Chapter 10: A Maidenly Alpha
The most crucial element in mecha combat is feel. Every child in the Eternal Empire knows that a mecha pilot can lose three matches in a row, but they absolutely cannot go three consecutive days without touching a mecha.
With the Mecha Combat Tournament fast approaching, it was even more essential to train daily and maintain that feel.
Bai Qing accepted Xiang Zhuo’s invitation.
On the other end, Xiang Zhuo was so excited he nearly shouted out loud when he saw the message.
He managed to restrain himself for a long time, preventing an outburst in the classroom. But his ecstatic expression was too obvious, and his movements were too exaggerated, causing the student next to him to glance over repeatedly.
Xiang Zhuo carefully read Bai Yu’s reply once more, then let out a long sigh of contentment.
His deskmate couldn’t help but ask in a low voice: “Did something good happen?”
Xiang Zhuo chuckled softly: “He agreed to meet me tonight.”
The deskmate had clearly heard about His Royal Highness’s beautiful love story, and upon seeing Xiang Zhuo’s smile, the deskmate’s face showed a look of longing: “That’s wonderful! I wish you both a harmonious life together and an early birth of children.”
Xiang Zhuo didn’t expect the other person to be so direct. A blush quietly crept up to his ear tips. He answered very honestly: “We are only friends right now. You can’t even say I’m unilaterally pursuing him.”
The deskmate noticed Xiang Zhuo’s bright red ear tips, and a sparkle shot through his eyes. He replied meaningfully: “Impossible! I believe in you, Your Royal Highness. Where there’s a will, there’s a way!”
The conversation between the two did not continue, but the deskmate quietly opened his communication terminal and @-mentioned all members in a hundred-person group named “Who Says AB Has No Future”:
[Empire Rose Shyly] [Group Nickname]: [Family, His Royal Highness sat next to me today, and I saw him make a creepy-but-happy smile at his communication terminal. No need to guess, his wife definitely messaged him.]
[Smiling at the Yellow Springs] [Group Nickname]: [Grandma, the CP you shipped is finally making progress!]
[Empire Rose Shyly] [Group Nickname]: [When I mentioned his wife, His Royal Highness’s ears actually turned RED! RED! I definitely didn’t see wrong, oh my god!]
[My CP Kiss Now] [Group Nickname]: [What the 🤯! His Royal Highness is a Maidenly Alpha! I always thought he and his little Beta were going the route of forcible possession… is he really this innocent?]
[Smiling at the Yellow Springs] [Group Nickname]: [So shippable, so shippable! Are any writers willing to produce content? Innocent Maidenly Alpha x Cool Psycho Beta]
[My CP Kiss Now] [Group Nickname]: [Shippable! Begging the group’s titans for content! Hands a pen.]
[Underpants Fly with Socks] [Group Nickname]: [Shippable! Begging the group’s titans for content! Hands a pen.]
[Omnivore] [Group Nickname]: [Shippable! Begging the group’s titans for content! Hands a pen.]
[My CP Never Be] [Group Nickname]: [Shippable! Begging the group’s titans for content! Hands a pen.]
…
…
At the entrance to the Underground Arena, Xiang Zhuo waited with bated breath.
He had specifically chosen a black jacket with a purple inner shirt, a titanium skull necklace hanging on his chest, and a pair of black leather boots. Jing Yu confirmed he looked impossibly handsome.
Just a rushed morning, so his hair isn’t quite right.
Even though the time was early, Bai Yu was nowhere in sight, and he felt a little anxious. Would Bai Yu like him in this outfit?
Xiang Zhuo checked the time frequently, taking deep, nervous breaths.
Suddenly, a figure flashed into his peripheral vision, running towards him. Xiang Zhuo quickly looked down and immediately saw Bai Yu, who hadn’t even had time to change out of his battle uniform, having rushed over immediately after finishing a match.
Bai Yu’s voice still had a hint of awkwardness: “Sorry, I started a match early. The opponent was strong. Did I keep you waiting?”
Xiang Zhuo interpreted this awkwardness as the shy and overwhelmed reaction of a stubborn slum boy accepting goodwill. His heart melted into a puddle, yet he was overjoyed: “It’s fine. I just arrived too.”
Since the two of them were only sparring and not officially dueling, they needed to pay the Underground Arena to rent mecha and the venue.
However, when renting the mecha and venue, Xiang Zhuo said: “Please open two changing rooms for us, thank you.”
Bai Yu couldn’t help but glance at him.
The front desk also looked up at Xiang Zhuo strangely: “I apologize, sir, but our space is limited. Male Alphas and Male Betas can share a changing room. This does not violate Imperial law. Please cooperate.”
After handing the changing room magnetic card and the mecha activation key to Xiang Zhuo, the front desk clerk buried their head in the optical computer, showing they had no intention of fulfilling Xiang Zhuo’s strange and redundant request.
Bai Yu’s expression was calm: “2-A01 Combat Training Room. Let’s go. To the changing room first.”
Xiang Zhuo sighed and had to give up.
He followed behind Bai Yu, looking with complex eyes at Bai Yu’s body tightly wrapped in the battle uniform.
For a Beta, this body was indeed a bit too skinny.
Just how much hardship did this Beta endure in places he didn’t know about?
For a moment, Xiang Zhuo’s eyes were filled with a thick, unresolvable heartache.
He secretly resolved in his heart: When he and Bai Yu get married, he must take care of Bai Yu and make him plump and healthy!
He wished they could get married today!
Bai Yu, however, looked completely at ease. He didn’t notice anything, lightly tapping the magnetic card against the door lock. The changing room door sprang open. He grabbed his battle uniform and stepped into the small cubicle on the right first.
Xiang Zhuo tried to calm his emotions and headed for the cubicle on the left.
But why!
Just as he passed Bai Yu’s cubicle, a blinding flash of white suddenly entered the corner of his eye. What he saw next was smooth, fair skin, beautifully shaped butterfly bones, and a narrow yet extremely flexible waistline…
I can’t look anymore! I didn’t do it on purpose!
Xiang Zhuo jerked his head away as if facing a formidable enemy, yanking the curtain all the way shut. His hand gripped the clasp tightly, refusing himself any opportunity to peek again.
Bai Yu asked in confusion: “What’s wrong?”
Xiang Zhuo didn’t dare turn his head back: “Nothing. Your curtain wasn’t pulled properly. There was a gap. I helped you pull it.”
Bai Yu: “…Oh, thank you then.”
Xiang Zhuo entered his cubicle and instantly felt his strength drain away.
He was truly going crazy.
Bai Yu was right next to him. Only a fabric curtain separated them, yet both were preoccupied with their own thoughts.
No matter what, he couldn’t connect the person in front of him with the Xiang Zhuo from the Academy during the day.
Ye Sheng constantly muttered those pseudo-NP fanfics in his ear—that Xiang Zhuo often had multiple personalities. Could Xiang Zhuo really have schizophrenia?
…
The combat began.
Bai Qing had suddenly gained inspiration for a mecha combat combo during his last arena match. When sparring with Xiang Zhuo, these fragmented ideas seemed to suddenly gain life, automatically arranging themselves and forming a system. Xiang Zhuo also noticed this, seemingly intentionally feeding him moves to help him continuously optimize the combo.
Both of them knew that once this combo was perfected, it would be an unbeatable strategy on the battlefield.
The two fought with increasing fervor, utilizing nearly eighty percent of the power of the mecha, these cold humanoid weapons.
It was no exaggeration: the benefit gained from encountering a good opponent on the battlefield was far greater than the benefit gained from encountering a good teacher in the classroom.
After the battle, Xiang Zhuo only felt exhilarated. Every pore on his body was relaxed, and the fatigue of multiple days vanished.
When Bai Yu jumped down from the cockpit, Xiang Zhuo instinctively offered support, his palm resting on his waist.
Bai Yu subconsciously pressed the half-face mask he wore, giving Xiang Zhuo a sidelong glance.
Xiang Zhuo restrained himself and withdrew his hand: “You are truly amazing. I learned a lot from you today.”
Bai Yu nodded: “Me too.”
Xiang Zhuo: “Can we fight like this every day in the future?”
Bai Yu: “Are you not afraid that I will become familiar with your fighting style and defeat you in the Mecha Combat Tournament?”
Xiang Zhuo smiled: “If I lose to you, I will be completely convinced.”
Bai Yu looked up.
“Then thank you.”
Initially, Xiang Zhuo never understood the meaning behind that look from Bai Yu. It wasn’t until much later that Xiang Zhuo woke up in the middle of the night, sat up in bed, and, as if divinely inspired, finally understood…
But now, Xiang Zhuo only interpreted that look as the turbulent joy and gratitude hidden beneath a calm surface. He looked at Bai Yu’s thin back. He thought of Bai Yu struggling to make a living during the day and working hard to compete in the Underground Arena at night. He was at an age that should have been carefree, yet he lived such a difficult life.
After a while, he spoke again: “If you win first place, I will be even more willing.”
A person as good as Bai Yu deserves to be naturally enveloped in all glory.
