- Chapter 29 - Ning on Top, Lin on Bottom
The devil training officially began.
The training lasted for one month, with a daily schedule as dense as a string of firecrackers—pop, pop, pop. Even the break times were squeezed until not a single drop of free time remained.
In the afternoon, the first period was a class meeting held in the university’s public lecture hall. This was an open session attended by all the intensive training students from both the tenth and eleventh grades.
When Lin Yan and Ning Youji arrived, the classroom was already packed.
“Brother Lin, over here! Over here!” Lu Xiangshi waved his hand at them.
Once they drew near, Lu Xiangshi grinned as if seeking credit. “See how well I treat you guys? I have already saved your seats.”
Lin Yan looked at the sea of black heads in front of him, then back at the seats provided, and was moved to laughter by the absurdity. He raised a hand and lightly swatted the boy’s buzz-cut head, caught between tears and laughter. “How does this count as saving seats?”
Lu Xiangshi rubbed his head and chuckled. “Don’t you like it back here?”
Lin Yan did not argue. He sat in the window seat, and Ning Youji sat beside him.
On the other side of the classroom, students from the Nancheng Affiliated High School cast their gazes toward the back row, whispering among themselves.
“Why do you think the great scholar Ning is hanging out with the guy who ranked last in this training?”
“I heard he got in through a special quota.”
“No way, was his score really that low?”
“I am in his class and I see him asking Ning for help with problems all the time. He acts so studious; I wonder who he is putting on a show for.”
“Who else? Scholar Ning, obviously. Look at his family background; he is the heir to the number one family in Nancheng. Who wouldn’t want to climb that social ladder?”
In the front, Gu Yu turned his head and shot them a cold glance. Everyone immediately fell silent.
Because it was an open class, the school authorities—fearing Su Xue would not be able to suppress the crowd—sent along another teacher to accompany the session. As it turned out, they had worried for nothing. The moment Su Xue stepped into the room, the audience fell into a dead silence.
With ten minutes left in the lesson, Su Xue distributed an English speech draft. “As you all know, every school and grade level has an ‘Improvement Quota’ student. So, let us invite these students to come up and help us read this draft.”
The draft was handwritten by Su Xue, with different versions tailored to each grade level. Just looking at the sentences, one could tell they were extremely difficult.
The students from the improvement quota looked at one another, none of them wanting to make a fool of themselves in an open class. Su Xue did not waste words; she gave them five minutes and told them she would pick someone as soon as time was up.
She called on a sophomore from Xicheng No. 1 High School. That student stood up and spoke haltingly. Su Xue did not waste everyone’s time and gave a crisp, direct critique.
“Student, I gave you five minutes. You should have been able to memorize a one-page draft by now. Next student.”
Lin Yan put down the draft. With his current memory capacity, focusing on a single page was no trouble at all.
“Teacher, I can give it a try.”
A sophomore boy from Nancheng Affiliated High School raised his hand with a smirk. The moment he stood up, he glanced toward the window in the back row with a look of disdain and provocation.
Lin Yan leaned lazily against the window, completely ignoring the hostile gaze.
Unfortunately, this student who wanted to show off ended up failing. He started smoothly but began to stutter toward the end. It was simply too hard; the sentences were too tongue-twisting. He had originally wanted to use this chance to win some ground back for Brother Gu.
Su Xue stood on the podium and clapped her hands. She did not offer much praise but instead directly called on the teenager in the back who was nearly asleep against the windowsill.
“Student Lin Yan, you give it a try.”
Su Xue’s gaze lingered on the boy. Seeing his lazy demeanor, she was not angry; instead, she felt it was a sign of confidence.
In an instant, every head in the room snapped toward the back. Gu Yu and Ji Qing also turned their gazes. They were all aware of Lin Yan’s grades, which were described as disastrous. Normally, he would not pose a threat to them. However, if he stood out among the improvement quota students, it would be a different story.
Suddenly being called on, Lin Yan instinctively looked to his right. He happened to lock eyes with Ning Youji.
Ning Youji smiled and jerked his chin toward the podium.
The students in the classroom all saw Ning Youji smile at Lin Yan and use a small gesture to remind him. Lin Yan shot him a look and nudged him with his elbow before standing up. He picked up the draft and read it through. As he went on, he essentially shifted into an extemporaneous speech without looking at the paper.
In the front row, Gu Yu narrowed his eyes. The students who had previously suspected Lin Yan of being a slacker began to hesitate.
“That basically counts as a standard speech, right?”
“I could not even understand what he was saying toward the end; I just know his pronunciation was so standard!”
“Is he really in last place? Who started that rumor?”
Lin Yan finished just as the bell rang. Su Xue was the first to clap from the podium. “Very excellent!”
“To be able to go off-script in such a short time, I can see that Student Lin Yan has immense potential.”
Receiving praise from Su Xue was rare. Even those who were dissatisfied followed suit and clapped. Lu Xiangshi did not care about decorum; in his excitement, he slammed the table. “Brother Lin is awesome! My father is indeed my father!”
The students from No. 1 High School also started shouting one after another, “School Bully is awesome!”
“He is both the school bully and the top scholar!”
Beside him, Ning Youji tapped on his desk and held up a hand in a “6” gesture. Seeing his desk mate like this, Lin Yan let out a short, light chuckle. He had not thought much of it, but this made him feel inexplicably happy. He glanced again at the “6” still being held up. He could not help but purse his lips and smile. He thought to himself that it was childish.
A smile followed on Ning Youji’s lips as well. Gu Yu, sitting in the front, saw their interaction clearly.
Over the next week, Lin Yan found it a bit difficult to keep up with the learning pace of the class. Everyone absorbed information differently, and since learning is a cumulative process, no matter how hard one works, there is always a gap in strength.
Because of this, the System specifically provided him with a recording function. He recorded the day’s lessons and reviewed them when he got back.
The first week’s weekly test arrived. The papers were graded in class as soon as they were finished.
Su Xue originally thought that after the kid’s 103-point monthly exam, his performance in the first week might not be ideal, so she had not held high hopes. To her surprise, this kid gave her a massive shock.
Su Xue leaned on the podium and smiled. “The English scores this time are very good, exceeding my expectations.”
Someone below asked, “Are there any perfect scores?”
Su Xue replied, “Yes, and there are two.”
The classroom buzzed with excitement as students looked at Ning Youji and then at Gu Yu. Without thinking, they assumed it must be these two “Study Gods.”
As expected, Su Xue announced in the next second, “Ning Youji, perfect score. Gu Yu, perfect score. Come up and get your papers.”
Su Xue continued, “At the same time, congratulations to Student Lin Yan for achieving the greatest progress in the class: 120 points.”
The students below were quiet and not particularly surprised; a score of 120 was nothing in their eyes. After all the scores were read, Lin Yan let out a “tsk” to himself. Out of 50 students in the class, he was ranked around 38th. But one had to remember that, aside from the special quota, every student in this class was a top performer from their respective schools.
After class, a boy deliberately said loudly, “Heh, I thought he was something special after he showed off in that class meeting. Turns out it was just a flash in the pan. I do not know what the teacher was thinking, letting this kind of student come here.”
“Exactly. Maybe his skin is just thick.”
“Does he not know what he is made of? Yet he is still shamelessly clinging to Scholar Ning.”
“I do not know where he gets the face to approach Ning Youji.”
Lin Yan narrowed his eyes. In the past, he would have grabbed them by the collar and dealt with them, but things were different now. This idle gossip could no longer provoke him.
Lin Yan curled his lips into a roguish smile. “Ning Youji, I have another problem I do not understand.”
He pushed his paper over right in front of them, intentionally leaning very close. Ning Youji had also heard their conversation. Seeing Lin Yan leaning over so ostentatiously, he curled his lips, his voice carrying a trace of a smile that sounded more like he was doting on him.
“Save it. I will explain it to you when we get back after evening self-study. Also, you have made great progress in English this time.”
With that, he pulled an orange-flavored candy from his desk and placed it on Lin Yan’s desk.
Lin Yan was startled and glanced at the boy. In his heart, he gave him a thumbs-up. He thought that it was well done of his brother.
Lin Yan tore open the wrapper and popped the candy into his mouth right in front of those people. The candy made a loud crunch as Lin Yan bit into it. The group spat in annoyance and left the classroom.
Only Lin Yan knew how competitive he truly was. They were right; his current ability was still far from enough.
After this test, Lin Yan worked even harder than before, the dark circles under his eyes increasing by the day.
Time flew by, and soon it was the day before the next weekly test.
Ning Youji got up to get some water and noticed the light in Lin Yan’s room was on, the door slightly ajar. He was about to push it open when he heard voices inside.
It was the boy’s voice, raspy and tired. “Can’t you just add to Focus and Memory? I feel like the other categories are just to brush me off.”
Ning Youji’s dark eyes sank slightly. He pushed the door open a crack and saw the boy inside. Lin Yan was sitting at his desk; he was not on the phone, and there was no one else there. It was just him.
He was fiddling with the pen in his hand. “Hurry up and add it. Raise Memory to 200, I do not care what method you use.”
The System spoke in Lin Yan’s mind: “Host, your data will be unbalanced this way. I am truly powerless. Actually, adding to other data points will also give you a great improvement; it does not have to be Memory.”
After half an hour of persistent pestering, Lin Yan was truly exhausted. He let out a yawn and finally compromised. “Fine, fine, fine. Just help me distribute them evenly.”
In terms of Memory, Lin Yan had already reached a new high of 198. Being in peak condition, he calmed his emotions slightly.
The System brought up the data panel in Lin Yan’s mind. With a total of 43 free points, the System adjusted various stats to over 100.
Focus: 101 (+5)
Memory: 198
Observation: 99 (+10)
Thinking: 91 (+14)
Imagination: 93 (+14)
Learning Methods: 30
Free Points: 43 (-43)
Total Intelligence: 625 (Lower-tier Sage)
Development Level: 63%
After adding the data, Lin Yan suddenly felt his pores open up and his whole body felt comfortable; even his spirit seemed to be leaping with joy.
Ning Youji froze. He could sense a change in Lin Yan. A faint scent of Omega pheromones wafted out. Compared to before, it smelled better—or rather, it felt more powerful. Intelligence and pheromones are innate to humans; intelligence is often more intangible than pheromones, but the two are interconnected. Even for those who become Sages, they can only feel the physical sensation of intelligence in their bodies once they break the 2000 mark.
Lin Yan’s intelligence seemed to be fluctuating, and the quality was very high. His pheromones were strengthening along with his body.
Lin Yan’s nose felt a bit sore, and he let out another yawn. He turned his head and saw the person standing at the door; his pupils shrank violently.
The two stared at each other for three or four seconds.
Lin Yan laughed awkwardly. “You are not asleep yet?”
Ning Youji saw that he was a bit guilty and nodded. He did not look away, matching him blink for blink.
Lin Yan felt even more guilty and hurried to look away. “Go to sleep, it is late.”
Ning Youji asked, “Who were you talking to just now?”
He had seen it all. He had noticed something strange a long time ago, but he had not wanted to investigate. Every time there was a problem Lin Yan did not understand, he would go to sleep, and by the time he got to class, he would understand it and even be able to draw inferences. Clearly, someone was teaching him, but he could not think of who that person could be.
Lin Yan turned around, his long eyelashes trembling rapidly under the light as he pretended nothing had happened. “You must be sleepwalking. Who could I be talking to in the middle of the night? Maybe I was just reading the problem out loud. You are hearing things.”
“Is that so?” Ning Youji saw his ears turning red. Lin Yan did not dare look him in the eye and started fiddling with things. Perhaps Lin Yan did not even know that he had these small habits whenever he lied.
“Yeah.” Lin Yan played with his pen, thinking of how to brush it off; even he did not quite believe that excuse.
In the next second, however, he heard Ning Youji say, “Alright then. Goodnight.”
Then, Ning Youji backed out of his room. Lin Yan stared at the closed door for a long while, stunned, then raised an eyebrow. He wondered if that was all Ning Youji was going to ask.
The System also looked at the door through Lin Yan’s vision. It had sensed Ning Youji the moment he walked to the door and had intentionally dragged out the conversation to make him notice.
The next day, Ning Youji acted the same as usual. Lin Yan observed him all morning and found that he really did not seem to care much about last night, so he finally felt at ease.
“Brother Ning, what kind of questions do you think the homeroom teacher will ask tomorrow?” Lin Yan slumped on the desk, his head buried in the crook of his arm. Perhaps because he had slept so late last night, his voice was raspy and tired, and he lacked any energy. “How about you estimate the range, and I will take a focused look tonight?”
Ning Youji turned his head slightly. From this angle, he could see Lin Yan’s exposed neck; the skin was smooth, and the mark left there had already faded. He licked his lips; his teeth felt a bit itchy. He reached out and directly pulled the hood of the boy’s clothes over his head.
Lin Yan turned his head from his arm and smiled at him. “Brother Ning is the best.”
Just as he handed a book to Ning Youji, the phone in his desk vibrated. Lin Yan checked it; it was from the Sons Group. It was a link sent by Lu Xiangshi from the Scholar’s Mansion.
The title was: [The Days the Scholar and the School Bully Showered Dog Food from East to South]
Immediately after, the sons began to howl in the chat.
[No. 1 High] Lu Xiangshi: My fathers’ romance has spread from East City to South City!
[No. 2 High] Li Yang: Holy crap, my fathers play that hard even when they are away? Is the forum rumor about Father Ning and Father Lin living together true? So exciting!
[No. 3 High] Li Zhi: Moving in together so early, does that mean we… I do not know if I should say the rest.
[No. 5 High] Ye Qinghuan: I will say it for you! We might have a little brother very soon!
[No. 1 High] Lu Xiangshi: Hahaha, or maybe a little sister!
Firecrackers and cake emojis flooded the group.
Lin Yan read the messages and clicked on the post. They were clearly in a pure desk-mate relationship; he wondered how it got turned into this mess. In the forum, the style was abruptly uniform; if one did not know better, they would think the tide had turned, wave after wave.
1L: “I hereby declare Junior Lin and Scholar Ning my new male gods!”
2L: “Go for it, juniors! No one cares about puppy love here! Yeah! Let’s go!”
3L: “An Alpha and an Omega living under the same roof… Oh my god, oh my god, someone stop the inappropriate thoughts in my brain! This is so exciting!”
48L: “It is a romance between a slacker and a scholar! I am totally into it! I am asking for fanfiction!”
49L: “Arranged! The title will be: The Slacker Omega Studies for the Alpha.”
100L: “Requesting a beauty ranking. Ning on Top, Lin on Bottom. Vote quickly, we are only 1,000 away from overtaking second place!”
111L: “Even though I think the second place, Scholar Gu, is very handsome, still! Ning on Top, Lin on Bottom! What kind of provocative words are these? The imagery is incredible!”
Lin Yan stared at those four words, not reacting for a moment.
Ning on Top, Lin on Bottom?
Once it clicked, his ears turned pink.
“Damn it!” he thought. Who the hell wants to be on the bottom!
