The Sickly Double Doesn't Want to Be Spoiled - Chapter 22.1
Chapter 22.1
There seemed to be the sound of birds chirping.
Meng Yuan lifted his heavy eyelids, and amidst a vast expanse of white light, his vision gradually became clear.
His memory stopped at the night he was pushed onto the ambulance, but now it was already daytime, the exact time unknown, though he guessed it was morning.
Because at this moment, on the terrace, a bird with bright feathers was circling and chirping, and the sound of the wind was quiet.
Meng Yuan discovered he hadn’t appeared in a hospital as he had imagined, but was instead in a spacious living room.
The ceiling was high, and a wooden fan rotated slowly; it didn’t bring much wind, serving only as decoration.
He was lying on a large, soft bed, directly facing the boundless blue sea. The curtains around the bed were tied up, and there was a faint scent of gardenia on the pillow.
Meng Yuan felt dizzy for a second; when he opened his eyes again, the beautiful bird on the terrace had flown away.
He propped himself up to sit, noticing a piece of medical tape on the back of his hand, with the skin underneath showing faint blue-purple bruises from an IV.
His stomach still ached dully. Clutching his stomach, he climbed out of bed slowly. His legs lacked strength, so he leaned against the headboard for a while before walking out.
Pushing open the door, the terrace extended into another world. In front of a swing chair sat untouched red wine and cake, and an infinity pool on the left almost merged into one with the sea below.
Meng Yuan leaned against the glass railing and looked back, finally seeing their residence clearly.
It was a very unique building, looking somewhat like a bird’s nest, built around a giant Bodhi tree. The main structure was almost entirely teak and titanium alloy, merging with the jungle both primitive and futuristic.
Meng Yuan looked around curiously.
“Meng Yuan.”
Someone called his name.
Meng Yuan followed the sound and saw Lu Cong on the beach below.
Lu Cong seemed to have just finished exercising, wearing a sports brand T-shirt, with beads of sweat glistening on his forehead under the sunlight.
The sun made his features look even more intense and bold as he looked up at him with lowered brows.
“Good morning!” Meng Yuan waved happily at him, then suddenly pulled back a bit: “Is it morning?”
A bit of a smile spilled onto Lu Cong’s face as he pushed his hand toward him: “Go inside, we’ll talk.”
“Okay~”
Meng Yuan obediently returned to the bedroom.
Two minutes later, Lu Cong came up from downstairs. Upon meeting, he scanned Meng Yuan from head to toe: “Feeling better?”
“Much better,” Meng Yuan smiled sheepishly. “I must have scared you guys yesterday? Sorry about that.”
Is he caring about me?
Lu Cong paused, the corners of his mouth rising by two pixels.
“You’re overthinking it. How could I be scared?” He said nonchalantly.
“That’s good.” Meng Yuan was originally just being polite, and his mind immediately flew away: “The place we’re staying is so beautiful!”
Lu Cong: “…”
The concern vanished instantly, leaving Lu Cong dazed for a moment.
Meng Yuan sat on the bed, happily stroking the soft fabric: “Sister Qin Qing mentioned booking a hotel before, but I didn’t expect her to book one this good.”
“I booked it,” Lu Cong said.
Meng Yuan: “?”
“And the ownership of this house belongs to me,” Lu Cong emphasized.
Meng Yuan: “Heavens, you’re so amazing!”
Receiving the boy’s sincere praise mixed with admiration, Lu Cong’s mood improved slightly.
“You just need to remember that I’m better than Qin Qing in every way.”
Meng Yuan tried to balance the scales: “Sister Qin Qing is also amazing. You’re both very capable. Why must there be a winner? I’m the least capable, okay?”
You were always the least capable.
Qin Qing, Qin Qing, Qin Qing. Waking up in the morning and chanting someone else’s name does he like that housekeeper that much?
Lu Cong stared at Meng Yuan without a word, his brow furrowed, his expression complex.
“Don’t forget that Qin Qing only entered this house because she follows my orders.”
The implication was for Meng Yuan to regulate his words and actions and realize deeply that he, Lu Cong, was the head of this household.
“Ah…” Meng Yuan blinked. “I know that. You told me on the first day.”
This kid didn’t get the subtext.
Lu Cong sucked in a breath.
“Forget it,” he waved his hand. “Forget it.”
Knock, knock.
The door was knocked.
After receiving permission, Qin Qing pushed the door open and entered.
“Xiao Yuan, are you up? How are you feeling today?”
She was already dressed in vacation attire, looking much more energetic than usual, holding a water cup in her hand.
“Much better, just my stomach hurts a little bit,” Meng Yuan said honestly.
Lu Cong looked sideways: “I just asked you, why didn’t you say so?”
Meng Yuan: “.”
He shut his mouth.
“Still uncomfortable?” Hearing this, Qin Qing got nervous and hurried to Meng Yuan’s side, saying gravely: “Your complexion isn’t great.”
She stuffed the water cup into Meng Yuan’s hand: “Drink some warm water first, Xiao Yuan.”
Then she made a call, and soon the medical team arrived in a grand procession.
Meng Yuan was pressed onto the sofa, clutching his stomach with both hands, his face pale and his expression nervous: “Is all this exaggeration necessary…”
“Don’t worry about it, Xiao Yuan, you have to listen to me on this,” Qin Qing said seriously. “Anything regarding the body is a major matter. Yesterday was terrifying. You don’t even know how much your blood oxygen dropped. President Lu was so scared he couldn’t even speak”
“Ahem!”
The voice was interrupted.
Meng Yuan looked over. Not far away, Lu Cong sat by the dining table, legs crossed, elegantly looking at a newspaper in his hand.
The entire villa’s decoration was in the local characteristic weaving style, and many plants were grown indoors, shining lushly in the sun, making Lu Cong look leisurely and casual.
However, Meng Yuan felt this person was being very pretentious. Who still reads newspapers these days? Furthermore, was that even a real newspaper?
Meng Yuan had observed earlier that the island was secluded and sparsely populated; no one delivered newspapers at all. What Lu Cong was holding was likely a decorative item left over from who-knows-what year.
Yet he seemed to be reading it with great interest.
Probably sensing Meng Yuan’s gaze, Lu Cong straightened his back even more, even slightly turning his face to inadvertently reveal his sharp jawline.
He rubbed his neck, making “ahem, ahem” sounds constantly.
Meng Yuan: “.” Dazed.
“Did he eat something that’s stuck in his throat?” he asked Qin Qing. “Has he had breakfast?”
He actually secretly had breakfast without me?! Despicable.
The more Meng Yuan thought about it, the angrier he got.
He also really wanted to eat the local specialty food! Lu Cong actually didn’t wait for him; what a bad person!
Hiss, my stomach still hurts. Meng Yuan bent over slightly.
However, even stomach pain couldn’t cover his desire for food. Meng Yuan swallowed his saliva.
Qin Qing couldn’t help laughing: “No, no, President Lu is waiting for you. We are all waiting for you. How could we eat before Xiao Yuan arrives? We wouldn’t be happy eating without you.”
Qin Qing truly was a master of housekeeping with a minor in child psychology; in just a few words, she had Meng Yuan’s lips curling up.
Meng Yuan’s hair was still messy from waking up, with a few tufts of hair sticking out in all directions. Holding a cushion, his dimples flickered, and his expression held a hint of small pride.
“Then I’ll finish seeing the doctor quickly so we can eat breakfast together.”
“Okay,” Qin Qing said softly. “I’ll go have them prepare the meal. You can eat as soon as the check-up is done.”
Meng Yuan nodded, his eyes sparkling, but he couldn’t stop peeking behind him.
No other reason than Lu Cong’s presence being too strong.
Even though this man wasn’t speaking, he moved from time to time, shaking the newspaper in his hand and “ahem-ing” nonstop.
If you said he wanted to attract attention, he clearly knew Meng Yuan was looking at him yet didn’t turn his head, maintaining an air of being perfectly content on his own.
Meng Yuan stared at him for a while, his eyes a bit blank. He curled his finger at Qin Qing and said in a small, puzzled voice:
“But something really is stuck in his throat.”
Qin Qing almost burst out laughing, covering her mouth as her shoulders shook.
“Don’t… don’t mind him,” she laughed until she was out of breath. “He’s just like that. As soon as he’s not working, he doesn’t know what to do, so he appears rather nonsensical.”
“Is that so…”
Meng Yuan looked at Lu Cong a few more times, a trace of sympathy entering his eyes.
This is a symptom of going crazy from work. He could relate to that all too well.
“Alright, Xiao Yuan,” Qin Qing patted his shoulder. “Sit properly, let’s have the doctor check you.”
The doctor, carrying a portable ECG and blood oxygen monitoring equipment, performed a detailed physical assessment for Meng Yuan.
“How has your sleep quality been recently? Do you often feel fatigued? Are dizziness and palpitations frequent?”
“Sleep… is okay, occasionally I have nightmares,” Meng Yuan said truthfully. “As for fatigue, maybe it’s just that I’m lazy? It seems like there’s never a time when I’m not tired.”
The doctor raised the corners of his mouth helplessly: “Alright, I understand.”
Meng Yuan grinned, and Qin Qing cast a helpless look at him.
“As for dizziness and palpitations, I…” Meng Yuan stalled for a moment.
Shifting his gaze upward, he saw Lu Cong walking over.
This “Great Lord” suddenly moved his esteemed self, but he didn’t speak he just stood beside the doctor without a word, arms crossed, looking at Meng Yuan.
Being stared at, Meng Yuan forgot what he was going to say.
“Dizziness and palpitations?” After a moment, the doctor prompted.
“Oh,” Meng Yuan snapped back. “It’s okay. They happen occasionally but aren’t serious. It’s more noticeable with a bit of exercise.”
“Alright,” the doctor asked again. “When was your last blood routine test?”
Meng Yuan: Dazed…
He didn’t remember. Since getting this disease, his memory has been poor.
Qin Qing immediately went to flip through her memos.
“The 13th of last month,” Lu Cong said.
As the words fell, both Meng Yuan and Qin Qing were stunned.
Meng Yuan cast an inquiring look at Qin Qing, who also found the memo and nodded: “He’s right.”
In the brief gap, Lu Cong had even pulled up the blood routine report on his phone and handed it to the doctor.
The doctor took it, looked it over, and cross-referenced it with the current test results, nodding: “Alright, no problems.”
“Can his body adapt to the sightseeing activities for this trip?” Lu Cong asked. “Will it be unfavorable for his recovery?”
The sudden concern made the hair on Meng Yuan’s back stand up.
What was with this tone of concern?
Meng Yuan’s heart was drumming. Logically, Lu Cong shouldn’t want his health to be too good.
“It’s fine,” the doctor smiled. “As long as it’s not too strenuous exercise, it’s okay. Young Master Meng’s condition is well-controlled. Maintaining a happy mood is also beneficial for physical recovery.”
“Good, thank you.” Lu Cong nodded with a smile.
He looked happy, but Meng Yuan’s heart was in turmoil.
…
Breakfast was enjoyed in an open-air pavilion facing the lagoon.
Meng Yuan and Lu Cong had a table to themselves, while Qin Qing and Song Zhen shared another.
The chef introduced his culinary philosophy for each dish as he served them.
Meng Yuan didn’t understand a single letter; he just felt the juice and fish were quite delicious, but the vegetables were not good and extremely bitter.
He drank more than half of the juice, licked his lips, and whispered to Lu Cong: “What fruit is this squeezed from? It’s sweet and sour and delicious, but has a tiny bit of bitterness.”
“It’s a mix of local fresh fruits and Noni fruit,” Lu Cong said. “Noni fruit is high in potassium, which you can’t eat much of, so only a little was added, that’s the bitterness you tasted.”
He watched Meng Yuan; the boy’s eyes were bright, his lips moistened by the juice, and his large eyes were filled with a hesitant longing.
Lu Cong saw through it at a glance: “Want some more?”
“Yes!”
Meng Yuan’s smile made all his features relax, and the little dimples at the corners of his mouth were especially beautiful.
Lu Cong turned his head and smiled unconsciously, ordering another glass for him.
