- Chapter 26 - Identity – A Pitiful Performance
“You—”
Mo Qinan’s mouth hung open in disbelief. He pointed at Song Mingjiao, so shocked that he was rendered speechless.
Song Mingjiao offered a faint smile, hiding his merit and fame deep within.
Regarding Director Qiu’s connection, Mo Qinan had assumed it was the result of his manager’s hard work. In reality, it was Song Mingjiao pulling the strings behind the scenes; otherwise, it was a level Mo Qinan couldn’t have even touched.
As for Director Qiu, the old gentleman didn’t pay much attention to the latest gossip in the entertainment industry. A few subtle hints were enough to make Director Qiu believe that he and Mo Qinan shared a profound relationship.
Actually, it wasn’t exactly a deception. Given the previous data, the signs of intimacy between Song Mingjiao and Mo Qinan were far too easy to find, supplemented by the evidence of their connection through the entertainment company.
Song Mingjiao had simply kept this hidden thread buried like danging an apple in front of a donkey, constantly leading him on and playing him, just waiting for today to pull the line and watch a good show.
Song Mingjiao knew Director Qiu would ask to meet him today. Director Qiu belonged to the older generation, having lived through the last century, and preferred an elegant, refined style. Consequently, Song Mingjiao had specifically changed into a particular outfit for the occasion.
Director Qiu had yet to notice the friction between the two. He still believed that inviting Song Mingjiao’s friend along would be a pleasant surprise for “little friend Mingjiao.”
Investors were a common sight in the industry, and not every relationship was tainted by the kind of “casting couch” transactions Mo Qinan engaged in. Naturally, Director Qiu didn’t think in that direction; after all, in the eyes of his elders, Song Mingjiao was indeed the “well-behaved” type.
“Mingjiao, I specifically had someone look into it. You and this Mo Qinan are on quite good terms, right? Sigh, I previously thought you had no interest in the entertainment circle. If I had known you had close friends in the industry, I could have looked out for them sooner.”
Director Qiu gestured for Mo Qinan to take a seat. Usually, he was either directing a scene or seeking inspiration for a new project; he didn’t follow trending topics or online public opinion, so he was unaware of the recent variety show incidents.
Mo Qinan’s facial muscles twitched as he forced a stiff smile, at a loss for words.
The great hope he once felt about climbing this “high branch” that was Director Qiu was now matched by an equal measure of embarrassment.
Especially back when Song Mingjiao hadn’t kicked him out yet he had been secretly looking for other paths. He thought he had earned the great director’s favor through his own ability, only to find out it was all thanks to Song Mingjiao’s grace in the end?
Mo Qinan clenched his fists beneath the table.
But things had already reached this point. Mo Qinan took a deep breath, acted as if he didn’t see the gaze Song Mingjiao was throwing his way, and managed his expression. He spoke only to Director Qiu: “Yes, Mingjiao and I have a very good relationship. I—”
Before he could finish, the crisp sound of a teacup falling and shattering on the table broke the atmosphere in the private room.
From the moment Mo Qinan entered, Song Mingjiao had been resting his chin on one hand, watching the performance. It wasn’t until now that he “accidentally” broke the cup.
“Oh dear, I’m sorry, Uncle Qiu. I’ve broken the tea set you just gave me.”
He lifted his beautiful eyes and looked across the table. The cup had shattered right by his hand, though fortunately, there was no scalding tea left inside.
“Are you hurt? A tea set isn’t nearly as important as a person. Let me see your hand.” Hearing the commotion, Director Qiu left Mo Qinan hanging and hurried over, grabbing Song Mingjiao’s wrist to check. Luckily, there was no injury.
He prepared to ring the bell. “Quick, quick, I’ll have them bring a new set. Be careful of the shards.”
The wide sleeve of Song Mingjiao’s robe was soaked through a section, clinging to his wrist and emphasizing the slenderness of his arm.
This was a new outfit he had carefully chosen! It was airy, beautiful, and he loved it! The price of today’s scheme was truly too high!
Song Mingjiao protected his sleeve and stopped Director Qiu’s movements. Under Director Qiu’s somewhat puzzled gaze, he gave a soft laugh and explained:
“Once a teacup is broken, it’s broken. Even if you replace it, it’s hard to find it likable again. People are the same way.”
The moment Song Mingjiao said this, even someone as old as Director Qiu wasn’t so dull as to miss the implication. He began to realize that Song Mingjiao’s words were pointed.
Song Mingjiao then let out a sigh. “I’m very grateful that Uncle Qiu is always thinking of me. But in truth, Mr. Mo and I haven’t seen each other in a long time. He is a rising star in the industry now, a very busy man. How could he possibly still remember me?”
He turned toward Mo Qinan and blinked at him, even appearing somewhat friendly. “Right? Mo Qinan?”
Mo Qinan’s face turned ashen.
Director Qiu understood the meaning. The previously genial expression he held toward Mo Qinan instantly cooled. “Is that so?”
Having been in the industry for years, Director Qiu naturally knew about the current impetuous atmosphere. He had thought this was a heartwarming story of friendship, but it turned out to be an ungrateful “white-eyed wolf.”
“You should contact my assistant. He will send you the audition segments. If you can pass those, we’ll talk further.”
Director Qiu maintained his civility, as he was the one who had invited the man, but whether he would actually open the back door now depended entirely on his mood.
Mo Qinan suppressed the embarrassment in his heart, attempting one last grab for the opportunity: “Director Qiu, I brought some clips of my performances over the years. Would you like to take a look? I have admired you for a long time and have always hoped for a chance to work with you.”
Director Qiu swept his hand across the tea tray, intentionally brushing Mo Qinan’s hand aside in the process.
Watching Director Qiu’s deliberate actions, Song Mingjiao suppressed a laugh. The old man likely thought he had been bullied and was venting on his behalf.
He then acted as if he had suddenly remembered something and said, “Oh, Uncle Qiu, I actually have something to say about this. Mo Qinan’s acting is quite impressive. I often heard his previous directors praising him, saying things like he can film dozens of takes for a single scene, and he even gets personal demonstrations from the directors themselves. He’s very dedicated.”
This “praise” was more cutting than any insult.
It was essentially saying that Mo Qinan ruined so many takes that the directors got so frustrated they had to show him how to act themselves.
Mo Qinan reached his limit: “Song Mingjiao, don’t take things too far!”
Director Qiu slammed his teacup heavily onto the table. “Mingjiao is an honored guest. He is the current Chairman of Chenxing Group. Even my films rely on investments from his subsidiary companies. Mo Qinan, watch your words.”
Mo Qinan found it utterly absurd. “Him? Chenxing Group?”
That small, broken-down entertainment company with hardly any employees? The Song Mingjiao who seemed to do nothing all day was the manager of such a giant entity?
Mo Qinan turned his head. Song Mingjiao was cupping his face with both hands, accepting the title without a shred of guilt. He blinked at Mo Qinan, as if saying: Oh, you didn’t know?
Mo Qinan felt a wave of dizziness. Why was such an important identity kept from him during the years they lived together?
Just then, Director Qiu’s phone rang. It seemed there was an urgent matter he needed to handle.
Song Mingjiao said considerately, “It’s fine, Uncle Qiu. You should go ahead.”
Director Qiu nodded, then frowned at Mo Qinan. He wanted to have Mo Qinan removed as well, but he hadn’t expected the man to be so stubborn, staring fixedly at Song Mingjiao. “You’ve been lying to me! Give me an explanation!”
Several large security guards entered to escort Mo Qinan out, but Mo Qinan was shouting like he had lost his mind. Director Qiu had likely never seen someone so shameless; at the thought that he had invited such a person to today’s tea, his entire face darkened.
“It’s alright, Uncle Qiu. Let me catch up with him. After all, it has been a long time since we last met.”
Song Mingjiao stood up. The moon-white wide sleeves fell at his sides, and as the sunlight filtered through the window, the fabric seemed to shimmer with a flowing radiance.
Director Qiu was indeed in a hurry; he nodded and left. The security guards released Mo Qinan, but as he moved to lung toward Song Mingjiao, he was forcibly pinned to the ground, forced to kneel before him.
Furthermore, it was a familiar face the bodyguard who followed Song Mingjiao like a lingering ghost, Li Yuanhua.
Song Mingjiao walked over to Mo Qinan, circled him once, his ethereal hem brushing past the man. Then, he crouched down to look Mo Qinan in the eye, asking with a smile, “Do I look good today?”
Mo Qinan found it even more ridiculous. Given their current relationship, he was still asking such intimate questions?
Fortunately, Song Mingjiao didn’t need his answer. He continued to himself, “Such a beautiful outfit, but you’ve made it dirty. It’s going to be very hard to clean.”
His voice even sounded a bit aggrieved, as if he were truly upset about the clothes.
But Song Mingjiao’s tone quickly shifted: “Just like you. A stain, a piece of dog-skin plaster—it takes a lot of effort to wash it away.”
“You were the one who deceived me first! If you had said earlier that it was Chenxing Group, how could I… how could I…”
Mo Qinan suddenly couldn’t continue. If Song Mingjiao had revealed a higher status, would he have crawled back to him? Was he truly someone who only cared about status?
Mo Qinan tried to break free, but the bodyguard simply twisted his arms behind his back and dislocated his joints. He instantly broke into a cold sweat from the pain, roaring at the guard, “You’re nothing but a dog at Song Mingjiao’s side!”
The bodyguard pressed his lips together and remained silent.
Crouching there, Song Mingjiao patted Mo Qinan’s face. “Then what did you want me to do? In your imagination, was I supposed to be like this?”
Song Mingjiao cleared his throat, coughed twice, and then instantly transformed his expression.
His eyes filled with a misty vapor, the corners turning red. Tears hung from his long lashes, threatening to fall. He bit his lip and looked over with a gaze full of grievance and sorrow. His stray hairs partially covered his face as he trembled piteously. Even the tip of his nose was flushed as he said in a delicate, heartbreaking voice, “I… I really didn’t mean to hide it from you.”
Mo Qinan was momentarily dazed. Just as he was about to be enticed into speaking, he heard Song Mingjiao let out a laugh. He asked the bodyguard behind him, “How was my acting?”
“Young Master is very beautiful!”
Song Mingjiao was dissatisfied, feeling the praise was inadequate. He directed the bodyguard, “Quickly, bring out the professional. I assume you haven’t forgotten to keep the video call open?”
Only then did Mo Qinan realize that while he was being pinned down like a clown, Song Mingjiao was actually on a video call. He He’s disgusting voice came from the screen.
“Baby, your acting was superb!”
Song Mingjiao begrudgingly accepted the compliment and turned back to business. “Did you like today’s surprise?”
He began to count on his fingers: “What should we do? Look at the mess you’re in now. Your reputation? Riddled with scandals. The variety show? Your chance to clear your name is gone. The movie? Your hope for a famous director’s project has fallen through. Resources? Well, that’s what happens when you offend a capitalist like me. You can’t sing, and your acting only fools fans I’m actually worried for you.”
As if performing a magic trick, Song Mingjiao pulled out his phone and forced Mo Qinan to look at the screen. “Look, they’ve started calling you a ‘tainted artist.’ Though, I think they’re being unfair to you. Right now, it’s just a matter of private morality. There’s a threshold for being a ‘tainted artist.’ Keep it up; I’ll help you reach it. No need to thank me!”
Mo Qinan felt a sudden surge of panic. “What do you want to do!”
Song Mingjiao smiled. “I want you to know that being a dog by my side should have been considered an honor.”
He stood up and commanded, “Li Yuanhua, kiss me.”
