- Chapter 20 - The Demon Sect Leader Suffers from Insomnia (7)
When Lin Junqing woke up, Chu Yu had already set breakfast on the table and boiled water for washing his face. If Lin Junqing had not insisted on washing outside, Chu Yu certainly would have brought the basin inside for him.
During breakfast, Chu Yu asked with feigned trepidation, “This is my first time cooking. How does it taste?”
Lin Junqing glanced down at his bowl. “The porridge is cooked, and the vegetables are not too salty. Your culinary skills are on par with mine; you have quite a talent for cooking.”
Perhaps because he had finally rested well, Chu Yu found everything in the world pleasant, especially anything involving Lin Junqing. Just a single compliment about his cooking talent was enough to keep him quietly delighted for the entire day.
After breakfast, Lin Junqing began his physical training. Lacking a formal technique, he simply ran laps around the valley. Chu Yu sat on a giant rock with a piece of dogtail grass in his mouth, waiting for Lin Junqing to finish ten laps before asking, “What martial art are you practicing?” He had read nearly a thousand martial arts manuals, but none required endless running in circles.
Lin Junqing was panting, drenched in sweat. Seeing Chu Yu sitting there looking roguish with the blade of grass in his mouth, he looked up with a sincere, determined expression. “My talent for martial arts is low, so I have decided to take the path of body cultivation.”
Upon hearing this, the grass fell from Chu Yu’s mouth. He looked Lin Junqing’s slender frame up and down, then straightened his back with a serious look. “Do you know how difficult body cultivation is? The mortality rate is extremely high. One slight mistake or improper breathing, and you could damage your meridians.”
He did not mean to discourage Lin Junqing, but if he had no talent for internal martial arts, why believe he had talent for body cultivation? Usually, those with a talent for body cultivation showed signs early on, such as an insatiable appetite or a naturally massive build. Lin Junqing, however, looked ordinary and even slightly frailer than the average person. He was drenched in sweat after just ten laps, possessing less physical stamina than the average dock worker. He was simply not built for body cultivation.
Lin Junqing looked at Chu Yu again, his tone even firmer. “I know, but I will persist.” He did not believe that with the Heavenly Dao’s healing constitution, he could actually kill himself through training. Even if the training was difficult, his goal was not to be a legendary fighter, but simply to build a powerful set of muscles.
Chu Yu wanted to advise against it, but seeing Lin Junqing start running again immediately after a brief rest, his determination was so absolute that Chu Yu swallowed his words. He could not bear to see Lin Junqing disappointed. If his lack of talent for internal arts was the reason he turned to body cultivation, then Chu Yu would simply ensure he became talented.
Chu Yu used his internal energy to transmit a message to his subordinates several thousand meters away, ordering them to bring all the secret manuals and celestial treasures he had previously collected to the valley. He would provide Lin Junqing with the highest level manuals and feed him celestial treasures to force his internal energy to grow. Once Lin Junqing possessed deep internal energy, he would give up the idea of body cultivation. Body cultivation was far too dangerous; he could not let Lin Junqing take such a risk.
Chu Yu kept a close watch on Lin Junqing. If Lin Junqing’s body reached its limit, he would force him to rest, even if it made Lin Junqing angry. To his shock, Lin Junqing kept going. He had expected him to last at most half an hour, but each time he thought Lin Junqing was about to collapse, he would surprise him, finding a sudden reserve of strength to continue. If he had not seen it with his own eyes, he would have suspected Lin Junqing had taken some sort of stamina boosting pill.
Chu Yu looked at Lin Junqing with pride. He was indeed the person he had chosen; his talent was truly beyond that of an ordinary person. When Chu Yu moved in to support Lin Junqing, he secretly checked his meridians with internal energy, feeling a hint of confusion. He was certain Lin Junqing had never trained his body before, so why were his meridians completely undamaged after his first day of training? Furthermore, the mysterious way Lin Junqing regained his stamina was completely at odds with his knowledge of martial arts.
Lin Junqing, unaware that Chu Yu was probing him, wiped the sweat from his forehead and asked the System excitedly, “At this rate, how long will it take for me to become a muscular man?”
The System did not want to discourage him, but it could not lie. “Host, your wish to become a muscular man may be difficult to realize. Your unique constitution maintains your body at its most perfect state. You are already in that perfect state now.”
Lin Junqing’s face nearly betrayed his shock, though he managed to maintain a calm expression. “What do you mean? I cannot grow muscles?”
The System replied, “It seems so.”
Hearing this definitive answer, the fire in Lin Junqing’s heart vanished instantly. Had he known, he would have asked the System sooner, saving himself a whole morning of wasted time.
Lunch, prepared by Chu Yu, was simple: roasted fish and stir-fried wild rabbit. That afternoon, Lin Junqing did not train; he returned to his bedroom to sleep. Although his body had recovered, his mental exhaustion remained. The healing constitution could only repair physical damage, not mental fatigue. Seeing Lin Junqing go to bed, Chu Yu asked curiously, “Not training this afternoon?”
Lin Junqing was in a bad mood at the mention of the subject. He turned his back to Chu Yu and replied gloomily, “I am done. I have discovered that I have no talent for body cultivation.”
Chu Yu was baffled. How could Lin Junqing not have talent? The hardest part of body cultivation was physical damage, and after a whole morning of training, Lin Junqing’s meridians were perfectly fine, overcoming the greatest hurdle. As long as he persisted, even a pig could become a master. Chu Yu looked at Lin Junqing’s back with a complex expression. Was this what people called having the enthusiasm of a tea break?
Not knowing why Lin Junqing was downcast, Chu Yu sat by the bed and said softly, “Qingyue, I think you have talent. Why not continue training?”
Lin Junqing was troubled. “You do not understand. It is pointless for me to train now.” He did not want martial prowess; he wanted muscles. Since he could not build them, why bother? He wanted to escape reality, so he pulled the quilt over his head, signaling he was napping and wanted no noise.
Chu Yu sat quietly by the bed. Once he heard Lin Junqing’s breathing grow shallow, he carefully lifted the quilt and lay down beside him. He had never napped before; he hoped it would be pleasant. The System wanted to warn Lin Junqing, but considering how exhausted he was, it held its tongue. There was only one bed in the hut; even if he woke him, Lin Junqing could not avoid the bed come nightfall anyway.
Lin Junqing slept soundly and uncomfortably. He dreamt that he was being crushed by a giant mountain, his body heavy and suffocating. Struggling in his dream, he finally opened his eyes to see Chu Yu’s face looming over him. Without thinking, he pushed at Chu Yu’s shoulder.
Chu Yu had been sleeping soundly beside Lin Junqing. He woke up when Lin Junqing did, but did not open his eyes immediately. As Lin Junqing pushed him, he was still holding Lin Junqing, with most of his body leaning over him. Chu Yu opened his eyes and looked at Lin Junqing with deep confusion, his voice raspy from sleep. “Why are you pushing me?”
Lin Junqing felt both angry and anxious, his earlobes turning red. “You did not say you were taking a nap! I had no psychological preparation when I saw you immediately upon waking.” Had he known Chu Yu would nap, he would have stayed awake. Having learned of Chu Yu’s true intentions, he could not treat him as he had before.
Chu Yu did not understand Lin Junqing’s agitation, his eyes growing more puzzled. He was certain that Lin Junqing’s anger was not because he had been startled awake. Chu Yu’s gaze scanned Lin Junqing’s shoulder; he reached out to straighten Lin Junqing’s crumpled clothes, his warm fingertips brushing against the equally warm muscles. His breathing began to change.
Sensing the shift in Chu Yu’s gaze, Lin Junqing sat upright. “This bamboo bed is too small. There is still plenty of time before dark; I will go make a new bed. The two of us are too crowded sleeping together.”
Before Chu Yu could process his own joyful yet chaotic emotions, he heard Lin Junqing’s declaration about making a bed and sleeping separately. This was unacceptable. He had suffered from severe insomnia since childhood. Lack of sleep made him irritable, and when he was irritable, he wanted to destroy everything. He might have accepted it if he had never known the bliss of sleep, but he now knew the happiness of resting peacefully. He would never go back to those nights spent wide awake.
Lin Junqing did not wait for a reply, scrambling up and grabbing a hatchet from the kitchen to cut down bamboo.
“Host, I have a new discovery regarding Chu Yu.”
Lin Junqing strode into the bamboo forest with the hatchet, telling the System to get to the point.
“Look at the expression Chu Yu had just now; his face was full of confusion and bewilderment. This is ancient times, where information is not as widespread as it is in the modern era. I dare say that Chu Yu may not yet have realized his own feelings for you. He does not yet know he is attracted to men.”
“Host, why don’t we go back to the valley and ask the Senior Brother? Chu Yu is thirty-five years old; has he never had a female companion in the martial arts world? If he has, does that not prove he preferred women in the past?”
Lin Junqing’s grip on the hatchet tightened. “You have a point. If Chu Yu truly has not realized he is inclined toward men, that would be wonderful.”
The System replied, “Whether Chu Yu is inclined toward men or not makes little difference to you, Host. You will eventually have him poisoned to death. It is a pity; if Chu Yu is killed by someone else, our mission will be a failure, and his Sunshine Value is still negative.”
Lin Junqing felt profoundly uneasy. He had put the rescue mission to the back of his mind; he only wanted to rectify his mistake of curing Chu Yu’s poison. Whether Chu Yu lived or died, he could not concern himself with that now.
Lin Junqing had the System scan the area. The System made a new discovery. “Host, in a large tree 500 meters away, there are two people in black. They look like Demon Sect disciples.” The System had recognized the distinctive black and red uniforms from a previous encounter with the sect. Lin Junqing knew there were likely more than just two of them in the vicinity. He had wanted to capture an animal to test the Heart-Devouring poison, but with Demon Sect members watching, he dared not risk taking it out.
