- Chapter 15 - Perhaps a "Bear" Saving the Beauty
Gu Qiuyi looked at Xu Muqing’s grades. He had scored nearly perfect in every subject, ranking first in the entire school—a true academic god.
Jiang Hansa was about ten points behind Xu Muqing, ranking ninth.
Gu Qiuyi was suddenly very moved. The teacher had placed two of the top ten students in the school right next to him; it was truly a well-intentioned move! If he didn’t study hard, he’d be wasting the teacher’s painstaking efforts.
Since he couldn’t be a rich second-generation for the time being, he would study hard and strive to be a rich first-generation!
With this thought, he leaned over to talk to Xu Muqing—now that they were desk-mates, it was much more convenient to whisper during class. “Muqing, I want to ask, how do you maintain such excellent grades?”
Xu Muqing had also seen Gu Qiuyi’s results. Like Jiang Hansa, he was profoundly shocked. If he remembered correctly, Gu Qiuyi’s grades used to be middle-to-upper tier; there was no reason for them to plummet to such a low score.
Hearing the question, Xu Muqing snapped out of it. Just as he was about to answer, Jiang Hansa suddenly interjected from behind with a snide remark: “He hasn’t had his brain gnawed on by a dog, that’s how.”
Gu Qiuyi turned his head toward him. “Brother Hansa, let’s start the tutoring today, okay? My middle school foundation isn’t great, so let’s start from there.”
Jiang Hansa went silent again.
Gu Qiuyi’s voice could almost be described as sweet. “It’s settled then, Brother Hansa. I’m not greedy; just tutor me until I can get into a ‘Project 211’ university.”
Jiang Hansa: “…” With your garbage score of 100-something, you want to get into a 211? Jiang Hansa’s smile twisted. “A 211? You’d be better off dreaming; that would be faster.”
Gu Qiuyi glared at him. “Brother Hansa, stop smiling. It looks so ugly.”
Jiang Hansa: “…”
Gu Qiuyi turned back to Xu Muqing. “Brother Muqing, you should help me too. How about I pay you a salary?”
Xu Muqing’s eyes flickered; he seemed somewhat moved.
Jiang Hansa asked, “Do I get a salary?”
Gu Qiuyi replied: “Brother Hansa, talking about money hurts our feelings, doesn’t it?”
Jiang Hansa: “…”
Xu Muqing shook his head and said, “No need for a salary. I’ll help you.” He added, “If you say your foundation is poor, you’ll need to buy some supplementary teaching books to start over. I know a bookstore; it’s a bit far, but the reference books, workbooks, and exam papers there are quite comprehensive. Let’s go together this weekend, and I’ll help you pick some out.”
Gu Qiuyi nodded repeatedly. “Okay, okay! Whatever you say.” He then turned to Jiang Hansa. “Brother Hansa, you come along too. I don’t want to take a taxi; it’s a waste of money.”
Jiang Hansa was speechless at how righteously he freeloaded a ride. “…Gas is also very expensive, you know.”
Gu Qiuyi looked at him with an aggrieved expression. “Brother Hansa, you’ve changed. Why are you always contradicting me? If you keep this up, I won’t like you anymore.”
Jiang Hansa: “…” Jiang Hansa forced out a smile. “My fault. I’ll drive you there.”
Gu Qiuyi: “We have to pick up Brother Muqing too. By the way, Muqing, where do you live?”
Xu Muqing gave an address. Jiang Hansa was surprised; his gaze fell on Xu Muqing. That address was for a newly developed housing complex. Three or four years ago, the prices there were hyped to astronomical levels. However, due to a murder case occurring there, the prices crashed to the bottom. Even so, it wasn’t a place a common person should be able to live.
Xu Muqing didn’t look like a rich kid; his school uniform was washed until it was almost white, and he only had a few pairs of shoes. Jiang Hansa could see right through his financial background.
If it weren’t for the fact that Gu Qiuyi’s appearance was softer, more refined, and carried a charm that made people want to pity him, the impoverished Xu Muqing would actually have been within his target range for “befriending.” After all, kids from poor families were easier to manipulate; once they touched that elite circle, they found it even harder to pull themselves out.
Jiang Hansa was suddenly interested. Having been tortured by Gu Qiuyi for so long, he actually developed a different little scheme. His tone toward Xu Muqing grew gentler. “I’ll come pick you up then.”
Gu Qiuyi noticed that Jiang Hansa’s eyes were glowing weirdly while looking at Xu Muqing, looking like he was plotting something bad. He couldn’t help but reach out and punch Jiang Hansa. “Brother Hansa, why are you staring at Brother Muqing so intensely?”
Jiang Hansa glanced at Gu Qiuyi, and his glowing eyes immediately turned dull. How unlucky. “Nothing.”
Gu Qiuyi looked at him suspiciously. “Really nothing? I feel like that look you had just now made it seem like you wanted to sell Brother Muqing off.”
Jiang Hansa gave him a startled look and laughed dryly. “Qiuyi, your jokes aren’t funny at all.”
Gu Qiuyi looked at him and said slowly, “Is that so?”
For some reason, Jiang Hansa felt a strange sensation in his heart—as if Gu Qiuyi knew everything.
Xu Muqing, ignoring the world outside his window, continued correcting his wrong answers, not participating in their conversation.
The weekend arrived quickly. It was the last week of September, and the weather was still very hot. Gu Qiuyi rarely went out and cherished his beautiful face, so he wore a baseball cap. His soft hair was hidden under the cap, revealing a clean, white forehead, making him look youthful and lively.
Just as he walked out of the school gates, a notification popped up on his phone: someone had deposited 3,000 yuan into his bank card.
Gu Qiuyi stood frozen on the spot, his mouth hanging open. This, this, this… the monthly 3,000 yuan allowance?
Wow!!!! He had been kicked out of the house, yet the Gu family was actually still giving him pocket money???
Gu Qiuyi felt like he had found money on the street. He was ecstatic but afraid it was a mistake, so he transferred the money to his WeChat wallet to confirm. It really was 3,000 yuan.
A trace of guilt appeared in his heart. He shouldn’t have lied to the teacher about his parents being dead. It seemed Gu Qingbai wasn’t that cold and ruthless after all.
Gu Qiuyi was in a great mood. When he sat in Jiang Hansa’s car, the smile on his face wouldn’t go away.
Jiang Hansa asked curiously, “Why are you so happy today?”
Gu Qiuyi giggled. “My family actually still gave me an allowance. Three thousand yuan!”
Jiang Hansa couldn’t understand. “…That’s it?”
Gu Qiuyi: “Yeah! Isn’t this money basically free?”
Jiang Hansa understood. This person was the reincarnation of an iron rooster (miser); getting a few thousand for free was indeed something that could make him happy. He didn’t ask more and told the driver to go to Xu Muqing’s address.
Because of traffic, they were about fifteen minutes late. Since Xu Muqing didn’t have a phone, he couldn’t be contacted, yet he had actually stood there under the scorching sun for fifteen minutes waiting for them. By the time he got into the car, his face was flushed red from the sun.
Gu Qiuyi handed him a bottle of water and ordered Jiang Hansa to turn the AC lower, showing great concern for Xu Muqing. Xu Muqing was a bit uncomfortable with the enthusiasm, but he said nothing.
After over an hour, they reached the bookstore Xu Muqing mentioned. It was indeed far from their school, almost across the entire South District.
Xu Muqing led them inside. Although Gu Qiuyi was a miser, he was willing to spend money on books. He bought the entire large stack of books Xu Muqing picked out for him.
Once they finished, Jiang Hansa suggested: “Since we’re out, let’s go eat together.”
Xu Muqing hesitated, but Gu Qiuyi had already agreed. “Sure! What are we eating?”
Just as Jiang Hansa was about to speak, a voice suddenly came from behind them. “Oh, look at this. Isn’t this our ‘little bitch dog’?”
Jiang Hansa’s face turned pale in an instant. Gu Qiuyi turned back to see a boy dressed in trendy clothes but who wasn’t very tall. He was holding a pretty girl and approaching them with ill intent.
The boy walked up to Jiang Hansa and ground his foot onto Jiang Hansa’s snowy-white sneakers. The movement was slow and light, filled with heavy insult. “What, haven’t seen you for a year and the dog doesn’t know how to bark for its master anymore?”
Jiang Hansa’s expression twisted slightly but quickly returned to normal. He forced a smile and didn’t dare pull his foot away, letting the boy grind his white shoes into a filthy mess. His voice was somewhat respectful as he said, “Young Master Zou, long time no see.”
Zou Shu let out a cold laugh. “So you still recognize me? I thought you’d forgotten me.” He turned to the pretty girl and said, “This is the ‘bitch dog’ I told you about. He spent two years wagging his tail behind us, then thought he was hot stuff and dared to bark at us.”
The girl looked at the tall, handsome Jiang Hansa in surprise and giggled behind her hand. “How pathetic.”
Zou Shu spat on Jiang Hansa and laughed. “A bitch dog is a bitch dog. A bitch dog for life. Did you really think you were someone important?”
Jiang Hansa’s hands, hanging at his sides, began to tremble. The smile on his face could no longer be maintained.
Gu Qiuyi couldn’t help but kick Zou Shu’s foot away. “What are you doing stepping on people for no reason?”
Jiang Hansa was terrified. He quickly pulled Gu Qiuyi back and hissed, “What are you doing?!”
Gu Qiuyi said angrily, “He’s bullying you!”
Jiang Hansa shouted, “What do you know!?” He turned back to Zou Shu. “Young Master Zou, this is my friend, he…” doesn’t know any better.
Before he could finish, Zou Shu slapped him across the face. “So someone is standing up for you? Does he know you’ve even licked toilets before? You’re as lowly as a dog, yet someone actually treats you as a friend?”
Jiang Hansa’s head was whipped to the side by the blow. His whole body was shaking, and his face and neck turned a dark red.
Zou Shu pushed him aside with a cold laugh and stood in front of Gu Qiuyi. “You’ve got some guts too, dare to kick me? Do you know who I am?”
Gu Qiuyi started to feel the fear. He retreated a few steps, his legs shaking. Just as Zou Shu raised his hand to slap him, Gu Qiuyi’s eyes suddenly lit up. He reached out and kicked Zou Shu hard, then sprinted off in a certain direction. While running, he screamed:
“BROTHER KOU HUAI!!!!”
Kou Huai, who was holding two cups of milk tea while waiting for his new girlfriend, felt his soul shudder. He turned around and saw Gu Qiuyi sprinting toward him. He was so startled that both cups of milk tea slammed onto the ground.
Gu Qiuyi skidded to a halt in front of him and yelled again: “BROTHER KOU HUAI!”
Kou Huai: “…” He saw Gu Qiuyi’s face clearly, and his stomach instinctively began to ache.
