Chapter 10: I Still Don’t Know Sister’s Name…
Gossip was the regulator of Miao Tiantian’s otherwise dull life. She was always the first to get the “tea” on the fresh scandals within Jiangcheng’s prominent families.
Miao Tiantian had heard the name Song Zhixu mentioned by many. It was always met with unanimous praise—terms like “young and promising” followed her everywhere. There had never been a single whisper regarding her private life. If there were a ranking for Jiangcheng’s top young elites, Song Zhixu would undoubtedly be at the top.
When Tiantian first brought up Song Wuqi’s “youngest aunt,” Tang Ran didn’t react immediately.
“It’s Song Zhixu!” Tiantian clapped her hands, convinced her suggestion was brilliant.
“I know that,” Tang Ran replied. It wasn’t that she didn’t know who Song Zhixu was; she just wasn’t close to her.
Tiantian, sensing potential, hooked her arm around Tang Ran and began a point-by-point analysis. “Look, if the marriage alliance is unavoidable, let’s just swap the target. We switch to the aunt, Song Zhixu. Her looks aside—Song Wuqi looks like a ‘budget version’ next to her. Then there’s capability: Song Zhixu is the CEO of the entire Song Group, while Song Wuqi is just a small branch manager. They aren’t even in the same league.”
Tang Ran nodded with every point.
“And then there’s the status,” Tiantian continued, her excitement peaking. “Song Zhixu is Song Wuqi’s aunt. Once you marry her, when Song Wuqi sees you, she’ll have to call you ‘Auntie.’ Imagine that scene—wouldn’t that be satisfying?”
“Satisfying,” Tang Ran agreed, giving a thumbs up. “Your logic is sound. But here’s the real question…” Tang Ran hooked her arm back around Tiantian and delivered a soul-searching query: “Song Zhixu is so outstanding. Why on earth would she agree to let me swap the marriage alliance to her?”
If a tycoon like Song Zhixu wanted to marry, the line of women more qualified than Tang Ran would stretch around the Song Group building twice. If she could actually be with Song Zhixu, it would be like having the ultimate “cheat code” in a game; she could turn Song Wuqi into dust in seconds.
Unfortunately, based on the relative strength of the Tang and Song families, the only reason Elder Song even agreed to her marriage with Song Wuqi was out of old sentiment for her grandfather.
While Tiantian’s suggestion was a bit far-fetched, the distraction made Tang Ran feel much better. She hadn’t felt this relaxed in a long time.
Miao Tiantian blinked, let go of her, and rubbed her chin thoughtfully. “Good question. Let me think… Okay, if nothing else works, we use the Honey Trap!”
“Stop dreaming!” Tang Ran poked Tiantian’s forehead. “If a honey trap worked, it still wouldn’t be my turn, okay?” Given Song Zhixu’s status, if she were susceptible to beauty, Jiangcheng would be full of people throwing themselves at her.
“You won’t know unless you try,” Tiantian lifted Tang Ran’s chin, looking at her face with confidence. “After all, this face of yours is top-tier.”
“Are we still getting dinner or what?” Tang Ran laughed, swiping her hand away.
The two made their way from the apartment to a restaurant, then a mall, and finally ended up at a bar. After two quick drinks, Tiantian dragged Tang Ran onto the dance floor. Amidst the flashing lights, Tiantian spotted a familiar face—the wavy-haired woman from the elevator. She danced her way over, and both women laughed in surprise. “What a coincidence!”
Tang Ran, finding the noise a bit too much, left the dance floor for the outdoor terrace. The “He” Bar had excellent soundproofing; behind the glass doors was a thumping dance floor, but the terrace was a soothing lounge playing jazz.
Ordering a sweet wine, Tang Ran leaned against the glass railing. She thought about the Tang family’s situation: the supplier crisis, executives fleeing with funds, overdue loans, and the breaking point of their capital chain. Even without Song Wuqi’s betrayal, the Tang family would have struggled. But that didn’t mean she would let Song Wuqi off the hook.
She pulled out her phone, typed in a number, and attached a photo of Song Wuqi and Ye Xiaoyu together. Her finger hovered over the ‘send’ button, then she paused and swiped left to delete it. Not yet. It’s not time for the dogs to eat each other just yet.
She turned around, her gaze drifting through the glass toward the bar.
There, on a wooden high stool, sat a woman in an ivory-white, form-fitting dress with a pearl and diamond belt. Her long legs were crossed, silver-framed glasses sat on her nose, and a mask added a layer of mystery to her elegant aura. She hadn’t ordered a drink; she was simply chatting with the bartender. Even without showing her full face, her temperament was striking.
Tang Ran watched as two men and a woman tried to hit on her, only to leave looking dejected. Tang Ran’s smile widened.
Then, a young girl in a floral dress approached the woman. The girl looked shy, playing the “innocent” card to ask for her WeChat. When the woman politely declined, the girl wouldn’t let it go. “Sister, just help me out. My friends are watching… I’ll delete it right after I show them, I promise not to bother you!”
Suddenly, a hand holding a wine glass cut between them. The girl flinched back.
Tang Ran set her glass on the bar, looking the girl up and down with a smirk. “If you can’t handle a drink, why come to a bar?”
The girl stammered, “My friends dragged me here…”
“Makes sense,” Tang Ran nodded, then turned to the woman behind her. “But Sister, does this girl know how to spell ‘moral kidnapping’?”
The girl turned red. “Who are you? This is between me and her!”
Tang Ran tilted her head, looking at the masked woman, and let out a sweet, deliberate “Sister~”
Song Zhixu’s eyes crinkled with a faint smile. Tang Ran winked at her, draped an arm over her shoulder, and looked at the girl provocatively. “What do you think?”
The girl, assuming they were a couple, realized she had no chance. She snapped, “Fine! It’s just a WeChat. So what if you have a girlfriend? You’re probably just here ‘fishing’ for a group game anyway.” Her words turned vulgar.
“You’ve clearly eaten too much junk food; your head is full of trash,” Tang Ran countered. She didn’t want to waste more time and looked for security.
By chance, two guards were nearby. Tang Ran waved them over. “This person is harassing guests. Aren’t you going to do something?”
The guards glanced at Song Zhixu behind her and immediately told the girl to leave.
“Why me? I’ll say she harassed me!” the girl screamed as she was hauled out.
“Ma’am,” the guard said bluntly, “the person you were harassing is our boss.”
The girl went silent and stomped away in regret.
Inside the bar, Tang Ran felt thirsty and downed a bottle of mineral water. Song Zhixu stood by, watching her finish before saying, “Thank you.”
“No need, no need,” Tang Ran waved it off. “You’ve helped me twice, Sister.”
“Didn’t you treat me to dinner?” Song Zhixu smiled. “The food was very good.”
“I’m glad you liked it… By the way, we’ve met several times, and I still don’t know your name?” Tang Ran held out her hand. “I’m Tang Ran. ‘Tang’ as in the Tang Dynasty, ‘Ran’ as in dye.”
Song Zhixu’s eyes curved. She reached up, removed her mask, and shook Tang Ran’s hand.
“Song Zhixu.”
Tang Ran’s eyes widened. It felt like a bolt of lightning had struck her brain. She accidentally squeezed the plastic water bottle in her hand so hard it crinkled, spraying water all over her hand.
“Song… Song… Aunt… Song…” Tang Ran stuttered twice before landing on a title. “Sister Song!”
Calling her “Auntie” was a habit from her marriage in the previous life. But technically, they were of the same generation.
