- Chapter 22 - The Demon Sect Leader Suffers from Insomnia (9)
That night, Lin Junqing did not realize his wish to sleep in a separate bed. He and Chu Yu sat on the bed together for the entire night until the sun rose, at which point the internal energy generated by the Snow Jade Lotus was finally completely refined.
Lin Junqing opened his eyes, feeling incredibly conflicted. He had been preparing to poison Chu Yu, yet Chu Yu had given him the Snow Jade Lotus. How could he possibly repay such a massive favor? Seeing Lin Junqing’s brow furrowed, Chu Yu could not resist reaching out to smooth it. “What are you worrying about?”
Looking into Chu Yu’s eyes, which resembled Xie Lin’s, Lin Junqing impulsively asked, “If I betray you one day, will you kill me?”
The System grew frantic. “Host, have you lost your mind? How could you say such a thing to Chu Yu? You are implying that you intend to betray him. He had little guard against you, but now he will certainly be twice as cautious.”
Lin Junqing remained calm. “What a joke. Chu Yu has plenty of guard against me; if he did not, why would he arrange for Demon Sect disciples to monitor me outside the mountain stream?”
The System tried to reason with him. “He is just afraid you will run away, which is not the same as guarding against you. He never asks you to taste the food you cook before he eats it; how is that lack of guard?”
Lin Junqing could not win against the System, so he gave up. “I have already said it; I cannot turn back time. Arguing with you is useless.”
The System fell silent; it was just anxious, not really trying to argue. Chu Yu, hearing the question, speculated that Lin Junqing might have discovered something. “Did you find something out?” Initially, he had intended to probe with words, but he felt it was unnecessary. Since Lin Junqing had asked directly, he would do the same.
Lin Junqing shook his head. “I do not know much, but there is no disciple named Lin Qing in the Huayun Sect, and the Huayun Sect has no Grandmasters.”
Chu Yu tapped his fingers on the table. “How did you know I am a Grandmaster?” With Lin Junqing’s level of cultivation, he could not possibly sense his internal energy. Lin Junqing did not answer because his earlier statement had been a complete fabrication. He did not know if the Huayun Sect existed, let alone if they had a Grandmaster. He had simply assumed that because true Grandmasters were rare and the Huayun Sect was not a major power, it was unlikely they would possess one. Judging by Chu Yu’s expression, he had guessed correctly.
Chu Yu did not pursue the matter further. He stood up to clear the bowls. “Regardless of who I am, it is a fact that you saved me. You are my savior, and even if you betrayed me, I could not kill you.” He would simply bring Lin Junqing back to the Demon Sect and lock him away until he admitted his mistake.
Having not slept all night, Lin Junqing did not want to stay at the mountain stream and planned to return to the Medicine Immortal Valley. He left without telling Chu Yu, who watched him go with a grim expression. He suspected Lin Junqing had guessed his identity; otherwise, why ask such questions? Thinking of the fearful glances Lin Junqing had occasionally shot him, Chu Yu sneered internally. Perhaps Lin Junqing had known all along.
Mo Ying appeared behind Chu Yu. “Master, I have determined several uses for the Medicine Jade. If ground into incense, it increases internal energy; it is a miraculous healing agent, preserves corpses from decay, and can neutralize rare poisons.”
Chu Yu smiled, though his eyes remained icy. “My poisoning has spread throughout the martial arts world, and the Medicine Immortal Valley knows I have come to seize the jade. Since they have made no preparations, this must be a trap to lure me in. Ignore Nanshan Temple. Send men to surround the Medicine Immortal Valley. No disciples are to be killed without my permission.” He might not care about the valley, but he cared about Lin Junqing; he did not want to become his mortal enemy.
After dismissing Mo Ying, Chu Yu drifted toward the Medicine Immortal Valley like a ghost. He had promised not to let Lin Junqing out of his sight. He followed from a distance far greater than a kilometer, so the System failed to detect him.
Along the way, Lin Junqing encountered Senior Sister Sun Wan, who shyly handed him a silk-wrapped box. Lin Junqing’s heart sank; he felt a surge of nervousness. “Senior Sister, what is this?” Was she about to confess her love to him? He had known he was popular with the girls!
Sun Wan bit her lip, blushing, and whispered, “Little Junior Brother, could you please take this box to Senior Brother?”
Lin Junqing’s excitement evaporated. So, it was not a confession; he was merely being used as a delivery boy. Seeing her pleading eyes, he nodded. Sun Wan blushed even deeper, unable to meet his eyes, and ran away. Lin Junqing, touched by this ancient display of shyness, brought the box to Jin Mingqiu.
Chu Yu, watching from afar, saw Lin Junqing talking happily with a man and approached quietly, spotting the exquisite box.
“Senior Brother, please wait until I leave to open this box. Come find me afterward and tell me your thoughts.”
He only stated that Sun Wan had entrusted him with the delivery. Jin Mingqiu’s face flushed a deep red; he had never been confessed to before, let alone by Sun Wan, whom he had secretly admired for so long. He nodded to Lin Junqing, his voice soft. “Thank you, Little Junior Brother.”
Lin Junqing left quickly, fearing his presence would only make Jin Mingqiu more embarrassed. Chu Yu remained in the shadows, continuing to observe. Jin Mingqiu took a deep breath and carefully opened the box, revealing a concentric jade pendant and a lock of hair tied with red silk.
Chu Yu assumed the pendant was a gift from Lin Junqing and that the hair belonged to him. His mind was in turmoil. “It must be a misunderstanding. They are both men. How could two men love each other?”
“Why not? Love knows no gender. There were emperors in ancient times who married men; were they not praised?”
“Qingyue could not possibly love Jin Mingqiu.”
“Is it that Qingyue does not love him, or that you refuse to allow it? If Qingyue had given you the pendant, would you still care about tradition? You are clearly only bothered because you are not the one he loves.”
The two voices argued inside him, and Chu Yu finally understood: his affection for Lin Junqing was not just because of the peaceful sleep he provided, but genuine romantic love. He could not deceive his own heart. He was not angry that Lin Junqing loved a man, but that Lin Junqing did not love him.
Seeing Jin Mingqiu staring at the box in a daze, Chu Yu unleashed a blast of energy. Jin Mingqiu, unable to dodge, was thrown dozens of meters away. Chu Yu, his expression dark, struck the nearby cliffside, causing a giant boulder to tumble toward the fallen man. Jin Mingqiu, his internal energy already disrupted, turned his back to the falling rock to shield the small box. He smiled bitterly to himself. “Junior Sister Sun Wan, I hope we meet again in the next life.”
Chu Yu, being a master, heard these words and realized his mistake. He flicked his sleeve, shattering the boulder into dust. Stone and ash fell over Jin Mingqiu, who crawled out from the rubble, shocked to his core. To shatter a boulder with a single palm strike required Grandmaster-level power. Since only the Valley Master held that rank, he assumed the Master must have accidentally knocked the rock loose and then saved him out of guilt. Satisfied with this reasoning, Jin Mingqiu bowed respectfully toward the Master’s residence.
Chu Yu followed Lin Junqing and overheard him tell Sun Wan that he had delivered the box. Realizing the misunderstanding, Chu Yu nearly laughed out loud. The confusion had angered him, but it had also brought him clarity. If not for this, he might never have recognized his true feelings.
After Lin Junqing returned home, Chu Yu remained outside, sitting in a tree. Inside, the System reported, “Host, that was too dangerous. You did not see it, but Jin Mingqiu was almost killed by Chu Yu.”
Lin Junqing was silent. He had not seen it, but the System’s verbal play-by-play had painted a vivid picture. Chu Yu had been intentional, striking Jin Mingqiu and manipulating the falling rock. If not for the mention of Sun Wan, Jin Mingqiu would be dead.
Lin Junqing stopped thinking about Chu Yu outside and told the System, “I will poison Chu Yu soon and then escape.”
The System agreed. Chu Yu was far crazier than Xie Lin. This was not the modern world; life here was cheap, and only the strong survived. Chu Yu was too dangerous, and the System supported his departure completely.
Lin Junqing stayed in the valley for several days, knowing Chu Yu would paralyze him every night to sleep beside him. One morning, he heard a voice.
“Sect Leader Chu, I have been waiting in the Medicine Immortal Valley for a long time.”
