- Chapter 54 - Then Let’s Not Keep in Touch
The tone in Mother Xu’s voice immediately made Xu Chengjin realize something was wrong. She carefully raised her eyes, her lashes trembling slightly: “Yes.”
“Your relationship is really much better than I thought.” Mother Xu sighed softly, “Xiao Jin, there are still some things I need to make clear to you. Your sister previously not wanting you to associate with Si Yu was largely due to my instructions.”
Xu Chengjin was silent for a second. She turned her head to calm herself down, taking a deep breath before asking, “Why?”
“Si Yu is not suitable for you to associate with. I won’t say anything about a little casual fun, but if you want to develop a deeper relationship, I won’t agree.”
Mother Xu rarely looked so stern, yet her tone remained gentle: “Moreover, the Si family has had some issues recently, and I don’t really approve of your contact with her.”
“Is it because you think her luck is bad?” Xu Chengjin didn’t quite understand. She exhaled, still confused. “Or is there some other hidden reason?”
Mother Xu got up and brought the chicken soup over, blowing on it. Her voice was very soft: “Your health isn’t good, so it’s better not to interact with her. Wait until after you’re discharged and then…”
“Mom?”
Xu Chengjin reached out and grasped Mother Xu’s wrist, her eyes full of shock: “What happened to Si Yu?”
Why would Mother Xu say that? Was it because Si Yu was set up as the villain, so everyone was going to attack her?
Mother Xu put the chicken soup down, a hint of helplessness in her eyes: “Our family and the Si family have never had a good relationship. You were too young to know, but a long time ago, her mother and I were very good friends, but later we had a falling out. Of course, those are matters concerning our generation. Let’s talk about Si Yu.”
“The rumors about her being a jinx started when she was two. At that time, her father was having an affair and her mother was mentally unstable. Later, the Si family, afraid she’d be harmed, sent her to her maternal grandmother’s house. However, within six months, both elderly people suddenly died. Si Yu was present both times, which is quite a coincidence.”
Mother Xu was very calm as she spoke of these things: “The police took her in and investigated. It truly had nothing to do with Si Yu. We shouldn’t blame a child, but as Si Yu got older, her ambition grew stronger. There was a period when the Xu family’s funds were very tight, and she was the one behind it.”
“Si Yu is very aggressive in her methods and has offended many people. I don’t want you to get dragged into these troubles either.”
Mother Xu sighed at the end, looking at Xu Chengjin helplessly: “But the choice is still yours. Your father and I won’t force you.”
Xu Chengjin looked at Mother Xu for a few seconds. She blinked, then withdrew her gaze and lowered her head to start drinking the soup. She didn’t argue with Mother Xu anymore and quietly finished the soup.
“What Mom said wasn’t meant to pressure you, but I need you to know.” Even with all her indulgence, Mother Xu couldn’t let Xu Chengjin cross her bottom line. “Good girl, take a nap this afternoon. Your sister should be here soon.”
Xu Chengjin leaned against the headboard. Watching Mother Xu tidy up the remnants on the bedside table, she suddenly realized she had almost forgotten that Mother Xu herself was once wild and unrestrained when she was young. She had only restrained herself a little after having children, but the inherent desire for control in her bones had never truly disappeared.
She lowered her head. Just as Mother Xu was about to leave with the thermos, Xu Chengjin suddenly spoke: “Mom.”
Mother Xu stopped, still in that gentle manner: “What is it?”
“Do you believe in karma?” Xu Chengjin looked up and smiled, “Some people can never escape their fate. Take me, for example; I’m ultimately destined to follow the original script.”
Mother Xu frowned. She didn’t understand what Xu Chengjin meant: “What?”
“Nothing, just a random thought, just casually rambling.”
Xu Chengjin let out a light laugh. She supported herself and curled up in the blanket: “I’m sleepy, Mom.”
Seeing Xu Chengjin’s appearance, Mother Xu carefully recalled what Xu Chengjin had just said, but after a long time of pondering, she still couldn’t figure it out. She decided to leave first; she needed to give her some space.
The door was gently closed. Xu Chengjin pursed her lips and gave a small laugh. She took out her phone and immediately called Si Yu. The other side quickly picked up: “Xiao Jin, what is it?”
Xu Chengjin moved her lips but didn’t know how to speak, or where to start. Was she supposed to tell her that all of Si Yu’s experiences were set by the script, that everything was what she was supposed to endure, and that none of this was within their control?
Damn this world, go to hell!
“What did my mom say to you?”
Xu Chengjin quickly calmed down. She knew Si Yu was disliked, but she hadn’t expected the impact to be this widespread. She asked softly, “Did she tell you not to contact me? Or that you harmed me?”
There was a few seconds of silence on Si Yu’s end before she spoke. Her voice was slightly hoarse, with a hint of a blocked nose, like she had a cold: “No, I’m not that obedient.”
“Then why have you been so cold to me?”
Xu Chengjin’s face hardened. Her emotions were stable, and she was grateful that she hadn’t lost her temper with Mother Xu earlier. She let out a cold scoff: “Or are you saying you don’t think I’m good enough, that I’m not worthy of contacting CEO Si?”
“No!”
Si Yu immediately replied, her tone very firm: “I’ve genuinely been very busy lately. I’ve just been… busy taking control of things.”
“Really?”
Xu Chengjin’s eyes lowered slightly. She wanted to say something, but remembering Mother Xu’s words from just now, she couldn’t bring herself to say anything condemnatory. She sighed, waiting for Si Yu’s reply.
“Really, I wouldn’t lie to you.”
Si Yu was lying at home, looking exhausted, with a cup of hot water and cold medicine beside her hand. She had just gotten home and checked her temperature; it was already 39∘C (102.2∘F), no wonder she felt completely drained.
Was it her turn now?
She slowly sat up. Just as she was about to speak, Xu Chengjin spoke first: “Then let’s not keep in touch anymore. I’m very busy, and you’re very busy—”
“Two very busy people shouldn’t talk anymore!”
The next second, the call was abruptly ended. Si Yu shot up, looking at the ended call screen, and couldn’t help but curse: “It’s over.”
It was completely over.
