excuse sounded legitimate, Qi Mingfeng knew that Qi Huan wanted to save him money. He couldn’t win the argument, and seeing that Qi Huan’s recovery was indeed going well, he didn’t insist further.
Qi Mingfeng returned to He Xian’s residence. After entering the community, he called Qi Huan to discuss the final details.
The call was answered quickly.
Though Qi Huan’s voice didn’t sound like a normal person’s yet, it wasn’t as weak as before: “Brother.”
Qi Mingfeng: “How is the packing going?”
Qi Huan: “I’ve packed everything. Brother, how about we just meet at the station? It’ll save you a trip to the hospital.”
Qi Mingfeng immediately vetoed it: “No. Your body hasn’t recovered yet. I already feel bad enough making you travel with me; how could I let you go to the station alone?”
Qi Huan: “It’s fine, Brother. The doctor said I’m recovering well, as long as I’m careful not to do strenuous exercise or have strong emotional fluctuations.”
Qi Mingfeng fell silent for a moment: “Ah Huan, it was I who implicated you in the first place, and now we can’t even stay in D City…”
He couldn’t tell Qi Huan that he had gotten mixed up with He Xian again and was now fleeing a wedding.
If Qi Huan knew, given the boy’s personality, he would probably end up in the ICU on the spot. He could only say that Ruan Zhiyan had come looking for trouble again, and this time they had to move further away.
Although it would still make one angry to hear, it was easier for Qi Huan to accept than the truth, and it was very logical.
Qi Huan said helplessly: “Brother is saying those kinds of things again. Ruan Zhiyan is pursuing us relentlessly; it’s very likely he is retaliating against me for severing his hand tendons two years ago. I know exactly how much force I used; he shouldn’t dream of playing the piano again in this lifetime.”
Qi Mingfeng: “If it weren’t for me, you wouldn’t have had to face him.”
“But if it weren’t for me, wouldn’t you have been able to go back to the Ruan family and live your life as a young master?” Qi Huan interrupted Qi Mingfeng. “Alright, Brother, let’s not say things like that anymore. I… coming! Brother, someone is knocking on the door, it’s probably the nurse doing rounds. Don’t worry about rushing over, it’s still early, go eat something first.”
Qi Mingfeng: “Okay, remember to eat too.”
Qi Mingfeng knew he shouldn’t be so overly sensitive with Qi Huan. Putting himself in Qi Huan’s shoes, he wouldn’t feel any resentment either.
But facing the younger brother he had raised since childhood, who should have had a limitless future, he always felt a sense of debt.
He shook his head.
Don’t think too much anymore.
In the future, they would surely support each other and live a good life.
…
Qi Mingfeng pushed open the door to He Xian’s house. Because the clouds were heavy and it was late, the house was pitch black.
He turned on the light. When he looked back, he discovered someone sitting on the sofa.
Qi Mingfeng was startled.
He felt relieved when he realized it was He Xian… no… wait…
A tablet was placed on the table in front of He Xian. Because of the angle, Qi Mingfeng couldn’t see the screen.
Judging by how dark the room had just been, the tablet likely wasn’t lit up either.
In other words, He Xian had been sitting home alone without even turning on a light, staring blankly at a blank tablet screen?
The heart that was about to settle was yanked high again. Qi Mingfeng spoke with feigned composure: “You scared me to death. Weren’t you supposed to go to Island F with Assistant Meng? Why haven’t you left yet?”
He Xian looked up at him, his face devoid of expression: “I forgot to take something.”
The howling gale was blocked outside. The room was unnervingly quiet. Likely because he had a guilty conscience, Qi Mingfeng didn’t quite dare to meet He Xian’s eyes: “What thing?”
He Xian: “Our rings. I want to take them over first.”
The house was equipped with climate control, yet Qi Mingfeng felt a layer of fine sweat break out on his back.
He forced a smile: “It’s the same if I bring them over.”
He Xian stood up and walked toward him. A shadow loomed over him, carrying an inexplicable sense of pressure: “Where are the rings?”
Qi Mingfeng’s fingers rubbed together uneasily: “In the room…”
He Xian: “Go get them.”
Qi Mingfeng: “Oh, okay.”
Qi Mingfeng turned and walked toward the workroom, fished out the exquisite little box, and brought it back to the living room.
He Xian flipped open the lid. The two rings lay quietly inside. He tucked them into his pocket and spoke: “Let’s go. I’ll have someone pack the rest of the things. You come with me first.”
Qi Mingfeng: “I’ll head there tomorrow morning before dawn. You go see the venue first; you’re so picky, there’s bound to be something you want to change.”
He Xian didn’t respond. He grabbed the hand Qi Mingfeng had unknowingly clenched into a fist and pried his fingers open one by one.
Due to tension, the palm had been pinched by fingernails into crescent-shaped red marks, which he hadn’t even noticed.
Now being heavily stroked by He Xian, he only felt his skin crawl.
He Xian’s tone was indistinguishable in its anger or joy: “I’ll give you one last chance, Qi Mingfeng. Come with me first.”
A dense itch rose in his palm, like being brushed by the fangs of a snake—especially not knowing if the snake was venomous or not—leaving Qi Mingfeng in a state of panic and unease.
At this moment, he was actually afraid of He Xian.
Had He Xian discovered a clue?
But what could He Xian have discovered…
The longing for freedom in his heart made Qi Mingfeng harbor a final shred of hope: “Why such a rush? I’m not comfortable leaving our things to others. You go first.”
The next second, He Xian grabbed his collar and slammed him against the wall. He Xian’s fury arrived even before the pain: “Qi Mingfeng! You’re still acting with me even now!”
Qi Mingfeng’s voice trembled: “What are you saying?”
“Still acting!” He Xian stared at him fixedly, as if he wanted to tear him bone from skin. “You only agreed to come back with me because Qi Huan was sick and you needed money. As soon as you heard about the engagement, you immediately tried to sell the rings to Ruan Zhiyan so you could run away with Qi Huan, right!”
Qi Mingfeng’s heart pounded violently. He made a final struggle: “Who did you hear that from? Ruan Zhiyan? He’s trying to sow discord…”
“You won’t admit it until you see the evidence, will you!”
He Xian dragged him and threw him onto the sofa, unlocking the screen of the tablet.
“See for yourself!”
The tablet was showing two windows in split-screen. One was the surveillance footage of him meeting Ruan Zhiyan at the coffee shop that day; the other was an audio file.
He had specifically checked that coffee shop; the surveillance was far away and couldn’t record sound. He clicked to play the audio.
“I’ve taken over the preparations for the engagement ceremony, and Meng Ying is cooperating with me. When the time comes, I’ll have Meng Ying leak word…”
