The Security Guard Who Won the Heart of the Unattainable Actress - Chapter 36.1
Chapter 36.1
“Such a good thing only exists in science fiction movies.” Li Guang said warily to Ran Mingyue, “Sister Mingyue, are you alright? Did you download an anti-fraud app? I think…”
“That’s enough,” Ran Mingyue interrupted her, her tone utterly helpless. “You’d better pretend I never said it.”
Wen Yingzhi laughed and winked at Li Guang, “What a great opportunity you just lost!”
Li Guang’s expression: Cat scratching head.jpg
After observing Li Guang and Ran Mingyue for so long, Wen Yingzhi was starting to understand. It turned out she had been narrow-minded before. She had thought… it was all Jiang Qiaoye’s fault for distorting the truth, saying that Ran Mingyue’s expression was always “off” when looking at Li Guang.
So, she hadn’t realized that the “off” feeling wasn’t the kind everyone else had imagined.
“What are you talking about?” Hua Yuzhi was still confused. Wen Yingzhi said, “Talking about what? You haven’t figured it out.”
Hua Yuzhi shook her head: “Huh? I chatted with Li Guang yesterday. How did it evolve into Little Sister Li Guang wearing Teacher Ran Mingyue’s sweater?”
Wen Yingzhi said, “The reason you wore my sweater yesterday is the reason Li Guang wore Mingyue’s sweater.”
“That’s different!” At the mention of this, Hua Yuzhi’s expression started to change. She made a gesture to hit Wen Yingzhi. “Li Guang also told me yesterday that she doesn’t have anyone she likes.”
Wen Yingzhi: “Well, that’s troubling… Don’t worry about other people’s business. We haven’t even sorted out our own.”
“There’s nothing to sort out between you and me,” Hua Yuzhi mumbled, refusing to fall for Wen Yingzhi’s trap.
The guests up front were looking at the protective gear and wirework harnesses. Those who hadn’t done wirework were curious. Xiang Que volunteered to explain the equipment and discussed work matters with the staff.
Li Guang listened intently.
They walked at the back. After Wen Yingzhi reminded her how to distinguish between the main and secondary cameras, Li Guang was visibly more relaxed.
Ran Mingyue didn’t look at anyone else; she only looked at Li Guang.
She pondered for a moment and then smiled, “…You really won’t consider my suggestion?”
Wen Yingzhi chimed in from the side, “A one-step solution is so good. Can’t I experience it?”
Li Guang said, “You’re not kidding, are you?”
Ran Mingyue shook her head. Wen Yingzhi looked exasperated: “Bear Ears, you’re missing the point.”
“Your suggestion is good, but there’s no such straightforward love-struck fool in the world,” Li Guang said. “After I finish the show, Captain Liu said I’m a talent worth cultivating and could be a security team captain in the future.”
“Pfft.” Wen Yingzhi couldn’t help but laugh. “That’s your ambition? Since there’s an easier way, you’re still only thinking about becoming a security team captain? If you find a person like that and marry her, you’ll have everything you want.”
“Marry?!” Li Guang’s eyes widened. She seemed shocked by Wen Yingzhi’s suggestion. She had never considered those two words. Li Guang re-chewed on Ran Mingyue’s words and realized belatedly.
Marry—
She couldn’t be talking about marrying Ran Mingyue, could she?
That was something she had never even dared to dream about.
How could things happen so fast? Li Guang only knew that relationships built too quickly were fragile and prone to sudden collapse.
She had only wanted to be a proper security guard by Ran Mingyue’s side at first. Being able to progress to heart-to-heart talks with Ran Mingyue now already felt like something she had begged for.
Li Guang gasped and shook her head vehemently.
“Wen Yingzhi, stop teasing her,” Ran Mingyue naturally knew Li Guang could easily be startled by this. She guided Li Guang to her other side but didn’t correct Wen Yingzhi, saying instead, “Think about it yourself.”
Wen Yingzhi then whispered on the side, “Give Mingyue a foot massage, a shoulder massage. She’s usually busy. She’s the kind of wife who’s wealthy, has free time, and doesn’t come home often. God, that’s the wife of my dreams.”
“I’m not the kind of person who would sell myself for money,” Li Guang squeezed out the words, her face flushed. Ran Mingyue said, “Good.”
Wen Yingzhi: “Good what? Since Bear Ears is unwilling, choose me. I’m available.”
Ran Mingyue: “Get lost.”
“Bear Ears, Little Sister Bear Ears…” Hua Yuzhi was also pulled into the conversation by Wen Yingzhi. Li Guang looked baffled.
Did she change her name again?
Ran Mingyue quickly turned on Wen Yingzhi’s microphone, pushed her forward, and signaled “Shh.”
You two talk too much. Go play up ahead.
“This looks easy, but the height…”
“Brother Que, are you sure this thing is safe when strapped to us? As long as it’s safe, I’m fine! I trust you’ll hit the apple.”
“Sister Hua! A-Yu! Hurry up! You’re dawdling so much at the back. You’ll miss the safety precautions.”
The group up front started chatting excitedly, and the cameras followed them. Ran Mingyue saw the camera move, so she quickly followed the main group.
Li Guang quietly walked beside them, willingly acting as the guests’ shadow. However, her plump, rounded outfit and the two little ears made her a focal point for the staff everywhere she went.
The guests who had been chatting animatedly fell silent simultaneously as they stood on the second-floor platform.
The entire platform was three stories high. This position was about seven meters above the ground, and the sponge mat below, when viewed from the height, looked as thin as a piece of paper.
This was different from the massive inflatable safety mat the production team had specially brought yesterday.
The feeling of looking down from above was more intense, sparking an uncontrollable panic in people’s hearts. The indoor wirework was controlled by a machine, but everyone going up had to wear strict protective gear.
Jiang Qiaoye swallowed: “This is more of a drop tower than an actual drop tower…”
He was seriously starting to feel scared.
No one was joking anymore. The production team announced: “First group, Jiang Qiaoye and Xiang Que. Second group, Hua Yuzhi and Song Suoqi. Third group, Wen Yingzhi. Ran Mingyue is the last group. Everyone, please put on your protective gear and have the staff check it.”
The cameraman, understanding the mood, aimed the lens down. The viewers in the live stream immediately felt dizzy.
“Thanks, I’m never jumping off a building in my life”
“Dizzy. If it were me, I’d pass out just standing on the third floor looking down. I have a severe fear of heights”
“The platform is only ten meters high. How high can ten meters be?”
“To the previous commenter, ten meters is equivalent to the sixth floor of an old building. Do you understand the concept? Also, looking down from a high-rise through glass is completely, completely different from looking down directly without any barrier… I’m not joking”
“If we feel this way through the camera, no wonder Brother Ye isn’t saying a word”
“It’s so high! What about my Wife Mingyue? Sob sob sob. How can she jump?”
“Estimate: those who jumped yesterday can jump today, and those who didn’t jump yesterday won’t jump today either”
“Won’t jump? Then how did Ran Mingyue film her wirework scenes before? A body double? Didn’t she say she did everything herself when she won the award?”
“You believe promotional drafts?”
Li Guang didn’t have time to worry about the comments this time. She was by Ran Mingyue’s side, watching carefully as the amusement park instructor explained the protective gear to Ran Mingyue.
She also glanced down, but Li Guang didn’t have a fear of heights, so she felt nothing about it.
“You should go down and get ready,” Ran Mingyue said. “I’ll be fine here on the platform.”
Li Guang was supposed to be the apple-topped prop person later, but she was here to accompany Ran Mingyue.
Standing on the platform, Ran Mingyue showed no sign of fear. Li Guang couldn’t tell if this was an act or if she was genuinely not afraid.
“Are you really okay?” Li Guang worried. “It is quite high.”
Even the loud-mouthed Jiang Qiaoye was silent as a chicken now. The only words he managed were to ask the instructor and Xiang Que if everything would be okay. It really will, right?
Ran Mingyue leaned close to Li Guang’s ear: “Haven’t you noticed? Yesterday was jumping down without any protective measures, but wirework is different.”
Wirework has protection and a steel cable pulling you, which is like a ‘safety net.’ Although wirework is really hard and exhausting, Ran Mingyue wasn’t as afraid of it.
Li Guang said, “I’ll cheer you on when it’s time. I believe in you.”
“Now you believe in me.” Ran Mingyue’s breath lightly brushed Li Guang’s earlobe, causing a slight tickle. “Wait for me downstairs.”
Li Guang quickly ran down and looked up.
For Jiang Qiaoye’s group, Xiang Que went first to set an example, as he was experienced. No one suggested Ran Mingyue go first, as she hadn’t jumped yesterday.
The simulated drop tower would pull the body up and down rapidly three times, followed by a lateral flip, and then ten spins.
After Xiang Que stood up, Wang Rou asked through a loudspeaker, “Are you nervous?”
“Very nervous,” Xiang Que said with a wry smile. “I’ve never done such consecutive high-altitude moves while filming.”
He was afraid he wouldn’t be able to hold the sword later.
Song Suoqi said, “Brother Que, didn’t you have a lot of wirework scenes in Empress, which you did with Teacher Ran? The visual effects were great.”
Xiang Que said, “That’s different.”
There were indeed many wirework scenes. When they joined the cast, the script required the lead actors not to use doubles, and both he and Ran Mingyue had signed off on it.
But Xiang Que couldn’t handle the high-altitude wirework after one or two weeks. He ended up using a double for the later parts.
Ran Mingyue, however, did all of it herself. This was where Xiang Que both admired and feared Ran Mingyue.
“Prepare to start.”
Xiang Que mentally counted down three, two, one. The sudden pull instantly yanked his entire body upward. Even though he was mentally prepared, Xiang Que’s breath was instantly knocked out of him.
A man who was six feet one inch tall was tossed up like a feather by the force of the wire rope, seemingly weightless as he was pulled to the very top. With less than half a second to react, he dropped rapidly.
A strong feeling of weightlessness washed over him. Xiang Que gritted his teeth, his grip on the sword almost slipping. He hadn’t done wirework in his last two films, so Xiang Que was a little rusty.
After enduring three rounds, Xiang Que felt like he was about to pass out.
Jiang Qiaoye exclaimed, “Brother Que! You’re amazing! Keep going, Brother Que!”
Staff member: “Jiang Qiaoye, go down and get ready.”
Fortunately, the lateral flip wasn’t as difficult for experienced actors. Xiang Que’s stomach felt a bit better, and he even struck a pose with the sword.
The last part now. Just bear with it, and it will be over.
When he started spinning, his vision went black. The force was much stronger than the ‘elephant trunk’ challenge from before!
Jiang Qiaoye downstairs was completely oblivious, thinking he would be carried to victory by Xiang Que. He happily held the apple and chatted with Li Guang: “Look at my Brother Que, how awesome he is! When he spins, he looks like the drum of the Little Swan automatic washing machine.”
“Aren’t you the spokesperson for that brand?” Li Guang didn’t have time to look at Jiang Qiaoye. She was observing Xiang Que’s condition and called out to Xiang Que’s security guard, Niu Donggua, “Brother Gua, hurry up. Be ready to catch him. Teacher Xiang Que isn’t doing so well.”
“Nonsense? My Brother Que is a wirework veteran.” Jiang Qiaoye didn’t believe it. Li Guang took out a toolkit and distributed garbage bags to all her colleagues. “Pay attention, everyone. Do you have the mint candies and motion sickness pills ready?”
“Ready, Little Captain!” Her colleagues were very cooperative. Even though they were all older than Li Guang, they listened to her.
Li Guang was the only one who thought of mint candies. A bunch of grown men, including Captain Liu Limin, hadn’t thought of it.
Wang Rou was surprised: “Bear Ears, you’re so thoughtful?”
Li Guang said bashfully, “Just a casual thing.”
The garbage bags were provided by the production team, but the mint candies and pills were prepared by Li Guang. Jiang Qiaoye watched for a moment, found it interesting, and tried to talk to Li Guang again.
Li Guang didn’t have time. She put a mint candy into the screaming chicken’s mouth. “Go play with the chicken, Teacher Jiang. I have to work.”
In fact, she was very busy, managing the condition of all the guests and controlling the on-site security.
Before Jiang Qiaoye could speak, Xiang Que’s task was complete. The others on the platform started applauding. Jiang Qiaoye quickly stood straight, the apple on his head.
When Xiang Que came down, his steps were weak. His legs felt battered and lifeless. He strained to lift the long sword, aiming at Jiang Qiaoye’s direction.
“That’s my face! Brother Que? Brother Que, don’t scare me?” Jiang Qiaoye cried out in horror. “Brother Que?!”
Xiang Que looked ashen. After taking a few steps toward Jiang Qiaoye, he dropped the sword with a “clank.” Jiang Qiaoye was so nervous he squeezed the screaming chicken. “Squeak!” A mint candy rolled out of the chicken’s mouth and landed right at Xiang Que’s feet.
Niu Donggua was about to rush over to help, but Li Guang stopped him, signaling him to wait a moment.
Xiang Que narrowed his eyes, confirming it was a candy at his feet. He peeled the wrapper and put it in his mouth. The strong, cool mint flavor shot straight to his head, giving him a moment of clarity.
The Xiang Que on camera actually stood up after sucking on the candy!
He clenched his jaw, used his willpower to raise the long sword, aimed at the target, and thrust.
Jiang Qiaoye held his breath.
The apple tumbled down. Xiang Que didn’t touch Jiang Qiaoye, but he also didn’t stab the apple. His sword hit the apple’s rounded edge.
“Task failed.”
“Brother Gua, hurry up!” Li Guang quickly pushed Niu Donggua forward. Niu Donggua had already opened the pink garbage bag on his way. “Teacher Xiang, if you feel sick, just let it out.”
“…Thank you,” Xiang Que buried his face in the Hello Kitty garbage bag, but he didn’t throw up. After drinking some water, the coolness of the mint dissipated the dizziness. “Who prepared this candy?”
“I did,” Li Guang looked up. When Xiang Que arrived at the rest area, she asked, “Teacher Xiang, your core… er, have you been too busy lately?”
Li Guang actually wanted to ask Xiang Que if he hadn’t been working out recently. She had observed that his waist and abdomen looked soft and unsupported.
But she suddenly remembered that Xiang Que was always described by fans on social media as disciplined and dedicated to fitness.
Maintaining the persona each guest was supposed to have was also the job of the accompanying security guards.
“Yes, I haven’t had time to work out recently. Too much going on,” Xiang Que wiped his sweat. “Thank you so much. I feel much better after eating this candy. Otherwise, I would have collapsed when I got down.”
