- Chapter 6 - Feng Yu, I Agree to the Breakup
Shen Congbai felt inexplicably aggrieved. Perhaps that surreal dream whether real or not had given him a spark of courage. He looked up and cast a resentful glare at Feng Yu. “It’s all your fault.”
Feng Yu was already breaking a sweat; being glared at only fanned the flames of his inner fire. He carried the youth back into the bedroom. A few drops of sweat slid down his chiseled face, falling from the tip of his nose with a “splat” onto Shen Congbai’s exposed, snowy-white collarbone.
Ultimately, when Shen Congbai reached out to wipe the sweat away, Feng Yu gritted his teeth. Ignoring his own disheveled state, he abruptly stood up and fled the room without looking back.
Lying on the bed, Shen Congbai watched the man’s frantic retreat. Remembering Feng Yu’s flustered appearance, a glimmer of a smile flashed in his eyes. He buried himself deeper into the quilt, taking several deep breaths to finally steady his racing heart.
Serves you right, you biting bad dog.
Meanwhile, at Port A.
Dark clouds gathered in the sky like heavy ink, split occasionally by jagged streaks of lightning that brought terrifying roars of thunder. Dozens of people stood in formation along the pier, hands at their sides, surrounding a tall, imposing man. No one dared to even breathe loudly.
Shen Que adjusted his cufflinks. His voice wasn’t loud, yet it struck everyone’s heart like a heavy stone: “Is the man caught?”
The person in charge felt the clothes on his back soak through with cold sweat. Hearing the question, he managed a fawning smile. “Sir, that kid ran too fast, we.”
“I only want to see results,” Shen Que interrupted unhurriedly, his eyelids lowered, his dark pupils emitting a chilling, terrifying light. “A single crew member nearly ruined such a massive project of mine. Xu Sheng, I will give you three days at most. If I still haven’t seen the person.”
Buzz—Buzz—
The vibration of the phone in his pocket cut him off. Shen Que frowned in annoyance. He glanced at the screen, and a flash of disgust crossed his eyes when he saw the caller ID.
The dog never visits except on business; what is this bastard calling me for now?
He glanced sideways at the wailing Xu Sheng, then turned toward a secluded spot. “Hello.”
“Brother!”
“…”
Shen Que moved the phone away from his ear and checked the contact’s name again. “Feng Yu, are you sick?”
He had no desire to deal with whatever petty grievance Feng Yu was calling about and was just about to hang up when the sound on the other end grew louder. Shen Congbai had finally managed to snatch the phone from Feng Yu. His breath was still a bit hitched, transmitting directly through the receiver into Shen Que’s ear.
He pleaded, “Brother, don’t hang up.”
Shen Que was stunned. “Why are you calling me from Feng Yu’s phone?”
Shen Congbai wanted to cry, but had no tears. “My phone is gone. I have to use his.”
Feng Yu, standing by, let out a sneer. “Shen Que, when are you taking your brother back? He’s about to tear my clothes to shreds.”
Hearing the breathing on the other side of the line turn heavy and cold, Shen Congbai covered the receiver. He cast a reproachful, watery glare at Feng Yu and quickly explained, “No, I haven’t! He’s talking nonsense.”
Shen Congbai clutched the shirt in his hand, feeling incredibly embarrassed that he had once again become a burden to Shen Que.
“Brother… I accidentally broke one of Feng Yu’s cufflinks, but I lost my phone and I don’t have enough money…”
“I told you it’s fine. Just be good and let me hit you to vent my anger,” Feng Yu interjected, shrugging. He showed a canine tooth, adding maliciously, “I’ll be gentle.”
Hearing the youth’s pitiable whimpers through the phone, Shen Que listened silently to their exchange. His gaze grew colder and colder.
Truly disobedient. He had only been away for a short while, yet the boy was already entangled with Feng Yu again.
The rising fire in his heart was expertly suppressed. Shen Que’s voice remained flat and emotionless: “I will have someone contact Feng Yu. You go home first.”
Drip—Drip—
Rain began to fall slowly from above. Shen Que watched small puddles ripple on the ground, the water reflecting his expressionless, handsome face.
He whispered, “Wuwu, you have to be good.”
If he continued to be this disobedient, Shen Que felt he might truly go mad.
A busy tone sounded from the phone. Shen Congbai gently rubbed his numb ear, feeling that Shen Que’s tone just now had been a bit strange.
But he quickly brushed it off. He had caused trouble on his second day back in the country; it was normal for Shen Que to be angry.
“Sigh!” He let out a long, deep sigh. He’d have to take it slow. After all, he really had been a piece of work in the past. It was impossible to change Shen Que’s opinion of him overnight.
Seeing Shen Congbai’s lingering, reluctant look after hanging up, Feng Yu felt an inexplicable itch in his teeth. He turned his head away, not wanting to look.
Shen Congbai, thinking he was still brooding over the cufflink, said softly, “Why are you still angry? It’s just one cufflink. I’ll buy ten to pay you back later.”
He recalled the look of the cufflink to himself, failing to notice Feng Yu’s gradually dimming gaze. “Though, that cufflink looked a bit old. The edges were even worn down.”
“Heh.”
A low, mocking laugh drifted into Shen Congbai’s ear. He looked at Feng Yu. The man’s expression was desolate, his amber eyes shimmering with a faint light, suppressing something Shen Congbai couldn’t quite see.
Feng Yu said, “Shen Congbai, you really don’t have a heart.”
This wasn’t the first time Feng Yu had said this to him. Shen Congbai was confused and a bit angry. “You’re talking nonsense.”
He had just been reborn and immediately thought of coming back to get close to Feng Yu and apologize. He had talked to him so much despite the rejection; even Shen Que hadn’t said that about him. What right did Feng Yu have to say he had no heart?
Shen Congbai looked disappointed. “Clearly, it’s you who doesn’t understand me.”
Perhaps the reason they ended up that way in their past life wasn’t just because of him. Like a young child, he retorted childishly, “You’re the one without a heart!”
Feng Yu took a step forward. His height standing nearly 190cm made him look like a lion. He suppressed his erupting emotions, forcing Shen Congbai back against the corner of the table. “I don’t understand you? I have no heart?”
Anger scorched his logic like a prairie fire. A massive force gripped Shen Congbai’s wrist, forcing his palm onto the man’s heart. At the same time, a large hand clamped onto Shen Congbai’s own chest.
Two completely different heartbeats were transmitted into Shen Congbai’s brain through their contact. One was the rapid thumping from his palm, hitting his hand like a heavy hammer. The other, in comparison, was incredibly steady, moving at its own pace, unaffected by anything external.
He looked up dazed, only to meet a pair of bloodshot, beast-like eyes. It suddenly overlapped with that surreal dream, leaving him in a trance.
Feng Yu retracted his hand and exhaled a heavy breath. His broad shoulders were actually trembling slightly. “Go.”
“No need for apologies or compensation. Never show up in front of me again.”
“Shen Congbai, that breakup you proposed three years ago, I agree to it.”
Shen Congbai’s eyes instantly turned red. His heart felt like it had plummeted into an abyss. Looking into Feng Yu’s eyes, he felt like he had lost something vital.
His throat felt as dry as if it had been cut by a knife. Shen Congbai’s voice was hoarse: “What did you say?”
Feng Yu closed his eyes. “As you wished. We are even.”
“I don’t want to see you again. Young Master, please leave.”
This sequence of words made Shen Congbai feel humiliated. He was not the type to lower himself to beg for reconciliation; the courage to talk to Feng Yu since their meeting had been fueled solely by his desire to apologize. Having been rejected repeatedly, he wanted nothing more than to crawl into a hole and never see Feng Yu again for the rest of his life.
Without waiting for Feng Yu to respond, he left the man’s house just as he was, wearing pajamas that were several sizes too big.
The house fell into instant silence. Feng Yu could still smell the faint, lingering scent of medicine in the air, which made his heart feel inexplicably flustered and irritated.
The weather outside seemed to mirror his mood. The previously clear sky was suddenly whipped by a strong wind, and a massive bank of dark clouds rolled in. The light dimmed as if rain were imminent.
Feng Yu opened his phone to check the weather. Thinking about how Shen Congbai had left in only pajamas without even a jacket, he wondered.
Suddenly, a ringtone echoed in the living room. Feng Yu’s heart skipped a beat. He walked toward the sound and saw Shen Congbai’s phone vibrating relentlessly with an alarm. Below it was a short note: ‘Remember to take medicine.’
Feng Yu watched coldly until the alarm stopped. He thought to himself that Shen Congbai must have done this on purpose using the forgotten phone as an excuse to keep staying by his side and toy with him like a dog. He probably hadn’t even left, but was waiting at the door for Feng Yu to break and bring him the phone, so he could act all smug and boss him around again.
Meanwhile, Shen Congbai was walking aimlessly down the road, his wide pajama hems flapping in the wind. He looked up at the sky and realized it was already overcast, looking like it would pour at any second.
He instinctively reached for his phone to call a car to a hotel, only to remember he had no idea where he’d left it.
A few scattered raindrops began to fall. Shen Congbai looked around. There wasn’t even a bus stop near where Feng Yu lived. Thinking about the past two days, he felt a wave of grievance and took it all out on Feng Yu: “Bad guy. I shouldn’t have come to find you.”
If he hadn’t seen Feng Yu, he wouldn’t have had to humiliate himself. He might still be sleeping at Tu Zhizhi’s house right now.
The rain grew heavier. Shen Congbai glanced back at the direction he had come from, then gritted his teeth and ran in the opposite direction.
Even if he froze to death tonight, he would absolutely not go back and beg Feng Yu to let him stay!
