- Chapter 19 - Biting, Saying No
Jin Xi didn’t notice Xu Chengjin’s abnormality. She continued, “I just saw the message you sent me, I didn’t expect us to run into each other the next second.”
She seemed very happy, but the other main character was clearly experiencing the exact opposite emotion.
Si Yu had been staring at her, her gaze scanning her from top to bottom, but she hadn’t spoken the entire time, nor had her expression moved even slightly.
Xu Chengjin gripped her phone tightly. She slightly turned her gaze away from Jin Xi: “Yes, what a coincidence.”
“Are you working a part-time job here?”
Xu Chengjin took a deep breath, and she looked back at Jin Xi, her eyes also containing a very noticeable smile: “What kind of work?”
Jin Xi stepped back a little to make it easier for others to enter. She said softly, “A receptionist.”
“Then, good luck!”
Xu Chengjin lightly patted Jin Xi’s shoulder, then suddenly remembered something and sharply turned her head to look at Xu’s mother , who had gotten out of the car: “Mom.”
Jin Xi and Xu’s mother had met… was this considered the first time the real mother and daughter had encountered each other?
Xu Chengjin’s breathing was a little uneven. She tensed up nervously, and many thoughts flashed through her mind—if… she would still walk towards that ultimate tragic end…
“Xiaojin, who is this?” Xu’s mother was a very serious person when it came to work, but she was very friendly in everyday life. Many people who met her for the first time felt that she was particularly nice and easy to get close to.
Xu Chengjin’s voice was a little hoarse: “She is my friend, and also my university classmate.”
Xu’s mother noticed that something was off with Xu Chengjin. A hint of worry showed in her eyes, and the next second she reached out and put her arm around Xu Chengjin: “Are you feeling unwell?”
“No,” Xu Chengjin denied directly. She cleared her throat, as if it was only a moment of hoarseness, “Just a slightly sore throat.”
Xu’s mother frowned. She sighed silently, then looked at Jin Xi: “Hello, classmate. I am Xu Chengjin’s mother. I’ll have to ask you to look after our Xiaojin at school; she isn’t in very good health.”
Jin Xi seemed not very good at talking to elders. She awkwardly stood up straight, then subconsciously averted her gaze: “No, Xiaojin is a very good person.”
“Then we’ll go in first. Come visit our home when you have a chance later.” Xu’s mother somehow produced a few candies and slipped them into Jin Xi’s palm, then walked forward with Xu’s father.
Xu Chengjin was led forward. She turned her head back halfway and saw that Jin Xi was staring at the candies in her palm… She bit her lip, feeling a pang of soreness in her heart.
Their fates were connected like this.
Xu Chengjin’s mood dropped significantly. Her peripheral vision scanned the spot where Si Yu had been standing earlier, and she found that the person was long gone. She also hadn’t received any more messages from Si Yu on her phone.
“Are you mad?”
Xu Chengjin mumbled, her voice very soft. Xu’s mother didn’t hear what she said, but instead told her to find a seat first.
“Dad and Mom are going to catch up with friends first. You sit here and wait for Mom.”
Xu’s mother rubbed Xu Chengjin’s hair, her face full of affection: “Call us if anything happens.”
“Okay.”
Xu Chengjin was settled in a lounge. The transparent balcony door allowed a clear view of the outside scenery. The room also had various fruits and snacks, as well as several game consoles for entertainment.
However, Xu Chengjin wasn’t very interested in any of these. As soon as she sat down on the sofa, she heard the doorknob of the lounge being turned. She immediately looked over, feeling inexplicably nervous.
The next second, the door to the lounge was opened. The person slowly walked up to Xu Chengjin, their voice betraying no emotion: “So I can’t even get a reply from Miss Xu.”
Xu Chengjin looked up at Si Yu, who had a cold face and no smile in her eyes. She reached out and tugged at the hem of the other person’s clothes: “Hmm, I didn’t really want to reply to you.”
Si Yu’s expression stiffened. She narrowed her eyes, staring at Xu Chengjin: “What do you mean?”
“Literal meaning.”
Xu Chengjin took Si Yu’s hand and leaned her head against the other person’s abdomen, her voice trembling slightly at the end: “I didn’t not want to reply to you, I’m just a little scared.”
Si Yu’s fingers curled, and the next second she tightly grasped Xu Chengjin’s hand. Her voice softened quite a bit: “What’s wrong? Is it because of what happened last time?”
Both of them knew exactly what “that thing” was.
Xu Chengjin said it wasn’t. She grabbed Si Yu’s clothes hard, her tone choked: “I’m just scared.”
As soon as she said this, all of Si Yu’s anger instantly vanished, and even her voice became cautious: “Can’t you tell me?”
Xu Chengjin felt the other person’s hand rubbing her back in a soothing gesture. She curled her lips—there was no hint of sadness in her eyes.
But the next second, she looked up at Si Yu: “I don’t really…”
Si Yu’s fingertip pressed against her lips, very lightly but also firmly kneading them. Xu Chengjin tilted her head back and swallowed. Her eyes were slightly dazed, but she still opened her lips and lightly bit Si Yu’s finger. She was biting it, sucking on it, with tears welling in her eyes—
She gently shook her head.
