The Supporting Female Lead Chooses to Mark the Villain [Rebirth] - Chapter 99.2
was worse than ever—the awakened Sang Nian feared and resented her. Shen Zui could find all sorts of negative emotions in her eyes, but she couldn’t see the familiar love.
“I understand.”
The doctor, accustomed to life and death, was still affected by Shen Zui’s sadness. She sighed. “She’s recovering well now. We can observe her for another two days and then consider discharge. Generally, in this situation, we recommend returning her to a familiar environment, which is more conducive to her regaining her memories.” She took a sip of water. “I once had a patient…”
While they were talking, in the SVIP ward on the other side of the hallway, Sang Nian was having a standoff with the little “shorty” at the door.
She stared warily at Sunny, as if afraid the child, who wasn’t even two years old, would do something startling. The little girl was smart and sharp; she could clearly feel the change in Sang Nian’s attitude. The Mommy who used to be so indulgent and doting was now looking at her with an unfamiliar guardedness. Even when they first met in the cafe abroad, Sang Nian hadn’t looked at her like that.
Thinking of this, Sunny could no longer control her emotions. Large tears rolled down her cheeks. Yet, she remembered Shen Zui’s instructions and didn’t dare cry loudly, staring at Sang Nian with red, swollen, and aggrieved eyes while sobbing softly.
Sang Nian: “…” She felt that despite all her defenses, she couldn’t withstand the other’s “attack.” “I didn’t touch you! I… I’m not the one who made you cry!”
Sunny let out a “wu” sound, almost wailing, but held it back at the crucial moment.
Sang Nian: “…” If the child had thrown a tantrum, she might have felt better. But seeing this angel-like girl staying at the door as requested, keeping her distance and crying quietly, made her heart ache.
However, Shen Zui had told her that this little angel was their child. A bolt from the blue would be an understatement! Her relationship with Shen Zui already terrified her; having a child together was a horror movie!
Sang Nian had once wondered if she had traveled to another world, into someone else’s body. Here, although everyone had the same names, the Shen family and Shen Zui weren’t like the ones in her memory. But the truth was, this was her original world.
Starting from age 18, she and the original Sang Nian of this body had taken completely different paths. In her memory, she chose to go to sea with Xi You, eventually jumping into the water to save someone and developing a lung condition. At the same time, the original owner of this body abandoned Xi You, went home, and marked the sick Shen Zui in the small building.
Every time Sang Nian thought of this, her feelings were complicated. She strongly agreed with breaking ties with Xi You, but Shen Zui… why on earth did she go and provoke Shen Zui?!
“Hic—” The little angel cried so hard she couldn’t help but hiccup, her small face turning red.
The nanny standing outside felt her heart breaking. She leaned down to pick her up, but the girl struggled and refused. Sang Nian didn’t want to pay attention to them, but her heart couldn’t settle.
To help her regain her memory, Mo Huai had brought a tablet so she could watch her previous movies. The movies this body had starred in were of very high quality. Sang Nian had already watched two with great interest, not wanting to miss a single frame. she believed the original soul of this body had acting skills even higher than her own. But now, as she watched the supporting characters talking on screen, she suddenly realized she had forgotten what plot had happened in the last half hour.
“…” Sang Nian rubbed her brow.
“I don’t want to go, waaa—” Sunny cried, “I don’t want you to hold me either, I, I want… waaa…”
Sang Nian looked at her and met the girl’s expectant gaze. She sighed. “…Stop crying.”
“Mhm.” Sunny covered her mouth with both hands, trying not to make a sound.
Sang Nian rubbed her throbbing temples. She knew this couldn’t go on. She waved to the girl. “Come here.”
Sunny looked at her timidly. She lowered her hands. “Can… can I come over?”
“You can.” Sang Nian almost wanted to slap herself. She didn’t know how she could have said such a bastardly thing like “Don’t come over” to such a cute little angel half an hour ago.
Sunny sniffled and even asked the nanny to help wipe her face before carefully walking to Sang Nian’s bedside. She was barely taller than the bed. She gripped the edge of the bed and looked at Sang Nian expectantly.
“Mommy…”
Sang Nian’s head started to ache again. She turned and picked the girl up, letting her sit on her lap. Sunny tried to push her luck and reach for an embrace, but she was held in place by Sang Nian’s hand on her shoulder. The little girl pouted, looking like she was about to cry again.
“Don’t cry!” Sang Nian spoke first. She sighed. “Why do you love crying so much? You little crybaby!”
Sunny tried to hold it back. “I… I don’t…” She rubbed her face and tried her best to pull the corners of her mouth into a forced smile.
Sang Nian smiled, yet felt a strange sense of sadness. A child this age should be noisy and pampered like a lawless princess. She didn’t know how Shen Zui had raised her, but Sunny was so well-behaved and cute.
“Don’t come tomorrow.” She reached out and carefully touched Sunny’s cheek. “This is a hospital, and the smell is bad. Why does a little kid like you come here every day?”
“But…” Sunny kicked her legs. “I want to be with Mommy…”
“Don’t you have your mama?” The skin felt so good that Sang Nian couldn’t help but pinch it again. She muttered, “Isn’t your mama enough? She’s so pretty and seems to have a good temper.”
Because she was a bit distracted, Sang Nian didn’t notice the strength of her fingers. When she realized, a small patch of Sunny’s cheek had been pinched red, almost the same color as her swollen eyes. She felt a bit guilty and wanted to withdraw her hand, but the little girl proactively rubbed her cheek against her palm.
“I want Mama, and I want Mommy.”
Sang Nian felt inexplicably guilty. She whispered, “Having one is good enough; don’t be so greedy.”
Sunny didn’t understand. “What?”
Sang Nian sighed. She met the girl’s eyes. “When I was a child, I didn’t have any elders who doted on me so much. Look, didn’t I grow up healthy and strong?” As she spoke, she touched Sunny’s little braid. She found she was becoming quite fond of the little kid, which wasn’t a good sign. “Stay obediently by Shen Zui’s side. Maybe I’ll visit you when I have time.”
Through the accounts of those around her and the information she found online over the past few days, Sang Nian had to face reality, even if it was hard to accept. She didn’t plan on continuing to live with Shen Zui, nor could she fall in love with someone who was an enemy in her memory.
Fortunately, the owner of this body was smarter and more capable than her. Although she was only 26, she had already fulfilled the wish Sang Nian had dreamed of in her previous life—breaking ties with the Shen family. Sang Nian fantasized that she could take this opportunity to start her new life!
This time, Xi You wouldn’t have the chance to spread rumors about her. This time, no enemies could push her off a tall building while she was down. She would have a bright future!
As if sensing something, Sunny suddenly grabbed her finger tightly.
“Mommy…” Her voice was soft and heavy. “Do you not want Nini anymore?”
Sang Nian: “…”
“Do you not… do you not want Mama anymore either?”
Sang Nian’s heart suddenly ached.
Sunny took advantage of her distraction to throw her arms around her neck, hugging her tightly. “No! I don’t want that!” The little girl somehow found the strength to hold her so tightly that she couldn’t resist. “You promised me, waaa, Mommy promised. We… we’ll be together.”
“I’m sorry,” Sang Nian murmured in a voice only she could hear. “I’m sorry, but we aren’t the same kind of people. We…”
Sunny’s crying covered the sound of footsteps entering the room. When Sang Nian felt the weight lift from her body, she looked up to see that Shen Zui had taken Sunny back into her arms.
Shen Zui carefully tidied the girl’s wrinkled clothes, her voice of criticism gentle. “Disturbing Mommy’s rest again?”
Sunny whimpered, “No… I didn’t…”
“Do you remember what Mama told you last night?” Shen Zui wiped away her tears. “If you cry more, Mommy will be very sad when she remembers it in the future.”
“Waaa—” Sunny buried her head in Shen Zui’s shoulder.
Shen Zui patted her back. “We don’t want to make Mommy sad later, okay?”
Sang Nian looked up, and their eyes met in the air. Although she didn’t want to admit it, Sang Nian was still uncontrollably attracted to Shen Zui’s appearance. At first, she was just stunned, but later, knowing that Shen Zui was the patient in the small building, she was more curious.
They were too different. Shen Zui was completely different from the image in her memory.
They say “being loved makes one grow flesh and blood.” In this completely different life trajectory, had Shen Zui relied on the love she provided to grow into the brilliant woman she was today? Such a beautiful person was nurtured by her, little by little.
Loving someone is like raising a flower.
Sang Nian felt an inexplicable sense of pride.
“But… but Nini can’t help it…” Sunny’s crying had subsided. “I can’t help it, what should I do?”
Shen Zui didn’t look away from Sang Nian as she spoke to the girl in her arms. “Then think about how you want Mommy to comfort you after she gets better.”
Sunny: “Mhm…” She seemed to actually think about it, temporarily forgetting her sadness.
Shen Zui stayed and talked with her for a while. After the crying fit, the exhausted little girl fell asleep in her arms. Shen Zui sat in the nearby chair, holding her.
She patted Sunny while speaking softly to Sang Nian on the bed. “The doctor said your wound is healing well. We’ll observe for two more days. If there are no issues… the day after tomorrow, I want to take you out of the hospital.”
Sang Nian was already tired of the hospital. “Okay!” After a pause, she asked, “Where am I staying?”
Shen Zui seemed to read her mind. “You’ll be with us, living in the Xinze Villa district.”
Sang Nian: “…” She didn’t know how to speak. “I, well…”
“But that’s not a good place for you to recover,” Shen Zui said again. “There’s a two-story apartment next to A University.” Shen Zui hadn’t considered that place when she returned to the country, mainly because she wanted a better environment for Sunny. But in fact, although the old apartment wasn’t as spacious as the villa, it was more than enough for raising a child.
More importantly, the family of three had lived in the villa for less than a month and hadn’t made many memories. In comparison, the apartment was more suitable for helping Sang Nian regain her memory.
“We’re moving back there.”
