- Chapter 18 - The Demon Sect Leader Suffers from Insomnia (5)
Lin Junqing had already adjusted his mindset, offering Chu Yu a warm smile. “Brother Lin, you are up so early. Have you eaten breakfast yet? I thought about it all night after I went back. Living here alone is too lonely for you, and since I live alone in the valley as well, I planned to move in and stay with you. I hope I will not be a bother.”
Even if Chu Yu did not want him to stay, Lin Junqing would pretend not to notice and stay regardless. Regardless of why Chu Yu was playing this game, he just needed to stall him. Perhaps if they truly became friends, he could convince Chu Yu to turn over a new leaf.
Chu Yu had not expected happiness to arrive so suddenly, experiencing the transition from hell to heaven in an instant. He was not sure what happiness felt like, but when Lin Junqing suggested moving in, he knew this was it. His heart felt sweet and at ease.
Chu Yu enthusiastically took Lin Junqing’s bundle, his voice gentle. “I am overjoyed that you are moving in. How could you ever be a bother?”
Chu Yu walked toward the bamboo hut with one hand holding Lin Junqing’s bundle and the other draped over his shoulder. Lin Junqing remarked to the System, “Chu Yu is quite familiar for someone we just met. If only he were not the leader of the Demon Sect.” The System remained calm. “Do not be deceived, Host. This is all a performance. As the leader of the Demon Sect, his heart must be filled with darkness. I still advise you to flee.”
In the absence of a plan to deal with Chu Yu, Lin Junqing did not want to run. Chu Yu placed Lin Junqing’s clothes in the room, suddenly frustrated that he did not have any of his own to place alongside them. Every piece of Lin Junqing’s clothing carried that faint, grassy scent; if their clothes were mixed together, his own would surely absorb that soothing aroma.
While Chu Yu was in the room, Lin Junqing consulted the System on how to handle him. “I cannot kill him directly, but I could scheme against him. What kind of plan could force Chu Yu to meet his end?” The System was pessimistic. “Chu Yu’s martial arts are too high. Even a Grandmaster like Abbot Xuan Deng could only injure him through a surprise attack. I believe our chances of successfully scheming against him are less than one in a thousand.”
Lin Junqing pressed his lips together. Neither he nor the System was particularly bright, and scheming against a Child of Destiny was out of their league. Lin Junqing had the System post on the forum for help. The experienced systems there would surely have a plan.
The System soon returned. “Host, there is a way. The seniors say that since Chu Yu is the Demon Sect leader, why not leak his whereabouts so the entire martial arts world hunts him? Then you can find a way to gain his trust and poison him. Your blood can not only cure poison but also accelerate the maturation of toxic plants. You could certainly cultivate a mutation far more lethal than any existing poison.”
Lin Junqing understood the plan, though he found the first part unreliable. Chu Yu did not fear the martial arts world; after all, he had killed the Grandmaster Abbot Xuan Deng. Very few people in the world would dare hunt him. However, the poisoning plan seemed feasible. Since he had cured Chu Yu’s poison, he could just as easily return one.
The Medicine Immortal Valley grew many herbs, including a small number of toxic ones. Lin Junqing decided to secretly cultivate mutated toxic plants while keeping his blood’s true power hidden. He would extract the toxin and feed it to Chu Yu. Since Chu Yu was curious about his antidote pills, he would never suspect Lin Junqing’s own blood.
Lin Junqing prepared lunch in the kitchen, eager to use the mutated toxin, but he forced himself to focus. During the meal, he expected Chu Yu to be cautious, perhaps asking him to take a bite first. Instead, Chu Yu began eating as soon as the dishes were served, showing no guard at all.
“The food you prepared suits my palate perfectly, Brother Lin. Thank you for your hard work.”
Lin Junqing looked at Chu Yu’s smile, momentarily fooled into believing the trust was genuine before shaking it off. Chu Yu surely had a way to verify the food for poison. Traditional methods were often crude, like silver needles, but his refined toxin would be impossible to detect.
Lin Junqing ate mechanically. “I am returning to the valley this afternoon to retrieve some medical books. I will be back in the evening.” He reached to clear the table, not expecting Chu Yu to help. To his surprise, Chu Yu was faster.
“You cooked the meal, so I will handle the dishwashing from now on. Since we both have the surname Lin, isn’t it strange to keep calling each other Brother Lin? Do you have a courtesy name?”
Lin Junqing was almost fooled by Chu Yu’s sincere expression and trusted gaze. He shook his head. “I do not. Do you?”
Chu Yu stacked the bowls. “I have the single name Lin. If you do not mind, may I choose a courtesy name for you?” Chu Yu glowed with delight at the thought. Lin Junqing frowned. “Is that Lin as in rain and wood?” He wondered if all these coincidences meant something. Was Chu Yu really unrelated to Xie Lin?
“System, is there any possibility that Chu Yu is Xie Lin?” The System was resolute. “Impossible. Absolutely impossible. These are just coincidences.”
Lin Junqing felt a wave of sadness. He nodded absentmindedly, agreeing to the courtesy name. Both he and the System had forgotten that one’s courtesy name is typically bestowed by an elder or a spouse. Chu Yu looked at Lin Junqing with immense tenderness. “You are as clear and cool as the moon, and your name has Qing in it. How about Qingyue?”
Lin Junqing felt the name was too gentle and feminine, but he was in a rush to return to the valley and agreed. “Qingyue sounds lovely. I like it. Thank you, Brother Lin.”
When he returned to the valley, Lin Junqing asked the System, “What is Chu Yu’s game? Does he really trust me this much, or is he simply indifferent to my actions?”
The System guessed, “He probably does not care. Host, go and dig up that toxic plant I selected. It has lush leaves and will surely mutate well.”
Since no one noticed, Lin Junqing dug up the toxic herb using a rice bowl he found in the kitchen and brought it back to his room. Behind locked doors, he used his blood to water it. He watched in amazement as the plant turned deep green, withered, and finally sprouted pale red buds.
“This Heart-Devouring Grass has mutated. If you accidentally kill Chu Yu with it, the Heavenly Dao will punish you. You cannot kill the Child of Destiny directly, or you will suffer the karmic backlash.”
Lin Junqing took the advice to heart. He could not be sure of the toxicity, so he would not rush to feed it to Chu Yu. He processed the plant into longan-sized pills, which he stored in a small porcelain bottle, and spiked them with ginseng water so they resembled common ginseng pills. Even his master would not be able to tell the difference.
Returning to the bamboo hut, he found Chu Yu had cleaned everything and prepared a wild chicken and a bowl of wild fruit. Chu Yu beamed. “Qingyue, I gathered these fruits this afternoon. They taste quite good. Try them; if you like them, I will pick more tomorrow.”
Lin Junqing ate, wondering how Chu Yu had found fruit out of season. “They are delicious. Where did you find them?”
“System, what is Chu Yu doing? He’s cleaning, cooking, and picking fruit like he’s planning to live here forever. He is the leader of the Demon Sect; why is he acting so committed to this performance?”
Chu Yu told him he had found them in a cave near the cliff. While Lin Junqing prepared dinner, Chu Yu insisted on tending the fire. Lin Junqing felt watched, so he cooked normally, deciding not to use the Heart-Devouring poison yet. He noticed a trunk in the room that had not been there earlier, filled with both their clothes.
“Brother Lin, are you planning to stay here for a long time?”
Chu Yu answered, “You are my savior, and we get along so well. We are on first-name terms, so calling me Brother Lin is too formal. I am likely older than you, so why not call me Brother Lin?”
Lin Junqing did not care about the formalities. If Chu Yu wanted to play brothers, he would play along. As long as Chu Yu did not kill anyone, he did not care if they were brothers or father and son. He called him Brother Lin obediently.
“The situation outside is still chaotic. My internal energy is unstable, so I would like to stay in the valley area for a while. That is why I went out to buy some daily necessities today. I noticed your clothes were old, so I bought you a few new sets as well.”
The thought of Lin Junqing wearing the clothes he bought left Chu Yu feeling incredibly satisfied.
