- Chapter 40 - Fatherly Love is Like a Landslide
Gu Qiuyi shook his head. Impossible. Chu Yueguang wouldn’t be like Kou Huai. He popped a piece of fruit into his mouth, sprawled out, and continued typing: “Yeah, Brother Hansa is good to me, so I’m good to him. It’s called give-and-take.”
Then, remembering something, he asked: “You were the one who called the police last time, right? Thank you, Brother. Actually, I wanted to call them too, but Brother Hansa wouldn’t let me; he said it was useless.”
Chu Yueguang: “Mm.” He paused, then added: “I won’t let people like that stay out to endanger society.”
He hadn’t done it because of Gu Qiuyi; whether the boy had lied to him or not, he would have done the same. He had witnessed it, so he handled it—it was as simple as that.
Reading this, Gu Qiuyi couldn’t help but feel a surge of reliable security. He said sincerely: “Brother, being friends with you must be a very happy thing.”
Thinking of this, he remembered how Kou Huai and Chu Yueguang fell out in the original novel because of “that matter,” and he fell silent for a moment.
He pulled Kou Huai out of his blacklist. “Brother Kou Huai, you absolutely must not get into a conflict with Brother Yueguang!”
Kou Huai: “! I knew Qiuqiu couldn’t bear to keep me blocked for long.”
Gu Qiuyi: “Did you see what I just said to you?”
Kou Huai: “Qiu, Brother adores you. I adore you to death.”
Gu Qiuyi: “?” He silently kicked Kou Huai back into the blacklist.
Gu Qiuyi checked the time. It was late, and drowsiness began to wash over him. He typed to Chu Yueguang: “Brother, I can’t go on. I’m so sleepy, I’m going to bed. You should sleep early too! Night-night.”
Chu Yueguang: “Goodnight.”
Gu Qiuyi thought to himself: He replied really fast this time.
Too lazy to get out of bed to wash up, he tossed his phone aside, flopped over, and fell fast asleep without even pulling up the covers.
The next morning, Gu Qiuyi crawled out of bed to wash up. Jiang Hansa came to knock on the door. Gu Qiuyi gave a muffled “Come in.”
Jiang Hansa pushed the door open. The bathroom door was half-ajar; Jiang Hansa didn’t enter but leaned against the frame to talk. “Did you block Kou Huai?”
Gu Qiuyi gave a vague hum. He looked at himself in the mirror—having not stayed up late, there were no dark circles under his eyes, unlike others who always had a faint darkness. He finished washing his face and walked out. “What’s for breakfast?”
Jiang Hansa complained: “You’ll know when you go down. You always have to ask.”
Gu Qiuyi, as if he hadn’t heard, asked again: “What’s for breakfast?”
Jiang Hansa gave in. “Wontons. Freshly wrapped, thin skins, plenty of filling. It’s the housekeeper’s specialty.”
Gu Qiuyi cheered: “I love wontons!”
Thinking of Kou Huai, Jiang Hansa asked: “What kind of madness was Kou Huai into yesterday? He sent me a giant block of text I couldn’t understand.”
Gu Qiuyi: “I don’t know. I blocked him.”
Jiang Hansa: “? Why did you block him too??”
Gu Qiuyi blinked his large, beautiful eyes, looking at him with extreme innocence. “Because I couldn’t communicate with him. I had to block him to let him calm down.”
Jiang Hansa said: “I think he was probably drinking last night. He was drunk.”
Gu Qiuyi: “I’ll see if he’s calmed down later.”
They went downstairs for breakfast and then sat in the garden pavilion to drink tea—it was incredibly pleasant. Suddenly, Gu Qiuyi’s phone rang. It was an unknown number; he hung up immediately.
Jiang Hansa asked: “Why didn’t you pick up?”
Gu Qiuyi took a sip of tea and said slowly: “I’m so rich now, I have to be wary of all unknown calls. After all, my brain isn’t very sharp. If I’m targeted by scammers, they’ll swindle me until I don’t even have my underwear left.”
Jiang Hansa: “…Your self-awareness is actually quite clear.”
Though Gu Qiuyi said that, Jiang Hansa always felt the boy wasn’t actually that dumb.
The phone rang again—the same unknown number. Gu Qiuyi tapped the screen and hung up again. Immediately after, Jiang Hansa’s phone rang. Unlike Gu Qiuyi, Jiang Hansa didn’t have many reservations and answered. “Hello?”
Jiang Hansa’s eyes widened as he looked at Gu Qiuyi. “Oh, oh, I see. I’ll bring him over right away.”
He hung up and said: “Gu Qiuyi, did you forget you were supposed to go to the library to study today?”
Gu Qiuyi: “…” He put down his teacup and whispered: “Was that call just now…?”
Jiang Hansa said crossly: “It was Xu Muqing! Weren’t you two supposed to meet at the library at eight? It’s almost nine now!”
Gu Qiuyi: “…” He said guiltily: “I was wondering why I felt like I forgot something. So it was that.”
Jiang Hansa got angry seeing his dazed look. “Stop daydreaming! Go pack your things!”
Gu Qiuyi: “Sob, Brother Hansa, you’re being mean to me again!” He squirmed on the table like a caterpillar. “I don’t want to pack. You go pack for me.”
“…” Jiang Hansa’s blood pressure rose. “Fine! I’ll pack for you. What do you want to drink?”
Gu Qiuyi: “Lemonade. Sweet and sour is best.”
“Truly lazy to the core. I must have killed someone in my past life to end up meeting a guy like you.” Muttering and cursing, Jiang Hansa went to get Gu Qiuyi’s backpack and even packed a bag of drinks and snacks for him.
“Get in the car. I’ll come later at noon to bring you lunch. Study hard for me! Xu Muqing is top-tier student material, and his time is precious, yet he’s making time to teach you. If you don’t work hard, you’re really wasting his effort.” Jiang Hansa saw him yawning and felt a sense of “hating iron for not becoming steel.”
Gu Qiuyi hummed in response, his slender fingers already reaching for the snack box in the bag.
Slap! Jiang Hansa hit the back of his fair hand. Gu Qiuyi let out a yelp of pain, and tears immediately welled up. He held up his hand to see a red mark from the hit. “Brother Hansa, you’re so mean! It hurts!”
Jiang Hansa: “…” His scalp felt numb. Did this guy’s performance last night actually evolve into some sort of divine skill?
Gu Qiuyi wiped his tears and choked out: “Brother Hansa, you’re so mean. you don’t care about me at all.”
Jiang Hansa’s expression twisted. “I care about you, but who cares about me?”
Gu Qiuyi sobbed: “It hurts so much, it hurts, Brother Hansa…”
Jiang Hansa: “…” Screw you, you’re actually addicted to acting now, aren’t you?!
Jiang Hansa: “Good boy, I was wrong. It was my fault. I’m sorry, don’t cry.”
Gu Qiuyi choked out: “I want to eat dried fruit.”
Jiang Hansa held back his breath, pulled out the snack, and handed it over. “Eat.”
Gu Qiuyi: “I’m too lazy to hold it. Feed me, Brother Hansa.”
Jiang Hansa: “…” Darn it!
Jiang Hansa endured the humiliation, opened the snack box, and fed a piece of dried banana to Gu Qiuyi’s mouth.
“Brother Hansa, are your hands clean? If they aren’t, I don’t dare eat,” Gu Qiuyi said.
“…” Jiang Hansa forced a smile. “Spotless.”
Gu Qiuyi immediately turned from tears to smiles. He bit into the dried banana, crunched it down, and opened his mouth again. “More.”
As Jiang Hansa fed him, he wondered: How did I end up in this position? He had originally only wanted to use Gu Qiuyi. How did it turn into this? Truly, one should not have wicked thoughts, or else the “retribution” (blessing) will come.
With a weary face, Jiang Hansa dropped him off at the library. As soon as the boy got out, he urgently told the driver to floor it, not giving Gu Qiuyi a single chance to speak again.
Once the car was several meters away, Jiang Hansa’s phone buzzed. It was a message from that brat: “Brother Hansa, why did you leave? I wanted you to walk me in. This backpack is so heavy, the straps turned my palms red, sob sob sob.”
Jiang Hansa gave a twisted smile. He now had rich experience dealing with this guy; as soon as the brat’s butt twitched, he knew exactly what flavor of fart was coming. He didn’t reply, coldly put his phone away, and told the driver to speed up. In seconds, the library was out of sight.
Gu Qiuyi put the backpack on his back—the bag, filled with middle and high school textbooks, was exceptionally heavy. Having been pampered lately, he felt delicate; the weight was enough to bow his spine.
He walked into the library and soon spotted Xu Muqing. He quickened his pace, walked over, and called out: “Brother Muqing!”
Xu Muqing glanced at him. “Is the backpack heavy?”
Gu Qiuyi swung the bag onto the table with a thud. “Heavy! It’s killing me.”
Xu Muqing: “Why are you late?”
Gu Qiuyi: “…” He sat down gently and whispered: “I forgot.”
Xu Muqing didn’t say anything more. Seeing his serious expression, Gu Qiuyi couldn’t help but apologize: “Brother Muqing, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to forget. Some things happened yesterday…”
Before he could finish, a person walked straight up to them, stopped in front of Xu Muqing, and tapped on the table. “Xu Muqing, right? Come outside for a moment.”
Gu Qiuyi saw the guy was big and tall with a hostile expression. His attention shifted immediately. “Who are you?”
The boy gave him a contemptuous look. ” I’m not talking to you.”
Gu Qiuyi wanted to say more but was held back by Xu Muqing. Gu Qiuyi turned to him and asked: “…Brother Muqing, do you know this guy?”
Xu Muqing nodded slightly. “I know him. You’re Xu Shuqi’s boyfriend, right?”
The boy was surprised, but he quickly curled his lip into a cold smile. “You know me? Even better. Come out; I have things to discuss with you.”
Xu Muqing stood up. “Fine. Let’s go.” He looked at Gu Qiuyi and said: “Wait for me here, understand?”
Xu Muqing’s expression was quite serious when he said that. Gu Qiuyi nodded. “Okay, I’ll wait.”
Xu Muqing led the way out of the library, followed by the boy.
Watching their retreating backs, Gu Qiuyi grew worried. The boy looked very tall and strong—half a head taller than Xu Muqing. If they fought, Xu Muqing would likely be at a disadvantage.
Gu Qiuyi pulled out his phone, instinctively wanting to call for backup. But when he went to find Kou Huai, he paused—no, I can’t let Kou Huai and Xu Muqing meet. What about Chu Yueguang?
He quickly opened the chat with Chu Yueguang, but stopped as he was about to hit send. Chu Yueguang lived in the West District; it was too far. It would take over two hours to get here, which would be too late.
I’ll find Jiang Hansa.
He sent a message to Jiang Hansa explaining the situation and then followed them. Two against one should give them some advantage, right?
He walked outside the library but didn’t see Xu Muqing or the boy. He walked toward a secluded area and soon spotted them.
As he had expected, they were indeed fighting. Except… the one being beaten was the other boy.
The boy’s arm was hanging limply at his side, clearly dislocated. He was lying on the ground, howling in pain.
Xu Muqing, however, looked completely calm. The sole of his shoe was pressed against the boy’s head, grinding it gently. His voice was still characteristically gentle: “Is this all the ability you have?”
Gu Qiuyi: “…” Gu Qiuyi chose to take a few steps back, closed his eyes, took a deep breath, walked forward again, and opened them.
Great. It’s not a hallucination.
Gu Qiuyi: “…” This can’t be Xu Muqing!!!!
