- Chapter 9 - If I Go to a Hotel with Someone
After the meeting ended, many people rushed off excitedly to prepare response plans, striving to align their designs more closely with Qing Zhe himself.
In truth, they thought to themselves that the design did not really matter; given Qing Zhe’s face, he would look good even if he were wearing a burlap sack.
Jiang Ningxun was not in a good mood. As he walked out slowly, a female elite approached him and actually suggested, “Would you mind taking a photo, please?”
“Ah, oh,” Jiang Ningxun took her phone, assuming he was taking a photo of her.
The female elite shook her head. “It is to take one of yourself.”
“??”
What did she want his photo for?
The female elite explained, “I am a talent manager. I find your looks and temperament very suitable for entering the entertainment industry.”
Before she could even finish, Jiang Ningxun was already waving his hands in refusal. He recalled the darkness of the industry that Song Shidu had once shown him, and he was so frightened that he did not dare entertain the slightest thought of joining that world.
Out of professional courtesy for future collaboration, Jiang Ningxun took a photo of himself anyway.
Click.
“There.”
The female elite spoke again: “Would it be convenient to leave a phone number as well?”
Jiang Ningxun was puzzled: “Why?”
“Because you arrived late. Everyone before you has already left theirs; only yours is missing.”
“I see.” Jiang Ningxun fluently wrote down his current phone number on a piece of paper and looked up: “Is there anything else?”
The female elite pursed her lips, seemingly hesitant to ask, but she was forced to ask anyway: “Your current residential address.”
“This, this is required too?” Jiang Ningxun looked at her suspiciously. “Did the people before me really leave all of this?”
The female elite remained serious: “Understanding a partner’s basic information is standard practice in the industry. Just like in school, teachers ask about parents’ jobs and income, such privacy. It is not strange.”
Jiang Ningxun’s pen stalled. He suspected this female elite might very well be Qing Zhe’s manager. After thinking it over, he wrote down the address anyway.
Without looking up, Jiang Ningxun said, “All of this information can be found in my employee file.”
After finishing, he handed the basic information to her.
The female elite nodded: “Good, that is all. I hope to see you often within the same circle in the future.”
Jiang Ningxun actually wanted to say that he did not want this opportunity to collaborate, specifically, he did not want to do the styling for Qing Zhe. But saying that would be like a slap in the face, so he could only manage an awkward, polite smile.
Once she left, Jiang Ningxun returned to the workspace to get back to work.
Outside the door.
After the female elite got into her car, she took out her phone and sent a message to someone.
[Female Elite]: Here is the information you wanted. Take a look.
A long time passed before the other side replied: [He has gotten thinner.]
The female elite slapped her forehead, her fingers flying across the screen: [Living Ancestor, that is enough! You are famous now, so you think you can be willful? Do you know how popular you are right now? Your career is not stable yet, what would your fans think? You are not allowed to sneak out behind my back anymore! Otherwise, I will have you arrested as a stalker!]
The other side did not reply to that, instead asking: [Is he willing?]
The female elite responded quickly: [No. At least for now, he has not shown a shred of interest. However, for the sake of money, it might be possible.]
The other side: [Understood.]
[Female Elite]: Can you focus on filming now?
The other side: [I can. Even seeing a photo is good.]
The female elite sighed deeply. She looked out the window at the neon-lit streets where familiar endorsements hung on giant screens. Everyone only saw the surface, including her. But after interacting with him, she realized it was very stifling.
9:00 PM.
Jiang Ningxun squinted his dead-fish eyes, working overtime. Furthermore, he was not being paid for it.
The other employees had all left. Only Jiang Ningxun and one other person remained: the boss, Ji Zhan.
High-concentration coffee sat by Ji Zhan’s hand. The eerie glow of the computer screen cast a light on his face like that of a male ghost. His dark circles were filled with resentment, his hands never stopped tapping the keyboard, and he occasionally frustratedly grabbed his hair over certain issues.
Jiang Ningxun glanced over gloomily. It was not that he loved selfless devotion to the company; it was because after receiving the collaboration invitation from Qing Zhe’s studio, all the other stylists had eagerly signed up. Ji Zhan had sent them home early to prepare.
Since Jiang Ningxun had not signed up, he was naturally left behind to work for free all night.
How annoying.
Jiang Ningxun slumped over his desk, his soft fox ears drooping unhappily in a fit of melancholy. He really wanted to see Shidu, and he wanted to eat chicken legs.
Just then, Ji Zhan spoke up from across the room: “Are the documents I asked you to organize finished?”
“Almost, almost.” Jiang Ningxun looked up sluggishly and continued working.
“Thanks for the hard work! I baked some sweets myself, you two should try some.”
Bai Roulian pushed open the door and walked in, carrying a tray of steaming bear-shaped cookies. He placed one into the mouth of the still-working Ji Zhan. Ji Zhan chewed, but his eyes remained glued to the computer as if nothing could interrupt his work.
It was a mystery how such a hardworking guy managed to run the company further into the ground.
Feeling distressed for him, Bai Roulian stroked Ji Zhan’s cheek to soothe his fatigue before moving to bring the rest of the cookies to Jiang Ningxun.
Unexpectedly, Ji Zhan grabbed his wrist and looked up: “They are not all for me?”
Bai Roulian: “You cannot finish this many by yourself. Besides, Brother Ningxun helped me carry my suitcase upstairs, and I have not thanked him yet.”
Ji Zhan clearly did not want these sweets falling into anyone else’s mouth, but he could not completely abandon his humanity. “Fine.”
Hearing this from a distance, Jiang Ningxun immediately waved his hand: “I will not eat. I have to save room for the dinner my boyfriend is preparing for me.”
Fortunately, he did not have to swallow their dog food because he had a boyfriend of his own.
Speak of the devil, his phone rang. The caller was Song Shidu.
“Boss, I am going to take a call.”
“Mhm.”
Jiang Ningxun went into the hallway and happily answered the phone, asking knowingly, “Why are you calling?”
“To pick you up from work.”
“Why is the call so late today? What have you been doing behind my back?”
Song Shidu chuckled softly: “I should be the one asking. Where is that little fox who usually squats at the company entrance every night waiting for me? Why is he nowhere to be seen today?”
Jiang Ningxun’s ears perked up, and his tail swayed slowly. He smiled mischievously: “What else? I went to a hotel with someone.”
“Oh? Which one?”
“Why are you asking for details? If I am going to a hotel with someone, do I have to tell you the exact address?”
There was a long silence from Song Shidu’s end. Jiang Ningxun’s playful mood began to sink. Not possible, did I go too far? This guy is usually pretty smart; he could not actually believe it, right? Why is he not saying anything?
Jiang Ningxun got a bit anxious and wanted to clarify: “Actually,”
“Are you working overtime?”
Jiang Ningxun’s heart skipped a beat, but he remained stubborn: “I told you, I am at a hotel with someone. Do you not know that when a man says he is working overtime, he is usually working at a hotel?”
Song Shidu: “Ah, then it is very quiet on your end. I thought you were the only one working overtime. The lights in the fourth-floor workspace are all on.”
Jiang Ningxun turned around. Sure enough, it was very obvious that someone was working.
Song Shidu: “I am outside waiting for you to get off work. You will see me as soon as you come out.”
“Song Shidu.” Jiang Ningxun was not annoyed at being caught; he just asked relentlessly, “If I really did go to a hotel with someone, not as a joke, what would you do?”
“The question you are asking is very cruel.”
“Just say it!”
The other end of the phone went quiet again for a moment. A moment later, Song Shidu’s hoarse voice came through: “Do you want to hear the truth?”
“Yes!”
“I would find the address of the hotel, and then I would go there in the middle of the night and kill that person.”
