- Chapter 13 - Madman, That Man is Not Worth You Giving Your Life For!
The words, sounding almost like a final testament, caused Wen Muli to knit his brows. He was about to speak when a deafening rumble erupted in the sky, immediately followed by the earth shaking and the mountains quaking.
“What is happening?” Wen Muli asked coldly.
“Your Majesty, it’s terrible… a hole has ruptured in the defensive barrier!” The spirit official in charge of guarding the barrier’s formation eye rushed into the main hall, his terrified voice echoing across the land.
The peace of the human realm and the prosperity of its people relied entirely on the defensive grand formation set up by Wen Muli. This formation was exceptionally powerful and could not be breached from the outside. There was only one possibility for a breach to appear: it had been sabotaged from within!
Almost immediately, Wen Muli’s icy gaze swept toward Su Mo. Before Su Mo could react, he was pinned by the throat.
“Where exactly did you go seven days ago!” The interrogation was filled with fury.
“Do you think I did this?” Su Mo asked with a bitter, desolate smile.
“Your Majesty, please let go! Brother Su would absolutely never do this. He is wholeheartedly devoted to you; even if everyone in the world betrayed you, he would never betray you!” Yan Yichen, eyes filled with anxiety, stepped forward to pull at Wen Muli’s hand.
“What do you know? If it weren’t for him, you wouldn’t have had to undergo reincarnation…” Wen Muli was infuriated, gnashing his teeth.
However, he still released his grip, following Yan Yichen’s persuasion. He despised Su Mo, but he was not mindless. Matters were definitely not that simple. It was likely connected to the breaking of barriers in other territories a few days ago and the person who killed Zhou Yanyu. Su Mo was an orphan with no family or confidants other than him; it would be impossible for him to accomplish this alone. Who could it be?!
Wen Muli quickly calmed down. The immediate priority was to repair the breach in the barrier.
“Notify all cultivators to prepare for battle. All spirit officials, assemble! Follow me to the incident site to repair the grand formation!” he ordered, releasing his natal sword to take flight. The others also stood by, making full preparations for their respective duties.
Yan Yichen coldly stared at the direction in which the group departed, the corner of his mouth curling upward in a way almost impossible to see. When he turned his head, he met Su Mo’s calm gaze. He acted as if nothing had happened and reached out to take Su Mo’s hand. Su Mo, however, stepped back a beat earlier, refusing to be touched.
Yan Yichen pouted in embarrassment, his eyes filled with feigned worry as he asked, “Will His Majesty be alright?”
His acting skills were top-tier so miraculous that even Su Mo felt admiration. At the very least, Su Mo believed he himself possessed no such acting prowess. While he was also roleplaying, it was entirely a performance of his true nature!
“He will be fine. He has weathered so many storms that he won’t fall at a time like this. Don’t worry.” Su Mo answered with an assured smile.
Hardly had the words left his lips when another deafening boom occurred. Amidst the earth-shaking, one massive roar followed another. The transparent protective shield gradually revealed itself, displaying fine cracks resembling a spiderweb. A sharp, avian cry pierced the air, and the entire sky suddenly darkened.
“Demon beasts! It’s demon beasts, so many demon beasts!”
“Do not panic! Do not panic! We have the protective grand formation. With His Majesty here, the Phoenix Capital will never fall!”
The crowd began to descend into chaos, but they soon steadied themselves. They trusted their King entirely. Clearly, this was not the first time such an event had occurred, but every time, they had been steered out of danger under the protection of Wen Muli and the various cultivators.
Huge flying demon beasts appeared in the sky, attacking the protective grand formation as if they had no fear of death. The Phoenix Capital was vast, and the place where the breach first appeared was far from the city center. Now that the sky was occupied by beasts, the outskirts were likely faring no better. It wouldn’t be long before the protective grand formation shattered completely!
With Wen Muli away from the city, the only one who could shoulder the burden was the former Great General now Empress Su Mo!
“Pass the order: soldiers are to escort the commoners to the safety caverns; all cultivators are to prepare for battle!” After finishing his somber instructions, he conjured his natal weapon.
It was a massive black sword; the cold blade shimmered with a dense, dark-red malevolence. One could only wonder how many people’s blood it had consumed to possess such terrifying killing intent!
“Take Consort Xian and leave!” Su Mo turned his head to instruct the guards standing by.
“No… Brother Su, come with me! You have no spiritual root now; you will die!” Yan Yichen’s eyes were full of panic and unease, and he shook his head incessantly.
Su Mo offered a brilliant smile. “Be obedient and leave quickly. I promised A-Li that I would protect him and his people for a lifetime. I cannot leave!”
After speaking, he flew rapidly toward the sky. The cultivators who had already been waiting followed suit.
“Madman! That man is not worth you giving your life for!” Yan Yichen cursed under his breath, and, ignoring the guards’ advice, he flew after them. He could disregard everyone else’s life, but he could not abandon Su Mo. After all, it was he who had given him his second “life”!
Bang, bang, bang
One thudding impact after another hammered against everyone’s hearts.
Cr-r-rack—
After a crisp sound, the formation shattered completely. The dark swarm of demon beasts in the sky roared as they charged toward the crowd. From Su Mo’s order to the beasts breaching the protective formation, less than three minutes had passed; no matter how quick the soldiers’ movements were, they were unable to evacuate the commoners.
There were many cultivators in the city, but even more were the commoners without spiritual power! Everyone’s face was filled with horror as they gazed at the demon beasts whistling down toward them, closing their eyes in despair to await death.
However, the scene of blood flowing like a river, as imagined, did not appear. Countless cultivators flooded out; formation masters were distributed among the crowd, quickly setting up defensive arrays. Above, other cultivators had already engaged in a melee with the swarming beasts.
“Who is that!” Someone widened his eyes, pointing at the most dazzling man in the crowd and exclaiming, his eyes filled with disbelief!
“It’s the Great General Su Mo! He didn’t die; he came to save us!”
“Long live the Great General!”
“It’s the God of War! The God of War has come…”
Su Mo’s white clothes were soaked in blood, his face overflowing with a solemn, murderous aura as he swung the giant sword incessantly, hacking the attacking demon beasts to death. Within a short time, his spiritual power was completely drained, and a sharp pain surged from his Dantian.
He swallowed the blood rising in his throat and, with an expressionless face, took out bottle after bottle of pills, pouring them into his mouth as if they were worthless.
“Your Highness, we have this covered! Your body cannot withstand this; you must leave!” Song Zhi appeared at his side at some point, calling out rapidly while helping him fend off the beasts.
“How did you get here?! Is everything alright with A-Li!” Su Mo asked, his brow slightly furrowed.
“His Majesty is also under attack and cannot break free for the time being. He will return at the fastest possible speed! It was he who ordered me to return first; he commanded me to ensure the safety of you and Consort Xian!” Song Zhi answered rapidly.
Su Mo said nothing more, but he did not retreat either. Because he knew very well—Wen Muli… would not be coming back!
The true killing intent was not the demon beasts.
It was the one following the demon beasts the Shuiyun Sect!
