- Chapter 60 - Niannian’s Variety Show Begins
In stark contrast to the frigid winter of the Northern Hemisphere, the climate in the Southern Hemisphere was comfortable and the scenery pleasant.
When Shen Nian stepped out of the airport, a warm, moist breeze brushed against her face. Her spirit rallied, and the fatigue from the ten-hour flight was instantly swept away. The production crew had arranged for a car to pick them up, and filming began the moment they met.
“As You Please uses a continuous live-streaming format,” explained Peng Bo, a popular comedian and a regular cast member who was serving as their driver. “You two haven’t been on this type of live show before, have you?”
“No,” Xi You replied, her face flushing slightly as she waved nervously at the camera. “Hello everyone. I am Xi You.”
Peng Bo chuckled. “Hey, where’s Shen Nian?”
They looked around and realized Shen Nian had already circled to the back of the car, following the staff’s instructions to load the luggage. Seeing Xi You still tugging her pink suitcase, Shen Nian reached out. “Give it to me.”
Xi You looked up, accidentally meeting her gaze, before quickly looking away. She pushed the suitcase over and whispered, “Thank you.”
“You’re welcome,” Shen Nian replied. After ensuring the luggage was secure, she pressed down the trunk lid.
Peng Bo was standing right by the side of the car with the primary camera. As the lid closed, it perfectly framed Shen Nian’s upper body. “Shen Nian, say hello to the audience.”
Shen Nian snapped back to attention and curled her lips into a smile toward the lens. In the summer breeze by the waves, the slightly sweat-dampened girl wiped her brow and gave a serious introduction. “Hello, I am Shen Nian. Please take care of me.”
Peng Bo let out a “Whoo-hoo!” and whistled.
“What’s wrong?” Shen Nian asked, puzzled.
“Tsk tsk,” Peng Bo sighed from behind the camera. “With a face like yours, I don’t know how many Omegas you’re going to enchant!”
He wasn’t wrong. In the live-stream chat, the comments were flooding the screen:
“It was worth waking up early on the weekend just to see Shen Nian. This face… totally worth it!”
“My heart melted when she said hello!”
“Sisters, don’t be fooled! Such a handsome female Alpha already has a girlfriend! Oh no, I can’t stop looking…”
“The person above reminded me—they’re in the same frame! So sweet!”
The Subtle Interrogation
During the drive, Peng Bo conducted a casual interview. Toward the end, the seemingly genial comedian finally revealed his true intent.
“Speaking of which, you two…” He grinned. “This shouldn’t be your first time traveling together, right?”
“It’s not,” Xi You told the camera.
“Then when was the last time? Any interesting stories to share?”
Xi You went silent, looking hesitant. She turned to look at Shen Nian cautiously. This reaction confused Shen Nian; logically, Xi You should have jumped at the chance to solidify their “ambiguous” relationship. Why was she silent now?
Shen Nian thought for a moment. “The last time was likely for Xi You’s birthday. We were planning to go out to sea…”
“Birthday? Were you celebrating with her privately?” Peng Bo interjected.
The chat exploded with “Oohs.”
Shen Nian shook her head calmly. “No. There were several other friends.”
Peng Bo’s smile stiffened slightly.
“Yes…” Xi You added softly. “Later, because of the weather, we went home early.”
Shen Nian looked at her in surprise. Xi You tucked a lock of hair behind her ear and gave her a small, cautious smile. “Right?”
Shen Nian withdrew her expression and nodded. “Yes.”
The Mission: The Tea Restaurant
The filming location was a small island with a large Chinese immigrant population. They were greeted by the other regular cast members at a small courtyard. Among them was Fang Yangqi, a male Alpha and idol-drama actor who served as the show’s “visual lead.”
Fang Yangqi felt a bit threatened by Shen Nian’s photos, but seeing her in person, he felt relieved that he was taller and more “masculine.” He offered to carry Xi You’s bags, and they went off chatting while Shen Nian went to her room alone.
The mission was revealed: a local Hong Kong-style tea restaurant needed help while the owners were away. Five people would stay at the restaurant, while two would take a mobile food truck to sell silk-stocking milk tea.
Naturally, the group paired Shen Nian and Xi You together for the truck.
“It’s a pity they’re both girls,” Fang Yangqi remarked snidely. “Usually it’s ‘handsome man and beautiful lady.’ If we run into customers who prefer men, Shen Nian won’t be much help.”
Peng Bo caught the attitude. “What, Xiao Fang? Do you want to go with Xi You instead?”
“No, just saying,” Fang Yangqi smirked, stretching his legs out in front of Shen Nian. “I’m just not as close to Xi You as Shen Nian is.”
Night in the Courtyard
As an Alpha, Shen Nian took on the heavy lifting. While she went to get tea leaves and milk powder, Xi You stayed behind to wash the massive milk tea pot.
When Shen Nian returned, she found Xi You clumsily soaking herself. Her thin white t-shirt was wet and clinging to her skin, becoming translucent under the courtyard lights.
“I’ll do it,” Shen Nian said, stepping in.
“I wanted to help, but I can’t seem to do anything right,” Xi You sighed, sitting on the steps and watching Shen Nian’s tall figure. “It’s always been like this between us—you’re always the one taking care of me.”
The camera in the corner glowed red, recording everything.
The audience loved it: “Shen Nian is so protective! She won’t let Xi You do any hard work.” “The cold-outside-warm-inside Alpha and the sweet Omega—they’re the perfect couple!”
The Breaking Point
Shen Zui, just off work, was lying on her sofa watching the live stream. She frowned, trying to ignore the comments. Finally, she couldn’t help it and sent her first-ever bullet-chat comment:
[They are just relatives.]
A “shipper” immediately replied:
“So what if they’re relatives? Shen Nian is adopted; there’s no blood relation!” * “Don’t you think a romance that breaks through nominal shackles is sweeter?”
“Blessings to the couple!”
These words pierced through Shen Zui’s eyes and struck the deepest part of her heart.
“Breaks through nominal shackles.” “They can be together.” “Blessings.”
Shen Zui felt a wave of suffocation. She loosened her collar and gasped for air. So… this kind of feeling can actually be recognized and blessed?
Suddenly, her phone vibrated violently. It was a call from her Mother.
After a long time, her hand trembling, Shen Zui pressed [Decline].
