It was 20:00, and the room was dim.

Jiang Ningxun’s body temperature remained scorching. He was awoken by a sharp, agonizing pain in his abdomen. Slowly pushing himself up, he called out, “Shidu, please bring me a glass of warm water.”

There was no response.

He opened his hazy, unfocused eyes. The bedroom was empty. He remembered falling asleep in Song Shidu’s arms, but now the man was gone.

Clutching his stomach, Jiang Ningxun walked out to the living room, but no one was there. The shoes at the door were missing; Song Shidu must have gone out to run an errand.

He had no choice but to pour the warm water himself, but drinking it did not alleviate the pain.

Seeing the wolf plushie on the sofa, Jiang Ningxun pulled it into his arms and curled up, unwilling to move. He held his stomach tightly as waves of heat radiated from deep within his body. He felt as though he were trapped in a sea of fire. Something was quietly changing.

Only the plushie in his arms offered a shred of comfort.

After an unknown amount of time, the front door opened.

Song Shidu rushed back, bringing a gust of cold air with him. He did not even have time to take off his shoes before he saw the fox curled into a tight ball on the sofa. Jiang Ningxun’s eyes were squeezed shut, sweat beaded on his forehead, and he gripped the plushie like a lifeline.

Song Shidu strode over to the sofa. His cool hand touched Jiang Ningxun’s forehead; it was still incredibly hot.

The touch of coolness prompted Jiang Ningxun to nuzzle into it unconsciously. He slowly opened his eyes and asked, “Where did you go?”

“I went to buy heating pads and some vegetables.”

Song Shidu knelt on the floor, his dark eyes fixed on the person on the sofa. He asked, “Is your stomach still hurting badly?”

Jiang Ningxun nodded weakly. “Mhm.”

Song Shidu sighed. He turned and went into the bedroom, returning a moment later with a warm coat. “Let us go. We are going to the hospital right now.”

“What? Right now?”

Jiang Ningxun was lifted into his arms. Like a doll, he was dressed by Song Shidu, who put on his socks and shoes and even applied a heating pad to his lower abdomen. After such a swift series of actions, Jiang Ningxun had no chance to refuse.

Song Shidu said seriously, “We cannot let an illness drag on. If something is wrong, we will face it together.”

Hearing those words, Jiang Ningxun’s fingers curled tightly. He felt a sense of peace and found the courage to face whatever was coming.

However, he could not stop his mind from wandering. His voice was muffled as he said, “If I have some kind of incurable disease, do not spend too much money on me.”

“Silly.”

Song Shidu ruffled his hair firmly, his tone gentle. “Instead of thinking about that, think about what delicious things you want to eat tonight after the check-up.”

“I want fried chicken legs, cola chicken wings, and more,” Jiang Ningxun looked up to recite a menu.

The next second, Song Shidu interrupted with a smile. “No. You are eating vegetarian with me tonight.”

“Why?”

“It is healthy.”

“You just think I am fat.”

“It is because you are sick and cannot eat fried foods.”

The two continued their banter as they slowly made their way downstairs.

They arrived at the hospital quickly by car. In the quiet night, the hospital stood like a guardian, radiating bright light. The scent of disinfectant filled the corridors, and the cold tile floors reflected the dim glow of the emergency lights.

Jiang Ningxun sat on a chair, nervously clutching the hem of his clothes. He watched Song Shidu finish the registration process before the man came back to sit beside him, gently rubbing his hand over Jiang Ningxun’s cool palm.

“It will be fine. I am here.”

Jiang Ningxun took a deep breath. He kept chanting to himself, “It is fine, it is fine. Just as long as it is not cancer or something like that! Please, please! Let heaven favor me this once, and I promise to turn over a new leaf and eat fewer chicken legs in the future!”

After a short wait, Jiang Ningxun’s name was called. The examination was finished ten minutes later.

Jiang Ningxun sat upright across from the doctor, his eyes like lasers as he watched the man with intense anticipation. He thought, “Say something, hurry up and say something! What does that frown mean!”

“Doctor, what is the illness? Is it serious?”

The doctor hummed for a while, resting his chin in his hand. “This is strange.”

He looked at Jiang Ningxun, who was nearly scared to death. “How old are you this year?”

“Twenty-three.”

“Hiss.” The doctor took a long breath, his expression shifting repeatedly.

The hearts of the two men nearly stopped at this reaction.

Jiang Ningxun struggled to hold back the tears in his eyes, his voice trembling as he asked, “Doctor, just tell me clearly. How long do I have left to live?”

“It is hard to say.”

“Not even a year!?”

The doctor wagged his index finger. “No, no, no. It is entirely possible for you to live to be a hundred.”

The two were speechless.

The doctor’s expression shifted from serious to surprised, then to curious, and finally to cheerful. He said, “Do not be nervous; it is nothing serious. It is just that your situation is quite unique. This is a first in our country, and it is the first time I have ever encountered it.”

Song Shidu asked tensely, “What is it?”

The two were a bit confused. What did secondary differentiation mean?

By then, you will be a normal Omega.”

Jiang Ningxun slapped the table and stood up, looking pleasantly surprised. “So I am an Omega now!”

Since they were foxes, that was somewhat normal.

Jiang Ningxun’s face turned pale. He understood instantly. His two fathers were always out philandering; a mutation could lead to anything.

Afterward, Song Shidu carefully asked for more details, such as how to take care of him during this period.
