- Chapter 27 - She Fell, She Needs Coaxing
Wu Boran had originally come out to exercise, but she didn’t expect to witness a scene where Xu Chengjin was being harassed.
She only glanced in that direction and immediately recognized the person as Xu Chengjin.
“Didn’t you hear her say she wasn’t interested?” Wu Boran released the hand she was holding. Her face was stern. “Get lost.”
The woman wanted to say something more, but after being glared at by Wu Boran, she turned and left. The people around had already begun to look in their direction, and she didn’t want to make a big scene.
“Are you okay?” Wu Boran immediately asked about Xu Chengjin’s condition once the woman left. “Did she hurt you?”
Xu Chengjin shook her head: “No, you came just in time!”
Her eyes were filled with undisguised admiration. Xu Chengjin gave her a thumbs-up: “You are super cool, super awesome.”
Wu Boran was a little flustered by Xu Chengjin’s praise. She let out an “Ah,” and reached up to scratch her head: “I know, you don’t need to praise me.”
“Okay, you’re the best.”
Xu Chengjin hooked her little finger around Wu Boran’s, and she swayed it gently: “Let’s go back, I want to take a shower.”
“Sure.”
Wu Boran looked down at their intertwined fingers, then immediately looked up, pretending not to notice anything, and walked forward with a natural expression.
The rain had stopped by this time. The air was filled with the fresh scent of post-rain soil and greenery. Walking on the road felt like much of the fatigue and gloom was dissipating.
Wu Boran and Xu Chengjin walked side-by-side. Wu Boran could clearly hear something clinking and clattering in Xu Chengjin’s arms. She wanted to ask but closed her mouth several times.
In the end, it was Xu Chengjin who spoke first: “What do you want to ask?”
“What’s that thing in your arms? It keeps rattling.”
Wu Boran asked the question without hesitation, her gaze following the sound: “It’s not that I’m particularly keen to know, just curious. Everyone gets curious, you know.”
She explained a lot in one breath, afraid Xu Chengjin might misunderstand something.
Xu Chengjin, listening by her side, struggled to suppress a laugh. She said, “Okay, I understand.”
With that, she held up the tin of candy from her arms and shook it, also releasing Wu Boran’s little finger: “It’s a candy that’s been discontinued for a long time. Want to try some?”
Wu Boran lowered her head to look at her little finger. She let out a quiet “Tsk” and looked up, just about to say she wanted a piece, when she suddenly froze on the spot. Her expression was strange, an indescribable awkwardness, as if she had some secret difficulty.
Xu Chengjin was startled by Wu Boran’s sudden change. She panicked a little: “What’s wrong?”
“Nothing…”
Wu Boran didn’t want the candy anymore. She turned around and walked straight towards the dorm: “Um, I want to go back and take a shower now. You follow along.”
Xu Chengjin raised an eyebrow. She didn’t hurry to leave, but her gaze followed Wu Boran’s walking movements, discerning the reason.
Ah, so her arm was just numb.
With a smile in her eyes, Xu Chengjin quickly followed:
“Wait for me!”
When Xu Chengjin came out after showering, it was nine o’clock in the evening. She walked out, drying her hair. At this moment, Wu Boran was engrossed in playing a game and hadn’t noticed she was out.
Adhering to the principle of not prying into others’ privacy, Xu Chengjin walked straight to her own bed, pulled out her assortment of jars and bottles of medicine, and began to pop pills into her mouth.
She was usually fine with eating, but when it came to her illness, she felt a wave of irritation. She carefully counted out the pills, intending to swallow them all in one go, otherwise, her mouth would be full of a bitter taste later.
These medicines have significant side effects; right after taking them, she would feel sleepy, but it would get much better after an hour. After putting the medicine bottles away, Xu Chengjin planned to climb into bed to sleep.
But she didn’t expect that as soon as she climbed up two steps, she felt dizzy, seeing stars, and instantly felt lightheaded and unable to stand steady. Xu Chengjin fiercely grasped the handrails on both sides, but it was no use. Her body quickly tilted backward, and in that instant, her survival instinct made her immediately press her leg down, bracing herself to keep from falling completely.
“Hiss.”
Xu Chengjin’s vision was still blurry, and everything had become a double image. The pain coming from her leg made her constantly gasp for air, and her hands were trembling from gripping the rails too tightly.
She slowly stood up, bending over to wait for her body’s reaction to normalize. Xu Chengjin suspected it might be because she had caught a chill earlier, causing a reaction.
“Did I break the skin?”
Xu Chengjin’s voice was very low. She sat on her chair and gently raised her leg to check the wound. About two centimeters below her knee, the skin was completely scraped, not bleeding profusely, but the stinging pain was intense.
She took a deep breath, looked back at Wu Boran who was focused on her game, and made her movements very light as she searched for medicine. She had brought iodine and gauze, and she hadn’t expected to need them just a few days later.
Xu Chengjin was carefully and meticulously treating her wound, her attention entirely on the injury, so she didn’t notice Wu Boran behind her.
Wu Boran was very focused when playing her game. She was in a team fight, the most skilled one in the group, and also holding the commander position, so she had a lot of responsibilities. She wore headphones, speaking softly into the mic, completely unaware of what was happening in the dorm room.
Only after clearing the dungeon for the day did she quit the game. She took off her headphones, stretched her stiff body, and hummed a tune in a cheerful mood. As soon as Wu Boran turned around, she saw Xu Chengjin’s back bent over, doing something.
A very familiar smell filled the air. Wu Boran couldn’t quite place it for a moment, so she decided to quietly walk over to see what the other person was doing.
“What are you doing!”
Wu Boran suddenly appeared behind Xu Chengjin. When she saw clearly what Xu Chengjin was doing, her face instantly changed: “You’re hurt?”
“What happened?”
Wu Boran didn’t care about anything else. She immediately walked over and squatted in front of Xu Chengjin, carefully examining the injury on her leg. The scraped area had already started to turn purple. She frowned: “Let me apply the medicine for you.”
Before Xu Chengjin could say anything, Wu Boran had already taken the iodine. She braced her hands on the edge of the chair and chuckled softly: “I didn’t stand steady and almost fell, I just scraped the skin a bit, it’s nothing.”
“My body bruises easily. It might be purple here or blue there today. You don’t need to worry.”
Xu Chengjin lowered her eyes, watching Wu Boran concentrate on applying the medicine to her wound. The cotton swab really stung when it wiped across, but she didn’t utter a sound, forcing herself to act as if nothing was wrong.
“Why didn’t you call me?” Wu Boran carefully wrapped the wound with gauze, her expression complicated. “Doesn’t it hurt?”
Xu Chengjin shook her head, still in the mood to tease Wu Boran: “It really doesn’t hurt. Am I not very tough?”
Wu Boran didn’t answer. She stood up and proactively tidied Xu Chengjin’s supplies: “Did you not want to call me because you saw I was playing a game?”
“I can do these things myself.” Xu Chengjin didn’t think she was so delicate that she needed help for everything. “I have hands and feet, and I felt this wasn’t important enough to bother you with.”
Wu Boran’s expression grew colder. She tidied up Xu Chengjin’s desk with increasing force: “Yes, you don’t have to bother me with anything. You and I are just ordinary roommates. Maybe I should put up a curtain between our beds later, so we can keep to ourselves.”
Her words made Xu Chengjin detect a hint of annoyance and frustration, but it also made Xu Chengjin feel puzzled: “Are you angry?”
“Angry?”
Wu Boran scoffed with a laugh: “Hilarious. Me, angry? I’m perfectly fine. So what if my roommate hurt her leg? What does it have to do with me?”
Okay, she really was angry.
Xu Chengjin recalled their conversation, vaguely guessing the reason. She let out an “Ah,” and proactively took Wu Boran’s hand: “You are angry.”
Wu Boran stopped speaking, looking at Xu Chengjin with a cold face.
“You’re not allowed to be angry.”
“Mind your own business!”
Wu Boran immediately blew up. She wanted to shake off Xu Chengjin’s hand, but halfway through the motion, she lost her strength: “I’ll be angry if I want to be angry. Can you control me?”
“See, I told you you were angry.”
Xu Chengjin’s eyes were very clear. She firmly held Wu Boran’s hand, looking up at her expectantly: “I didn’t mean anything else, and I don’t feel like you’re sticking your nose in my business. It’s just that you were busy, and I was busy, so how could I casually infringe on your time?”
“I don’t feel like you infringed on my time.”
Wu Boran kept a straight face, but her tone was visibly softer: “You can come to me.”
“Alright, alright.”
Xu Chengjin let go of her hand. She stood up, planning to climb into bed. She cooed softly, coaxing her: “I’ll remember next time, Big Boss Wu, please forgive me.”
“Fine then.” Wu Boran was easily appeased. She walked behind Xu Chengjin and gently supported her waist: “Go to bed. I’ll help you up.”
Xu Chengjin didn’t refuse Wu Boran’s kindness. She climbed into bed under Wu Boran’s protection: “Thank you. I’m going to sleep now, okay.”
“Good night.”
Wu Boran also tread lightly and even turned off a light so Xu Chengjin could sleep better.
Xu Chengjin wasn’t very sleepy, but she just wanted to lie in bed and rest. She just turned to the side and opened her phone when she received a message from Si Yu.
Si Yu: [Did you finish showering?]
Si Yu: [I just saw your bracelet showed your heart rate wasn’t quite right. Are you feeling unwell?]
Si Yu: [Can you reply if you see the message? If you’re asleep, then tomorrow morning.]
Si Yu: [Good night, sweet dreams.]
These messages were not sent at the same time, clearly Si Yu had been worrying herself. Xu Chengjin found it amusing. She sent a little rabbit emoji looking wronged.
Si Yu replied quickly: [What’s wrong? Who made you angry? Or are you feeling wronged? Was it Wu Boran or someone else?]
Xu Chengjin originally didn’t want to say anything, but then she thought better of it and typed out a reply. Pouting, she carefully moved her leg: [I almost fell when I was climbing into bed tonight, scraped my leg, it hurts so much.]
Then, afraid her tone was too blunt, she also sent an emoji:
[Little Rabbit is super sad JPG.].
