Chapter 28: People Lacking Boundaries Have No Sense of Observation…
The children’s welfare home was nearly an hour’s drive from the city center.
When Tang Ran and Qiu Yuan arrived, Xia Xin’er’s car had just pulled into a parking space as well. Along with Xia Xin’er were five other members of her public welfare team. Their team came to the orphanage every month. In addition to donating supplies, they organized games and crafts, or arranged for the children to participate in community activities to help them better integrate into social life.
“Sister Ranran!”
Xia Xin’er couldn’t wait to wave at Tang Ran as soon as she saw her. Tang Ran led Qiu Yuan over to their commercial vehicle and introduced the two to each other. Qiu Yuan was a social butterfly similar to Miao Tiantian; within just a few sentences, she was already on familiar terms with the shy Xia Xin’er.
Upon hearing that they were there to celebrate birthdays for the children today, Qiu Yuan immediately contacted a professional team specializing in children’s birthday event planning. Both Xia Xin’er and Tang Ran gave her a big thumbs-up. This girl was truly thorough in her arrangements.
While the three were chatting, another team of volunteers arrived. Judging by the T-shirts they wore, Tang Ran recognized them as a volunteer group from Jiangcheng University (Jingda).
“Miss Xia.”
As the group got out of their vehicle, a handsome male student walked over with a smile to greet Xia Xin’er. Tang Ran was also a graduate of Jingda, so she recognized that face.
Fang Kun. The President of the Student Union at Jiangcheng University—academically excellent and possessor of a handsome face, he was one of the university’s legendary figures. Tang Ran remembered him not because of his looks, but because his scandalous rumors were widespread. He was a “player” who flirted with everyone but committed to no one, constantly changing female companions but never admitting to having a girlfriend.
“Captain Fang,” Xia Xin’er gave a faint smile. They had cooperated on several charity events with the Jingda volunteer team, so they were acquaintances.
Fang Kun glanced at their commercial van and said brightly, “Miss Xia has brought quite a lot of supplies again.” School clubs couldn’t raise much money; they mostly brought basic necessities, which were far less than what Xia Xin’er’s group provided.
He flashed a brilliant smile, revealing two canine teeth. “And this must be Miss Tang. My name is Fang Kun. I’ve always wanted to meet you. I’m truly lucky to have Miss Xia’s introduction today.”
With one sentence, he managed to compliment both of them. Tang Ran could finally understand why this guy was such a “scumbag” yet could still hold a top spot on the Jingda forum’s male deity rankings for so long. Sunny, handsome, and sweet-talking—he was indeed a pro at coaxing naive female college students.
In the short time they had been talking, Tang Ran could already sense several unfriendly gazes. She glanced out of the corner of her eye; those looks were coming from a few female students in the Jingda group.
“Hello,” Tang Ran nodded coldly. Since the gender was wrong, she had zero interest.
A smart person understands someone’s intent in one sentence and knows when to advance or retreat. Seeing that she wasn’t being warm, Fang Kun didn’t push for further conversation. He cheerfully called over two classmates to help Xia Xin’er’s team move the supplies.
“We haven’t even finished moving our own stuff, yet they go to help others,” a girl with freckles in the Jingda group muttered with dissatisfaction. She didn’t dare say it to Fang Kun’s face, only grumbling in a low voice after they had walked away.
Another tall girl beside her curled her lip. “Well, what can we do? We weren’t born lucky like the second Miss of the Xia family.” Her tone was sour, a mix of envy and jealousy.
They joined the volunteer team not just for the extra credits, but also for the chance to get close to Fang Kun. Even knowing Fang Kun wouldn’t pick them, they couldn’t stand him being nice to other girls. Particularly after the recent events, they noticed Fang Kun treated Xia Xin’er differently, making them intensely jealous.
“No wonder Senior Fang organized a trip to the welfare home today; turns out Miss Xia was coming.”
Ye Xiaoyu carried two bags of supplies, a look of realization appearing on her face, as if she had just suddenly figured it out. She was also a Jingda graduate and had some acquaintance with Fang Kun, so she had tagged along with the volunteer team this time. However, she wasn’t here for Fang Kun; she was here for someone else.
Hearing her words, the jealousy in the eyes of the two girls toward Xia Xin’er deepened.
Sensible people take the hint; those without boundaries are particularly unobservant.
Take Ye Xiaoyu, for instance.
As Tang Ran and the others were walking inside, Ye Xiaoyu was just coming back out after setting down some supplies. As if she had never had a conflict with Tang Ran, she smiled at them and asked Xia Xin’er, “Did Senior Shuyang not come today?”
Xia Xin’er frowned, her face darkening. “What do you want with her now?”
She didn’t like Ye Xiaoyu. Initially, there was no reason; she just disliked her at first sight. Later, Ye Xiaoyu used the excuse of being a junior to contact Lu Shuyang constantly. Once, she even called Lu Shuyang at 10:30 PM, claiming she wasn’t feeling well. Xia Xin’er realized that her dislike stemmed from Ye Xiaoyu’s habit of acting like a pitiful, fragile victim. Being in poor health herself, Xia Xin’er loathed people who were perfectly healthy but spent their days acting weak and delicate.
Ye Xiaoyu’s smile stiffened. She hadn’t expected Xia Xin’er to drop even the facade of politeness. While feeling she had lost face, her first instinct was to look at Tang Ran. She expected to see a mocking expression, but the reality was that Tang Ran was busy talking to Qiu Yuan, paying no attention to their conversation at all.
Just like in the hospital the day before yesterday, aside from that initial sarcastic remark, Tang Ran treated her as if she were thin air.
Ye Xiaoyu bit her lip, recalling the time Tang Ran had belittled her at the Song Group. At that time, she was just an “insignificant person.” Back then, she thought Tang Ran was saying it just to humiliate her. Looking back now, she realized Tang Ran actually meant it.
Recognizing this fact made Ye Xiaoyu feel even more humiliated. She had tested into Jingda from a small town and entered the Song Group based on her excellence and hard work. Ye Xiaoyu believed that except for her background and her face, there was nothing she was inferior to Tang Ran in. Tang Ran was just a pretty, pampered flower; she was the one who truly deserved Song Wuqi.
She wanted to prove she was better than Tang Ran, but Tang Ran sat high above, never even putting her in her eyes. And then there was Xia Xin’er. If she had known Lu Shuyang wasn’t coming today, she wouldn’t have bothered trying to win favor with Xia Xin’er.
“Don’t make that face, as if I’m bullying you,” Xia Xin’er said with disgust, then grabbed Tang Ran and the other girl and walked right past her.
Ye Xiaoyu gritted her teeth in hatred. These “parasites” living off their families were just lucky to be born into wealth; what gave them the right to be so arrogant? Why did every single one of them look down on her?
As long as she, Ye Xiaoyu, worked hard, one day she would have more money and a higher status than any of them. Clenching her fists, Ye Xiaoyu stared darkly at the backs of the departing group.
When that day came, she would definitely take back all the humiliation she received today!
