- Chapter 27 - Can't Do Without Him
Gu Yu looked at their joined hands, his thin eyelids drooping slightly.
“Did this classmate not understand?” Lin Yan looked at him with a provocative glint in his eyes.
In an instant, the atmosphere in the classroom grew even more tense.
Gu Yu’s gaze slid from their hands back up to Lin Yan’s face. He smiled thinly. “Thank you for the reminder. I simply wasn’t paying attention.”
“You are welcome. We are all classmates, after all.” Lin Yan returned the smile, his dimples appearing. It gave him an air of rebellious charm. “Just be careful in the future. Don’t be so clumsy that you block someone else’s light.”
Lin Yan, usually a clumsy person himself, was now lecturing someone else on the matter.
Ning Youji remained silent throughout the exchange. Seeing Lin Yan like this stirred an indescribable emotion within him. Gu Yu narrowed his eyes, gave Lin Yan a slight nod, and turned to sit in a seat across the aisle.
Ji Qing, who had just stepped out, returned and sat next to Gu Yu. Gu Yu’s lips pressed into a thin line. He asked softly, “Ji Qing, is he the one you mentioned who is close to Ning Youji?”
“Yes,” Ji Qing whispered back. “He’s incredibly arrogant at First High. I have no idea why Ning-ge would hang out with someone like that. Especially since he’s an Omega.”
“What did you say?” Gu Yu turned his head, his dark eyes devoid of warmth as he stared at Ji Qing. “He’s an Omega?”
Ji Qing hadn’t mentioned this before. Gu Yu secretly clenched his fists. He hated Omegas—even though he was currently one himself.
Lin Yan withdrew his hand from Ning Youji’s and asked curiously, “Is this some kind of rivalry between top scholars?”
“Something like that,” Ning Youji replied casually, his face expressionless.
“Stop fooling me.” Lin Yan had long sensed that things weren’t that simple. That “long time no see” clearly indicated they knew each other, and likely quite well. Lin Yan pouted, acting indifferent. “I’m not actually interested in your business. But if it comes to a fight, I can take on ten by myself.”
“Good,” Ning Youji let out a lazy chuckle. “I’ll be sure to find you.”
“Well, since I’ve agreed to back you up,” Lin Yan pushed his test paper toward Ning Youji with an expectant look, “isn’t it time you helped me out too?”
Ning Youji looked at him with a hint of helplessness.
As they went over the problems, they sat very close. Today, Lin Yan was wearing a low-collared white shirt. He wasn’t particularly self-conscious about it, but the tooth marks left by the Alpha a few days ago were still fresh. When he leaned down to listen to the explanation, his neck was naturally exposed.
Gu Yu stared unblinkingly at the two of them. When he saw Lin Yan’s neck, his pupils dilated in shock. Ji Qing saw it too.
“Gu Yu, can you really endure this?” Ji Qing hissed, clearly feeling indignant on his behalf. “How long are you going to wait? For Ning Youji to come to you? Forget it. He hasn’t spared a thought for us all year.”
Ning Youji, Gu Yu, and Ji Qing had known each other since childhood; they were practically childhood sweethearts. In middle school, they were known as the “Three A Scholar Gods” of South City—shining stars in both academics and looks, especially Ning Youji. That changed during the summer after ninth grade when Gu Yu learned about Ning Youji’s condition and made a world-shaking move, leading to the trio’s falling out.
Gu Yu’s dark eyes flickered with various emotions before he finally pursed his lips and looked away without saying a word.
The sound of high heels echoed in the hallway. Su Xue entered the classroom, and the students all looked up. They were stunned to see her—she was a famous intelligence teacher at the Scholar’s Mansion. Even the most composed students were starting to get excited.
“Our temporary homeroom teacher can’t be Teacher Su, can it?” “Didn’t Teacher Su say she wasn’t taking students anymore? If it’s really her, we’ve hit the jackpot!” “Not only do we get to study with two scholar gods, but we also get a legendary teacher!”
Su Xue tapped the podium twice. Her voice was gentle yet carried an invisible authority. “Quiet, everyone. I am Su Xue. I’m sure most of you are familiar with me. I will be your temporary homeroom teacher for the tenth grade.”
With the confirmation, the students were overjoyed. Only Ning Youji remained cold and indifferent. Su Xue met her son’s gaze, feeling both helpless and amused; it was the first time she had seen him show such an expression. Her gaze shifted to the boy next to him, and a nearly imperceptible smile touched her lips.
“Students, lift up your beautiful faces.” Su Xue tapped the blackboard and wrote her name in chalk. “In my class, there are a few things you need to keep in mind.”
“First, I have your most recent test scores. We will have a test once a week. If you think it’s too much, you can go home now.” “Second, there is an intelligence competition in the third week. I will select two people from this class to participate. I hope you strive for it.”
After the announcements, the students weren’t discouraged; instead, they looked forward to the challenge. Lin Yan nudged Ning Youji’s arm and whispered with sincere praise, “I like this teacher. She’s direct and fair. A good teacher.”
Ning Youji looked at him for a moment. “You like her?”
“I do.” Lin Yan liked teachers who pushed them; it was the only way to spark their full potential.
Ning Youji nodded. “As long as you like her.”
On the first day, they didn’t have evening self-study. Lin Yan carried his bag toward the Omega dormitory; he was staying in Room 302. As he reached the door, he heard two people gossiping inside.
“What kind of sparks do you think will fly between Scholar Ning and Scholar Gu this time?”
Hearing Ning Youji’s title, Lin Yan subconsciously stopped to listen.
“Sparks aside, let’s see who takes the intelligence competition at the end of the month,” a higher-pitched voice said.
“That’s a century-old mystery. When Scholar Ning left South City last time, he was a dozen points behind Scholar Gu. But I heard he left before he even finished the test.”
“In terms of looks, I like Scholar Ning. He’s so incredibly Alpha. He’s my ideal type; being marked by an Alpha like that would be intoxicating.”
“Oh, please. Even Scholar Gu couldn’t catch him. You aren’t even in the same league.”
Lin Yan raised an eyebrow and walked in. “Hello.”
The two turned around—one wore a baseball cap, and the other looked like a middle schooler. They were stunned to see that their new roommate was the student who had challenged Gu Yu in class. Lin Yan scanned them and noticed their uniforms were the same as the “good student” from earlier.
“Hello,” the boy in the cap said first. “I’m Shen Jie.”
The “middle schooler” next to him was frozen. Shen Jie kicked him. “Sorry about him. He’s Wu Hao.”
Wu Hao finally snapped out of it and approached Lin Yan, sizing him up with obvious surprise. “You’re an Omega?”
Lin Yan smiled but didn’t answer directly. “I’m Lin Yan, from First High.”
“No way!” Wu Hao muttered to himself. “How can you be an Omega? I’ve been reading people for years; did I really get it wrong? You clearly have an Alpha’s scent on you.”
Lin Yan smiled. Technically, he did have Alpha pheromones on him since the tooth marks were still there. Shen Jie dragged Wu Hao back and apologized, “Sorry, he doesn’t mean anything by it.”
“It’s fine.” Lin Yan, having heard so much about the two “Scholar Gods” all day, was finally curious. “Do you know Ning Youji? And who is this ‘Scholar Gu’ you keep talking about?”
Hearing his idol’s name, Wu Hao shook off Shen Jie’s hand. “Lin Yan, right? Come in, let’s talk.”
Wu Hao was full of gossip. “Lin, what is your relationship with Scholar Ning? An Alpha and an Omega together is a bit…”
Lin Yan interrupted with a smile. “Just classmates.”
Wu Hao breathed a sigh of relief and nodded. “That’s for the best. Otherwise, you’ll just end up heartbroken. It’s destined to end badly.”
“Why?” Lin Yan grew more curious.
“The boy who spoke to you in class today is the Scholar Gu we’re talking about—Gu Yu.” Wu Hao leaned in. “He’s quite handsome, isn’t he?”
Lin Yan played along. “Very handsome!”
“Right?” Wu Hao loved the reaction. “So, if someone that handsome and smart couldn’t catch Scholar Ning, how could an ordinary Omega like us have a chance?”
“You’re saying he’s chasing my roommate?” Lin Yan was surprised for a moment. So they weren’t rivals, but suitor and sought. “Is this Gu Yu an Omega?”
Lin Yan remembered Ning Youji’s condition; if Gu Yu wasn’t an Omega, no matter how handsome he was, it wouldn’t matter.
“Yes, he is an Omega. But do you know…”
Wu Hao was about to continue when Shen Jie kicked him again. “Stop gossiping behind people’s backs.”
Wu Hao pouted. “Fine, fine. It’s not like it’s a secret anyway.”
With the story interrupted, Lin Yan lost interest. The school had already prepared the beds; there were four in the room, and Lin Yan chose a bottom bunk. Once Shen Jie went to the bathroom, Wu Hao leaned in again.
“He won’t let me say it, but I’m going to say it anyway.”
Lin Yan almost laughed. This Wu Hao was a real gossip.
“Actually, your roommate and Scholar Gu are childhood sweethearts.”
Lin Yan froze. Really? Not just a suitor, but a childhood sweetheart suitor. This was getting interesting.
“There was another one named Ji Qing,” Wu Hao continued. “The three of them were legends in South City, the quintessential ‘someone else’s kids.’ You probably want to know why Scholar Ning transferred to East City?”
Lin Yan nodded, playing the curious observer.
“Well, after one long summer break, the childhood friend suddenly went from an Alpha to an Omega and confessed to Scholar Ning.”
Lin Yan’s eyes widened. “You mean Gu Yu turned from an Alpha into an Omega?”
“Yes!”
“Is that even possible?” Lin Yan was truly shocked.
“Anything is possible with today’s technology,” Wu Hao said. “But the risk is huge. Most people wouldn’t have the guts.”
“You mean he had surgery?” Lin Yan hadn’t expected that. Such surgeries were strictly prohibited and extremely dangerous.
“Yes. One wrong move and your gland dies, or you die.” Wu Hao was about to say more when the bathroom door opened. He hissed, “Actually, we’re forbidden from talking about Scholar Gu’s business.”
Lin Yan nodded in understanding. After they all showered, Wu Hao decided Lin Yan was a good person and easy to talk to. “Lin Yan, want to go get a late-night snack? I heard the canteen here is great.”
Lin Yan intended to refuse, but thinking he had a month to spend with them, he decided it wouldn’t hurt to build some rapport.
The canteen was quite crowded. Lin Yan wasn’t hungry and just ordered a bowl of noodles. Just as he sat down, a shadow fell over him. He looked up to see Ji Qing.
Ji Qing looked down at him and raised an eyebrow. “Bully Lin, do you have a moment? Let’s talk.”
Lin Yan’s lips curled into a faint smirk. “How shall we talk?”
“Follow me.” Ji Qing had seen the temporary mark on Lin Yan’s neck and couldn’t sit still anymore. Gu Yu might be able to endure it, but he couldn’t.
Lin Yan narrowed his eyes and stood up, meeting Ji Qing’s gaze with his own inherent defiance. “Let’s talk then.”
Lin Yan’s roommates didn’t dare breathe. Even if Ji Qing was slightly lower in status than Ning Youji, he was still far above them. And Ji Qing had just called Lin Yan a “bully.” They were stunned as the two left the canteen.
Wu Hao swallowed and looked at Shen Jie. “Did I… did I just spend all night chatting with a school bully?” In their eyes, school bullies were academic failures with violent tendencies.
Shen Jie was equally confused. A school bully in an intelligence training program?
Lin Yan followed Ji Qing to an alleyway leading to the back garden. Evening self-study had ended, so students were either in the canteen or the dorms. As soon as they entered, a highly oppressive Alpha pheromone descended.
Lin Yan’s pupils contracted as he looked at Ji Qing, who had turned around to face him. Ji Qing’s gaze was cold and sharp. “Lin Yan, I’ve disliked you for a long time.” With every word, his pheromones grew stronger. The air was filled with a damp, dark scent, like a rising tide.
Lin Yan’s eyes crinkled with a smile, but his voice was ice-cold. “The feeling is mutual. I don’t find you particularly pleasant either.”
“Good.” Ji Qing narrowed his eyes and increased the pressure. He wanted to see how long an Omega could hold out under absolute suppression.
As Lin Yan’s face grew pale, Ji Qing sneered and took two steps forward. “Bully Lin, now that you’re an Omega, you seem quite vulnerable. This submissiveness doesn’t suit your style.”
Lin Yan’s expression darkened, and cold sweat broke out on his forehead. Even with Ning Youji’s temporary mark, he was struggling under the full weight of an Alpha’s suppression.
“Is that so?” Lin Yan fought to hide his weakness. “Perhaps I’ve just learned how to distinguish between benefit and cost.”
Despite his efforts, his body’s instincts were taking over. His eyes grew red, yet he forced a sneer. “Your reverse psychology doesn’t work on me.” The tooth marks on his neck were a double-edged sword; while they warded off other Alphas, they also absorbed other pheromones, giving him a splitting headache.
Ji Qing, seeing him still being stubborn, pushed his pheromones to the limit. “As long as you stop approaching Ning Youji, I can let this go.”
Every time he saw Ning Youji’s patience with Lin Yan, he felt a surge of hatred. Gu Yu had sacrificed so much for Ning Youji, yet couldn’t even get a look of concern in return. He blamed Lin Yan for everything.
“Oh, please don’t.” Lin Yan looked up, a rebellious smirk on his lips. “I actually can’t do without him.”
“You…!” Ji Qing gasped and grabbed Lin Yan by the shoulder, shoving him down. The scent of beer-like pheromones filled the alley, forcing Lin Yan to clench his fists. He grabbed Ji Qing’s wrist, attempting to throw him.
Ji Qing was shocked that he still had the strength to resist. Meeting Ji Qing’s surprised gaze, Lin Yan chuckled. “My plans were tailor-made for Ning Youji. There’s no such thing as a mistake.”
Internally, he cursed. Damn this Alpha-Omega difference. I’m reaching my limit!
Ji Qing saw his struggle and knew he couldn’t hold on much longer. He leaned in and whispered in Lin Yan’s ear, “So, you’re determined then?”
Lin Yan bore the weight and swung his arm to knock Ji Qing’s hand away. “You talk too much.” His red-rimmed eyes glared with fury. “I am definitely not leaving Ning Youji. What? You want to crush me with pheromones? Then stop talking.” He purposely provoked him further: “Hey, your pheromones are actually a bit weak, buddy.”
Inside, he was panicking, screaming for the system. But the system was always “out of the office” at critical moments. Useless piece of junk.
Ji Qing was completely enraged. Lin Yan braced himself and threw a punch at Ji Qing’s face. He missed and was kicked in the stomach instead. The metallic taste of blood rose in his throat. Lin Yan clicked his tongue. “When it comes to fighting, I’ve never been afraid of anyone.”
Ji Qing didn’t bother with words and focused his pheromones directly on Lin Yan’s gland. Lin Yan bit his lip in pain, his face turning ghostly white as his knees trembled. Ji Qing smiled dismissively as Lin Yan finally buckled. “What if I find someone to mark you? I bet you wouldn’t be able to get close to Ning Youji then.”
Lin Yan’s breathing was heavy and rapid. He wiped the blood from his lip, his voice raspy and cold. “We’ll see if you have the ability.”
Ji Qing wasn’t threatened; he was 200% certain Lin Yan had no strength left to resist. And Lin Yan really was at his limit, holding on by a thread. The natural Alpha-Omega suppression was absolute.
As more and more pressure bore down on him, Lin Yan’s last shred of sanity was beginning to slip away.
“Host! Host!” The system, sensing danger, rushed back.
Lin Yan let out a mental laugh. So, you finally decided to show up?
The system was indeed unreliable. It prepared to lend Lin Yan its strength, but then realized it might not be needed. The scent of beer and seawater in the alley was suddenly and completely swallowed by the scent of sandalwood.
