- The System Wants Me To Save A Lucky Tycoon [Quick Transmigration]
- Chapter 2 - The Wealthy Tycoon Suffers from Mental Illness (2)
Only after Xie Lin and his dozen associates had departed did Lin Junqing dare to breathe. He said to the system in his mind, “Is he really the Child of Destiny? His presence is incredibly overwhelming. He only glanced at me from a distance, yet I found myself holding my breath. Can I really approach someone like him?”
He deeply doubted his ability to get near Xie Lin without being killed by a single look.
The system was also intimidated by Xie Lin and lamented, “He is a Child of Destiny, after all; his presence is truly formidable. However, host, you do not need to envy him. As long as you complete the salvation mission and receive the rewards from the Heavenly Dao, you will be able to become just as powerful.”
There was one thing the system did not tell Lin Junqing: the probability of a host completing their first mission was 0.001%, and it had already prepared for the possibility of failure. Since the Child of Destiny’s sunlight value was at 40%, even if the mission failed, it would not have a significant impact on the world. Besides, this was an excellent start.
Lin Junqing ignored the empty promises and took a piece of bread out of his pocket to eat. He and Xie Lin were people from two different worlds; there would be no intersection between them. Furthermore, he had no idea how to save the world since Xie Lin had not yet turned dark.
Lin Junqing asked the system, “If Xie Lin does not turn dark before I die, will the mission be considered complete or incomplete?”
The system fell silent for a moment to check the mission manual and replied, “It will be considered complete. The Heavenly Dao does not dictate the method of completion. As long as the Child of Destiny does not negatively impact the world by the time you die, the mission is considered a success.”
Lin Junqing paused. “If I commit suicide now, would that also count as completing the mission?”
Was there a loophole in the system’s mission?
The system retorted, “Host, you are oversimplifying. If you choose to end your own life, it counts as a failed mission.”
Lin Junqing continued eating his bread, thinking that this was only logical. If the missions were so easy to complete, the Heavenly Dao’s rewards would be everywhere.
Lin Junqing had no intention of approaching Xie Lin. He just needed to hide in the shadows and monitor Xie Lin’s sunlight value. If Xie Lin could maintain his current state until Lin Junqing died of natural causes, he would complete the mission just by living his life. At this thought, Lin Junqing could not help but curl the corners of his mouth. Who wouldn’t want immortality? Wasn’t this just another form of it?
Seeing the smile in Lin Junqing’s eyes, the system could guess what he was thinking and warned him cautiously, “Host, once you are killed by the Child of Destiny, that will be your true death. Only if your soul is strong enough is it possible to return to the soul space to recover. Your soul is too weak right now. If Xie Lin kills you, it will be the end of you.”
Upon hearing this, Lin Junqing took a sharp breath. He had not intended to approach Xie Lin, and now he wanted to avoid him even more. Although Xie Lin had not turned dark yet, he was still the Child of Destiny. What if a dark heart lay hidden beneath that handsome exterior?
The system had mentioned earlier that the Heavenly Dao only reached out to them when it detected signs that the Child of Destiny was beginning to turn dark. Even though Xie Lin’s sunlight value was 40, he must have shown some signs. He could not gamble with his life.
When Xie Lin arrived in the lounge, his mind involuntarily drifted to the mascot he had seen earlier. Every time he closed his eyes, he saw that mascot head soaked in sweat. He frowned in irritation, wondering why he was fixating on someone whose name, appearance, and gender he did not even know.
While patrolling the mall, Xie Lin found his feet leading him toward Lin Junqing’s workstation. He said to his assistant, “It is so hot today. Get the staff a cold drink and double their wages.”
Chen Dong, his assistant, understood Xie Lin well. He had not missed the look Xie Lin had given Lin Junqing, so he immediately carried out the order.
Twenty minutes later, Lin Junqing held a cup of lemon tea with ice. As the cold drink hit his stomach, he felt a sense of relief, as if he had come back to life.
Xie Lin caught a glimpse of Lin Junqing’s face. In that split second, he could not help but lick his lips, and his heart rate spiked. Xie Lin pretended to glance at Lin Junqing inadvertently before naturally withdrawing his gaze. As he left, he instructed Chen Dong, “Look into that boy.”
For thirty-one years, his heart had never been this chaotic, nor had he ever been so eager to get close to someone. Xie Lin pressed his tongue against the roof of his mouth, forcibly suppressing the dark impulses in his heart.
After Xie Lin left, Lin Junqing asked the system, perplexed, “Did you notice that? Did Xie Lin stare at me for a while? Why do I feel like his gaze was strange? When he stared at me, it was as if I were being watched by a poisonous snake, and cold sweat broke out on my back.”
It was mid-summer, and although the mall was air-conditioned, his workstation was near the entrance where he had to greet customers. In such high temperatures, the fact that he felt a chill down his spine was simply not scientific.
The system replied, “Host, I checked the System Forum. The Child of Destiny can sense our presence to some extent. Because we are outsiders, we are seen as invaders in their eyes. Many hosts have been killed by the Children of Destiny precisely for this reason.”
Lin Junqing gritted his teeth, his eyes full of unease. Since Xie Lin had watched him, had he already been targeted?
Seeing Lin Junqing’s fear, the system quickly added, “Xie Lin would not dare to do anything rash; this world is governed by law. No matter how powerful he is, he must abide by the law. Do not worry too much. If push comes to shove, we will just stay far away from him. Not every Child of Destiny wants to kill their host. Some become friends or brothers, and some hosts even marry the Child of Destiny and have children.”
The system’s words brought Lin Junqing some comfort. He was incredibly grateful to have arrived in a peaceful country where everyone was equal. Even if Xie Lin sensed something, he likely would not dare to commit murder; he might just be curious. Once he realized Lin Junqing was just an ordinary person, his curiosity would likely fade.
The system added, “Many systems on the forum complain that the Children of Destiny have a natural malice toward them. Therefore, you must be very careful with your words and actions in daily life and never offend the Child of Destiny.”
Lin Junqing could not help but roll his eyes at this. System missions were certainly not easy, and the rewards were not easily won.
That evening, information regarding Lin Junqing was already placed on Xie Lin’s desk.
“An orphan who only arrived in Yun City recently? Why is there so little information?”
Chen Dong bowed his head. “Boss, this Mr. Lin is very low-key. He does not like to post his life on social media, and he has no friends or relatives nearby, so we could not find any of his past history. Mr. Lin’s ID is not even linked to a phone number, so we could not track his browsing history.”
Chen Dong left out one detail: Lin Junqing’s information was far too clean, as if he had simply appeared out of thin air.
Xie Lin picked up a photo of Lin Junqing and asked Chen Dong with a smile, “What do you think of Lin Junqing?”
Chen Dong was shocked but managed to remain calm. “Mr. Lin has an outstanding appearance, comparable to current idols.”
Xie Lin smiled, tracing Lin Junqing’s lips in the photo with his finger, his voice low and gentle, “He is much better looking than any celebrity. I still need to hire a life assistant. Go and arrange it.”
Chen Dong understood the implication and was deeply stunned. He had been with Xie Lin for six years and had once believed that Xie Lin was like a monk with no human desires. Lin Junqing’s appearance was merely above average; beauty was the least valuable thing in Xie Lin’s eyes. If one were to be honest, Lin Junqing did not even compare to the starlet who had tried to crawl into Xie Lin’s bed last month.
In just a few seconds, Chen Dong began to imagine all sorts of things. He was dying to know if Xie Lin was truly interested in Lin Junqing—he was, after all, a man.
The next morning, the moment Lin Junqing arrived at the mall, he saw Chen Dong.
The system immediately warned, “Host, that is the assistant who was standing next to Xie Lin yesterday. It is over. Xie Lin is definitely targeting you. You must not reveal your identity as a host, and you must never let the Child of Destiny know of my existence, or you will certainly be killed.”
Concepts like time travel and systems would drive Xie Lin insane. Xie Lin had wealth and power, but what he surely craved now was immortality. If Xie Lin discovered Lin Junqing’s secret, Lin Junqing would spend the rest of his life in a laboratory.
Fearing that Lin Junqing might not take it seriously, the system added, “Host, please be careful. Do not take this lightly. Many systems on the forum have vented about how, once their hosts’ identities were exposed, they were captured by the Child of Destiny for research, suffering fates worse than death. They were driven insane and could not even recover upon returning to the soul space.”
Lin Junqing told the system to be quiet. He was taking it seriously; his heart had tightened the moment he saw Chen Dong. Seeing Lin Junqing’s stiff limbs, the system feared it had frightened him too much and quickly comforted him, “Host, relax. Xie Lin has not turned dark yet. His sunlight value is 40. While he is more shadowed than the average person, he is not yet a truly wicked individual.”
Lin Junqing agreed. As long as Xie Lin’s value was 40, he had not yet turned dark, so he was safe for the moment. Lin Junqing pretended not to recognize Chen Dong and walked toward the room where the mascot costumes were stored, hoping Chen Dong would not call out to him. He tried to convince himself that Chen Dong was only there for work-related matters, not to find him.
“Mr. Lin Junqing, please wait.”
Hearing Chen Dong call his name, Lin Junqing felt his last shred of optimism vanish. Chen Dong must be here because of Xie Lin. If not, he would stand on his head.
Lin Junqing was not a professional actor, but he knew that over-acting would only lead to mistakes, so he simply stood his ground and looked at Chen Dong. “Do you know me? Who are you?”
Since they had only met yesterday, the fact that Chen Dong knew his name meant Xie Lin must have investigated him.
Chen Dong walked up to Lin Junqing. Up close, he noticed that Lin Junqing’s skin was fair, smooth, and glowing. This level of health was incomparable to the celebrities who relied on makeup. If he were Xie Lin, he would also… well, no, he would not; he did not like men.
Chen Dong extended a hand to Lin Junqing with a friendly smile. “Hello, I am Xie Lin’s assistant, Chen Dong. We met yesterday.”
Lin Junqing did not know Chen Dong’s intentions, so he shook his hand. “Hello, Mr. Chen. May I ask why you are looking for me?”
Chen Dong’s smile grew warmer. “Mr. Xie saw you yesterday and asked about your work. He feels that at your age, you should have better employment opportunities. Coincidentally, Mr. Xie is looking to hire a life assistant. Are you interested in changing jobs?”
Chen Dong assumed Lin Junqing could not possibly refuse—that was the position of assistant to Mr. Xie. Even if it was just a life assistant, the salary and benefits would far exceed those of an executive at an ordinary company.
Lin Junqing certainly wanted to change jobs, but not to become Xie Lin’s assistant—he wanted to work far, far away from Xie Lin. He deliberately put on an insecure expression.
“I have never been a life assistant before. Perhaps it is better not to. Things that sound too good to be true rarely happen to me.”
He had to reject Chen Dong, but he needed a logical, defensible excuse to avoid raising Xie Lin’s suspicions.
