Chapter 6: The Fox is a Connected Person?!
“Good morning, Boss”
Nining Qiyan flashed a standard smile showing eight teeth. The man nodded without looking to the side, his pace never wavering.
The boss didn’t look like he was wearing any more layers than they were. Nining Qiyan gave a subtle, sweeping glance: a standard suit jacket, shirt, and tie, plus a few small accessories whose names Nining Qiyan had already forgotten.
Did the boss also use a heat patch?
Nining Qiyan shifted his gaze, searching earnestly, but saw no suspicious rectangular outline under the suit jacket.
He was stunned: As expected of the boss! Not afraid of the cold at all.
Little did he know, the suit jacket actually had an automatic heating function—a piece of high-tech gear.
However, Nining Qiyan mused to himself, the boss really was a pure-blooded human; he didn’t carry even a hint of “monster scent.”
Actually, there was a tiny trace, but only a monster with a keen sense of smell like him could detect it. The scent was just too faint to identify.
Huang Muquan said the boss preferred to keep a low profile and didn’t want a grand, noisy welcome. So, the hotel operated as usual, and only Huang Muquan stayed at the entrance to greet the boss, then followed a step behind him into the elevator.
Once they were gone, Luo Haitang let out a breath, and his previously rigid, straight back curved into a slight slouch.
He gave a thumbs-up and said, “As expected of the boss of a listed company; that aura is truly powerful.”
Nining Qiyan recalled the moment and said, “Mm, powerful.”
A fox is not a large, ferocious beast, but just now, when that middle-aged man walked past—even though the other party hadn’t paid him any specific attention—there was an oppressive feeling like meeting a large predator. It was a different sensation from the goofy brown bear on the first floor.
Moreover, although he had only seen a profile view, the slightly familiar facial features reminded him of someone else.
A human he had only briefly met a few times.
It was probably because their temperaments were so similar.
Nining Qiyan patted his cheeks, pulling his wandering thoughts back.
Guests were coming; it was time to work.
Without going to the first floor to disturb the diners, Qin Yuan went to the third floor. Huang Muquan pushed open the door to the largest room, where three or four people were already standing. Seeing Qin Yuan arrive, they chorused, “Hello, President Qin.”
Unlike the other employees, they called Qin Yuan “President Qin.” It was rumored that the people at Tianqin Group addressed their boss this way, which sounded a bit more sophisticated than “Boss.” They did the same to please him.
This had been the idea of a horse monster among them, who was always adept at bootlicking.
However, this time, the horse monster’s flattery hit a snag. Qin Yuan shot him a sharp look like a blade and said, “Having one ‘President Xia’ in the hotel is enough. I am not one.”
The horse monster slapped his own thigh hard—this time, he really did hit a “horse leg”—and apologized with a sycophantic smile: “Look at my nose; I must have sniffed the wrong scent, and my brain had a momentary lapse. Don’t take it to heart, Boss; just treat it like I let off a fart.”
Qin Yuan couldn’t be bothered to argue. He sat in the center office chair and flipped through report after report to analyze them. He didn’t need the monsters to interject with explanations; he only looked at results, not processes.
After a long while—just about ten minutes later—the reports were finished. Qin Yuan rubbed his temples, closed his eyes, and said, “Make them digital next time. Don’t tell me you still haven’t learned how.”
The crowd of monsters: “…Understood, Boss.”
The thing killing the monsters wasn’t that they couldn’t use computers; it was that one of them had forgotten to save at the very last moment.
The monsters’ aggrieved gazes converged on Huang Muquan.
Huang Muquan: …Sorry about that.
Qin Yuan ignored the aggrieved monsters below and tapped his fingers on the table twice. Suddenly, he asked, “Have any monsters been hired recently?”
Huang Muquan coughed softly and reported, “We only hired one fox this month.”
With the rapid development of the era, most monsters couldn’t stand the fast pace of the human world. Furthermore, with the increasingly high requirements humans had for everything, it was becoming less friendly to monsters who were penniless and uneducated “orphans” upon entering society. Most monsters chose to stay in the Monster Realm after taking human form and wouldn’t step into the human world for even a single step.
Twenty-odd years ago, there were the most monsters in the human world, but now… throughout the whole year, very few chose to enter society.
A fox?
Hearing this, Qin Yuan’s eyelashes fluttered. He slowly raised his eyes and said, “That is rare.”
Fifteen years ago, a female fox had died in a car accident, and her husband had passed away half a year later. Since then, it had been rare to see fox monsters in the human world.
Coincidentally, he had even known that pair of fox husband and wife; he had attended their wedding.
Qin Yuan began missing someone again. He slowly exhaled, gave a few instructions to the not-so-bright monsters, and left the meeting room followed by Huang Muquan.
While in the elevator, seeing the floor display change to “2,” Qin Yuan suddenly said, “Tell those black swans that if it’s cold, they don’t have to force themselves to go into the lake. Their salaries will still be paid.”
Hearing this, Huang Muquan felt a wave of envy in his heart. He desperately wanted to tug at the boss’s pant leg and tell him he knew how to swim too, but he didn’t dare. He could only say, “Understood, Boss. I will see that it is done.”
The boss had always been gentle and tolerant toward the black swans. He knew the reason why, and it was also the reason he had secured his current position.
Qin Yuan didn’t stay too long. In truth, the profits brought by the Yongfeng Hotel were negligible—they couldn’t compare to the benefits brought by Tianqin—but he still came to take a look every month.
Stepping onto the red carpet he couldn’t even be bothered to criticize, two greetings reached his ears.
One was clear and pleasant; the other was warm and gentle.
Suddenly, he paused his footsteps and tilted his head to look.
It was a young man.
His face still looked young, his eyes bright and clear, reminiscent of an old friend.
He looks a bit familiar… he looks like an old friend.
Huang Muquan saw him stop and whispered, “This is the newly hired fox. What’s the matter, Boss?”
The fox couldn’t have provoked the boss, could he? I actually quite like him; I hope he doesn’t get fired by the boss.
Huang Muquan muttered inwardly.
Qin Yuan said, “Nothing. I just suddenly remembered my son.”
Qin Yuan looked Nining Qiyan up and down and asked, “What is your name?”
Nining Qiyan was perplexed but maintained his standard smile. “My name is Nining Qiyan.”
Upon hearing this name, Qin Yuan seemed to remember something. His tone was filled with nostalgia: “Oh, so it’s you. You’ve grown so big already. I even held you when you were a child.”
Nining Qiyan: Huh?
Huang Muquan and Luo Haitang, who were eavesdropping: Holy crap! He’s a connected person!
The two monsters’ eyes glowed instantly, and their accusing gazes stuck firmly to Nining Qiyan, as if they wanted to stare a hole through his face.
You really aren’t a “monster” enough; treating us like outsiders.
Nining Qiyan braced himself against their two highly palpable stares and said, “Boss… how could you have held me?”
Qin Yuan said with great certainty, “I remember your name. I even attended the full-month banquet for you and your older siblings with my wife. At the time, I held you, and you peed in my arms. I remember it very clearly.”
Nining Qiyan closed his eyes in agony, unwilling to face reality.
You didn’t need to say that! It’s so embarrassing for a fox!
Huang Muquan and Luo Haitang, who were listening in, struggled to hold back their laughter: Peeing in the arms of the cold-hearted, ruthless boss… that picture is too beautiful; just thinking about it is hilarious, hahahahaha.
Nining Qiyan: Can you guys wipe the smiles off your faces? Please don’t build your happiness on my suffering.
Qin Yuan inspected him and said, “You look exactly like your mother.”
It was true; Nining Qiyan was practically cut from the same cloth as his mother.
Nining Qiyan gave Qin Yuan a somewhat unnatural smile and replied, “Yes, I do.”
Qin Yuan hummed, returning to the main topic. He voiced a thought: “Would you be willing to do me a favor? I can pay you.”
Nining Qiyan’s expression froze. “What favor?”
Qin Yuan took out his phone. “Add me on WeChat; we can discuss it in detail there.”
Don’t let his usual stern face fool you; as long as you didn’t provoke him, he was quite approachable.
Now that he had met the child of an old friend—even if the person had used his arms as a toilet—his mood had become quite pleasant.
It was like a light rain turning into a cloudy day.
Nining Qiyan took out his phone and opened the green app with a generous flourish. “I’ll scan you.”
“Beep—”
Nining Qiyan successfully added the boss on WeChat. He changed the remark to “Boss” and flashed his standard smile: “All done, Boss.”
“Call me ‘Uncle Qin’.” Qin Yuan seemed lost in recollection, murmuring softly: “If so many accidents hadn’t happened, you and Xixi might have been childhood sweethearts.”
Who is “Xixi”?
Nining Qiyan didn’t understand, but he obediently called out, “Hello, Uncle Qin.”
Qin Yuan came back to his senses and acknowledged him. He seemed to have other business; after adding him on WeChat, he said, “We’ll chat later.” His long legs strode onto the Maybach, and he drove away.
Nining Qiyan retracted his gaze and was startled by two faces leaning right up to his. He gasped for air, his heart still racing: “You scared me to death! What are you doing?”
Luo Haitang on the right: “You hid that well, knowing the boss. Is it too late for me to get on good terms with you?”
Nining Qiyan said with a numb expression: “Too late. You missed it.”
Huang Muquan on the left: “You even peed in the boss’s arms. You have such guts, doing what I’ve always wanted to do but never dared.”
Nining Qiyan twitched his eyelids: “I’ll lend this ‘guts’ to you; you go do it.”
Huang Muquan shook his head wildly: “Thanks for the invitation, but I’ll pass.”
After the banter, Huang Muquan had to go organize the digital reports and ran back to his doghouse on the third floor. Nining Qiyan ignored Luo Haitang’s winking and grimacing at his phone; while there were no guests, he took the chance to relax his facial muscles that had nearly stiffened from smiling.
Thus, Luo Haitang watched in a stupor as Nining Qiyan quickly puckered his lips, then smacked himself in the face.
And one smack wasn’t enough, so he did it twice!
Maybe a fox’s skin is a bit thicker…
He didn’t understand, but he respected it.
Luo Haitang thought in a daze, at least I wouldn’t smack myself twice.
After returning home, Nining Qiyan looked at the boss’s “black swan” profile picture and cautiously sent a message.
[Fox Doesn’t Eat Pears: Uncle Qin, what favor did you need me to help you with?]
About half a quarter of an hour later, while Nining Qiyan was scrolling through short videos, a message popped up at the top of his screen.
[Boss: You’ve probably guessed it; my wife is a black swan.]
Nining Qiyan, who was scrolling through videos, thought: When did I know that?
Immediately afterward, Nining Qiyan’s clever little brain shifted, and he realized the truth.
Oh, right. Humans and monsters can be together. That explains why Uncle Qin, a human, knew about the existence of monsters.
Nining Qiyan replied with a straight face.
[Fox Doesn’t Eat Pears: Yes, I know.]
[Boss: So our child is the crystallization of love between a human and a monster.]
[Fox Doesn’t Eat Pears: Mm, I know.]
Crystallization of love, what a mouthful. Why did humans like to call their offspring the “crystallization of love”? Did it sound better that way?
Without giving Nining Qiyan any time to complain, Qin Yuan’s next message popped up.
[Boss: But he doesn’t know his mother is a monster.]
Meaning Uncle Qin’s son didn’t know he possessed half monster blood.
Normal… it would be weird if it were.
