The Silly Fox Goes Down The Mountain And Gets A Happily Ever After With The Chief Eunuch - Chapter 2
Chapter 2: Meeting
“You got it!”
The boss sprinkled the seasonings as requested, expertly portioned the food, and packed it for Nining Qiyan, who was already drooling.
Nining Qiyan held a chicken leg. The satisfaction of that first bite was so delicious that his fox ears almost popped out.
Sure enough, cooked food is better than raw food, and food made by others is even better than what he makes himself.
Nining Qiyan knows how to cook, but only to the extent of making it edible.
Seeing someone enjoy the food they prepared is also a joy. Even though the barbecue stall owner had clearly noticed, he still asked with a chuckle: “Is it good?”
Upon receiving Nining Qiyan’s affirmative answer, the boss’s smile grew even brighter. He said, “If it’s good, come back often!”
Having wolfed down the three chicken legs, Nining Qiyan patted his stomach, clicking his tongue in lingering taste.
More customers arrived at the stall, so Nining Qiyan didn’t disturb the busy owner. He waved at him from outside the shop, regardless of whether the man could see him.
Having finished his dinner, Nining Qiyan didn’t head back to the apartment immediately. Instead, he wandered aimlessly through the neighborhood to familiarize himself with the surrounding shops.
Monsters also love nightlife, whether in the mountains or the city.
He followed the crowd, crossed several intersections, and paused in front of a shop, curious about the exquisite items inside.
He saw a red fox charm, palm-sized and fluffy, looking almost exactly like his original form. Nining Qiyan was instantly tempted, but once he saw the price was equal to the cost of three chicken legs, he immediately put it back.
Perhaps three chicken legs weren’t enough for dinner after all, so Nining Qiyan was tempted by some fried pork belly and spent a small fortune to buy a portion.
Wallet – 10.
Wait, he didn’t have a wallet, he only had his very spacious sweatshirt pocket.
After happily finishing the fried pork belly and tossing the container into a nearby trash can, Nining Qiyan clapped his hands together, ready to head back to his “nest.”
Luckily, he remembered the way; he just had to walk in the opposite direction from when he came.
On the way back, he encountered a rural dog sitting under a streetlight.
The white-furred dog was staring blankly at a single point, seemingly preoccupied.
Nining Qiyan watched it for a long while, then sneaked up and suddenly spoke: “Hello?”
The dog gave him a lazy look and wagged its tail casually.
Speak if you have something to say.
Nining Qiyan understood the dog’s “canine language.” He turned and shouted at a sparrow on a utility pole: “Little sparrow, have you eaten?”
The sparrow didn’t even look at him, flapped its wings, and flew away.
He became thoughtful. It seemed that animals in human society were just like those in the mountains; monsters could only communicate with ordinary animals of their own species.
Nining Qiyan said to the worried-looking dog: “Brother Dog, you’re really handsome.”
The dog glanced at him, turned its head, and sat under another streetlight.
How strange.
Perhaps because it was late, there weren’t as many people on the street as when he first arrived.
Nining Qiyan had been walking slowly, but when a cold gust of wind blew, he paused and pulled up his sweatshirt hood. His shadow on the ground seemed to shrink a little.
If I had known, I wouldn’t have chosen this season to come down the mountain!
But he didn’t have much money; if he bought clothes, he wouldn’t have enough to eat.
Things couldn’t go on like this. Nining Qiyan resolved to find a job. He needed to earn money!
No time like the present. That’s right, I’ll look for one tomorrow. Today, I’ll go back to sleep first.
Just as he made up his mind, Nining Qiyan suddenly heard a commotion.
Watching the spectacle is human nature, and foxes are no exception.
Nining Qiyan followed the sound and suddenly realized why there were so few people on the street—they had all gathered here to watch the scene.
The source of the commotion was a man blocking a delicate-looking boy, holding a transparent bottle in his hand, spraying spittle while taking sips of the liquid.
Nining Qiyan smelled the heavy scent of alcohol and immediately frowned.
What a harsh smell.
He rubbed his nose; now he knew what was in the transparent bottle.
The onlookers stood scattered, seemingly going about their own business, but in reality, their eyes were darting toward that direction every so often.
This made Nining Qiyan, who was staring intently, stand out.
Nining Qiyan didn’t seem to notice his own conspicuousness. He stretched his neck, his brow furrowing even deeper.
Overlooking the pungent smell of alcohol, he caught a whiff of another scent—the scent of a monster. It seemed to be…
A rabbit!
Nining Qiyan was pleasantly surprised. This was the first monster he had met in the human world; they might even be from the same mountain.
Nining Qiyan wanted to get to know his fellow countryman.
But it seemed his fellow countryman was in a bit of trouble…
He blinked, didn’t hesitate for too long, and stepped into the open space.
“What are you… pretending to be… innocent? I already… saw you dancing at the bar. The way you twisted your waist… so slutty.”
The man’s cheeks were flushed, his speech slurred and intermittent. He was clearly drunk.
Bai Tu “tsked” impatiently, slapped away the finger pointing at his head, and cursed: “You idiot, did your brain grow in your crotch? Do you need me to help you chop it off?”
The alcohol blurred the man’s senses. He didn’t hear exactly what Bai Tu said, but he knew it wasn’t anything nice.
Because he heard the words “idiot.”
The man took out his wallet, pulled out two red bills, and threw them at Bai Tu. “You want money, right? I get it, I get it. This is enough, right?”
As soon as he finished, he reached out to grab the boy’s shoulder. Bai Tu sneered, picked up the two red bills, and stuffed them directly into the man’s mouth, mocking: “You want money, right? I get it—this should satisfy you.”
The man spat out the money and roared: “Don’t be ungrateful…”
Before he could finish, Bai Tu interrupted him. He glanced at the onlookers and specifically lowered his voice: “Oh, so you know I like to be forced into doing things. Come on, hit me.”
It was the first time the man had seen someone ask to be hit. He froze for a moment, then reacted, clenching his free hand into a fist and swinging it.
Bai Tu didn’t dodge, smiling as he waited for the fist to land.
Dare to harass me? Let’s see if I don’t sue you and extort a few tens of thousands of dollars out of you.
But his wish was thwarted; the fist was stopped midway by an outside force. Bai Tu took a deep breath, tilted his head, and smiled as he looked over.
It was a fox.
To be precise, a fox that had just come down from the mountain.
The air of one who hadn’t been exposed to the world or worn down by life was evident at a glance.
“How can you hit someone?”
Nining Qiyan looked at the man disapprovingly. His thin hand held the man’s wrist firmly. The man struggled to break free, failed, struggled again, and still failed. Angry and embarrassed, he raised the bottle to strike Nining Qiyan on the forehead.
Nining Qiyan ducked, maneuvering around the man’s arm, then let go and pulled Bai Tu back a few steps.
“Are you okay?” Nining Qiyan asked.
Bai Tu’s eyes contained a hint of moisture: “I’m fine, thank you for helping me.”
Nining Qiyan: “Don’t be afraid, I’ll block it for you.”
He hadn’t forgotten the last rule of the Monster Administration: Monsters should help each other.
Bai Tu wiped away a glistening tear: “Mm-hmm.”
Why do my eyes often fill with tears? Because the money that was about to reach my pocket flew away.
Bai Tu had grievances he couldn’t speak of, because legally speaking, he was indeed trying to extort money, and morally speaking, he was deliberately provoking this drunkard, which was quite unethical.
The man finished the last drop of wine in the bottle and stumbled forward a few steps. Nining Qiyan became vigilant immediately: “Hey human, put down your weapon. We’ve already called the police.”
Bai Tu raised an eyebrow. He took out his phone, swiped to the dialer, pressed three buttons, and shook the screen behind Nining Qiyan’s back.
The man was too drunk to hear Nining Qiyan’s warning. He snorted, his voice cold: “Another slut looking for a beating. I want to see if a man’s taste is really better than a woman’s, enough to make my brother stand me up so many times.”
Nining Qiyan was puzzled. He tilted his head and asked: “What does he mean by that?”
Bai Tu pouted: “How would I know?”
He pulled Nining Qiyan back, saying: “Oh, he just drank his brain away. Don’t pay attention to this drunk, let’s leave quickly.”
Nining Qiyan saw the bloodshot eyes of the drunk man and nodded obediently, following Bai Tu as they slipped between two cars.
Who would have thought the man wouldn’t let them go, shouting loudly: “Who gave you permission to leave? Everyone, stand where you are!”
Seeing that neither of them paid any attention to him, the man was overcome with rage. He raised his hand over his head and threw the transparent wine bottle.
Nining Qiyan’s pupils constricted. He grabbed Bai Tu and crouched down. Being taller than Bai Tu, he was able to shield him for the most part.
The bottle brushed past the top of his head and landed on the windshield of the car behind them, making a loud, crisp crash. The onlookers were in an uproar, and some, seeing the situation escalating, quickly called the police.
Watching the show was fine, but a fight was another matter.
The wine bottle shattered into a spray of glass, shards piling up on the windshield wipers.
The two of them were lucky to have dodged by hiding between the cars. Nining Qiyan felt as if a few small glass shards had fallen into his hair; he shook his head, scattering a few transparent pieces.
Bai Tu picked off a tiny fragment of glass for him, his expression complex: “Thank you. Are you hurt?”
Nining Qiyan ruffled his hair with his fingers and laughed: “Luckily my hair is fluffy, I’m completely fine.”
He had two dimples on his face, which were especially noticeable when he smiled.
Bai Tu also smiled thinly and said: “I thought you carnivores were all fierce, but I didn’t expect you to be such an outlier.”
Nining Qiyan asked curiously: “Have you met other monsters?”
Bai Tu: “Of course. A gray wolf. He has a straight face every day, acting like a cool guy.”
Without comparison, there is no harm. Seemingly remembering some annoying person, Bai Tu couldn’t help but pinch Nining Qiyan’s cheek, teasing: “If only everyone was as lively and bright as you.”
Nining Qiyan: “Oh.”
He pushed Bai Tu’s shoulder lightly: “Let’s go, let’s go, before he goes crazy again.”
Just as he pulled his hand back, his head was suddenly covered by a shadow. Nining Qiyan looked up. At some point, a tall man was standing in front of them.
“Wait a moment. You two damaged my car during your argument. I’ve already called the police.”
The man stood with his back to the light, his eyes dark and unclear, yet the firm lines of his face were still visible. He wore a black overcoat, his straight legs wrapped in trousers, looking very tall. The light seemed to favor him, dancing around his body, trying to catch his attention, but to no avail.
Because the man was currently looking down at the two squatting in front of his car.
The two perpetrators who had scratched his brand-new beloved car.
Damn it.
